True fact, in that I have never found anything to contradict this:

Variant or feminine form of Laurence. Originally a masculine name, it was first popularized as a feminine name by actress Betty Jean Perske (1924-2014), who used Lauren Bacall as her stage name.

Was it even used as a feminine name before that, ever? I don’t know. Like you can see the hot minute To Have and Have Not hit theaters (1944):

So if you are named Lauren, you are essentially named after Lauren Bacall. My mom says she just liked the name (it was getting popular in the late ’70s). A lot of her friends asked if she named me after Lauren Hutton (who was the face of Revlon at the time), but no, she just thought it was a good strong girl’s name that wasn’t overused at the time.

(Going back to that masculine origin, Lauren Hutton was born… Mary Laurence Hutton.)

Oddly, it was producer/director Howard Hawks who chose “Lauren” for Lauren Bacall, and I haven’t read deep enough to have any idea why he chose (coined?) that. “I was always Betty Bacall” in real life, she said of herself.

And yet, “Lauren” started getting popular in the late-late ’70s (my mom’s best friend used it for her own baby a year later. “IT WASN’T POPULAR WHEN I GAVE IT TO YOU!!”), peaking a little before 1990. I was always kind of sad that my name didn’t have, like, centuries of history behind it, like my classmates Sarah, Anna, Melissa, Lucy, and Katherine. But it’s been kind of nice seeing the Lauren Bacall propaganda for @hotvintagepoll, getting to see that “Lauren” has at least a little bit of history, and that history looks pretty good.
