Mini-review:

I love Song Weilong and I was really looking forward to seeing him in a sci-fi drama, but The Bionic Life didn't fully meet my expectations. While the show proposes a lot of interesting questions and themes, it never delves in them as deeply as it should. And it definitely doesn't help that the world-building is so half-assed. I did enjoy some of the episodic cases and the overarching mystery, mainly due to the main characters and the cast, but I wish the writing was stronger. Tbh, if it wasn't so short, I think I wouldn't have finished it.

53. 10/03/2024 night, Happy Bday Shu Rongbo and Wu Yihan!! Hehe the way Qian Anqi knocks their heads together and insisted to sing them happy birthday is so cute. Wu Yihan said 'Happy Birthday' before their customary Guiding Light hug. And pls someone translate (or at least transcribed) the closing speech for me, there's a lot of laughing involved, I'm curious. Also, have this bonus stage door clip.

Some funfacts. Since last year they play in the same 4 musicals including Link Click and out of those 4 plays they shared 2 roles. Shu Rongbo played a total of 9 roles while Wu Yihan played 7. (Yes, I am at that level of hyperfixation)

I actually think both XXC & NMJ’s storylines parallel WWX’s in some ways. All three of them end up dead—WWX’s body is ground up, NMJ’s body is dismembered, and XXC’s soul shatters, and all three have storylines that straddle the boundaries of life and death. XXC’s soul might be healed, NMJ’s body is pieced together and becomes an undead fierce corpse, and WWX comes back to life from the dead in another person’s body.

I mean, again it's possible to draw these lines as yes, you point out the similarities, but NMJ's storyline, which is usually where the parallels are meant to be, goes very differently from Xiao Xingchen and Wei Wuxian's.

Wei Wuxian and Xiao Xingchen both stand up against a great sect who has just massacred most of a smaller sect and say "No, this is unjust. This needs to stop. You are not immune to morality just because you have power," end up being pushed down for lacking the rank of the oppressor, giving up a key part of themselves to someone they care about dearly and being hurt by that person for it, retiring to a place where many would dare not go, living in peace for a time before someone comes in presumed peace and then proceeding to break them and attempt to shatter their spirit to prove that their aggressor (Jiang Cheng and Xue Yang) is the one in the right and they are wrong, before they die outright with their reputation in the mud.

Nie Mingjue on the other hand has the power to stand up against injustice and does not, choosing to blame others for not standing up first, participates in punishing the innocent for daring to share a name with a previous aggressor and holds every slight forever, he shares much more in common with Jin Guangyao, the difference between them really is that while Nie Mingjue has black and white morality, Jin Guangyao has no morality at all. And they both end up dead for the ways that they treat people with those morality levels. So while yes, deathwise Nie Mingjue seems to fit the pattern, the parallels only line up there.

As an added finisher to this discussion on parallels, I would like to note the difference in their final endings. Xiao Xingchen's soul is tattered and broken, but his friend comes back for him and A-Qing spends both the rest of her life and her death trying to get justice for him, and Wei Wuxian believes that with time and the love of his friends that he will recover eventually. And of course, Wei Wuxian is offered a new body, gets to clear his name and move forwards with the man he loves and who loves him unconditionally at his side, both of their endings are very hopeful and while it isn't perfect yet, subtle indications point to things continuing to improve for both of them as they are no longer standing alone against the dark.

Nie Mingjue and Jin Guangyao on the other hand are both sealed away in death, in the same coffin mind you, to fight each other in hatred until there is nothing left of them. Their ending is unreservedly bad and tied to each other. They lived in hatred, they killed each other with their hatred and now their death is consumed in hatred.

Applicability is not writer's intent. And parallels need to run on multiple lines before they are more than happy coincidence.
