this is a little out of order but i saw an internet quote from the physical dracula daily book and had to draw it - that Lucy was playing out an Otome dating sim while Jonathan is having the worst time of his life XD

Modern Dracula retellings of any media tend to erase Lucy's mother, in favor of making Lucy more grown up (and thus her encounters with Dracula to be hot), more sexually forward (only to get punished for it), and an independent woman. Often claiming that this "fixes" her story.

However, Mrs Westenra is important to exist partly because it makes Lucy such a Persephone figure.

A daughter (kore/κόρη) on the cusp of adolescence and adulthood, taken forcibly away from the living to the land of the dead by the lord of Death, to marry him (white clothes in her tomb, when she was supposed to be in a bridal dress soon), to dwell in darkness for eternity under his ultimate power.

Lucy also dies/"goes to the underworld" on the Autumn Equinox, signaling winter coming and light (the meaning of Lucy's name) fading for darkness to reign.

Peresphone's abduction to the underworld, a girl taken away by death too early, mourned, was meant to be a tragedy. And so is Lucy's story.

Maybe part of why Dracula adaptations generally haven’t known what to do about Jonathan Harker is because he hasn't got one story arc, he's got three.

At Dracula's castle he's a Final Girl in a suspense horror, last canny survivor in a "no one gets out alive" scenario

At the Hospital of St. Joseph and St. Mary, and for awhile after, he's one of two Vulnerable Princesses in need of Safekeeping (Lucy Westenra is of course the other) that Mina, competent as she is, risks *not* being able to juggle the necessities for... at least not well enough to keep both safe.

White-haired Jonathan with cold hands, stropping his Kukri in the odd moments he's waiting, is down to make an Orpheus run of sorts for Mina, but he's decided already that if he can't pull her out, he stays with her anyway.

It's not impossible to do a good job with Jonathan, but it's apparently too much for the average adaptation

Cultural osmosis: Lucy is the socialite, the extroverted one, ditzy blonde who won't stop flirting with everyone and can't stay in one place or not strike up conversations without a care. An adventuress. Mina is the introverted bookworm whose eyes are lowered shyly and has one friend. Her quiet pure nature steals Dracula's heart.

Mina in the book: "If I won't immediately explore the entirety of this town, climb 199 steps to document every ominous and morbid nook and cranny, and talk to the locals there to befriend them so they'll tell me everything I want to know, from barghests to whaling, I will EXPLODE."

Personally I don't like the whole "actually Dracula is incompetent and dumb lol" meme because it's both untrue and it also undermines anyone that makes a breakthrough against him. Mina especially. Imagine if everyone was calling Moriarty dumb just because he failed in the end, it'd immediately be making Sherlock Holmes look way less of a genius.

Plus, making a wolf scare the owner of the house to death so he can get inside it actually worked. That is the opposite of incompetence. The only reason why they figured out that Dracula was behind this one was because Mina had the insight to search every newspaper with a date after the day Lucy's mother died, and she made the connection through finding an article about a wolf escape, and combining it with Jonathan's journal's information about Dracula controlling wolves. Van Helsing and the others in London were in the dark about there being a specific killer, without Mina's detective work. Dracula would have absolutely gotten away with it without her.

been reading Dracula lately and have been thoroughly enjoying myself, so I decided to draw some of my takes on the characters

Midway through the book I wondered how the story would be if instead of "Lucy is the warning and Mina is the one they must save", Jonathan came back a couple weeks earlier and it was "Mina reads her traumatized husband's journals and can't talk to him about it for fear of hurting his health. So she, Lucy, and one or two of Lucy's maids team up to save Lucy and fight Dracula." Idk if that sparks any drawing inspo?

I love this idea a lot.

I would like to have done more with like the maids and stuff I think it’s a really cool idea but I wanted to get the drawing done this evening and not still be working on it too late.
