if i can be honest here this is really one of my least favourite parts of the way the romances are written. the idea that you can only really fall in love once (and both the related ideas that, if this love is real, then every other relationship you've had must not have really been love and that, if you have been in love before, your previous love somehow cheapens the current love) is so completely juvenile. it's the kind of line of thought you'd expect to see in a young adult novel marketed exclusively to 12- to 16-year-olds for whom every emotion feels like the most intense, ultimate feeling they could ever have, and who do not yet have the life experiences to understand (or appreciate) the complexities of love. "i've only ever loved this one person this way, every other feeling i've thought was love has just been a poor imitation" is a pretty thought but is ultimately a fantasy (and one that i, personally, find incredibly disrespectful towards people who have been in love and then fall in love again).
it would be one thing if this idea was espoused by only one of the characters. if only n (just as an example) bought into the idea that only one love can be your true love, then that would say something about n's character, their romantic and life history, the way they view and interpret the world, etc. but instead all of the ros seem to follow this line of thought - they've all never been in real love before, if they and the detective broke up they'd never experience this kind of love again, they're all soulmates, etc. and in that way this idea is not a characterization choice for particular characters, but an idea perpetuated by the work as a whole. and in my (biased and personal) opinion, it's a childish and unrealistic idea.
#i have many many personal little bones to pick with wayhaven. my own hills to privately die on. and this is one of them#except i'm doing it publicly#and to be clear: there's nothing universally wrong with young adult novels for 12-16 year olds. some of them are very good#but if you know the kind of book i mean then You Know#'your vampire romance is unrealistic? fork found in kitchen' yea well this requires more suspension of disbelief than the vampirism#and is representative of an ideology that is personally repellant to me 💕#if this doesn't make sense it's because it was written quickly and barely edited. peace and love on planet post xoxo

My desire to support a Biblical sitcom done in a respectful way vs. my hatred of the mockumentary style, FIGHT!
#it's a great thing i queued that post about 'the promised land'#because it did remind me to watch it#as a mashup of exodus and the office it's pretty brilliantly done#starting it in exactly the right place to set up the 'coworkers trying to keep this thing running' format#unfortunately it matched the style so well that it reminded me of all the reasons i hate 'the office'#it managed to overcome my suspension of disbelief in a way this style usually doesn't#because of course the israelites didn't have cameras so the documentary crew sits nicely in the realm of absurdity#but everything else about the office is not my sense of humor at all#the seven seconds of awkward silence after every single joke#the deadened soundscape that sucks the very life out of your soul#the way everyone speaks with the same inflections and tone in a very narrow emotional band#and everything is so understated as to erase almost all personality#no one is clever or witty#there is no banter no frenzy no outsized personalities#just everyone existing in this narrow band of faint absurdity#and the thing is i do like these characters!#joshua is adorable!#zipporah is darling#miriam is...kind of off-putting but i'll go with it#the egyptian is a brilliant concept#the moments of earnestness made me really feel for these people#but the question is if my interest in them can overcome my distate for this style#but great news: if you love the office this will be great for you

Reading a fic that's so well written I wish I could close my eyes and just let the descriptions and atmosphere wash over me, but the dilemma with closing my eyes is, well, I then would not be able to continue reading this fic, now would I.
#fanfiction#fanfic#reading#i don't read longform fic very often but this one is so good wow i'm in awe and clicking next chapter next chapter#the movie it's for I'm not even a particular major fan of itself but I am a fan of the character and the ideas and oh my god#they perfect it to a tee in every way even better than the movie could and yet keep their characterization spot on in line with the og#it's amazing the way they balance the humour and banter with the suspense/tension and drama/horror#and their descriptions are gorgeous/pick out just the right details#their follow-up is more canonical to me as a sequel than the actual official sequel which is wrong in so many ways#and I am in love with their writing style so much my god#i'll say the fic if asked probably will honestly make a rec post for it when I'm done just because wow but here i'm just vague posting#i mean it's 10 yrs old and I've been reading fic for 8-9 yrs and it is truly one of the best I've read in all of that#from all my tags I mean you can labour a guess for the fandom or fic and if you were to guess it wow good job I'd be impressed#but anyway !!! love finding masterpieces I hope this person decided to become an author in those 10 yrs almost *sobs*#I'm gonna say the fic anyway whatever it's From Out the Ocean Risen by Bluestar god it's good (for p/acific r/im)

i think something moonage daydream was really good at doing was capturing a vibe
#sir.txt#the thing it was second best at was painting a picture... that movie is a watercolor rendition of a galaxy to me#i feel like the linear progression of bowie's life in the movie never being marked by any specific dates not even years... it gives it that#not cut and dry feeling. none of these events exist solely in one day of one year they are something that will span longer than ourselves#one day- a couple of hours- stretched into infinity simply by the fact that they were not confined within a date#i think that's something worthy of bowie. to be immortalized not through the medium itself but by how the medium refuses to cage him within#any set parameters that would be too extreme and unsatisfying for him would he be there to choose#instead letting him trespass all those barriers and just be and transcend#my boyfriend says the film is like bowies superstar cosmic journal well i say the film is like bowies watercolor rendition of a galaxy in#formation- and all the stars are still forming and the watercolor still hasn't dried as another layer is added so shades melt within-into-#each other#like how bowie refused to keep himself caged within one style one look one identity he surpassed all of those boundaries and transformed#into something else... it is only fair that the film capture it in a similar way... all of the flashy colors and editing is just a#projection of bowies spirit itself in all its vibrancy and extravagance without being supercilious#this movie was touching but also fun for the sake of fun and eccentric for the sake of eccentricity. it's a must watch for whoever loves#bowie at his most raw and unrestrained and undefined... i felt like falling through the screen to bw held by him at several moments#BECAUSE that's what the movie is it's the galaxy wrapping its arms around the unknowing astronaut#and welcoming them into itself because nobody in this reality is actually an outsider of life- nobody passively observes the universe-#that's something that i found very moving in the film was how bowie surpassed that feeling of all-encompassing loneliness that was#what propeled him to create art... and found acceptance and loving and understood he wasn't alien to all of it.#it's very moving again like i said. but specially movingfor someone like me who struggles so hard not to simply idly observe things and let#life reject me. I can't keep letting these things write themselves into existence over and over and maybe just maybe#that film helped me snap back into a higher sense of lucidity where i realise i have to take control of my life#but like. anyway.#bowies life is very mythologised but in part it is very much a self constructed myth which he himself took the time to skillfully architect#and its such that myth ceases to be only in suspension and untangible: bowie being extraterrestrial.#he.... he integrates so much into the planet he does become an energy traversing through earth. he becomes life itself but in the least self#important way this sentiment could be expressed.#there will never be another bowie- as there will never be another dylan or reed or lennon. there will never be circumstances which will come#but to quote the movie. his life hasnt ended. only changed. thats beautiful. anyways my tags are up

so obviously on a meta level beholders and beholderkin only roll for random eyebeam attacks for game balance reasons, because 'and the beholder has a disintigration beam!! watch out!!' is dangerous in a way that's fun and exciting but 'and the boholder systematically disintigrates each of you, game over' is not, but this mechanic is very funny to me in the specific context of being able to have a gazer as a familiar which is bonded with and theoretically obedient to a player character
all day long he's telekinetically pushing things off your desk over and over like an asshole cat, using fear on passing children, sniping birds out of a flock overhead with frost rays. you get into combat. you tell him to only focus on attacking with frost rays, a thing you absolutely know he is fully capable of doing, and he just simply does not. actually he's gonna go ahead and do whatever he feels like, thanks
#I also like 'gazers have 3 int and get too excitable in combat and just start firing at random'#but 'gazers are dickheads and are gonna be annoying on purpose' is funnier to me#I say this with love I love melliwyk's wretched awful gazer so much#anyway it's obviously on a different level but having to roll for player-controlled gazerbeams is also necessary for game balance#'yeah you just get a gun that shoots 3d10 twice per round for free forever' isn't exactly balanced lmao#but ALSO obviously 'beholders use disintigration and telekinesis to build their lairs--'#'--but they can't actually choose what ray they are using and they can't use any one ray twice in a row' cannot possibly be in-world true#to be honest I am Bothered by beholders because it's hard to justify in-world why they wouldn't just focus fire sometimes#but also meta-wise they Cannot and I would very much not want to change that :') but also I DO like beholders in theory#one of the bits of dnd where the dissonance between game mechanics and in-world reasonings really strain my suspension of disbelief#fortunately as a player all I have to worry about is one gazer and fortunately gazers are stupid and also dickheads 😌#my OCs#melliwyk

Can I just say that the scariest thing about a scary movie is people screaming.
Had a mini movie party and we were watching Before I Wake, and it was just me my husband and 6 friends. And it really wasn’t that scary. But every time something freaky happened they were all screaming and one specific friend was literally bouncing off my walls. She never sat down, she was always either pacing around or she was sitting like a frog so she could start running when something creepy happened. Girl ran into a door at one point, and then another time she literally bellyflopped onto the floor, and then there was quite a while before another “scary” scene, and she literally jumped so high and flopped onto me, my husband, and her fiancé and started screaming.
I was doing fine like it wasn’t that bad at all but when she was running around being a little monster because she doesn’t do very well with creepy movies, she makes everyone else freak out, and then I feel stupid for laughing at them because I’m supposed to be screaming and crying too because it’s a sad and creepy movie, but I’m not because I think it’s hilarious when they’re all screaming because of the one friend who can’t hold still.
I have to throw scary movie parties more often because I haven’t been this entertained in a long time 🤣
#no offense to the one friend#i love you with all my heart#I just think it’s very funny#before i wake#scary movies#scary#scary stuff#halloween#horror movie#horror#thriller#suspense#canker man#cancer man#everybody dies in their nightmares#nightmare

a comic about fix-it fanfics
#your life rewritten by someone who loves you#orv’s plot is literally a self insert fix it fic where KDJ make it so YJH has a happy ending#but also#the essence of orv itself is HSY denying KDJ’s own self fulfilling tragedy ripping it apart with her hands and making ridiculous demands of#the story which ends up working because hsy is a genius author and the best liar in the world#sometimes a lie becomes real because you need it to be real#a story is as real as it’s impact on you#and sometimes that impact is to make you believe that a better happier ending can exist and is realistic#and you can have it if you reach for it#even 1863 reinforces this as a timeline where HSY acted as a good writer should and killed her darlings for the sake of the ‘perfect story’#the only reason KDJ opposed her was a very childish one#‘just once isn’t he allowed to be happy?’#even if it doesn’t make sense#even if it’s not good for the story#a fix it fic is something that allows you as a reader to witness a world where that could happen#it suspends your suspension of disbelief#lies until those lies become real#it’s a miracle! the common kind of miracle that happens everywhere and all the time. it’s love babyyy

sometimes i really cannot get over how fantastic some of the layouts and the art by gene colan is sometimes his layouts get a little Too playful for good reading but god when it's good it's great. so damn good I HAVE TO GET BACK TO 70SDEVIL. but god. just fanfuckingtastic work truly i say nothing new but well i can add forever to the admiration. so stellar
#static.soundz#i think more ppl should give earlier comics a shot for if nothing else the art alone. there really is a lot of talent and skill in it.#which maybe sounds stupid to say but it really is fun to watch as already good art starts to really sophisticate itself.#as layouts get more thoughtful and creative when screentone gets further incorporated when the action gets further considered ugh. UGH!#soooo wonderful. so fun. truly one of the biggest delights of v1 reading so far has been watching this comic sophisticate itself#while still being very much playful silly comics. which sounds silly to say maybe. bc as much as i love the Serious Hero Storyline#cape comics should always remember inherently there is this big playful suspension of disbelief involved#bc these are ppl runnin around in skin tight suits with villains with silly names. but they make it work and it's fun. so fun#god i love comics!!!! i love superhero comics!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hello gamers minor life update I have been doing Real bad lately so I will likely continue to be very inactive, but hey on the bright side I have been fleshing out some eternal gales lore I reworked a while back and I can happily say that Dodie no longer completely contradicts the very nature of reality in eternal gales and the fog tower™ officially has a real reason to exist again so hell yeah to that
#rat rambles#eternal gales#oc posting#this is a piece of lore I technically updated a while ago but I mostly just relocated dodie home to a different piece of worldbuilding#but now Im fleshing things out a bit more and Im so glad that I set myself up such an easy way to jump ship on the old stuff#it also makes my life easier because it means that I have an actual reason for mase to be the first person dodie encounters in person#also an actual reason to trap him at first sorry dude it adds to the suspense#longggggg story short dodie lives in the universe's core of sorts#its where all the other characters are transported to at the beginning of the story due to other stuff#I already had it as a thing that the core attempts to replicate the casts home and food and such to help maintain them#but the fog tower™ had its core echo in place since forever basically#mostly because the narrator wanted to get dodie a home set up in the core instead of having to find a way to house her in notmal society#now the tower wasnt exactly meant to be found but it still had to be real enough to actually get echoed so it was real enough to be found#hense why mase's family lives in the lower half of it#the top half is fully reserved for setting up stuff to be echoed to dodie's tower#this is mostly handled my cup aka dodie's long distance mom figure#but most of that stuff was done before dodie was properly created and as such cup had to fight for their life to figure out how to best get#this child growing up in fucked up situations as happy and stable as they could with limited budget and time#they were also dealing with doing a lot of this behind the backs of mase's parents as the two wanted them to provide just the bare basics#despite this cup managed to sneak in a shit ton more video tapes than they were supposed to and attempted to cover as much as possible#ofc dodie still ended up incredibly unstable and fucked up anways but she still loves her long distance video mom dearly#up til she was like 12 or so those tapes were the only way she could see and hear another person#but yeah in the echoed version the lower half of the tower is mostly consumed by plantlife and the such#hense why dodie avoids the area like the plague she has hashtag issues regarding plants#oh yeah Ive also been thinking abt fydd a lot lately#I have been slowly developing a bit of a side plot for him in my head that Im not 100% sure Im going to commit to but Im mivrowaving it#basically I was thinking abt each of the human casts sort of quote unquote domains are#by that I mean the whole reason they get drawn to the universe core is because theyre all sorta connected to universe functions#fydd is one of the weird ones because his place in the system is the basic software ig would be the best way to put it?#hes connected to the very base of the system that the rest of the functions are built into

This is probably also why so many booktok/bookstagram-famous books are (imo as an avid „actual“ reader) shitty? As in ‚books written by 13 year olds on Wattpad make more sense and are written better‘-shitty.
I‘m not going bash people for liking to read or fantasise about toxic relationships, you do you. I don‘t like it, so I don‘t read it.
But I have no idea how people could stick around for an entire book of objectively bad & inconsistent writing and like it, without doing this parapgraph skipping/ only reading dialogue thing (aka not actually reading).
Do they know that reading is not mandatory? Nobody is forcing them to read?
#The horrifying alternative would be that people unironically love reading sentences like „we laughed at our son‘s big balls“#and being perfectly fine with an inconsistent ‚chonic illnes‘ (that the author also has) only popping up when it makes the mc interesting#but not when it would actually negatively affect her#Suspension of disbelif is one thing.#but for the entire premise of a book?#It also feels like most of the MCs in these books are flatter than week-old soda & have to be Very Special Princesses not by their own right#but because She‘s The Universe‘s Favourite Princess. Usually there is boting special about her skillset or ambition.#she‘s just born bettter than everyone else.#(eg getting 2 fated dragon instead of 1 like a normie‚ being turned into a fae even if that doesn‘t make sense)#And while I‘m usually against gatekeeping/ calling people ‚poser‘#this seems like a good time to gatekeep and call people poser.#especially when they‘re treating bookishness like an aestetic.

another thing fantasy writers should keep track of is how much of their worldbuilding is aesthetic-based. it's not unlike the sci-fi hardness scale, which measures how closely a story holds to known, real principles of science. The Martian is extremely hard sci-fi, with nearly every detail being grounded in realistic fact as we know it; Star Trek is extremely soft sci-fi, with a vaguely plausible "space travel and no resource scarcity" premise used as a foundation for the wildest ideas the writers' room could come up with. and much as Star Trek fuckin rules, there's nothing wrong with aesthetic-based fantasy worldbuilding!
(sidenote we're not calling this 'soft fantasy' bc there's already a hard/soft divide in fantasy: hard magic follows consistent rules, like "earthbenders can always and only bend earth", and soft magic follows vague rules that often just ~feel right~, like the Force. this frankly kinda maps, but I'm not talking about just the magic, I'm talking about the worldbuilding as a whole.
actually for the purposes of this post we're calling it grounded vs airy fantasy, bc that's succinct and sounds cool.)
a great example of grounded fantasy is Dungeon Meshi: the dungeon ecosystem is meticulously thought out, the plot is driven by the very realistic need to eat well while adventuring, the story touches on both social and psychological effects of the whole 'no one dies forever down here' situation, the list goes on. the worldbuilding wants to be engaged with on a mechanical level and it rewards that engagement.
deliberately airy fantasy is less common, because in a funny way it's much harder to do. people tend to like explanations. it takes skill to pull off "the world is this way because I said so." Narnia manages: these kids fall into a magic world through the back of a wardrobe, befriend talking beavers who drink tea, get weapons from Santa Claus, dance with Bacchus and his maenads, and sail to the edge of the world, without ever breaking suspension of disbelief. it works because every new thing that happens fits the vibes. it's all just vibes! engaging with the worldbuilding on a mechanical level wouldn't just be futile, it'd be missing the point entirely.
the reason I started off calling this aesthetic-based is that an airy story will usually lean hard on an existing aesthetic, ideally one that's widely known by the target audience. Lewis was drawing on fables, fairy tales, myths, children's stories, and the vague idea of ~medieval europe~ that is to this day our most generic fantasy setting. when a prince falls in love with a fallen star, when there are giants who welcome lost children warmly and fatten them up for the feast, it all fits because these are things we'd expect to find in this story. none of this jars against what we've already seen.
and the point of it is to be wondrous and whimsical, to set the tone for the story Lewis wants to tell. and it does a great job! the airy worldbuilding serves the purposes of the story, and it's no less elegant than Ryōko Kui's elaborately grounded dungeon. neither kind of worldbuilding is better than the other.
however.
you do have to know which one you're doing.
the whole reason I'm writing this is that I saw yet another long, entertaining post dragging GRRM for absolute filth. asoiaf is a fun one because on some axes it's pretty grounded (political fuck-around-and-find-out, rumors spread farther than fact, fastest way to lose a war is to let your people starve, etc), but on others it's entirely airy (some people have magic Just Cause, the various peoples are each based on an aesthetic/stereotype/cliché with no real thought to how they influence each other as neighbors, the super-long seasons have no effect on ecology, etc).
and again! none of this is actually bad! (well ok some of those stereotypes are quite bigoted. but other than that this isn't bad.) there's nothing wrong with the season thing being there to highlight how the nobles are focused on short-sighted wars for power instead of storing up resources for the extremely dangerous and inevitable winter, that's a nice allegory, and the looming threat of many harsh years set the narrative tone. and you can always mix and match airy and grounded worldbuilding – everyone does it, frankly it's a necessity, because sooner or later the answer to every worldbuilding question is "because the author wanted it to be that way." the only completely grounded writing is nonfiction.
the problem is when you pretend that your entirely airy worldbuilding is actually super duper grounded. like, for instance, claiming that your vibes-based depiction of Medieval Europe (Gritty Edition) is completely historical, and then never even showing anyone spinning. or sniffing dismissively at Tolkien for not detailing Aragorn's tax policy, and then never addressing how a pre-industrial grain-based agricultural society is going years without harvesting any crops. (stored grain goes bad! you can't even mouse-proof your silos, how are you going to deal with mold?) and the list goes on.
the man went up on national television and invited us to engage with his worldbuilding mechanically, and then if you actually do that, it shatters like spun sugar under the pressure. doesn't he realize that's not the part of the story that's load-bearing! he should've directed our focus to the political machinations and extensive trope deconstruction, not the handwavey bit.
point is, as a fantasy writer there will always be some amount of your worldbuilding that boils down to 'because I said so,' and there's nothing wrong with that. nor is there anything wrong with making that your whole thing – airy worldbuilding can be beautiful and inspiring. but you have to be aware of what you're doing, because if you ask your readers to engage with the worldbuilding in gritty mechanical detail, you had better have some actual mechanics to show them.
#finx rambles#worldbuilding#for writers#honestly I quite liked the asoiaf books I read#it's a well-constructed story! it's a well-constructed world too on its own merits#none of this stuff about grain and spinning is actually important to the story#the problem is that grrm himself seems to just. not realize this#and goes about blithely insisting he's created an extraordinarily realistic fantasy world where all the tax policies make sense#he has not!#he has invited people to tear his creation apart if they can and! it turns out! they absolutely can!#this shit's got no tensile strength! it's made of glue and popsicle sticks!#you're not supposed to put weight on it

I just got a new job and I’m relieved by how much I like it so far.
#positive post :D#positive personal post#I quit my last job after a big ole situation with the new manager#namely within her first week I couldn’t handle her attitude and lack of doing work#so I wrote a very long detailed message to her on all the ways she’s messed up and needs to improve#then I got suspended for a week (understandable no shade to hr for that one; only shade to the manager for being too cowardly to face me!)#then I considered coming back but the owner somehow thought a solution to this problem was ask if I wanted to work at a different location#because ‘obviously you need the money’#D:<#MAAM#I got my second to last check and quit that same day#the final day of my suspension#but within that time I’d applied to and interviewed at 2 places already#and by the time I grabbed my actual last check I’d gotten the job AND one with a pay increase#(and also better benefits and healthier work culture)#I’ve also only worked a total of 4 legit shifts plus the orientation shift#and it’s honestly telling that that’s all it took for me to fall in love#they’ve also been shortened training shifts to get me settled#and divided between 2 actual jobs: line cook and to-go#which we’ve all agreed I can do both as long as I’m comfortable#and I am!#everyone is so nice!#anyway#long story short#I’m really happy that my new job seems to be working out :)#and on top of that my boyfriend is also getting a newer better job#that way we both can have left the same toxic workplace#so yaaaaaaay

That finale's Nam-soon makes me think she's actually a long lost child of Moon and Bong...
#strong girl nam soon#she's got the craziness of em both; huh...they'll end up like Okey-Dokey's parents...Ok-hui and Yong-myeong are more like the Capn and aunt#Si-o became the lovechild of the worst that was ever dealt to KSW and Moon storywise and Do Kang-woo and Dr. K (seriously)#nah the ending landed not at all; I really don't get why not just have had the mom be the MC batwoman from the start versus dear Ppang#the story was wayyy more about them anyway to the point of neglecting a lot of what was really important (the grandmother's grew on me tho)#although I don't get how nobody gets about nam-soon nd hee-sik; they're non-toxic and mutual and on the same page#ironically most ppl objected to Moon nd Bong on the grounds it's toxic nd one-sided(and I can't figure out the writer but platonic is his#version of ScullyXMulder) but it just boils down to Hee-sik nd Moon not having a real backstory to make foil/parallel connections(?) with F#in byt at least the two do have the true gold- old school bickering chemistry...i really don't get story choices sometimes#civillians wreaking havoc with police while investigating; asking too much out suspension of disbelief; woobifieds death#putting the ML on the backburner; too many sideplots too few resolutions....#unnecessary and easily avoidable love triangles; 'love is deadly'- only Heesik escaped(kindof*) Moon went 180deg characterwise w/infatuatio#and made worst choices RSO and KSW were doomed by it#*the whole forcing the idea of tradition to have a child so young was very uncomfortable with Heesik who shouldv meet Min-hyuk nd talked
