If you'd like to join my Patreon print memberships, there are still a few days left in March to get one of these two: Pandora "Created for Ill" or "Stealing a Silmaril"
I've started packaging all the snail mail and airmail for this month 🖤
(and the print for next month will be another Lúthien!)

I should probably have made a pinned post ages ago, but luckily, on Tumblr, time is an endless loop.
My art is mostly in acrylics, sometimes watercolors, and I love mythology, whimsical elves, and portraits of all kinds. I’ve illustrated book covers, tabletop books (both character illustrations and maps) and of course private commissions.
Very partial to the color blue, apparently.

An earlier stage of Lúthien - the underpainting was a challenge of avoiding my usual Ultramarine Blue VS Burnt Sienna, and going for more color variety for once.

The holes go all the way through, the sides of the book are red, and on some pages the text is colored red just under the holes !

I've been painting scenes inspired by Beren & Lúthien lately. This was the first one - stealing a silmaril from Morgoth (close-up).
I shot reference pictures for all the flowy textiles by tossing a cotton fabric around in front of a lamp, filming that and taking screenshots, then compiling them into a magical cloak-woven-from-hair monstrosity that makes no actual sense.
The silmaril reference was a blue mood lamp, while the sword reference was a metal shoe horn.
I learned so much about how to make and use references in general from this!
Tumblr media
Morgoth's crown was a DIY effort, gluing strips of cardboard into something that vaguely fit my head. My goal was to make it look like it would be painful to wear, like a cage.
The actual character references were also me (for Lúthien) and my wonderful husband for Beren. At first I felt weird about that because Lúthien is supposed to be otherworldly beautiful, but then... Tolkien wrote this love story for his beloved wife and himself, so looking beyond descriptions of appearances and instead just seeing this as a painted love letter works...?
Tumblr media
I loved modeling for Morgoth, too! The crown kept falling apart, but I got to look at the camera all creepy.
“She cast her cloak before his eyes, and set upon him a dream, dark as the outer Void where once he walked alone.”
The background was created and lit in Blender so that I could get those arches right when painting them in acrylics.
Tumblr media
The hand references were... handy! (Brushes for size)
Tumblr media
The first color layer had Luthien look more haggard and angular, which I honstly quite liked, but maybe that's something for a future illustration and a different character.
Tumblr media
Her features became softer as I painted more and more...
Tumblr media
I learned so much from this, got to obsess over details, combine tight and expressive brushwork, acrylic glazing and opaque layers, and just had so much fun! I hope it shows!

I've been sharing this painting process a lot over on Patreon all month: a very self-indulgent Silmarillion scene interpretation. Lúthien and Huan defeating Sauron at Tol-in-Gaurhoth
