“Dude, that frontside carve you did on that last one was sick,” Toby said, laughing as he shook the water from his hair, letting out a relieved sigh once they were back in the shade. “You hungry?” He asked as he unzipped his wetsuit just enough and pulled his arms out of it to be shirtless again. “Because I’m starving. I could eat five hotdogs right now. No, ten. Fifteen, even,” Toby added with a laugh. “I’d dare you to race to C’s but we both know who’s winning that,” he jokingly added.

             She takes a deep breath, doesn’t turn to him but the cloth in her hand stops going back and forth on the tabletop. She wishes he were right, she wishes she didn’t have to be strong.  ❝ Yeah… And tell me, who’s gonna hold down the fort if I do that? You? ❞  He’s not even home most of the time, there’s no way she can leave the kids to rely on him, not when he’s so inconsistent, not when they don’t know if he’s gonna decide to disappear into thin air all of a sudden for days. She WISHES she could rely on him, she wishes she could take a day off from being strong and be hurt but she can’t cause then she’ll have two kids at her bedroom door worrying and she will not let them worry over her, they have enough to worry about without her adding to it.

             She doesn’t want a fight, doesn’t want to be stuck here going back and forth on things that don’t matter, she just wants him to be here. Please, just be here. Her eyes start tearing up and that settles it on not turning to him, instead she looks up, tries to stop the tears from falling and takes a breath.  ❝ Nevermind. I’m tired, I’m gonna go to sleep. You can do whatever. ❞  She clears away the tears with the back of her hands and throws the cloth onto the sink  ( who cares )  before turning to go up to her bedroom. She doesn’t look to him, can’t bring herself to look at him.

             It’s only when she gets to her room and closes the door behind her that she allows herself said breakdown, that she falls to the ground with her back against the door and cries. She’s tired, she’s so tired. And she needs him and doesn’t know how to tell him that, not in a way that would make him stay, not in a way that doesn’t make her sound like a spoiled girl throwing a tantrum cause her life isn’t the picture perfect thing she dreamed of as a child. She gets it, she’s had to grow and adapt and her dreams have changed, but somewhere deep inside she’s still the 13 year old girl looking at a boy and trying and failing to find the words to ask him to stay, just for her. Just… Being selfish for a moment and saying what she needs without fear it will drive him away… It doesn’t feel like she can do that.
