The Cowboy…?

“How cliche,” has been circling in my head all night. I see myself as an old vaquero in a cantina, a once-legend sung about in a Marty Robbins song, mourning the loss of his Faleena. Perhaps I am a weather-worn cowboy considering his own mortality. Here is my hat, and here is my gun, and in the morning, I will untie my horse and ride into another town as a mysterious red-headed stranger. In reality, through the sepia filter of romanticization and displacement, I am a young woman. Alone, once again on a Saturday night, in my apartment. I am far from the Mexican border, and I have never been to a bar in a border town. I’ve barely been to a bar in my college town. I am, however, thinking about the love that I lost. That alone connects me, across space and time and the line between fiction and reality, to those old cowboys.

In reality, Marty Robbins was not a doomed cowboy in El Paso. Johnny Cash never went to prison. Merle Haggard was from Bakersfield, not Muskogee. But, they felt very real and honest feelings. Feelings akin to what I feel tonight as I drink alone in my apartment and dream of what once was. If nothing else, I see myself this way because I know they have felt this pain before, too. The picture of the beat-down cowboy brings me comfort because I know that my pain was once his pain and that this loneliness and grief is not a novel experience. I would even argue that it is one of the more familiar feelings in the entirety of human existence. As long as there has been love, there has been loss to accompany it. But, the existence of loss also proves the existence of deep and all-encompassing love.

I know things wouldn’t have worked. I know things were doomed from the start. But that doesn’t make the pain less real. That doesn’t give me a chance to repeat the last three years with fresh eyes and a plan to prevent everything that went wrong. I sit here instead and reflect on what has come to pass in three-quarter time. I think about the life that I will no longer live and the visions I had for myself that have burnt completely to the ground, ashes even blown away with the wind. Considering this, I realize that the old cowboys have a leg or two up on me for certain. Instead of scraping through the dirt and ash and rubble of lost dreams, they could ride on into the next town and leave the debris for someone else. They were also fictional. Those are two luxuries of the legend of the cowboy that I do not enjoy but envy with all of my might.
