open to: muses 25+ plot: daphne has a lead and damn it, she's gonna investigate!
Tumblr media
"look, you can either spend all night wondering about all of the cool clues i'm gonna find, or you can come investigate with me!" her arms are crossed tightly against her chest, one hand coming up to flip back the section of long, dark curls that had fallen over her shoulder. daphne raises an eyebrow, even going so far as to tap the toe of her boot against the ground. "the old factory's not even that scary. they used to like, make dog treats there or whatever— which is why i can't take shaggy or scooby." her glossy bottom lip pushes into a pout, voice bordering on a whine. "please?"

jensonbutton happy anniversary to the love of my life, the most beautiful woman in the world, the mother of my children. she's definitely too cool for me, and i take that in stride. in fact, on the day we got married, fernando asked me if i still wanted to go through with the wedding, and that i should tie you down before you realized you could have literally any man in the world. needless to say, it felt surreal that you chose me. we've spent fourteen beautiful years together, and i can't wait for fourteen more.
i love you, y/n.

My take on an “adult” Scooby-Doo
Since everyone else is doing it and I believe in dealing with anger creatively and positively, here’s my take on it....
I would like to clear the air from now that nobody is paired with anyone romantically in the classic Mystery Inc. gang. I think they’re all just fine as friends and honestly, I find that progressive within itself. Plus, no one is “bent”. Everyone looks and acts the same as they always have. They’re just adults now.
Fred Jones
He is happily married to his wife Susan who is a lawyer while he is a stay-at-home dad to three cute little daughters. He is also a fitness influencer and life coach through his videos and forums. He caters to families who are trying to squeeze in exercise and fitness tips into their modern busy lives as well as encourages their kids to get out more and get moving. He is the mentor of his eldest daughter April, up and coming would-be-leader of what will be the future Mystery Inc. gang. Like him, April is confident and a born leader though she also has an interest in cheerleading, gymnastics and photography.
Daphne Blake
She is happily single while bringing up her two cats. She is still as fabulous as ever and is a well-known reporter. Her specialty is interviewing high profile people, bringing attention to important events and above else, being honest and only presenting the facts. She does not believe in sensationalism, dragging people through the mud or infotainment. She is a mentor to her niece Lindsay Blake who is also independent and outspoken, but her interests diverge a little as she is into comics and gaming.
Velma Dinkley
She is happily married to her wife Lisa Martin who is a writer while she is now the principal of Crystal Cove High. She is fair, kind, but strict and no nonsense when it comes to running the school. Even as an adult, she is a bookish brainiac though doesn’t stop anyone from respecting her. She still loves a good mystery hence why she acts as a mentor to Michael Stone who is also a brainiac with a strong love for mysteries, books and science as well as music.
Norville “Shaggy” Rogers
He is the proud owner of the Scooby-Snack Truck which is popular among the students. He loves making people happy through his cooking especially the students at the high school he once went to. Scooby works together with him as his mascot and partner. Shaggy is the mentor of Abdul “Buddy” Ahmed who has big dreams of becoming a big chef himself someday and admires Shaggy a lot. Like his mentor, Buddy loves food and is best buds with a canine who as fate would have it, is Scrappy-Doo Scooby’s nephew. Unlike Scrappy though, Buddy is not brave and is the voice of caution between the two of them.
Scooby-Doo
As mentioned before, he runs the Scooby-Snack Truck with Shaggy as both the mascot and partner. He draws in the customers by making them smile and laugh with his antics. While his mystery hunting days are behind him, he still acts as a mentor to his now adolescent nephew Scrappy-Doo who is now hunting mysteries of his own with his own gang. While Scooby was kind of skittish and nervous, Scrappy has the opposite problem of being too fearless for his own good and is constantly underestimating the danger he gets himself in, but his uncle Scooby is teaching him to look before he leaps.

Continuing the series on actors within the horror genre who have written books is this next entry on those who have ventured into cooking. Among this group of actors-turned-authors who have shared their passion for cooking is horror-film icon Vincent Price, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, aka, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Machete star Danny Trejo. VINCENT PRICE Starting this list is horror icon, Vincent Price, who starred in many horror classics including House on Haunted Hill, The Fly, Witchfinders General, The Abominable Dr. Phibes and The Last Man on Earth. Besides his prolific work as an actor, Mr. Price was also a connoisseur of fine art and gourmet dining. Mr. Price was also a prolific writer as well, a few of which were cookbooks. Mr. Price's first cookbook was A Treasury of Great Recipes, followed by Come Into the Kitchen, and Cooking Price-Wise. All of them showcase Mr. Price's favorite recipes that he compiled with his wife and daughter, who also shared a love of good food. The featured video below shows one of Mr. Price's favorite dishes that he loves to serve to both family and guests.   SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR Sarah Michelle Gellar is best known for her role as the titular character in Joss Whedon's television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which was itself a remake of the 1992 movie starring Kristy Swanson. Besides her popular portrayal of the vampire-slaying Buffy Summers, Sarah has also played the villainous Kathryn Merteuill in Cruel Intentions and Daphne Blake in the live-action Scooby-Doo movie. It was in the latter that she starred alongside her future husband, Freddie Prinze, Jr. Besides acting, Mrs. Gellar has shown both a passion and talent for cooking. In her book Stirring Up Fun with Food Sarah has compiled several recipes that she created for her kids to inspire both a healthy love of cooking, as well as an appreciation for eating healthy, for all children. In the video below Sarah shares 3 simple recipes for creating healthy snacks.   DANNY TREJO  Finally, on our list of actors who have written cookbooks is Danny Trejo, nicknamed "The Mexican Charles Bronson." Senor Trejo has starred in such films as Machete/Machete Kills, Predators, Rob Zombies Halloween, and Dead in Tombstone to name but a few of his many films. Besides starring in many popular action and horror films, Danny has written books as well. Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood details his journey from being on the wrong side of the law, to his lucky break in the movies, and how he has used his unique experience to help others who likewise needed a second chance.  In Trejo's Tacos: Recipes and Stories from L.A. , Danny speaks of something else he's passionate about: food. Trejo's Taco's features some of the actor's favorite recipes taken directly from the restaurant chain he owns in Los Angeles. The video below shows a few examples of the kind of recipes that you can find in his cookbook. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6owykbJ2htw That's it for now. May everyone have a blessed Christmas and a happy New Year! Oh...and Bone Appetite!

I'd like to learn more about your SDMI Aus, they sound very interesting. Specifically the Time travel AU.
0_0 Ohhhh, boy, of all the questions to ask about my love of SDMI, those AUs are some of the most detailed. Strap in. The Time Travel AU: You know that narration the Nova Annunaki gave us just before everything really went to hell, showcasing all the Children of Nibiru leading up to our disaster babies? The Time Travel AU started because I had this very weird idea of a group nearly identical to that, but working under the guidance and jurisdiction of the Annunaki. Who did not care about a treasure or a curse or anything that complicated--they just wanted to FIX THINGS. Then I thought to myself, "But I also hate what happened to the Gang's parents," and an image of the parents I actually like superimposed itself onto my brain. They're no good at being noble, but I figured if the reasonable ones had a little help, it would be nice (delightful) to explore. Because Jones came off as actually pleasant, but no-nonsense in post-Nibiru, I decided to give him every unpleasant thing I could think of and let him actually work his way into a more fitting redemption arc. Give him anxiety, give him a guilt-complex, give him not-quite DID with The Freak hanging around in the back of his mind; but also make him actually put some effort into his job, and reign in Bronson's idiocy, and recruit Janet as an aid before slowly easing her into taking his place as Mayor--because, I also decided to have The Entity get pissy and super-ultra curse him for his defiance. He wants to turn his back on over twenty years of haunting Crystal Cove? Fine, in that case he can keep his speed and his strength, but also can't leave the city limits or experience extreme emotions without getting horribly sick. Angie gets a pass on anything too bad, because I hc that the talisman around her neck actually served a purpose and she's probably the most put-together person in this group--despite keeping her knowledge of the unknown and the future away from her husband, because she figures she can shoulder that burden. No, I decided to make Angie lose her fucking mind as she finally paid attention to just what the hell Velma was doing in her "relationship" with Shaggy and drive herself up the walls trying to deter negative fallout and broaden her daughter's horizons when Angie wasn't helping to save the world. The Blake parents did and didn't need as much of an overhaul as I thought they would, just a little blunting of their sharper edges and some deep diving into backgrounds that there is no fucking way the canon was going to give us. Nan Blake has a host of mental health issues going on in the background that get laughed off as dark humor? Not here. Here she gets to be a little bit like every other Stephen King protagonist/antagonist with dormant psychic abilities from her house being built over the Entity's tomb and living in the Cove her whole life. Haven't decided if she can merely feel or see when a choice their group makes can lead to real ripples of change, or if I should give her something like that thing Mina Harker had when Dracula had a go at her. Barty Blake was the one I had to sit and contemplate on the most, because he both reminds me of Fred and Brad, but also like those movie stars from the '50s that could have been from another planet for all they acted like human beings. So, I gave him foreign heritage, a Trans-Atlantic accent, his last name coming from his wife, ties to royalty and the ability to actually use a sword if he has to; all from his sometimes forgetting words in canon and Daphne's dislike for the Swedish family that owned that graveyard reminding me of that weird thing between the Danes and the Swedes. The Annunaki possessing Nova is their emotional support alien-eldritch god and also kinda doubles as Miss Exposition and a pseudo-service animal to Jones having a bad time. None of them fall specifically into the roles previous groups filled in their inter-personal relationships or that whole element thing, because, again, for them it isn't about solving mysteries, it's about keeping their kids--and the world as an
afterthought--safe. Jones isn't a coward and could kick everyone's ass; Angie's knowledge is strictly focused on the occult and people as they are; Nan is vain and air-headed and could also kick ass, but needs someone constantly there to remind her to stay in the moment; Barty is very goal oriented, but unless something ties directly back to his family, it's only a passing concern for him; and Annunaki-Nova is the one that has help these idiots save the world while experiencing things from the perspective of a dog that can fit in a handbag. Then of course I'm working on a No Mask/Alternate Dimension/Not Everyone Dies AU. A Star Wars AU. Episode Tag-Canon Divergence AUs. Honestly, I have so many.

hwevent12 plotting call!
hello, this is my plotting call for the event! under the cut you will find my muses divided up into two sections, who is still in dc and who has been taken to the island!
give this post a like and I’ll shoot you a message about some plotting!
you can find my starter call here!
Characters still in DC
agatha harkness
you think that she’s gonna help anyone?? absolutely not, this bitch will be out here looking out for herself and will be finding somewhere up high where she can look out of a window and cause some chaos for people on the streets.
annie james
listen, annie isn’t really a fighter, but she’ll square up to a monster if she sees it getting someone, but other than that, she’ll be finding somewhere to hide and helping other people find safe places.
ben solo
ben is internally screaming at the fact there’s stormtroopers here and just like with cal, it’s on sight djdkdk. but other than that he’ll be out looking for any of his family and be helping other people who need help fighting off anything that’s around.
cal kestis
cal will 100% be on edge after seeing stormtroopers and will be yeeting every single one that he sees, it’s on sight besties. he and bd1 will be doing whatever they can to help people so that they can get away from whatever is around the city. he has his lightsaber, so he’ll be cutting through some monsters.
ewan mckinnon
ewan will be using his bar as somewhat of a safe house for people to come and get away from whatever is out there, he’ll be barricading the windows and then going out to yeet some monsters to protect people.
harry potter
harry is having a crisis at seeing fucking dementors in the city and will be having a mid life crisis at 21. but other than him having a crisis, he’ll be looking out for others and making sure that any dementors get yeeted.
jeyne poole
jeyne is not doing too good with all of this?? she will most likely be hiding wherever she can bc she’s not a fighter, she knows how to somewhat defend herself, but she’s not capable of fighting off monsters.
lin beifong
listen, lin is just tired - she thought she was away from stuff like this - but now she’s straight back into it all and is permanently sighing. she’ll mostly be protecting others while also protecting the idiot of an avatar named korra.
mai
mai is quite unbothered by all of this stuff?? she’ll mostly be finding somewhere to stay safe and possibly throwing her knives at shit, but she won’t be putting herself into any immediate danger unless it’s for a friend.
mary macdonald
mary is absolutely not having a good time at all, seeing dementors here is really frightening to her and she’s worrying about finding her frinds - but she’ll help anyone who needs help and will be kicking monster butt.
phoebe halliwell
while she doesn’t have the book of shadows or the power of three here to cast any spells, there are certain exploding spells she knows works without any ingredients and will be kicking ass to protect people from any monsters.
princess yue
Yue is not one for conflict, so she’ll most likely be hiding somewhere - will bonk a monster over the head with something if needs be, but will mostly be helping people get to safety - she will be very scared because this will remind her when her home was attacked by the fire nation.
raya
Listen, raya has had enough of monsters, so she’ll be swinging her sword at anything she sees and will be helping get people to safe places.
robb stark
robb will be protecting his wife and making sure that she’s safe, all while making sure the other people in dc are safe and that they have safe places to go to get away from things.
sarra palpatine
sarra isn’t doing too good ?? she’s never experienced anything like this before, so she’s really scared - but she’ll be doing whatever she can to make sure people are safe and to find her children, yes even sheev, to make sure they’re safe.
wedge antilles
wedge will be doing whatever he can to fight off anything coming for him or anyone else and he will be making sure that people get into safe places if they can’t protect themselves.
wrecker
listen, wrecker loves nothing more than to fight, so he will be taking any monsters that come at him head on. Will also be keeping his favourite people safe bc they like to get into trouble omega, he’s looking at you bestie. But you’ll catch him run head first towards a monster and will be taking down whatever he can.
Characters stuck on the island
allison hargreeves
allison will be doing everything she can to make sure that people are safe, the old hero complex will be coming back in full force to make sure that people are safe, all while looking for her family.
anakin skywalker
Listen, this mans stress levels are at new heights - the last time he was on an island he turned to the darkside bc of the brothers influence, but y'know, just foreshadowing for what was to come, but. Mans isn’t doing too well, but he’ll be doing whatever he can to help people and keep any of his family on the island safe.
ariel triton
ariel has mixed feelings about the island, she’ll be helping people get to safe places and will also be curious about exploring and being so near the sea again.
brienne of tarth
brienne will be helping whoever she can and will be making sure that there’s some form of shelter from the elements. will also be looking for her idiot with the golden hand.
daphne blake
not having a good time at all ?? despite loving to solve mysteries and loving islands, she’s not having a good time on this island - but will be helping people where she can.
dimitry
he survived on the streets for years, so he’s pretty much adept at surviving anything by now tbh ?? he will be helping people get to safe places and finding a place for himself.
grogu
not quite sure what’s happening, but also knows that that he’s in a completely new place. will most likely find somewhere to crawl into and hide to stay away from everything.
kanan jarrus
mans is going through it, all he wants to do is get back to hera and jacen to make sure his family is safe - but other than that, he’ll help whoever he can while avoiding shit on the island.
kirei monsula
ngl kirei will be really scared, being uprooted from the place she’s started to call home and away from her mom will be really bad for her abandonment issues and will mostly be finding somewhere safe to hide.
lucy weasley
listen, she thinks this island is the best thing ever and will be laying on the beach. that is until shit starts to happen and then she’ll be freaking tf out.
natasha romanoff
natasha will be doing what she can to protect people and make sure there are safe places around the island that people can go to so they can escape what the island throws at them.
niye
Niye has always helped others, so that’s what she’ll be doing on the island and will be making sure that people get to safety, even if it means she doesn’t.
tauriel
tauriel will be finding a fucking tree to hide in, nah jk, she’ll be helping people get to safety all while keeping an eye on her idiot and making sure he’s safe.
winter celchu
winter is not having a good time, she’s away from her family on an island that she was magically transported to. but she’s going to do whatever she can to protect others.

Note
Do you think shaggy and daphne ever settle down from the mystery solving?
What like during the Scrappy era where they mainly travel around to give investigative reporter Daphne some juicy materiel? Absolutely.
Shag and Daph’s burn-out threshold is a lot smaller than Fred or Velma’s (seriously those two are gonna solve mysteries till the end of time) so I’m certain they’d step down eventually. Sure, Daphne is ambitious and loves her job but she doesn’t love her job the way Fred might love his. She’s all about experiences and testing her own limits so long as it doesn’t involve breaking a nail. Of course Shaggy would probably be willing to follow her to the moon and back to support her but he’d also start getting gray hair by 23 if they kept that up.
I feel like they would just be having a huge breakfast (prepared by her man obviously) in their hotel room of the week and she would just casually say, “Babe these pancakes with literally every topping known to man on them are stellar - by the way this is my last official article before I step down.” Shag would choke on his orange juice and be like, “Because you got an even better job right?” Because that’s the only way he can see her quitting this job. She probably just shrugs because she’s Daphne Blake and she can work something out. “I just think it’s about time I married you.” He’d cough up more orange juice. (Yes in every iteration of Shaphne I see her proposing because Daphne goes after what she wants.)
I feel like they’d move back to Coolsville because that’s where all the history is for the two of them. Plus family but that’s whatever.
Of course then they’d also need to return to a sense of normalcy which they have never really experienced before so that basically means they’re starting fresh. And they will be the first to tell you that paying a hotel bill is nothing (especially when they started sharing a bed) compared to applying for house loans and figuring what mortgage even is. Perks of moving back to the town your parents live in include them helping their kids learn how buy houses and stuff. They get a fixer-upper because now they’re both unemployed and living off of wedding presents. On one hand, you have the ride or die rich girl who has never learned how to make basic house repairs in her life. On the other hand you have a cautious guy who knows his way around a toolbox fairly well but doesn’t have the confidence in himself to think he’ll do it right. So the only “home improvement” they’ve done is circle stuff in furniture catalogs.
It’s only when they lose hot water does Shag finally snap and call up Fred to help him and Daph fix up their house for a bit. Fred is there scary fast considering he was probably out of state but he will stop at nothing to help his besties. Him and Shag get the hot water running again and (after many tears shed) they fix up the rest of the plumbing situations by like 1 in the morning. The next day Daphne drags them around Home Depot and her and Fred have the time of their lives picking out appliances and flooring and all the other essentials. Shag doesn’t have any sort of opinion so long as Scooby gets a decent sized dog house as well as a bed for whenever he feels like being an inside dog. Their house looks ship-shape in a little over a week and Daphne claims that this regular married couple thing isn’t so hard. And then they face job interviews.
I could see Daphne writing for a local fashion catalog because nobody is more up to date with fashion trends in Coolsville than her. She works it with a bunch of older ladies who just absolutely adore her. Shaggy is a wild card so it’s safe to say he jumps all over the place career wise. He’d ultimately settle on either working at a pet store or being a cook for the only vegetarian restaurant in the whole town. His coworkers always look forward to seeing his wife with the sharp looks and the even sharper tongue. They slowly nestle their way into the town, Daph might join the HOA and Shag will help out with any school fundraiser that requires cooking. It’s a long process (one to two years at least) but they rule that it was worth it.
Of course they welcome the occasional mystery dragging them out of their comfortable life.

upon waking up on valentine’s day morning, many residents will be excited to find a glass vase ( or perhaps, even, more than one ) left outside the door to their room containing freshly cut, fully bloomed red roses. miraculously, it seems like not a single one has a thorn on its stem.  some of these flowers come attached with a note and name, while other senders have chosen for the thrill of remaining anonymous. the arrangement would look beautiful on your kitchen counter, don’t you agree?
did you get one? keep reading to find out...

Thrillerathon TBR February 2020
Tumblr media
I can’t believe that Thrillerathon is almost here again but I’m SO excited for this round. Thrillerathon is a thriller and spooky-focused readathon hosted by BookTubers Harriet Rosie and Emma at Drinking By My Shelf. They’ll be running reading sprints and other Thrillerathon related activities during the week on the readathon’s official Twitter page, so check that out to join in the fun!
I tend to zoom through thrillers and spooky reads, so I’ve been overly ambitious with my TBR. Cue heavy sighs and head shakes from those who know that I do this regularly and almost never reach my near impossible goals. However, the Netflix list and other tempting new releases will be put on hold, as I make a concentrated effort to blast through the nine books I’ve chosen between 15th and 23rd February.
Yes, it’s a lot and no, you don’t need to have that many on your own TBR but you’ll know by now that I love to push myself (*internal screaming*). Let me know what you pick for your own list and without further pre-amble, here is mine! -Love, Alex x
OLDEST THRILLER ON MY TBR: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
Tumblr media
Published in 1938, this Gothic thriller has been on my bookshelf for years. As far as I know, it’s about a woman who marries a wealthy man and finds that both he and his household are haunted by the memory of his first wife. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it from sources I really trust, so I can’t wait to finally dive in.
THRILLER WITH THE CREEPIEST COVER: The Hoarder by Jess Kidd
Tumblr media
The more you look at this cover, the more you notice and the more disturbing it becomes. I’ve been interested in Jess Kidd’s work for a while and although this is her second novel, this is the one I’m starting with. It follows Maud, a troubled, lonely carer, her eccentric charge Mr Flood and a long-buried family secret that threatens to rear its head. Full of oddity and maybe even a bit of comedy, I can’t wait for this one.
SHORTEST THRILLER ON MY TBR: The Honjin Murders by Seishi Yokomizo
Tumblr media
I am delighted that this Japanese classic has finally been translated into English after originally being published in 1973. On the night of a grand wedding, a brutal murder occurs and the entire village of Okamura is shaken up, leaving amateur detective Kosuke Kindaichi to find out what happened. The Kindle edition is only 192 pages, so I’m hoping to tear through this one!
A NEW TO ME AUTHOR: In The Woods by Tana French
Tumblr media
This was recently dramatised by the BBC (The Dublin Murders) and I deliberately didn’t watch it because I knew I had a copy of this. I believe this is Tana French’s debut novel and I have high hopes for it, as it led to her becoming a very well-established name within the crime genre. Spanning two time periods and two very similar cases of missing and murdered children, two detectives piece together the evidence and make some connections that hit very close to home.
A TROPE I LOVE: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
Tumblr media
I’m not sure whether you can call ‘schoolyard scandal’ a trope but I’ve always been drawn to dramas that take place in and around a school or college environment. There’s something about the familiar setting being slightly offset by secret truths that I find incredibly addictive. Dark and suspenseful, Big Little Lies explores both the public and private lives of three women who meet at the school gates. That’s all I want to know before inevitably becoming obsessed.
A RECOMMENDED THRILLER: A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder by Holly Jackson
Tumblr media
Due to my not exactly secret true crime obsession, I’ve been recommended this YA thriller so many times by multiple people. When a teenage girl decides to investigate an apparently solved murder, she begins uncovering some secrets that someone has successfully hidden for years. I’m really excited to finally get to it and see what all the fuss is about.
NEWEST THRILLER ON MY TBR: Grace Is Gone by Emily Elgar
Tumblr media
When a beloved mother is violently murdered and her sick daughter is missing, a small English town is rocked. It’s up to a disgraced journalist and the woman who found the body to uncover the dark truth. With striking resemblances to the Gypsy Rose/Dee Dee Blanchard case (one of the most disturbing true crimes I’ve ever come across), I’m highly anticipating it. This upcoming mystery comes out on 20th February and I was recently accepted for it on NetGalley. So I’ll be fully reviewing it immediately -watch this space!
AN AUTHOR I’VE READ BEFORE: Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin
Tumblr media
I read Ira Levin’s The Stepford Wives for the previous round of Thrillerathon and this one has been staring at me ever since. Rosemary’s Baby follows a young couple who move to a new area and unknowingly garner the intense interest of their neighbours and their friends. I know that the film adaptation is considered a horror classic so I can’t wait to watch it after reading this!
THE GROUP BOOK: Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
Tumblr media
I bought a copy of this sci-fi thriller a long time ago and although I was hugely intrigued by it, I never got round to reading it. So I’d like to thank Harriet and Emma for finally giving me an excuse to! Dark Matter is the story of a man who wakes up in a lab to discover that the life he led before has gone. His house, wife and son no longer exist and someone is hunting him. It’s exactly the kind of mind-bending weirdness that I love, so I’m really looking forward to picking it up.
So those are the books that I’m hoping to get through next week -let’s see how well I do! What pulse-racing, creepy reads are you going to be reading for this round of Thrillerathon?

I think one of the most wildest meta/headcanons/theories I've ever come up with so far about Scooby-Doo is that in Mystery Incorporated, the circumstances of Fred's birth must have looked really interesting to everyone outside of Mayor Jones and Brad and Judy.
In "All Fear the Freak", we learn that Mayor Jones was a college student (and, according to Tony Cervone, he was a college instructor for a couple of years, shortly after graduating) when he first came to Crystal Cove, so the earliest age he could be is 18-ish. At some point during this time, he meets the original Mystery Incorporated, and things go from there.
Now, let's remember what has been said about Fred's "mom" in "A Haunting In Crystal Cove". When Scooby sees the picture of Fred's mom, Shaggy and Fred say that she's “Fred's mom”, who "left" when Fred was a baby.
But it was never outright stated that she was ever Mayor Jones's wife, and she "left" and characters act like maybe she'll come back and/or she's worthy of being remembered, as opposed to having already accepted that she's not coming back and being bitter about it. Arguably, there was never a circumstance in the show where they could say she was "Mayor Jones's (ex-)wife" without making it sound weird; usually, if you're talking about your friend's absent mom or dad, you call them that as opposed to their present mom or dad's spouse.
Later in the episode, Fred says that he's into making traps because he wants the people he loves to stay with him and not leave like his mom did. Now, traps are made to catch things before they can flee. While yes, Fred does use traps a few times outside of that purpose (like dragging Daphne into an investigation while she was sleeping), you could interpret this as Fred's mom leaving Fred with Jones because she was afraid of being a parent.
See where I'm going with this?
Mystery Incorporated has fun poking at teen genre tropes, particularly the ones of teens and young adults, uh, going through hormonal stuff and having no idea what they're doing and facing the consequences for that.
So... what I'm saying is that the general public thought that Fred was conceived from pre-marital... relations.
Jones has not been seen hanging around this apparent lady friend for the past nine months. Unless he claimed that it was information he kept to himself (which is possible, since he's been shown to be a private individual, keeping secrets and all), it looks like Fred was born from a brief fling, maybe even a one-night stand.
(Also, I'm gonna say as a note that Jones probably forged Fred's birth certificate and everything and said that the ex dropped the documents off with him. There's also some suspension of disbelief I'll have to ask you to do, since this is still a cartoon and a fictional story.
Additionally, I doubt that Mayor Jones would have forged a marriage certificate and divorce papers, because then he'd have to forge a whole ton of other documents (perhaps even photos, which is probably beyond his ability) and proof that it happened, maybe even create a documents for a fake adult person. It's too time-consuming and he could easily screw up somewhere, allowing someone to catch on. It’d be easier and quicker to say that Fred was, uh, an accident, and that the mother is “gone”, whereabouts unknown. That way, the dead ends will discourage anyone that’s nosy enough to try looking into it, like Fred, who, like any other kid, would inevitably ask “Where’s my mom?”.
Going off of that, she’d probably also fall under the definition of being a deadbeat mom, since there’s no proof (that Mayor Jones had forged) that she pays for child support either.)
It would also contribute to Fred's issues with his "father", because his father never intended to have children as Fred was an accident, and that's why he sucks at parenting and he never quite went through the process of maturing into a better parent either.
I have no idea how this would have affected his reputation for his college instructing and his mayoral campaign - he probably wouldn’t have gotten under scrutiny because it might not have been a big deal, but given that the people of Crystal Cove are shown to be rather apathetic, it's possible that most people didn't really care and voted him in either way.
But, I think it's also part of why the Blakes don't like the Jones (I say part, because there's more obvious reasons that I'll maybe address at some point, but not another time). They don't like Fred, because they think he's stupid. In "All Fear the Freak", when Fred and Daphne announce their engagement, Mrs. Blake blames Mayor Jones for "this". If he had properly parented Fred, none of this would be happening. But... maybe there's also some background to that.
As far as the Blakes see it, history is repeating itself. A young couple is making a rash life-changing decision based on love and emotion. And while their daughter may have some terrible judgment, it's less of her fault and more of her man's fault. Their daughter's lover is a boy who is the RESULT of this kind of love story ending badly — he got his foolishness from his father, and meanwhile, his mother ran off and severed connection with them because she regrets the whole thing.
Even if Jones was already mayor by then (I’m pretty sure you can’t be mayor for that many consecutive years, or it’s at least difficult to do, but maybe I’m wrong and there’s also some cartoon logic on the side.), it’d still look kinda weird that some girl he knocked up a few months ago in some fling dumped their kid on him. So that point still stands.
But I guess in the end, it didn’t really matter that much. Fred finds his real parents, the universe is reset to him having never been kidnapped, and none of this happens. It’s still pretty crazy, though. And maybe I’m just overthinking this.
tl;dr: The public thinks Fred was illegitimate, it was evidence that Fred's parents are terrible parents because one sucks at parenting and the other is a deadbeat, the Blakes think that Fred is dumb because his parents suck and he's gonna repeat history with their youngest daughter, Mayor Jones probably figured “I accidentally had Fred with a girl I liked for a while and she dumped our son on me.” is a better and easier cover story in case someone sticks their nose in places they shouldn’t.

Why Read Scooby Apocalypse?
Hello! As I’m sure many of my followers know, I read and VERY much enjoy Scooby Apocalypse, an extremely unpopular piece of Scooby-Doo media released by DC Comics in May of 2016. Most Scooby-Doo fans either despise Scooby Apocalypse, or simply ignore it’s existence all together. But, if you gave it a chance, you might realize that Scooby-Apocalypse is exactly what Scooby fans need.
Many fans are against the modern (or near future, technically) take on the plot and characters. With Shaggy portrayed as a buddhist hipster, Velma as an emotionally deprived, socially inept super-genius, Daphne as a badass and Fred as a blundering idiot, it’s easy to understand why most people would initially turn up their nose at Scooby-Apocalypse. However, once you start reading, you fall in love with these adapted characters all over again, and start to see their classic trademark personalities shine through.
Scooby Apocalypse focuses primarily on Dr. Velma Dinkley and Shaggy Rogers, a scientist and dog trainer who were employed at a secret facility known as The Complex. The Complex worked under the cover of a government instillation that genetically and robotically altered canines to become government war machines. It was here that Shaggy meets bionic SmartDog Scooby-Doo, and the two become best friends. The true purpose of the Complex, however, is even crazier. Dr. Velma Dinkley, along with a group known simply as The Four, were building and releasing nanites that could alter human behavior, alleviating the instinctinc to express anger or violence. However, Velma soon learns that The Four have altered these nanites to do something much more sinister when activated. After learning this, she contacts the host of Daphne Blake’s Mysterious Mysteries and her one man crew Fred Jones to report on the inner workings of the Complex and shut down the sinister operation forever. However, while touring the Complex, the nanites are accidentally activating, and nearly everyone in the world (save for Velma, Shaggy, Fred, and Daphne) are transformed into hideous and violent monsters. Now, the gang travels across America in a decked out vehicle designed by the Complex called The Mystery Machine (named after its enigmatic nature) searching for any hope of survival.
So, that’s the basis of Scooby Apocalypse. But why will you love it?
For starters, the writers are constantly dropping easter eggs from earlier installments of the Scooby-Doo franchise, such as Daphne and Fred having a TV show, Shaggy being a Vegetarian, and many other small hints and references. Paired with the gang’s new looks and obsession with references to classic film and literature, you get the perfect combination of old and new.
Speaking of which, the dialogue between the gang is hillarious. They’re constantly taking digs at each other and saying one liners that have brought me to tears. Despite this, the powerful relationships between the gang are easily the highlight of Scooby Apocalypse. Secretive Velma and the distrusting Daphne quickly fall into a love-hate relationship. On the outside, they despise each other, because Daphne blames Velma for ending the world, and the two will often go as far as to fight or cause each other physical harm to alleviate stress and anxiety. Underneath it all, Velma and Daphne really love and care for each other, and take comfort in knowing that they can take out anger on the other and still be friends afterwords. Another interesting relationship is Fred and Daphne, who have been best friends since college, despite Fred being in love with Daphne. They hooked up once a long time ago, but Daphne quickly broke things off. Despite this, nobody knows Daphne better than Fred, and he’s devoted his life to sticking by Daphne’s side, and proposing to her at least once a week. My personal favorite relationship in the series is Shaggy and Velma. The two knew each other briefly a work acquaintances, but we quickly begging to realize that Velma harbors feelings for Shaggy. They become each others closest confidants, and do just about everything together- even as Shaggy falls for someone else!
The side characters in Scooby Apocalypse are another one of the highlights. You either love to hate them, or hate to love them. Most prominent is Daisy Dinkley (ex-wife of Velma’s brother), who plays the role of damsel in distress now that Daphne has been transformed into a badass. She joins the gang in their travels, and serves as added tension for the group as some of them grow to love her, and others begin to despise her. Cliffy is a bratty young kid who lost an arm in a monster attack, and gets pseudo-adopted by Daisy. But the best side character is Scrappy, another one of the Complex’s SmartDogs, who has grown into a gigantic, buff, humanoid dog who serves as an anti-hero, who sometimes tries to kill the gang and other times saves their lives.
CAUTION: MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD.
Many Scooby-Doo fans have heard about the death of Fred Jones, and this is why most of them don’t want to read Scooby Apocalypse. However, Fred’s death was arguably one of the best writing choices in Scooby Apocalypse. Not only does it rid the story of a flat character who was pretty poorly written, it gives him so much more meaning, as grief over his death adds SO MUCH to the story and everyone’s separate character journey. Also, it adds so much more terror to the story as we realize that writers aren’t afraid of killing off main characters and truly no one is safe.
In conclusion, Scooby Apocalypse is a really fun and creative take on the Scooby-Doo characters, and puts them in a setting of drama, angst, humor, and peril. It’s like a really well written fan fiction.

Unfinished Work #6
So, long story short, me and my mom were joking about the Scooby Doo gang being weed sellers back in the day a couple months back, and I ended up writing a portion of a thing for it, and I still appreciate it.
It’s a shame it never got finished. I was planning of cameoing Flim-Flam and explaining how they got traveling and all that shiz.
Never thought of a name or summary for this, lol
Norville comes to school on the first day of kindergarten in baggy pants and a faded shirt, and continues to wear such clothes every day of every year since. His movements are scattered and disorganized; hair messy, eyes listless. He quickly receives the nickname Shaggy.
Shaggy's parents are hardly ever in the picture- never for any concerts, or parent-teacher conferences, or even just to pick him up after school- but the boy never minds. He swears they're trying, just busy, but no one ever really believes him.
He brings his puppy to school every day. Scooby is easily spooked but friendly, always either in his arms or pressed protectively against his desk. They both eat almost constantly, like they're starving, but they never gain any weight.
"My ma says I got the munchies," he tells his first friend, Fred Jones. "Whatever that means."
Velma Dinkley trips into the picture a few weeks later at the library. The little girl loves to learn, loves mysteries, so when she turns the corner into the crime aisle she doesn't notice Shaggy Rodgers sitting on the floor with his dog, Scooby, until she's sprawled out next to them.
"How'd you get a dog in here?" she asks, adjusting her spectacles, once Velma has regained herself. "It's against the rules."
Shaggy laughs and pets Scooby's scruff. "Scoob's magic, man. Nothing can stop him."
"Yeah," the dog seems to say, "magic."
"You won't tell, will you?"
Velma reluctantly shakes her head. "It's not right to have somebody take away your book before you're finished."
The boy smiles. Velma picks a book off the shelf and slumps down beside him, wrinkling her nose.
"Why do you smell like that?"
"Like what?"
"Like... I dunno. Smoke and something else."
"Oh." Shaggy shrugs his lanky shoulders. "My parents smoke."
Daphne Blake's mother and father seem to enjoy primping and primming her, and she does as well. But even spoiling her can't beat the joy she feels when they take her for self-defense classes, when her stance is solid and she throws blows at the gelatinous training dummy. Dancing and tea parties are nice, but fighting is where her talents seem to lie.
"Be careful who you hang around," her mother warns her. "I never want you to have to use any of this in your day-to-day life."
Her father shuffles her off to meet other spoiled kids, but very few connect with her. Perhaps it's only natural that people of the same background of leisure don't like others of the same breed. It takes the special feeling out of it.
So Daphne finally plucks up the courage to sit with Fred Jones and his friends. There is no mischief or mystery in her life at home, and that just seems unnatural. She immerses herself in novels and books and that weird hungry feeling she gets whenever Shaggy's parents drive them home.
Fred Jones meets Norvile Rodgers on the first day of kindergarten, but really they've known each other for a while now.
Well, to be more accurate, his parents know his parents. They go over once a month, both of them, tucked into their rust red van. Fred's never allowed to leave the vehicle.
The Rodgers home is odd to him. He's used to being the mayor's son, with cold and impersonal architecture, but their house is grungy and obviously a family heirloom. There's a gnarled oak tree with a swing tied to it, and sometimes their son will be swinging when they pull up. Fred tried waving once, but the boy always seems antsy.
The house is a gray color, with two floors. There's a green house in the back, with flowers and venus flytraps and that special patch his father says is just a weed. Fred's only seen the place in photos- dad says he's keeping them 'just in case.'
Fred's never been inside, or seen the Rodgers's personally, but he has met their neighbor, Angel, a tall black woman who takes care of Norvile when everyone is too busy. Judging by how at ease he is when the woman approaches, that's often.
That doesn't really bother Fred. His dad is never around. Though, deep down, he did kind of wish he had a nanny to keep him company.
"It's not just a weed," Shaggy tells Fred, affronted. "It's, like, weed. That's its name."
"Oh," he says.
"Yeah. You smoke it. Well, I think there's other ways to go about it, but I've only ever seen ma and pa smoke."
"Is that that terrible smell?" Daphne asks, picking at his bedspread. Shaggy lives on the second floor, far back. "You really need to get these washed."
"Well, it's the smoke and that, really. I can never remember to bring the clothes over to Ms. Dynamite for a wash." He shrugged. "I'm used to it."
"Me too," Scooby added.
"Weed is a drug. My parents told me about it." Velma lowers her voice and adjusts her glasses. "You won't get in trouble, will you?"
"No? I mean, sick people smoke it, so why would I?"
"Sick people get a special kind of weed. A government weed."
"Oh," Shaggy says, reaching up to rub at his eyes. "Well, I bet it's not as good-smelling as ma and pa's."
Shaggy's father is a tall but stout man, with big hands and a nice smile. He loves flowers and cooking stews, and he never hesitates to tell Velma things, or take them back to the greenhouse when they ask.
"Won't you get in trouble for this?"
"You lot are supervised, aren'tcha? I'll keep you safe."
"No, I mean with the weed. Won't the police arrest you?"
Shaggy's father lowers his voice. "Lemme tell you somethin', little miss. Maybe I would get arrested, somewhere outside of this town, but I've got connections here. Mr. Jones is a very good friend of mine-"
"My dad?" Fred butts in.
"Yes, sir. Your dad," he agreed, kneeling down to put a hand on the boy's shoulder. "The wife and I owe a lot to your old man, Fred."
"Why?"
"Now, I don't want you to think he's doin' this for selfish reasons-"
"It's okay, Mr. Rodgers. I know my dad is one of the bad guys."
"Why dya say that?"
"He told me. Also, I found an old monster mask in the attic. I think he might've chased some kids out of town or somethin'."
"Fair enough. Not gonna lie to you if you already know the truth." Mr. Rodgers stood up. "He likes what I'm sellin'. Ergo, he leaves me alone. Mr. Jones would never stick his neck out for me- make no mistake- but as long as I don't provoke the cops, he doesn't send 'em."
Shaggy was curiously examining the growth patch. "Dad, we're missing some."
"Nah, son. Red Herring was here for a visit yesterday, while you were with Ms. Dynamite."
"Oh," Shaggy says. "Okay."

Best books of 2012
Tumblr media
☆ BEST OF THE BEST ☆
I can't decide between three books this year... So I'm just going to go for it and say my absolute favourite has to be a tie between them.
☆ Alys, Always by Harriet Lane: I absolutely devoured this first novel about a lonely woman who latches on to a high-profile literary family after she witnesses the death of their matriarch in a car accident. Fast-paced, beguiling, and subtly sinister - an excellent debut from an author I am keen to follow in future.
☆ Signs of Life by Anna Raverat: This is one woman's account of an affair she had some years ago, which destroyed her life - but it's so, so much more than that. Wonderfully written, uniquely structured and a slow-burning delight.
☆ Lamb by Bonnie Nadzam: I was absolutely wowed by this dark, intense and unsettling debut about a man kidnapping an eleven-year-old girl. It takes the reader on a difficult journey, but has a stunning narrative style - vague, seductive, disturbing, utterly compelling.
☆ FAVOURITES ☆
☆ When Nights Were Cold by Susanna Jones: One of those unreliable-narrator stories I love so much: a tense historical tale about a group of female students with ambitions to become Antarctic explorers. I read all the author's books this year, but this was by far the best. Beautifully put together, complex, atmospheric and consistently intriguing.
☆ Narcopolis by Jeet Thayil: This lyrical and often very surreal novel (loosely) follows a group of opium addicts in 1970s Bombay. It won't appeal to everyone, but I absolutely loved the dreamlike atmosphere created by the non-linear, rambling narrative.
☆ Communion Town by Sam Thompson: As the subtitle says, this is 'a city in ten chapters': a series of interconnected short stories all set in the same unnamed city. With elements of fantasy and inexplicably strange details, I found this absolutely fascinating and the variety of narratives thrilling.
☆ Invisible by Paul Auster: Completely dazzling, compulsively readable, and effortless, this is my favourite book by Auster so far - a dark coming-of-age tale with the tone and pace of a thriller. This is what fiction should be, and I wish I could find more brilliant novels like this!
☆ Don't Look Now and Other Stories by Daphne du Maurier: I loved this collection of dark, twisted short stories: the titular tale is a classic, but most of the others are of equal quality and power, and almost all feature a spellbinding, revelatory twist. Sinister and fascinating. I also read two other anthologies of du Maurier's stories - The Birds and The Breaking Point - which are also recommended.
☆ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ☆
☆ Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn: You've probably already heard about this - a huge buzz has been building around it all year and it's been mentioned in practically every 'best of 2012' list I've read. Dark, twisted and full of unpredictable revelations, it's a great mystery told by two thoroughly untrustworthy narrators. I was fascinated (mostly in a negative way) by the characters and there was so much tension I don't know how I managed to resist reading ahead.
☆ Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell: A book I'd been meaning to read for a while (years, actually!), this was unsurprisingly uneven (it's a patchwork of different narratives set in different places and times, varying from the distant past to the far future) but truly brilliant in places. It was also, I think, the only book I read in 2012 that made me cry.
☆ Hawthorn & Child by Keith Ridgway: An odd, fragmented collection of what might be called short stories, or chapters of the same story told from very different perspectives. Brilliantly written and immensely intriguing, albeit a little frustrating at times - and far too short!
☆ The Girl on the Stairs by Louise Welsh: A wonderfully creepy and suspenseful thriller about a pregnant woman who, alone in an unfamiliar country, becomes convinced her neighbour is abusing his daughter. Tense, compulsive and very clever.
☆ The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton: If you're a fan of the author, this is - in my opinion anyway! - her best yet. It's a typically rich family tale with several different narrative threads set in different time periods. It's completely addictive and chock-full of brilliant twists. An absolutely fantastic guilty pleasure.
☆ Waterline by Ross Raisin: Harrowing and emotionally exhausting, Raisin's second novel is about a man wracked by grief who descends into alcoholism and poverty after the death of his wife. It's brilliant, devastating and compelling - I read it in one sitting - but a very difficult read.
☆ The Last Weekend by Blake Morrison: Disturbing and insidious, this is a classic unreliable-narrator tale. I found it unpleasant in places - the narrator is horrible - but at the same time, it was very difficult to tear myself away.
☆ Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt: An unashamedly emotional tale about love, friendship and fitting in, framed within the story of a misfit teenager whose beloved uncle is dying of AIDS. I thought this might be overtly sentimental, but it was actually very touching and I loved the characters.
☆ HONOURABLE MENTIONS ☆
Although I didn't think they were perfect, I enjoyed the following books enough that I don't want to let this post happen without giving them a mention: The Bellwether Revivals by Benjamin Wood, What They Do in the Dark by Amanda Coe, The Book of Summers by Emylia Hall, The Garden of Evening Mists by Tan Twan Eng, Purgatory by Tomás Eloy Martínez, Broken Harbour by Tana French, and The Possessions of Doctor Forrest by Richard T. Kelly.
