I’m native, but not American nor Lakota so I want to be respectful when I decide the name of my character. Do I need to take into account the gender of my character when deciding the name? Their age? When researching for a AU name for Rainbow Dash, the only thing I learned was that it will be impossible for me to assign a good name because I'm missing a lifetime + thousands of years of context. I recommend reaching out/working with Native folks/artists who are willing. It can be DMing someone to ask for their input/advice or making a public post asking for feedback.

Remember that you're asking someone else to do a service for you. Consultation, even on names, is a service (I think some folks have a consultation fee). Many Native artists already receive a lot of OC-help requests so be polite and listen.
