Things start to get complicated when your supervisor asks to speak to you privately.  Of course, he doesn’t provide any context, but by the late morning, you’re twitching in discomfort and anticipation.  You look up at Simon to see him—what else?—looking at you already.  He has an eyebrow raised in question, and when you shake your head slightly, he goes back to his…whatever he does.  Paperwork.  Whatever.

A million, billion years would not have been enough for you to guess what your boss wants to talk to you about—Simon. 

Thank you for making him feel welcome, he says.  Lt Riley’s not really an office kind of guy.  

You try your best to keep a straight face when you ask him why Simon’s really being punished and get both a chuckle and a get back to work. 

And the surprise conversation makes you think about the other things you've been avoiding thinking about. For one, you’ve always found yourself daydreaming about Ghost during the work day…but things are different now.

He’s always in the back of your mind, you’re always having to jolt yourself out of your daydreams, but you’ve slowly come to realise just how completely out of your league Ghost really is—he has a reputation on base as a loner and a weirdo, and if that wasn’t enough, you’d even heard through the grapevine that he was 141.  You, on the other hand, were a pervy data analyst punching above your weight, with a pipe dream of…well.  Ghost’s pipe.  

But recently, Simon’s been on your mind too.  Not quite a summit you could climb yet, but at least one your brain (and other parts of you) could imagine scaling someday. 

And most annoyingly, it’s not just his physical appearance you find yourself attracted to—lately, it’s his prickly demeanour that you’ve been finding particularly endearing.  It’s strange but you feel a bit weird about no one even attempting to talk to him at work.   

And it’s irrational for you to feel that way, you know that.  He keeps to himself and never voluntarily tries to start a conversation with anyone. Unfortunately, Simon is…horrendously Simon about the whole thing.  Says constantly that he doesn’t care and that he can’t stand conversation and that he doesn’t need more than one pain in his arse.  But he’s never once pushed you away when you tried, so you don’t understand why the others won’t.  It irks you that they don’t include him, while also making you feel warmer inside for having been the chosen one that gets to spend time with him.  

What has become worrisome to you is that he’s…scarily in tune with your interest in him.  

And you find that you don’t mind.

He looks at you—god, you’re convinced that he looks into you—with those dark, wet, almost black eyes that have you convinced that you wear all your secrets on your face for the world to see.

So you know for a fact that your jaw is going to need reeling back in when, on one of your smoke breaks and during your Ghost-related speculation rants, Simon exasperatedly agrees to introduce you.

Lucifer and Satan would try to get to the bottom of it. The main difference with them though is reactions.

Lucifer is confused, but also re-evaluating if he's actually that harsh. He's never punished you the way he did his brother's but it's making him think about that, especially with how hard he is on Mammon (with good reason). The first time there's an awkward silence and he's just staring you down before deciding to just be extremely gentle and careful with you from now on.

Satan on the other hand is re-evaluating his wrath. He hasn't gotten furious with you since that time him and lucifer switched bodies. And he's made it a point to walk away or shut down any conversation that would fuel his wrath before he says or does something he'd regret. He definitely instantly thinks it's just a common fear reflex in humans but solomon has never done it, and observing other humans it varies. His take away? You have a fragile fear response and it is his job to make sure he doesn't trigger it.

Mammon and Beelzebub are soothing you, trying to understand it, and maybe cutting off high fives or sudden movements all together.

Beel is instantly concerned and is apologizing profusely. He is a pretty big guy and a gentle giant but what if he actually hurt you! He'd never want that so from now own it's low fives, slowly and carefully opening his arms for a hug, slowly raising his hand to gently pat your head. Every move is careful and steady, despite your instance on you being fine.

Mammon may be stupid, but he's not dumb. No more high fives or hair ruffles. Instead he makes it a point to just verbally compliment you or express his excitement and gratitude. Only when you initiate a high five or want head pats then he'll oblige.

Leviathan gets it. let me have this, hear me out! i, for one, think he gets it because he's also a bit jumpy. look at this wet rag of an otaku loner and tell me he doesn't receive occasional jump scares when it comes to praise, positive or playfull interactions.

Levi, doesn't question you on it. He just registers it and moves on by giving you verbal praise instead. Sure he's a blushing mess and maybe it's muttered but he does it. From now on either you initiate or her verbally says what he's about to do.

Asmodeus and Belphegor would want to fight whoever is responsible for causing their sheep to respond this way. But after understanding that it literally just happens they, like some of the others, cut out any quick physical forms of positive interactions. However, they replace it with hugs or simply holding you.

Asmo will clock it instantly and immediately start holding you, patting your hair, telling you it's okay. Oh it's not a trauma response? But you... ohhh maybe he just startled you. Still he's very sorry and opting to never surprise you like that again.

Belphie looks at you confused and tries it again, but taking a 'cat about to hit something stance' before being concerned. Honestly he was just testing it. If it's not trauma and you didn't flinch the second time then what is it? Eh, either way he now just drapes his arms around your shoulders from behind and uses your head as a pillow. (or if you're taller your shoulder and his arm)

Alternative portraits and stupid design details under the cut!!!!

Edling wear their wedding rings as necklaces to avoid damaging them in battle. Given 90% of their job always leads to one. Technically, Ed started the habit, but Ling is a goddamn dork and wanted to match his husband.

Everyone in the family sports some kind of braid and belt. Ed wears a white smaller one over his purple as a nod to Ling's style bleeding into him, and—vice versa—Ling wears a black belt as a nod to Ed's.

The belt is also Ed's way of wearing his husband's culture somehow. (The leather is not going just because he's married now. It's practical!)

Ling's sun pattern on his shirt matches Ed's belt medallion. (Re: dork.)

Ed's spear (and medallion!) is a gift from Izumi! After he was separated from Al years ago, Izumi took Ed in and taught him all her arcane and martial ways. The spear itself is actually a detachable dagger, that Ed elongated into a spear because that's just more his style.

Like Drew's sword, when it's powered by the sun, Ed's spear can shoot fire. (That's what the pattern is, Ling. It's not a fucking lotus, for the last time!)

Ling's sword isn't powered, but the elaborate scabbard was a late gift from Fu.

(Ed's glove is also a gift from Greed from when they were dating.)

The family has been to enough colder chimera habitats that Ed's permanently switched to Northern automail.

Nina wears a mix of elements from both her parents. A Xingese shirt like Ling, and hardy tights and boots like Ed. The knee guards were a mutual insistence from edling.

The buttons on her shirt are poppies! Exactly like Ling's favorite nickname for her, yīngsù (poppy).

Her right-hand bracelets are color-inspired by her parents too. Her left hand's one is just a cute handmade one spelling her name.

She's strangely short for an eleven-year-old. Edling have gotten one too many comments confusing her for eight. Unknowingly being the philosopher's stone and unlocking said powers young does that to a child's growth.

She has a weapon to focus her powers. Unpictured cuz I failed to figure out what it would be lmao.

Lumi's breed is an evolution of the Nambian flying snake! Her species can't quite fly anymore, but they can still glide their massive weights with their head fins.

She learned all her facial expressions from Nina. Hence the happy flare of her head fins, and her big, adorable "beam".

She's also blind! She was blinded fighting a bigger predator in the wild when she was very young, and couldn't possibly survive on her own after that. Edling rescued her not too long after they'd adopted Nina, intending her to just be a pet... Now just as much "their girl" as Nina.

They did not anticipate her to grow so large.

Ed was the one who named her Lumi. Luminous like the moon; or Lulu, as Ling and Nina insist on using instead.

(Ed's grumbling is full of shit. Even he slips up sometimes.)

Her scales reflect light in pearlescent rainbows meant to mesmerize prey! Optimized in the wild, she can camouflage to practically anything.
