Luke Castellan & Anakin Skywalker Parallels

So I just borrowed 3 Star Wars movies from the library! I am finally going to watch the movies. Yay!

I wanted to write this post because as I started to delve into Luke's character there were so many similarities to Anakin.

Groomed/manipulated by the boss villain

From he was a child, Anakin was groomed by Palpatine. Luke was manipulated by Kronos after his failed quest. Both boys were in a period of instability/turmoil when the big bad had them in his sights. Anakin was separated from his mother and joined the Jedi order that did not readily accept him. Luke had some form of trauma after his quest and was in a low point of his life.

Path to darkness influenced by the (potential) loss of their love interest

Anakin lost his mother Shmi and he was desperate not to lose Padme. He damned himself because he wanted to save his wife. Part of Luke's motivation for his actions was avenging Thalia. He was angry at the gods for taking his family from him.

Saved by the hope and love of family (child figure) when everyone else gave up on them

Even after Anakin turned to the dark side and choked her, Padme believed there was good inside him. Despite Percy's scorn and others seeing Luke as a traitor and a lost cause, Annabeth still had hope that Luke could be saved. Thalia washed her hands of him. Hermes wouldn't/couldn't act. Padme''s hope lived on in Luke and Vader killed Palpatine to save his son. Annabeth reminded Luke of his promise of family and it's really because of Annabeth, not Percy, that Olympus was saved.

Good people corrupted by their life circumstances and arrogance

Despite their hard upbringings, Anakin and Luke were kind boys. Anakin extended hospitality to Qui-Gon Jinn and the others despite being a disadvantaged slave. Even though Hal Green was complicit in his near death, Luke still had empathy for the old man. He immediately took Annabeth under his wing and was devoted to Thalia. However, Anakin was manipulated by Palpatine and was mentally vulnerable due to lack of sleep from his nightmares of Padme + the stress of a long war. Not to mention his issues with the order and his lingering trauma of being a slave. Anakin went off the deep end. Luke was bitter towards the gods because he felt abandoned by Hermes. He never had a stable parental figure and his life at camp wasn't any easier. He lost Thalia and was forced to live in an overcrowded cabin and later take on a leadership role. The failed quest was the straw that broke the camel's back. If Luke and Anakin had better circumstances and support, they likely would have stayed the good people they were.

Compromised bodily autonomy

The circumstances are a bit different since Anakin had zero consent for what Palpatine did to him. However, both lost bodily autonomy because of the big bad. Palpatine revived Vader in a torture machine suit and Vader was in unimaginable pain for the rest of his life. Kronos possessed Luke's body and forced him to bathe in the Styx.

(Almost) murdered by loved ones who gave up on them

Kenobi left Anakin to a cruel fate by dismembering him and walking away as his brother burned alive. Thalia kicked Luke off a cliff which led to his apparent death. Both Thalia and Kenobi also tried to convince the main protag that there was nothing left to save and they needed to be put down.

Death fulfulling a prophecy

Nothing much to say here. Anakin's death was supposed to end the reign of the Sith or something along those lines. Luke's death saved Olympus. Both men were the ones responsible for the defeat of the big bad as the main protag was ultimately powerless to do so.

Harmed their family

Anakin choked Padme, tortured Leia (didn't know she was his daughter), and cut off Luke's hand. Luke put Annabeth's life in danger in book 2 and 3 (although he did have a plan to use Artemis to save her but still he put her life at risk).

I want Han and Leia in the "10yo Luke timetravels to TCW" AU, so...

Leia is a homeless kid on Coruscant that tries to pickpocket Bail. His immediate reaction is "hey, you want me to get you some McDonald's?"

This leads to Leia getting adopted by the Organas.

She has all her original fire but with the added bonus of street smarts and fighting dirty

She's also immediately adopted by the Corrie Guard, or maybe she adopted them. Hard to tell.

Leia once almost attacked Palpatine but was stopped by Bail. Why did she want to kill him? "HE WAS MEAN TO FOX!!!"

Yeah I know nothing canon about Fox or the Corrie Guard but I'll wing it don't get mad. Tumblr is my main source of info.

She is very protective of her commander. Will not tolerate mean civilians. Made him a fox plushie.

Because Sith can have more than one apprentice, (headcanon) so Han, meet your new sister Asajj. 

Yeah Han's a Sith. We got a Jedi, (Luke) a Sith, (Han) and a relatively normal person. (Leia)

He's a nervous boi. Poor guy was traumatized on Corellia and has PTSD at the age of 10. Very jumpy and Ventress does not help with her witch bitch shit.

Eventually comes across Luke in combat and Luke is immediately like "I can tell you don't want to fight and neither do I, wanna swap sides?"

Han isn't really sure so he and his new friend (+ Obi-Wan & Cody) talk it over.

Cody is on edge the entire time but Obi-Wan's dad instincts kick in and he's awesome. Not everyone deserves a redemption but this kiddo certainly does.

It's the gentleness of his act and the compassion in his eyes. Isn't that the spirit of who Luke Skywalker is?

Let him act or let Disney train him if they're not confident enough. IDC. He's a good fit. I said what I said. 🤷‍♀️

But I don't really expect if he'll get the role(esp with Disney), I'm just living in the moment and here to appreciate that face of his!!

Look at the glint of his eyes here. He's so passionate about it. He must have had a blast playing Luke and he did it respectfully. 👏👏

I love how The Last Jedi will always have sooo many stories that can spawn from it while TFA & TROS won't ever have that privilege.

I love how Rey, after seeing the truth about Ben Solo, is so deeply moved by this revelation just like Luke was with Darth Vader. Now that's a deliciously poetic parallel. I've just noticed it as of me typing this, which is fascinating.

I love how both Rey & Ben parallel Anakin & Darth Vader. I love how complex Reylo's relationship is especially in TLJ.

I love how TLJ is unapologetically brutal with Luke's character. Really showing how disillusioned & broken he is. It really hammers home how instrumental Rey was in showing him that it's not too late for him to save the galaxy again.

Yoda's inclusion is also tastefully done with a clear message to Luke, basically chastising him for not properly passing on his teachings to Rey. Yoda reminds him that his failure isn't the end of his own journey but something to pass on in order to grow. We are what they grow beyond is such a good final line for Yoda's character. Beautifully done.

Sometimes, I really want an animated show about the OT characters. Their adventures, serious and silly, as they become friends and family long before Luke and Leia discover that they're siblings. Stories about Leia struggling with going from princess to general. Luke struggling with being a Jedi and a commander. The Rogue Squadron and their adventures. Han and Chewie barely keeping up with the Space Twin shenanigans.

But, then I remember how each of these characters were treated in the Sequel Trilogy, and I realise that it doesn't matter. No amount of stories about them will change the fact that they all die alone away from each other, that they gave up their childhood, their homes, themselves to the safety of the galaxy and that none of it ever mattered. And I can't enjoy canon stories about them because it won't change their ending, and I can't forget that.

11. Luke would be a very sleepy baby. Meanwhile, baby Leia would not necessarily dislike sleeping, but she would love to keep her curious eyes open so she could examine anything and everything around her.

12. Contrary to popular belief (I mean the fandom pretty much already declares this canon), it seemed like Leia was more like Anakin, and Luke beared more resemblance to Padmé. Strictly speaking personality-wise. If we were talking about appearance, then obviously Anakin and Luke are paired up, and Leia is near a spitting image of Padmé. However, Leia’s fiery spirit and rebellious nature speak “Anakin’s daughter here,” while Luke’s forgiving, wise and optimistic temperament echoes Padmé’s nature. Leia’s stubbornness and witty remarks also mirror Anakin, whereas Luke’s tendencies to hold onto hope and be resilient (in the face of defeat and scary odds) are so similar to Padmé’s approach to life.

13. The twins would absolutely adore bedtime stories about the Clone Wars. Their little hearts would warm at stories about Jar Jar. Leia and Luke would cheer in excitement and delight when hearing tales about Ahsoka and the 501st and all their victories. The two would tremble in fear during the stories about the Nightsisters of Dathomir. Luke and Leia would grumble and make sounds of disgust when Anakin would share stories about Padmé while he would flirt and cuddle with her, and vice versa when Padmé shared stories about Anakin while she acted all lovey-dovey with him. Though, secretly, even though the twins would hate to admit it, they would find their parents’ pure affection for one another adorable.

14. Luke and Leia would LOVE to eat mashed meiloorun fruit as babies and toddlers. In fact, they loved the fruit so much, that, during their family trips to Lothal when they were older, Leia and Luke would always attempt to steal some meilooruns, using the force to their advantage. However, Padmé and Anakin knew what to expect after the first stealing attempt, so they brought C-3PO along on their future trips. The stealing episodes never went done well, especially not when C-3PO tagged along on the trips and was on babysitting duty. Luke and Leia would always cop an earful from Threepio. Always.

15. On Anakin and Padmé’s wedding anniversary they would always head to Naboo’s Varykino Villa- without their children, of course. There, like all those years ago (in AOTC), they would have a picnic and frolic around in the meadows. They would also cuddle and chat near the fireplace- though their conversations would be much happier than what it was when they first sat near the fireplace together (in AOTC). The two would always nostalgically enjoy dinner while Anakin floated fruit around. Additionally, Padmé and Anakin would make it a new tradition to go swimming in the nearby lake every anniversary.

Does anyone else ever think about how baby Luke is relatively calm in Obi-Wan’s arms during the birth and coos all content and loving when Padmé strokes his face, but then just starts wailing the second she dies like he knew. Cuz I do.
