a few days ago, i was told i look like a monkey. I have nothing against monkeys, so i know the guy was just trying to bait me into a reaction. this guy was using a slur for Japanese people, many of whom I have great respect for and I don't like hearing slurs. so i asked him to cool it which he took as an opportunity to escalate the situation into violence. he continued to say something about people needing to go back to "their own country." when I asked him what if he was talking to me, he asked me, "what are you going to do about it?" and came towards me. thankfully, a library staff member intervened, telling him to leave. i didn't insult or threaten him, though i did stand up to protect myself. in the old days... well, instead of internalizing his insult, i have decided to see the hidden reason he would try to get into my head like that. i know it's more about him than me. it's how this world wants us to do to one another. to make us "the other" or a thing, but I know i'm growing, so i will not let it affect me. Dead & Company to Play at MusiCares 2025 Persons of the Year Celebration of Grateful Dead

- Bruce Hornsby, Sierra Ferrell, Mick Fleetwood, Norah Jones, Billy Strings and others also on tap

Dead & Company will play in honor of the Grateful Dead at MusiCares’ Persons of the Year gala.

It will mark the band’s first performance since its 2024 residency at Las Vegas’ Sphere, where the group will play again later this year.

“Through six decades, Grateful Dead have built a legacy of philanthropy, community and activism,” MusiCares said in a statement announcing the lineup for the Jan. 31 fundraiser.

“We come together to honor the musical and charitable impact of the band … so that we can continue our mission of helping the music community in times of need, including our critical disaster relief efforts for music professionals affected by the greater Los Angeles wildfires.”

Stewart Copeland, Sierra Ferrell, Mick Fleetwood, Norah Jones, Wynonna, Dave Matthews Band, My Morning Jacket, Lukas Nelson, Maggie Rose, Billy Strings, Dwight Yoakam and former Grateful Dead keyboardist Bruce Hornsby are among the other artists slated to perform.

“I’m honored to lend my support and join an amazing lineup of artists onstage as we honor the Grateful Dead’s legacy and fundraise for an important cause,” Hornsby said.

There are many versions of Gold Dust Woman, some better than others. For me, the ultimate (no offense intended to Stevie Nicks, who is, of course, the OG) is the one recorded by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson in 1978.

private rites, julia armfield - I REALLY ADORED THIS ONE. 5-stars will be returning to it. absolutely phenomenal vaguely apocalyptic horror story set in a drowning world and following three estranged sisters in the wake of their cruel father’s death.

file under: 13 suspicious incidents, lemony snicket - really really charming! i’ve been wanting to reread atwq and realized i never read this addendum to the series when i was a kid :-)

annihilation, jeff vandermeer - shockingly i tried reading this one, like, three times before this month (the last time was two years ago(?)) and i could never properly get into it. this time around i tore through it and absolutely loved it…! sci-fi story about a biologist and her team as they explore the mysterious area x on the behalf of a secretive government agency.

song of solomon, toni morrison - i’d been putting off reading this one for a while, not out of disinterest but because it is such a weighty book and i wanted to wait for a good time. i read it over the course of a week. it’s wonderfully written, compulsively readable, profound and inquisitive and odyssic. absolutely loved it. unravels the family history of the dead family, honing in the youngest sun, milkman dead.

waiting for the barbarians, j.m. coetzee - had to read this one for class and i’m a bit conflicted about it. ultimately i think it works as a very concise and clear analogy, but i found it a bit ‘white guilt’ about the whole affair.

open water, caleb azumah nelson - unfortunately did not enjoy this one very much :-( heard a lot of good things about it and it just wasn’t for me in the end. a love story between two young black british artists.

martyr!, kaveh akbar - was looking forward to this one and really enjoyed it! i feel like it could have gone deeper but for what it was, i liked it. it was very poetic and i loved how it was structured. follows a suicidal iranian-american poet as he strives to write about martyrdom and plumbs his own family history in an effort to understand it.
