Welcome to the blog where I explore my vigilante OC, Solitaire, and her brother Blackjack, so I can eventually write a comic starring them (the working title of which is currently 'Card Games').

For now, the plot of the comic is still being worked on, and right now I'm exploring their personalities (+etc) by drawing them. Things are subject to change through the process, and we'll see where we end up when I get started!

Dossiers

Solitaire, civilian name Charlotte, is a strong-willed, care free young woman who loves a good card trick, and can't help but get tied up in trouble. She's too curious for her own good, and this is often her downfall. Blackjack, civilian name Jordan, is a quiet, yet driven young man, calm and impenetrable. He's passionate when it comes to his sister, and always follows her straight into danger, even when it goes against his own instincts.

I honestly can't wait to see Adrien's reaction to the whole engagement thing. I wonder whether he will get jealous and just. Not completely, if at all, understand where it comes from. He just wants to hang out with his dear friend Marinette it's not like her engagement changes anything, right? And meanwhile his fae hindbrain is seething.

I may be pointing out something completely obvious, but Round 7 takes place immediately after Round 6?

Hyuna is still there, bleeding. Like it's so unlikely that Mizi and Hyuna have just been roaming for days. Like after round 6, it's been maybe a few hours at most?

My thoughts are a mess rn but damn that sucks for Till if that's true (not that it doesn't suck if it's not).

Ivan dies in front of him, then he has a change of outfit and immediately has to move onto the next Round. No wonder he looks so fatigued, like he's about to pass out at any moment.

Did he even get to eat or drink anything? I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't, but still.

you should watch alien stage 😁 it’s a really wholesome and heartwarming web series on YouTube by VIVINOS. Nothing bad happens! And I think that you would like it!

So before I checked out Alien Stage, I asked an irl about it to get a feel for the series. They jokingly described Alien Stage to me as "Hunger Games with doomed yuri and yaoi plus some toxic het on the side", and after catching up with the playlist of hits... yeah, that's pretty accurate. I'm so invested in this now 🤡

I have Ruler of My Heart stuck in my head, specifically this English cover of it! To probably no one's surprise, I'm really gravitating to Luka... WHAT CAN I SAY, I LOVE ANGELIC LOOKING CHARACTERS WITH PRINCELY AND CHARISMATIC PERSONAS THAT ARE ACTUALLY SO MANIPULATIVE AND SCUMMY. AFSLFAYOEFIYFAEEAF; AND HOW CAN I NOT ADORE A GUY THAT PULLS THSI KINDA FACE:

I think part of his charm is that contrast between how he's seen as a "prince" by his fans when he's anything but. The artists outdid themselves with the MV; it perfectly conveys how truly terrible Luka is. I was so uncomfortable watching the video play out. The way he progressively creeps closer and keeps invading Mizi's personal space, taunting her, imitating her dead bestie/crush, putting his hands all over her, AND THAT GROSS WHISTLE HE DOES IN THE BEGINNING???? That made my skin CRAWL. Luka is for real so awful and I love that for him-- MIZI WAS RIGHT TO SWING AT HIM, IT WAS CATHARTIC 💀

I wanna give big props to Mizi's facial expressions too... They're so despair-filled and delicious, even when it's just her widened eyes repeating on the screen. The animation specifically for the line "I don't believe you're a liar" is top tier 👌 It's nothing fancy, but it conveys just how distressed Mizi is and how that's impacting her ability to sing. The way she gulps is so punchy and visceral. THE HATE IN MIZI'S EYES AS SHE'S RESTRAINED FROM COMING AT HIM AGAIN???? Good stuff. The twist at the end where the stage gets smoke bombed (?) and Mizi is rescued by the rebellion was great too. It robs Luka of the satisfaction of seeing his rival gunned down and him being declared as the victor. (P.S. I thought Hyuna was Jamil when I first saw her design; this is proof that Jamil has cool onee-san energy/j) Super looking forward to seeing Luka square off against Till, who is another favorite of mine. The eyebags— Till the End is probably my second favorite song so far; it's so intense in the close-up shots of Till singing his heart out to the audience. (Poor Mob-kun though, bro's getting DESTROYED out here...) I admire Till's fighting spirit but at the same time I feel so bad every time he's subdued 💦 Whereas I want Luka to get knocked down a peg, I want Till to find happiness and safety...

An Analysis of the complexity behind HyunA's revenge

Hyuna has complicated feelings for Luka that find themselves intermingling love and hatred. I love that that part of her character was expanded on through this comic. It is a whole other level of anger for her to throw herself away for the sake of her beliefs, for the sake of her justice, for all those years she spent in pain and having to persevere despite that because of Luka. Still, the way those feelings co-exist is puzzling for her, too, because of all these remaining sentiments she still has for Luka, the betrayal HyunA felt knowing she loved someone she resented so much.

And knowing that he loved her back, so much so he loved her more than himself. No matter what, through that connection, HyunA will always be attached to Luka, and Luka will never stop loving her. HyunA resented seeing herself on those posters, knowing that Luka would be overjoyed that through them, it confirmed to him she was still alive and their bond still existed. While HyunA spent so long trying to avoid it all. She's gotten so far after escaping Alien stage and joining the rebellion and she's actually living a life that she can call her own. Everything would be so much easier if she could forget him, but she's still constantly reminded of Luka, she lives with the burden of holding Luka's devotion in her palm, the guilt she has because she still loves him so much she couldn't crush it right then and there.

HyunA is a character haunted by guilt. On the inside, she has a heart more troubled and complex than the confidence she exudes on the outside. Hyunwoo's death haunted her. She didn't want to acknowledge what happened to him, the nature of his death was pure torture on her conscience. The grief and the guilt she had over ignoring reality and still loving the man who killed the person she loved most made HyunA angry at herself. She couldn't forgive herself for betraying her brother; by extension, she could never forgive Luka.

HyunA resented him for all of it. For running back to her and seeking her out after what he did, The way Luka was always her weak spot no matter what he did because her attachment to him was so strong. She could never forget her innocent perception of that little boy she played with and remembered following her around the garden. After all, the opposite of love and hate is just apathy, HyunA never stopped caring about Luka, so she couldn't move on or force herself to be apathetic towards her feelings for him.

She was once told to forgive herself by the past rebellion leader, but she couldn't as long as she was still held back by the past. HyunA lived in anger and resentment toward Luka for years. To Luka, who never truly understood the gravity of what he did to her, what she had to do, or the coping mechanisms she resorted to so she could deal with the emotional turmoil he left her in. To Luka, who loved her so much, leaving him would be her retribution, her ultimate revenge. Giving him back the same burden he left her with so that he would confront a reality crueler than death: A life without her. Without any possible way to deny it. The overwhelming sensation of grief and suffering he would feel would be her way of avenging her dead brother and that devastated child in her.

But there are many layers to HyunA's feelings, so that's not truly it. There was still a part of her that laid down her life for Luka because she couldn't see him die, she left him with those last words because she wanted him to do something with what she said for himself in her absence.

It is compassionate of HyunA to know and acknowledge the suffering Luka went through all his life. But she knows Luka hasn't experienced losing someone he cared deeply about like this until now. Before, he could at least confirm HyunA’s existence in their time apart. But what can he do now?

Luka is a person so alienated from his humanity. For instance, from a young age, he was trained to "overcome" the most natural human instinct, emotions. His purpose was for the stage, so the aliens made him into something that ultimately functioned how they wanted him to. He's emotionally stunted, he exploits others callously for his own benefit, and he conforms to the aliens' expectations: to be a tool the aliens could control and use until the end of his life. Of course, it’s not like Luka was aimless; he tried to understand by himself. He wanted a connection with HyunA, he wanted to understand but didn't know how to express himself properly, in his efforts, he caused her so much hurt and discomfort in the aftermath. Ultimately, he can’t truly comprehend human emotions until he’s lived them. A book can’t replicate that.

He hasn't experienced HyunA’s struggle, that tunnel of guilt she's still trying to find her way out of so that she can keep growing up, moving on, and learning how to keep living. He doesn't understand how she feels. It shows in his obliviousness to her suffering in Wiege, the blunt dismissal of her efforts at moving on because he thinks she's just foolishly running away.

So, in a selfish and selfless final act, she saves Luka. Before, I thought HyunA didn't let anger guide her, but this does change that. She is still a person who selflessly prioritizes what she cares about first before herself even now, but being a person who’s not always righteously led by “what's right” humanizes her so much in this scenario. It shows how much her trauma affected her and how it can bring out the most visceral of emotions in people. Despite all those years she spent growing up, she will never escape herself.

Her hatred is so deep-seated and personal. Saving Luka was impulsive of her, she didn’t plan it beforehand, but as aforementioned, she’s been living with this anger for years. Seeing that look on his face, knowing what he was going to do, and knowing what was going to happen, she just moved. The way he hurt HyunA changed her in a way he'd never had a chance to understand before, she wanted him to experience all of it for once. All of the same pain and the struggles she had to live with. She wanted to leave him in the same lost and confused state he left her in.

But at the same time, her love still co-exists with this anger, her love was so great despite that she gave him those final words because she sincerely wanted him to live and do what she did, find his own way through that pain and survive it without her. All the while finally connecting with a part of himself that had been suppressed for a long time. Exposing him to human vulnerability was her way of getting revenge and giving him the kick he needed to take the opportunity she left for him. Whether he will or won't, wants to or not, or he will die the same boy he was born as. And that’s a guarantee based on what he does next.

Luka analyzes people like objects and puzzles, not as actual humans. So HyunA left him with a lesson to learn. A puzzle so complex, emotional, and undeniably human that he can’t possibly solve it without gaining back what was taken from him, his humanity. HyunA did this so that he would be forced to re-evaluate everything he thought he ever knew. He will never truly understand HyunA's words, her motivations, her suffering, or her death without gaining a human perspective. In this way, to him, her death will be both a consequence and atonement for all he's done.

HyunA had to do the same thing before. Luka was a puzzle she solved years ago. She describes him best in those few sentences because she knows him best. She resents him so much for what he's done to her, but she can still see Luka for who he is. She can't help but recognize him as a person she couldn't help but pity, a person she couldn't help but love despite it all. She has a big heart that is inevitably unable to close itself off from people she cares about, no matter how in the right she would’ve been for completely hating Luka. Her love for him is gentle and genuine as much as it is twisted and complicated

HyunA's revenge is complex and contradictory. It is exploitative, brutal, and selfish, a cruel way of teaching Luka how it feels to be in her position. But in a twisted way, it is loving. She wanted Luka to suffer in the way he deserved. At the same time, she genuinely wanted him to grow and change, to find his own answer just like she had to. This is the only way he would ever do that.

I adore this direction Vivinos took with her character, I figured the idea I had of her before aligned just as well with her character as this, but seeing her mixed feelings for Luka acknowledged this way feels more considerate of her character and her feelings. I wanted HyunA to think about herself more and to act more cruelly, I wanted more intention from her. She is still the selfless and endlessly caring person she was before, but I'm glad she got to act on her anger and find satisfaction to some extent by making Luka suffer, and through this comic, she got to come to terms with her feelings and the complexities of her situation in a way she'd been avoiding before

au where marinette's parents own a small, struggling, but community-loved bakery outside of paris. she works after school and on weekends since her parents can't currently afford to hire any other employees, but she enjoys getting to know everyone in her neighborhood and uses her tip money to fund her sewing projects.

as the end of her junior high days approach, marinette is encouraged by her parents to apply to her dream high school, françoise dupont lycée of the arts, as a fashion student. she doesn't expect to actually get accepted, but knows her parents are right when they say there's no hurt in trying. after submitting her online store portfolio, where she does commissions and launches small projects like accessories, she receives feedback that the school board was beyond impressed with her work and would like to offer her a full-ride scholarship.

although it's hard for her to part from her parents for the first time in her life, they refuse to let her turn down the opportunity and practically pack her bags for her. after a very long and painful goodbye with lots of promises to call every single day, marinette leaves for paris.

she meets alya, her roommate and first friend at her new school. she's the daughter of a successful chef and is a promising journalist and creative writing student, she and marinette share many of their core subjects not relating to their majors.

marinette also meets chloé, the daughter of the mayor of france and alya's life-long enemy. the two go way back, with alya's mother being an old friend of chloe's father and having worked at his hotel restaurant before. the hate each other, and by association, chloé hates marinette — especially after finding out marinette is a fellow fashion major whose work scored much higher than her own.

then she meets adrien. adrien is a fellow fashion and modeling student who was eagerly accepted into the school despite his very late application. however, the principal was thrilled at the idea of having such a beloved model joining the student body, and didn't want to deal with chloé's threats of action if adrien was denied, so he was accepted with open arms.

adrien didn't exactly choose his majors, but rather just went along with what was expected of him. he already had a successful modeling career, so he took the classes despite there being little he didn't already know and have mastered. he was encouraged to join fashion classes as well, both by adults who assumed he was going to take after his father and by his best friend who wanted to spend as much time with him as possible.

adrien is easily impressed with just about every design marinette crafts and marinette admits it's a bit endearing the way adrien struggles to figure out where the sewing machine's on switch is. his father is equally impressed, if not even more so, and marinette is asked to become a paid intern upon winning a contest judged by gabriel agreste.

not to mention the kind old man she befriends, an older chinese man who owns a tea shop in petite asie. marinette admits to feeling a bit alienated without her mother, worried her classmates will look at her funny for cooking guangxi rice in the dorm kitchen or having late night gossip sessions on the phone in mandarin. he tells marinette she will always have a friend while in paris and that she's more connected to the city than she thinks.

eventually, marinette even finds herself befriending almost all of her classmates, and even one of her classmate's brothers. juleka couffaine is a modeling major and a fellow scholarship student, something she and marinette bond over. luka is just as sweet as his sister, and almost as quiet if you ignore his constant humming and guitar strumming.

he also applied to be a music major at françoise dupont, but was rejected. after a year of struggling and being bullied in public school, he dropped out to focus on working and supporting his family — taking some of the burden away from his single mother and making sure juleka never has to go without. throughout the course of their relationship, marinette is eventually able to discover the ridiculous reasons why luka wasn't accepted and encourages him to go back to school, as well as accept that he can't support his family if he doesn't let them support him as well (a lesson she also had to learn).

Welcome to my OC blog!

Ok before we start, lowkey this is so embarrassing but yk what the world is weird I'm not evil for having whimsy.

This blog is just for my vigilante OC Solitaire, and art/writing I make for her. It's not like she doesn't fit in with my main blog, but I wanted to push myself to give her some actual.. content this year I suppose? So I'm giving her her own blog!

Who is Solitaire?

Technically, Solitaire was created around the time we were all making spidersonas (because of the second Spiderverse film) - she had a really different design back then, and I wasn't as good at art, so I didn't draw her out of her suit very much. I had ideas for her, a little backstory, and... then put her to the back of my mind when I started doing other things.

Enter my sudden interest in DC during August 2024. It got me drawing a lot, got me wanting her to play with those characters - and why shouldn't she! So although I don't consider her a Marvel OR DC oc, she can exist in those worlds to do what she wants.

I've come to absolutely adore her, and want to draw her and write about her more, ESPECIALLY now that my art is better. She's likely going to be drawn with Marvel/DC characters that I like, as well as eventually getting her own villains and plotlines, very likely involving her brother Jordi, who is also very beloved in my heart. He's just as important but she's the main character. You know what I mean? Justice for Jordan, when's his solo run?!

I want to get back into drawing comics so BAD you don't even know.

Oh sidenote her name is solitaire because as a child I played a lot of Spider Solitaire so... spidersona that does card tricks.

Who is Solitaire [lore version]?

Charlotte was an abandoned child (the backstory ever) because her parents, upon having her younger brother (Jordan), decided they couldn't handle it. They left them at home alone and disappeared one night, and the children were only saved when a neighbour complained about loud incessant crying. So, they were taken to grow up in an orphanage in a pretty nasty part of the city - and though their guardians weren't bad people, they had too much work on their plates to be watching every child at once.

Because of this, Charlotte would sneak out often, and her brother would follow behind (the separation anxiety is strong with this one). One day, they managed to sneak into the circus, and became enamoured by it - Jordan especially. So they begged the circus to take them and train them, going so far as to have the person in charge come to the orphanage and discuss the details. The orphanage pushed back because they couldn't just give children away without background checks and the like, but they really were overwhelmed with the others in their charge. They chose to turn a blind eye and refer to the children as runaways, but gave them their blessing and asked that they return to perform for them once they grew up. (One thing about me, I want to believe in the goodness of people's hearts, lmao)

Charlotte would grow up to become a sleight-of-hand classic magician, and a knife-thrower. (note: they can both do a little of everything, they just have specialties!) Jordan is an escape artist, and loves firebreathing and sword-swallowing. He's a little bit of an adrenaline junkie, while she's an extremely laid back, precision player. Their canon incident happens when they're almost 19, returning to their home city to perform, as promised.

NOW. Depending on the genuine timeline, the marvel timeline, and the DC timeline, the story branches off from here ahaha. So we'll leave it there for now. I hope this gives a kind of basic explanation of their character-types and storyline, at least!

Extra note: They both enjoy acrobatics, are fairly comfortable tossing each other around, and trust one another implicitly - though Charlotte also trusts others fairly well, and Jordan finds it difficult to trust anyone but Charlotte.

the difference between luka and ivan's appeal to the segyein is that ivan can perfectly match the expectations they have, while luka gives them something they didn't even know they wanted to see

probably why luka can get away with so much, like when he puts his hands on till's neck... the audience knows he'll do something interesting, so it's allowed because what the segyein are truly interested in isn't just the best singer, but the best performance
