So that last post by Alesis Newman, the one that was locked by "BetterTheNew", was dated January 3 2018. Eight months before her previous post.

The police files on Dr Samuel Webber were dated April 3 2009. Eight months before the date in his journal.

Dr Samuel Webber murdered his ex and then was turned into a tree. We don't know what happened to Alesis Newman's ex before she turned herself into some kind of coral creature, but she was taking bereavement leave at the end. Out of death, something is trying to be born. Or reborn...

...Oh yeah, and let's not even go near this other (lonely, eye-encrusted) rabbithole, let alone down it:

Norris read Dr. Webber's case, about a man who murdered his lover rather than lose her and then was trapped alone in a walled garden, in denial about what he had done and eternally haunted by her voice, with only a small piece of himself remaining aware and perpetually terrified but unable to voice its fear. Cool! Yeah. That's definitely... that's definitely not significant or deeply upsetting in any way.

But Chester... Chester read Alesis Newman's case, about a woman who intentionally destroyed herself in the wake of a lover whom she saw as trying to change her into the person he wanted her to be--and replaced herself with something new and inhuman. Something that has her eyes.

And by post 13, using her paralysis computer, Alesis is writing with her eyes. So is that actually her writing? If it's not, when in that sequence of posts did it stop being her? What does "no longer her" actually mean in this context? Certainly, she's becoming something that the Alesis of eight months earlier, the Alesis of the immediately-deleted fourteenth post, would no longer identify with--if some part of her still existed.

Cool. Yeah. That's definitely not significant... or deeply upsetting... in any way.

So, sometimes some of these cases have some interesting correspondences with TMA statements, so there might be something there. Alesis started that thread, opening up to everyone about her journey to creating a better her, on June 20, 2018. I wonder if there were any TMA statements dated June of 2018?

January through September of 2018 in the world of Protocol, something was trying to be born into a physical form, replacing Alesis Newman.

Alright I promised I'd do a proper theory post so here it is

~ On The Lifespan And Development Of Long-Life Species ~

☆ Xianzhou native humans:

Can live for thousands of years and do not die of old age, rather eventually succumb to mara.

My theory is that their physical development is not directly proportional to a regular human's but slows exponentially: as young children they grow at a typical human rate, then progressively more slowly over time.

Yanqing in the new event estimates himself to be the same age as Luka, who appears as a late teen or young adult, so from this we can gather that by around 18-20 a Xianzhou long-life human has equivalent physical maturity to a young teen. We also know thanks to Huaiyan that they do (or at least, can) continue to age past physical maturity. While we don't really know for sure what's going on with Huaiyan specifically we have been told that he is the oldest of the Arbiter-Generals, and potentially many times older than everyone else we've seen, so it's not a huge leap to assume Xianzhou natives just age extremely slowly past adulthood and most become mara-struck long before they show signs of advanced age.

Culturally, it seems the age of adulthood for Xianzhou humans is variously considered to be 100-200 years old, which also supports this. I do see that as predominantly a social consequence of their longevity and lifestyle, and indeed we know they tend to appear as adults well before the age of 100, though there are suggestions that continuing to grow taller beyond that age is plausible. My impression is that it's typical to spend up to a century or maybe even longer hovering in that late adolescent almost-fully-grown state, by which point physical development has slowed to a crawl.

Adding Xianzhou cultural notions of what constitutes cognitive and emotional maturity (the mental hallmarks of having existed for hundreds of years) = they spend a long time functionally adults but not quite regarded as such by their society.

☆ Vidyadhara:

By contrast, it seems the Vidyadhara typically age at a rate linearly comparable to short-life humans, just much slower, with physical maturity taking 100-200 years to reach and maximum lifespan being around 700 before they must reincarnate. Though we've seen few examples of this (actually I don't know if there have been any in the game itself, though Dan Heng alludes to it in the 2.5 story) the Vidyadhara do physically grow old as they approach this mark.

Complicating things, it's becoming more common over time for Vidyadhara to have stunted physical growth and spend centuries or even their whole lives with the appearance of children - this seems to be purely physical. Bailu is a special case here as it's hinted that her development is being intentionally blocked by the device on her tail.

High Elders are implied to perhaps also be a special case, though this should be taken with a grain of salt as the evidence here is a comment in the context of an exaggerated story as well as one of Dan Heng's Imbibitor Lunae eidolon pictures. It's possible that they are reborn already being mostly or fully physically mature and do not age normally as a result of inheriting the High Elder powers.

Interactions with the Vidyadhara eggs in Scalegorge Waterscape seem to imply that a Vidyadhara can potentially spend several centuries within an egg before being reborn, as some of the inhabitants of the eggs are suggested to have entered hatching rebirth shortly after the Sedition of Imbibitor Lunae and still have yet to hatch, though it's possible these memory impressions are from previous incarnations.

☆ Foxians:

Foxians are the shortest-lived of the "long-life" Xianzhou inhabitants, with a maximum lifespan between 250-450 years. Notably, they appear physically youthful until almost the end of their natural lives, aging rapidly in their final few years.

We don't have much direct evidence regarding how quickly they grow as children, though at a guess I would say the same as short-life humans given their mechanism of longevity is stated to be "an abundance of powerful stem cells" which doesn't sound like it would slow their development so much as just prevent them from age-related degeneration.

AU fic where billionaire Sun Wukong gets the idea to make a game show to both draw attention to charities and burn some money. (And also get his successor the guy of his dreams.) Azure is his (slightly obsessed) assistant who has to work through the idea with him.

AU of Pignapped where Tang and the kids instead land in the capture where Zhu Bajie joins the journey and must work with Sun Wukong and Tripitaka to wrangle the pig. What Tang also finds is a rival over his husband- Gao Tanghua.

Chapter 6 - The Newly Reborn Kingdom of Zofia

Part 3 - Collapse and Liberation

Perhaps Zeke realized Alm was a prodigy just as Lukas had, and was afraid to fight after that. Maybe he dropped his sword because he saw that Alm was a prodigy, and this was a fight he could not win.

But that couldn't be. At the very least, he certainly wasn't so weak that he would lower his weapon to a prodigy. If Alm was a prodigy, then Zeke had so much confidence, he would even say in response that he himself was above a prodigy. 

"Serve he who has the cross-shaped birthmark." That was what Emperor Rudolf told him one fateful day. He remembered it word for word. That was his current greatest truth in his heart, even more so than his love for Tatiana.

On that day, Desaix had visited Rigel Castle to have an audience with Emperor Rudolf, and was ecstatic to confirm that his corrupt ambitions and the Emperor's plot were in perfect alignment. He took with him a poison developed to be the Rigelian army's greatest weapon, climbed atop one of his Paladin's horses, and returned to Zofia with glee.

Afterwards, Emperor Rudolf called Zeke to the throne room in secret.

For the emperor to meet in the throne room with a general, without even a single guard next to him, was an exception more unusual than any other.

Rigel served War Father Duma, and because of his violent personality, even those of the same bloodline that served each other did not all believe in absolute loyalty to their lord. Whenever the opportunity presented itself, many citizens of Rigel would target their superiors, and taking the head of one's lord was not frowned upon, in fact, it was within the teachings of the Duma Faithful. 

Emperor Rudolf met alone with Zeke not only because he did not want anyone else to know he was about to act entirely unlike an emperor of Rigel, but also because he did not want anyone other than Zeke to know what he was about to say.

"Zeke. You are not from Rigel. Neither are you from Zofia." As Rudolf said that, his expression was very quiet and subdued, the complete opposite of the cruelty he had on his face when speaking with Desaix. "Your skills with your lance and in horseback riding are exceptional, and within the best three soldiers in of all Rigel. For that, I think of you as one of my most reliable men." 

"Thank you, Milord." In keeping with proper manners for a knight, he said no more than that.

"However, Zeke. Don't you find it strange? Why I would choose someone like you, who knows nothing of his own origins, to serve me so closely, no matter how strong you are?"

That was of course a doubt Zeke could not dispel from his mind. An emperor should prioritize choosing soldiers from his own nation to serve such high ranking positions. If he had no issue with making it a goal to choose an outsider like Zeke, then he should take more time to train Zeke up as a high ranking officer, until he was ready.

"Your roots are not within Valentia. If I told you that I value so much because you are not from here, and because you do not know where you came from, you would surely laugh and call me a mad emperor, wouldn't you?"

"Not at all!" Zeke answered simply, but did not understand exactly what Emperor Rudolf was getting at.

"Because you are free from the influence of both Mila and Duma, I believe that you are the one who can fulfill my deepest desire. You will understand the meaning of that at the end of everything.”

Zeke looked up, just a bit, as he sensed that Emperor Rudolf was holding back tears as he spoke. However, the glimpse he saw of Rudolf's face out of the top of his field of vision showed Rudolf's previous quiet, perhaps to hide his tears for a moment.  

"Eventually, a person with a cross-shaped birthmark on his right hand will appear before you. Remember everything that I am about to tell you." Emperor Rudolf emphasized. "There is a person who has a cross-shaped birthmark on his right hand. He is your true lord. Even if following him would lead you to betray me, that is your fate. If you vow your loyalty to me, and know what it truly means to be loyal to me, then you will follow him without question. Understand?"

Emperor Rudolf spoke not another word, and had Zeke immediately dismissed from the throne room. Having an audience with him for any longer might make someone else within the castle suspicious, and walk inside the throne room. Or perhaps Emperor Rudolf might not want anyone else, even Zeke, to see him this way, with a tear falling down his face, hit by a wave of emotion not at all fit for an emperor.

"Yes, Milord." Zeke once again answered simply, asking not a single question and leaving the throne room at once, despite how very strange everything the emperor said was. He had no clue what his lord's true intentions were. All that he could remember was simply the order to follow the man with the cross-shaped birthmark.

So long as it was what Emperor Rudolf ordered him, even if it meant betraying his lord, he should follow that order. Who could this person with the cross-shaped birthmark be? 'Perhaps he is one of Rigel's commanders.' Zeke concluded.

But the truth was as polar opposite to that conclusion as the sun was to the moon. The person with the cross-shaped birthmark was Alm, general of the Deliverance. His greatest enemy, and the one opponent he wished to fight one-on-one, seeking his extraordinary strength.

The true meaning of what Emperor Rudolf ordered was clear to him now. The true lord he was supposed to follow was not from Rigel, but Zofia. His true lord was not an ally, but an enemy. If he followed Emperor Rudolf's orders, then he would betray Emperor Rudolf. But if he did not follow this order, then he would be disloyal to him.

‘I must have been mistaken. What I saw couldn't have been the cross-shaped birthmark. Even if it was cross-shaped, the mark I saw on Alm's hand wasn't my cross-shaped birthmark.' There was no other choice for Zeke right now than for his mind to break. If he were to remain loyal to Emperor Rudolf, then there was no other way for him to do so than to deny that the mark on Alm's right hand was the cross-shaped birthmark.

But what Zeke saw was the birthmark, and it was on Alm's dominant hand. His right hand. This dilemma that assaulted Zeke's mind was so cruel to him that he threw aside his lance and fell to his knees, holding his head in his hands.

Seeing their general lose his mind and act completely unlike himself made his Paladins immediately gather around him. 

The Deliverance's forces thought their enemy's shameful behavior was because of Lukas killing Desaix, and that Zeke had collapsed to his knees because Rigel had lost the stronghold, meaning they failed to invade Zofia.

And so, the Deliverance regrouped with new determination, and waited for the words they knew General Alm would say any second now. "Kill him!" They waited for him to shout with bated breath.

But Alm did not move. Silque had just returned from the watchtower, and as she cast a Heal spell and they waited for the wound on his right arm to close up, Alm simply stared at where he imagined Zeke was within the crowd of Paladins.

"I'm not waiting any longer!" Python lost his patience, lifted his crossbow onto his shoulder, and put a finger on the trigger. 

Alm grabbed it and forced it out of Python's hands. By the time the arrow went off, Python had already lost his aim. It flew through the air and went completely to waste, smashing a rock to pieces instead.

"Why! Why won't you kill him?!" Python lunged at Alm, grabbed him by the chest, and screamed, "Are you really our general?!"

It was impossible to guess exactly what was going through Alm's mind at that moment. For him to hesitate delivering the finishing blow on Zeke, who he'd immediately sensed was one of his greatest enemies, he must have come to feel a shred of compassion for him after they crossed their sword and lance, and felt that he had to return a favor to him. Or perhaps he felt that a clear winner and loser in this battle had already been decided in their one-on-one fight. To fight all of Zeke's forces would cause more sacrifices to be made after having only lost Kliff until now, and maybe he feared there being any more here, no matter how few. Alm also had no way of knowing what Zeke’s words during their fight meant, nor why he shouted them at him.

Even Alm probably couldn't figure out what his own true intentions were, but regardless, he still avoided fighting Zeke here any further.

"Python." Alm said quietly, Python's grip still tight on his shirt. "He's already lost the will to fight. I can't strike a person who doesn't want to fight. We are Zofia. We cannot fall off the path of righteousness like Rigel has."

In response, Python finally loosened his grip, picked up his crossbow that had fallen to the ground and landed at his feet, and returned it to its holder on his back.

"Sometimes, it is best for us to show compassion." Gray said to him.

"The battle is over. The Kingdom of Zofia has been reborn!" Alm's expression relaxed, but only for a moment before it became grim once again. He stepped away from the restored Knights of Zofia and looked up at Zeke's forces.

Zeke was still clearly telling his Paladins something. The group in black uniforms all prepared to retreat, with no sign that they had even a shred of desire to attack.

When they saw enemy General Alm approaching them, the Paladins all moved slowly. They looked like they were opening a heavy gate, until Zeke finally reappeared, as if his golden silhouette was emerging from within a blossoming flower.

"Zeke!" Alm extended his right arm, his birthmark clearly visible, and pointed directly at him. "Go back to Rudolf and give him this message. The Kingdom of Zofia has been reborn. In the name of Princess Anthiese, we, the reborn Knights of Zofia, have rid ourselves completely of Desaix's threat. So long as we are here, he will never be able to touch our beloved Zofia ever again. Your tainted knights of Rigel will never step foot on Zofian land ever again. And I won't just make sure Rudolf never lays a hand on Zofia." Alm narrowed his eyes even further. “These words are for Rudolf alone. I will cut off your ugly head one day. I am Alm, direct descendent of Holy Knight Mycen and General of the reborn Knights of Zofia. Know that when I introduce myself to you directly, it will be in Rigel's final moments!

Even as they left the castle and marched back to the border, in the end, Zeke's Paladins had not been able to protect Desaix, nor even defeat Alm. But as great, honorable knights, they did not show even a single shred of regret, marching their horses on at their standard pace. So long as General Zeke did not declare their defeat, they would not see themselves as having been defeated. Knowing that made his Paladins the greatest army in all of Valentia.

"Start marching without me!" Zeke shouted out his orders, then stopped alone, waited for all of his Paladins to get ahead of him, and looked back at the stronghold, the battle not yet over. Beneath his golden hair, the sight of Alm's birthmark was so vivid in his mind that it felt as if his eyes were staring straight at it. 

"We will meet again. Somewhere, someday." Zeke said quietly and pulled back on his reins, making his horse neigh loudly and chase after the dust clouds his Paladins were leaving behind.

I love your writing! I just discovered your story, but Vendetta is now my favorite interactive fiction, tied with A Mage Reborn. I cried so hard when Viktor died even though it's literally mentioned in the summary!

Question: how would Grampa, Uncle, Ash, Takashi, and Rin react to an MC who runs away like Viktor did? Like maybe MC realized what the 20th birthday party was going to be about and they were like, "aight, I'mma head out" and just no-showed the party. Then when everyone got back, MC was nowhere to be found.

And maybe for the other characters, how would they react if MC just became a civilian? (Since they were not at the party.)

As for the scenario you asked about… Grandpa, Luka, and Ash will absolutely panic, like super panic. While Takashi and Rin would be worried. For Grandpa, Luka, and Takashi, it would almost be like a déjà vu with what Viktor did decades ago.

Their very first thought will be that the person who killed Viktor has finally gotten ahold of MC. Or if not them, then it’ll be the rival groups. So those will be where they strike first.

The next few weeks, they will all be busy searching every nook and cranny of the city. They would be willing to tear it down if necessary if it means finding MC and bringing them to safety. Takashi and Rin would be helping and lending support, mainly through their information gathering and their own web of connections.

They would not only use their underground connections, but also those in the ECPD, most likely by having them ask other police departments in other cities to be on a lookout for MC.

But once they find (and Grandpa, Luka, and Ash will or die trying 😭) MC trying to live as a civilian, they would be angry but also relieved. “MC, you idiot! Why did you not just have a talk with us about it?”

And truly, if MC was adamant on their decision to not be the heir, then Grandpa and Luka would not force them anymore. They would not want a repeat of what happened with Viktor.

If your MC wants to be a civilian, they would really want MC to stay as near as them, preferably in one city, to make sure they’ll still be able to protect MC in case something is going to happen. After all, MC will always be someone really important and loved by Grandpa, Luka, and Ash, which means they have a target on their back at all times.

The only reason MC can actually live peacefully right now is because almost all of those in Elysium City’s (and New York’s) underground world are afraid and wary of MC’s family’s reputation. To poke the sleeping bear (well, targeting MC would be like slapping the said bear, not poke 😂) would be suicidal. Just ask the Police Commissioner.
