I literally felt my heart drop... I'm so devastated they have canceled Our Flag means Death... out of all the shitty shows they decided to cancel one of the few good ones...

But you know what? Nothing can change the way OFMD felt like home to me and so many others. I don't think I've ever felt a connection and love for a show like I have for OFMD.

So in the words of our beloved unicorn Izzy hands:

They may have taken away our show but they'll never take away the love we had for it or the connection we felt. OFMD was more than just a TV show for me. It was home, no matter how dumb or cliche that sounds. The show meant more than anyone could understand and I'm grateful.

So in my brain, Pete and Lucious were atleast fuck buddies well before they boarded the revenge. They seem incredibly comfortable with each other as early as episode 4. ( Also I gave no idea how time in TV shows. It's differently an ADHD thing). So yeah I like the idea of knowing them each other before. Also I feel like they boarded the revenge in groups

I started Our Flag Means Death FURIOUS and bitter. I was still high on the Always Sunny train and feeling that no other type of humor would ever compare to sunny’s humor and as I watched the pilot I was seething with anger cause I was already feeling the show wouldn’t live up to what I thought it could be. Nobody was talking about it and there were a few episodes to come out, so I hadn’t even heard of it before (my friend told me it was a Taika pirate show and we should see what was it about). My first impression of Stede was that he was gay, but that the show wouldn’t possibly go there and that I’d eventually be disappointed when it’s not the case. Secondly, Jim. The moment I saw them I thought trans, but then again, how often it is that the trope of “dressing as a guy to blend in” leads to actual trans rep? I saw all the queer allegories, the queer undertones but honestly thought the show wouldn’t deliver. It’s a silly show about pirates, a workplace comedy with a new gimmick. I thought it was fine when I finished the last episode. Maybe a week later (if I recall correctly) I went back to it, giving it another chance. With each subsequent episode, I understood the series more and more. I saw that Jim’s actor was non binary and that gave me hope that the queer undertones was actually intended and thought of.

Then of course, Blackbeard. Episode four was an eye opener. Firstly I thought “people are gonna ship the hell out of these two” (me included) but I was still skeptical. But then… The parallels with Mary and Blackbeard? I thought I was loosing my mind. But it just got gayer and gayer (Taika’s heart eyes like, they’re impossible not to notice). But it was still in my mind that it couldn’t be the case, how can a show be this unapologetically queer without being marketed as such??? I’m always on the lookout for queer stuff so I’d certainly know. Episode 5 went on and we saw Lucious and Black Pete as an item and I took that as confirmation that nothing would happen between Stede and Ed (like, come on, we got a non binary character and a gay couple, if there’s more than it’s officially for the gays) but then!!! The moonlight scene! I legit thought I was going insane thinking to myself this is the most romantic shit I’ve seen I can’t believe this is happening is it really real or am I this delusional??? I was in it now and couldn’t stop my binging the show. With each subsequent episode I got more and more sure it was really a romantic comedy and let me tell you the rush and the serotonin I felt knowing more and more that for the first time I was getting what I hoped for? Scratch that, something better than what I had hoped for.

There were only 8 episodes available and when I got to Calico Jack everything happened again. I looked at him and though “lol ed’s ex” but thought I wouldn’t be so lucky… Well think again! I was still wondering if it was all some sort of next level queerbaiting but Jack went there and said “nope, we used to fuck” (and for that I’ll be forever grateful of Will Arnett). Then obviously the feet touch aka the most romantic thing to have ever happened in fiction. The first thing I did was to look up people here on tumblr to see if everyone was consuming it with the same eyes as I and let me tell you, watching the fandom start was so cool and I’ll remember those simpler times fondly. We were all wondering what would happen, if there would be a kiss (and people still debating if it was bait or not).

The last two episodes released like a week later and I waited as patiently as I could. The kiss and subsequent break up oh I was in heaven. If there’s something I like is drama and it peaked as Mary realized Stede had come back. Ohh and episode ten hm! Delicious. Anyways after the kiss everyone and their mom knew that it was not only canonically queer but an inherently queer show, the fandom grew in unprecedented ways. I lasted like four months before I quietly got away cause big fandoms intimidate me. Too much content for me to process and way too much discourse… But I’ll be here for this season because the brainrot is real and I’m exited to see the show being even more unapologetically queer and more explicitly than ever as a love story.

I’m just really happy to have stumbled upon this show without knowing a thing and finding out in real time that it’s one of the queerest shows in existence.

I would love love love to write a really good Rogue and Gambit story. Especially since I've been getting into it again. Especially since in the comics they've been good and married for a while and I love examining couples from an angle of already gotten through the first part of love stages and are now settled. What does that look like? What does it look like when you're a superhero? What does it look like when you're a part for a long time and missing the other one? Ah, there are still ways to do angst....

And there are just so many possibilities with characters as complex as Rogue and Gambit. I've recently had a kernel of an idea -- but nothing concrete.

As an aside - there are still a half dozen Marvel stories I never did write, who knows if I'll ever get back to that again.

I should also mention, not something I'd really ever try to write, but your question reminded me that I was thinking about it and I was gonna talk to you about it. You know who my favorite couple is from Our Flag Means Death? Lucious and Black Pete. I mean Stede and Ed are great and all but - I want a whole thing with Lucious and Black Pete just trying to live their lives with all the drama of the pirate ship going on around them. :D

apparently their budget got cut in half and they made them rewrite entire storyline last minute so something was definitely going on over there

I mean, it was a super queer, super diverse show that wasn't made to appeal to white middle America, so I personally think Zaslav wanted it to tank for sure.

The budget cuts last season definitely made it harder for everyone to work together, but David also seemed genuinely super invested in Izzy so I also think there were some creative misfires. I found it very disheartening that a show featuring so many people of color and canonical, EXTREMELY definitively queer characters (yes, obviously Izzy was very much gay, but he was not the kind of representation characters like Black Pete, or Lucious, or Jim offered--extremely CLEAR, no way for any straight dude to say "I don't know maybe your'e reading into subtext :(") with an interracial love story between two middle-aged men, one of which was finally discovering himself at a later age... suddenly turned around and focused on the self-loathing, frankly homophobic white guy who spent most of season 1 terrorizing everyone else.

The "he's an asshole but he's ours" turnaround from the crew after a time jump was extremely clumsy and shoehorning him into a super popular ship (dude, Izzy waltzing in to crack dick jokes after their first time was ONE OF THE WORST THINGS I'VE EVER SEEN ON TV) was incredibly off-putting. I think that really fucked a lot of shit for them, creatively speaking.

In a world where Black Pete is still on the revenge.

A scene where Black Pete is on the back of the boat crying out to Lucious and Ed thinking that all his visions of Lucious are real and the whole crew knows about it goes to try to kill Pete and interrogate him but instead hear Pete crying thinking it’s it’s his fault that Lucious left. That he could of jumped overboard or just got off the ship or chose to stay behind and it mirrors Ed’s feelings for Stede and how he feels betrayed and he instead tells Pete he did nothing wrong- people leave- toughen up and get back to work.

Little do they know Lucious is alive and well, stowed away and appearing randomly on the ship just to fuck with Ed (and Izzy)
