Midori One Day One Page 90!

Something a little self-indulgent for the last day of Lufia Week! Basically I like to think that after the events of Fortress of Doom Jerin continued to visit Artea on the regular... it's implied she doesn't know much about her elven heritage (she states she can't read Elvish very well) and has a connection to Artea through the bow, so why not further? And he can teach her his unique magic from Rise the Sinistrals!

Alright, 2023 is almost over, but still ✨Happy 30th Anniversary✨ to the Lufia series! 🎂🎈

This was the original unfinished drawing. Next time I do a big group picture I'll pick a more simple coloring style than that😅 So I made a quick alternate colored version using the paint bucket for now, I just want this out before the year is over since 2023 is the 30th anniversary of the Lufia series

finished lufia 2. i don't have as many thoughts as i expected but it was very very very good. and also reminded me of ff2 which is always fun. it's like what i imagine golden sun to be if it was good (i think). the plot definitely existed just to get to dungeon a to dungeon b but all of the dungeons were hella fun. the enemies are on the map too so that's always nice. music is good, ancient cave was fun and it was fun to grind and level up and whatnot. i loved the characters and when (spoilers i guess lol) dekar came back to fight everyone i cheered. DEKAR'S THE BEST. i also like guy and artea and maxim and selan. very fun.

idk what to play next but it probably won't be lufia 1 LOL!! if anyone has any good games from nes-ps1 era and/or is on a handheld console hmu im always looking for recs

Lufia Update: I went to the red tower and really struggled with the boss, the dark ghost, there. The internet helped me with a tactic and after a few tries, I was victorious. And then we had to put the gems into each tower and climb all of them again.. at least I already got all the treasures... Anyway, we finally made it to Elfrea and found Artea, who told us where Dual Blade probably is and that we should find Lexis' descendant. Before I am going to him though, I went to the old cave and did the next two quests I was suited for. And now it is time to go to a mountain tunnel and see what is wrong there...

Estpolis - A Psychic's Perspective (Lufia)

Let's start by saying Fortress of Doom never happened. In fact, it started out on another planet as a poorly received game. So, let's begin with the second game.

The common tongue was Portuguese. Guy spoke Spanish, in Bound Kingdom they spoke Arabic, in Portravia they spoke Esperanto. The elves spoke Danish.

The day sky was always pink or orange because of how small the sun was.

The equator went through Narvick and Gruberick. If you draw out the tectonic plates based on the underwater trenches and Premarl, you'll find the land was warped to fit the map and make the map playable.

If you haven't figured it out, Narvick's community were the guardians of the gods.

At the end, there is a door that is blocked off. This could have been a secret ending where Maxim fought Alekdias one on one. If you defeated Alekdias, his mask would break to reveal he was really Idura.

Guy has vivid prophetic dreams. He doesn't talk about them because he feels he won't be taken seriously.

Dekar invented the song "Blood", which My Chemical Romance completed for him.

If the game was made today, Guy's seasickness may be considered to show.

After Maxim and Selena got married and went off to save the world and they meet Dekar and Guy, Guy has fallen pregnant. (The gods can get pregnant no matter the gender) It's very well concealed by the hardware limitations.

Once Maxim died and Guy and Artea went home to wait for him, the world ended, and everybody was frozen in time.

Tia is with Dick Gumshoe!

Tia was actually pretty tough. Again, hardware limitations, but she took status effects a lot easier than the others.

Bats and vampires avoided Guy...

Jeros is pronounced "Heros".

Guy's axe is called Lucah Djinn.

My Experience

There was this weird time where everyone was encased in these cubicles. The first I met was Maxim. He said "I'm looking for Tia and Guy". For some reason I showed him my palm, and he promised to remember me. (My fate line is a priphea)

Guy was three months pregnant when I met him. After everyone got transferred into this massive hospital, Kurt Cobain met with Guy and they started talking. This moment was when I realised Guy was my brother (making Hilda my sister).

Selena and I helped Lin (think Fire Emblem) out.

Dekar slept on my couch.

Tia came to my house looking for Gumshoe and she knocked some Tupperware to the floor, and I got up her for it lol.

Guy sometimes comes up to me with music he heard out of nowhere. They're from the games. Today he showed me For the Saviour.

Took me 33 levels, but I found a Blue Chest!  Boom Turban, Baby!!  Not only can Artea wear it if I want Selan to have the Agility boost (as he’s faster than anything) but it’s a good item for her as well!  So I can swap who has that and who has the Aqua Helm based on need if I’m going in.

Now...one of the three weapons Artea can wield and we’ll be in the best shape to leave the cave behind and have my elf ready on arrival!

Slow day at work and I have Lufia on the brain, so I’m gonna rate the original Rise Of The Sinistrals designs against the remake Curse Of The Sinistrals redesigns.

Maxim

vs

I honestly don’t have strong feelings about either Maxim design. They’re both good Main Character Designs, one for a strongly medieval flavored world and one for an anachronistic world. I will say the redesign has a little more character; I like the waist wrap in particular.

Winner: Curse of the Sinistrals

Tia

vs

Honestly... this is one where they changed her personality enough that she might as well be a different character. I like the weapon suitcase - it makes sense considering RotS!Tia owned a weapon shop - but I also like the idea of her beating up monsters with a ribbon.

Verdict: A tie; given my way I’d frankenstein them together. I’d also kinda like to see boisterous new Tia with old Tia’s design, OR milder old Tia with new Tia’s design.

Guy

vs

I’ll be honest: I didn’t like Guy’s new look at first. But it did grow on me - especially when you take his rivalry with Dekar into account (see below). Still, I feel like the original look suits his personality a bit better.

Verdict: Rise of the Sinistrals by a very slim margin.

Selan

vs

Oh I LOVE the new one. The old Selan is beautiful and elegant, but the new one is both while looking more like the military commander she is. Very nice. The pigeon-toed stance is a little odd, but I’ll let it slide. This time.

Verdict: Curse of the Sinistrals. She’s so cool!

Dekar

vs

BOTH VERY GOOD. About the only problem with the old version is that is doesn’t really get Dekar’s outgoing, silly personality across - otherwise, very cool! Meanwhile the new Dekar makes his rivalry with Guy ten times funnier - the two of them competing to see who’s stronger and Dekar winning every time is amusing enough with the old designs, but Huge Guy constantly being outdone by a man half his size who doesn’t even seem to bother with armor or weapons is hilarious.

Verdict: ALL DEKARS ARE VALID. (it’s be neat if New Dekar had a baby blue streak in his hair to echo old Dekar’s red, though.)

Lexis

vs

Eeeeengh. The Doc Brown reference is all well and good, but I like the scrappy Lexis who actively participated better. I could jive to the Doc Brown wannabe being the mentor to Lexis, but... he doesn’t feel like Lexis.

Verdict: Rise of the Sinistrals stands on his own better, I think.

Artea

vs

....eh. Admittedly this is another case where the original art doesn’t get the personality across - in-game, it’s much clearer that Arty is for all intents and purposes a teenager - but the new version feels more generic. It doesn’t help that they traded Artea’s vibrant, sometimes-contentious personality for a stereotypical Aloof Elf in the remake, which... DOES come across in the art. Credit where it’s due though, giving him a gun is incredibly funny.

Verdict: Rise of the Sinistrals has more personality in design, even if his character doesn’t quite come across.

Iris

vs

VERY NICE. Iris’ new design has a perfect mystical vibe! I have no idea what they were going for in the old one and to be honest she looks too much like Artea.

Verdict: Curse of the Sinistrals. No contest.

IN CONCLUSION both have gorgeous art with pros and cons to most of the designs! It’s unfortunate that CotS cut and changed so much of the original’s world and quests and rewrote Artea and Lexis to such detriment (Tia is much closer to her original self, just louder); its to the point where it feels more like an AU than a remake. 

But I like both! There’s a lot to love in both games, and while RotS is a fuller experience there are plot changes in CotS that I DO like, so... I dunno, a rewrite where I just cobble what I like about both together has its temptations.

It was actually supposed to be Alundra stuff. But it requires me breaking out my borked second controller for the debug code. XP Yeah yeah. I'll get to it. -.-;; I did end up doing some Odds & Ends for Lufia though. Plus three videos since I found a bunch of codes.

I happened to find a whole bunch of Lufia 2 codes by relnqshd.  Most of the codes are from this user. But there are some from others users. There are a lot of weird and fun codes to mess with. They were found here: http://users.skynet.be/fa945195/temp/L2_BoardArch/14133529.html When I saw that there were codes to customize the party I decided to see what would happen if you forced an empty party. As you can see from the video it causes a multitude of glitches and battles either end in a game over or a freeze. If you activate the code right before loading a file you will not be able to access the menu or shops. Doing so will bring you back to the Natsume screen. Battles will end in a game over. The game sees your empty party and assumed you are all dead I guess. If you activate the code during a game in progress you can use the menu and shops. But the party sprites are glitched. If you attempt to enter a battle you can run away. But you won't be able to fight. After choosing your commands the game will just hang. Having a capsule monster active does not prevent this or the empty party game over. A capsule monster won't act in an empty party. While your party sprites are still shown as normal in towns and Maxim appears as normal on the world map and in dungeons, the battle sees an empty party if you change all party values to FF (nobody).  And yes, you can use this code to play as a party of whoever you want. To avoid some issues, if you want empty slots make sure to make those slots at the end of the party list. To make changes permanent save at a church/save point. Just make sure you turn the code off to avoid glitches. If you check out the thread I linked you'll see tips on how to properly use these codes. https://youtu.be/m5pp9_CGejw Lufia 2 codes: Shop breaking, file deleting, no random battling code! I found this code on GameFAQs while looking for a no random battles code. This was a code that the creator, Ugetab, found by accident. It doesn't just turn off random battles. It screws with the shops. And I've discovered that it can also force the game back to the Natsume screen and possibly even delete your file. This code is cool. But be really careful with it. You can lose your progress. At least do it on a duplicate file. If you use L/R to scroll you may find some interesting items in the shop list. Some appear as blank spaces and I think that some items may be glitched. It's not shown here but I once saw a gauntlet occupying a blank space. And it bumped Maxim's defense up to 999. His stats were the same as what you see in the video. So that's impossible. I have no idea if glitched equipment does what it says or is even safe to use. So proceed with caution. No equip is a blank space item that doesn't cost anything and won't sell for anything. It won't show up in your inventory either. Although it will show up in the shop menu as sellable.  I don't know if it's the same "No equip" from the equip screen or not. It may be something that has to do with blank spaces that occur in the smaller shop lists. You just aren't meant to see or interact with it normally. Ugetab has another no random battles code that may be safer:  7E11E300 I have not tried this code myself though. Midori One Day One Page 87!

Artea! My other other favorite character! I've previously always drawn him based on the Lufia II manual art... because I've always drawn him in Fortress of Doom era, and that design best fits his vibe in that game. This time, though, I went for something based on his Lufia II sprite and his Estpolis I manual art. All of his SNES designs are pretty great honestly....

Inktober #8 - Stan, Detar and Caric (original characters) Markers, some pigment liner and gelly roll pen. ~photo version and character talk below~

Detar’s face was smudged, so I fixed that digitally in the scanned version. Also, instead of having every single marker I used on the photo, I decided to just put one of each brand instead.

These are my old Lufia OCs from 2001.  Stan is Maxim's descendant. Detar is Dekar's descendant and was a security guard at the casino before he was fired. He joins Stan’s journey since he has nothing better to do when he became jobless. He’s also Stan’s best friend.  Caric is a traveling merchant elf.

Long, long ago, Caric basically looked like a Artea recolor (based on his artwork - not his ingame sprite). And Detar used to look like a Dekar clone in modern clothes Detar’s name is a combination of “Dekar” and “Two” and I originally wanted to rename him when he was still a Dekar clone, but decided to leave his name as is after discovering  it was a variant of a German name which means "Warrior of the people”

Detar has definitely changed the most out of these three characters,.

Stan used to have long hair in 2001.

Caric hasn’t changed that much, other than getting his hair cut early on and having a new outfit in 2014..

Lufia Update: After I looked around in Lorbenia, I left to wander and found Grenoble. There was an Old Cave nearby which seems to be the predecessor to the Ancient Cave. I went into it and then I got stuck. After looking it up, I learned that I need to rest at the inn in Lorbenia so that Aguro comes! My guys weren't hurt so why should I have done that! Arghl! Anyway, in there we learned about a kid that stole from Lufia earlier and he clearly is a descendant of the inventor Lexis from the prequel-sequel. I finally could continue the story and then... ...got my ass kicked in the northwest tower. Several times. Yeah, that game is harder than the prequel-sequel. I managed it though after I had to come back two times or so (and loaded a save state because I am not dealing with this long ass ways full of random battles all the time) and learned where Artea is. He still is very far away though, so yeah, will take some time until we meet him. I wonder when we will get the fourth member for the party?

Lufia Update: It felt like I went nowhere yesterday and now the story just seems to rush away! So much actually that I had to stop and grind a little to beat a boss fight. Today I learned that spells are learned in this game and not bought, that everyone will randomly attack groups of enemies (I slowly am getting behind the system) and that Guy from the prequel-sequel is still alive! But he died like right away, so yeah... Anyway, we are now searching Artea, the elf, who as in the final team of the prequel-sequel. Honestly, it is fun to play this game with all the knowledge of the prequel storywise ^^ So many things to recognize.
