can I be cruel tonight. vietnam vet soda who admired his dad for being a soldier for years bc as kids we’re blind to the truth of war and sacrifice and all he knew growing up was that his dad had to go fight in the korean war like weeks after he was born and didn’t come home until soda was at least eighteen months old. darrel sr. never talked about the war, he acts like it didn’t happen, except he wore his dogtags under his shirt every day for the rest of his life after—and then soda wears them when his dad dies because it’s like keeping a part of his dad with him, something he was proud of his dad for.
and then soda gets his own, when he’s eighteen and they send him that letter condemning him to the same fate he realizes that there was a story behind that blank expression his dad would have some nights, stories similar to the ones sod’s has now and he feels sick to his stomach. but he also feels closer to his dad than ever. and now sometimes if darry and pony can’t find soda they go to the cemetary and soda will be sitting on the ground in front of their parents’ graves and his fingers will be tangled in the chain of his dogtags as he just stares into the middle distance, like their dad used to, once upon a time

So I heard that recently, the creator of The Backyardigans, Janice Burgess, passed away.
Tumblr media
I loved that show and it's characters ever since I was little, still do to this day, it was creative and fun, I still love watching my favorite episodes and listening to my favorite songs.
I made a couple of doodles of the characters at least last year, so I'll try to find them (I don't remember where they are ): )
I hope she knew how her show impacted so many of us, even beyond the USA, and I hope she's resting easy.

Does anybody know of songs that can be/are about an aroace person and their aroace-ness? Specifically being totally chill about it. Not a pride song, but more an 'I don't get it, but whatever floats your boat I guess' song. Kinda like the song Stupid With Love but just the part about being into math instead of love.
Songs that have an "oh, you have a partner? That's cool, I have a houseplant named Deborah" vibe If that makes sense at all
I wanna make a character playlist

beginning the qetoiles narrative playlist with undertale’s “hopes and dreams”, a very powerful and uplifting music, and later down the line having a melancholic song with the lyrics “all of your dreams / swallowed in the heat of the sun” is perhaps me cooking tbh….

indulgently , but what would talon's impressions of rell be if the three of them travelled together ? and even more indulgently , does talon ever get used to yone's humming or whistling ?
Once they learn why Rell is also out for the harbingers Talon will settle with it, maybe shake their head and remark on how they were forming a crew to fight the inevitable. Without a history of family or even a place of belonging, there ain't much empathy they can share with her, only understanding for her search. Maybe be a little too pushy of a voice telling her seeking revenge will be good, actually. If Yone glares at them hard enough, they'll relent though. Nothing to the young witch personally, but Talon already doesn't handle company too well. If all three of them were to take up travelling, Talon would probably try and be ahead of the others, work as a scout. But this won't work during long trails of horseback. (getting a horse for them is also gonna be a problem with the beasts scaring so easily...) They'd ask Rell questions now and then on her powers, and what her trickery with metal and fire is capable of. Knowing a thing or two with their own magic of summoning brimstone weapons, they might even offer her pointers or help with her training. They'd also share stories of all kinds if asked, they might have one or two about other witches. This would all depend on if Rell even let them talk to her much, let alone tolerated their existence near her. Talon's very much on the same page of 'I would rather the demon-thing was anywhere but here.'
Noticeably, Talon would be standoffish and cruel when all three begin travelling together, making pointed remarks especially at Yone's expense. But as they went on, seeing both the gunslinger and witch's prowess, they'd become far less loose of tongue, and their avoidance would be more from something troubling them, than unfriendliness. No matter the outcome of their little venture, and if the harbingers can be stopped at all, Talon knows very well how both of them feel on hellspawn. And nothing can sway them that the second they're finished, their alliance will no longer be in place. And against both of them, Talon knows they don't have much of a chance. While I'm side-tangent-ing here I'll also say that Talon would try to keep their affliction to themself as much as possible. Any questions about their feathers will be blocked, sidelined, ignored, or they would provide an ill-omen and say nothing else. They'd try to keep any coughs out of sight or ear of both of them - there's no sympathy for their plight, and they ain't looking for it.
With both Yone and Rell around, Talon's nature would simmer far quicker, which would be conflicting to them; both unnerving, and welcome. When they hear Yone hum or sing for the first time, mostly likely after being in his company a while, they'd watch with a quizzical look and ask why he was doing that without an instrument accompaniment - whistling would be given a grimace and the question would be to interrupt it after a short while. Even if he were to explain to the best of his ability, Talon would still find it odd, but with future tunes they would ask him what particular ones are when he finishes, or if they're repeated, ask if it was this or that. Maybe while around a fire one night, they'd ask if they could hear a full song, and what it meant or the history behind it. Talon has no intent on joining in or complimenting how Yone carries a tune, but they'll learn one in return for having to listen to it. Whistling will still be unwelcome, but they'd give an excuse like 'it'll disturb the horses' rather then say it's irritating them, or even suggest he hums instead; accidentally said along the lines of, 'it sounds better when you hum.'

one (1) thing you like the most about taylor swift?
her ability to tell stories through songs! i don't know how to explain this exactly, but what i mean is that everytime you listen to her songs, you can literally see the whole story in your head and not every songwriter can do that, that's what makes her special, it's a literal magic for me ✨️ my imagination is always going wild when i listen to her lyrics.

as we're both yeule fans, tell me which song you prefer !!
I've really enjoyed most of their music over time so I have some different ones from different eras ehe.
From Softscars my favorite song is 'x w x' I love seeing a yeule song with so much energy and the harsh vocals hit SO GOOD.
'Pretty Bones' will always have a special place in my heart since it's the song I discovered them through. It's so pretty and I loved driving around listening to it at night.
From the earlier ambient work I love 'About Her' and 'Desire'.
What are yours? :o

Breakcore may not be a super strictly defined genre but I swear ppl will call anything that has noises at all like y'know music has like just normal ass music from any other genre breakcore with a straight face and I just have to sit there and try to not reveal I'm a pretentious fuck when it comes to this stuff
#rat rambles#this is abt you splatoon players there's a maximum of One side order song that you could argue is breakcore#and I would consider it breakcore but its very very lowkey breakcore#and its c0ld st0rage btw its sooo light but it was enough to make me go oooooo a new sploon breakcore question mark? when I first heard it#I do rly like side order music but plsssssss most of it isnt even close to breakcore#also on a related note most sploon toon music in general is like. fairly normal music imo? like its Good music dont get me wrong but like#most of it is either just normal ass music with voice filters or gasp the horror uses samples in its melodies#I adore the soundtracks of all three games so dearly but talking to other ppl who do can be funny because theyre all like yeah its rly#weird I didnt like it at first but its grown on me haha#and I just have to sit there like bro I used to not care for a lot of it because it was Too normal for my taste#now by that I mostly mean like squid squad and all the idol music from the first two games#and tbf. the idol music still isnt rly my jam usually marie gets the exception because of that one amv#like I love pearl and marina with my heart and soul but off the hook music has always been some of farthest from my taste in music#which is why damp socks need to make more songs Now because holy shit do they go crazy#it takes my favorite part of off the hook (the vocals) and aplifies what I liked abt them and puts them over absolute banger instrumentals#splatoon piano is my favorite shit you know shits abt to go crazy when they pull out the splat band piano#but yeah note my specification of the first two games idol songs because deep cut music is absolutely delightful#frye's occasional english is kind of scary but it gives me fuel for my history nerd frye hcs so I will welcome it with open arms#also while I love all of the idols vocals deep cut vocals are the most consistently good imo#actually I should just like make a splat band tier list or smth instead of going on a tangent in the tags of this post

Hi there! First thank you always for translating the Rebecca interviews they are really fun and interesting to read. Seeing some of your comments you made about the Korean Dannys views on romance/homosexuality I was curious. When I first read the novel which was a long time ago, my interpretation of Danny and Rebecca’s relationship was 50/50 maybe really lovers but could also just be some type of non-romantic attachment. After watching the Korean production I feel that there’s a stronger implication of them being lovers. Some Rebecca fandom friends that I know are on the skeptical side I guess about them being real lovers so this is a topic that interests me. I was curious do you think you would’ve still thought of Danny and Rebecca as lovers if it wasn’t for the Korean production/Ock Joohyun? Really wanted to know your thoughts about that! Actlly I want to think of them as lovers but like if asked to defend why I think they’re lovers I’m not sure I’d personally be able support my view properly with evidence or anything since I’m not the good at analysis type etc haha. I hope this makes sense? Thx
Tbh it's kind of hard to say I feel that way 100% with no bias but,,,
(lol under the read more bc i ended up rambling)
Actually, the way I got into Rebecca was I discovered joo hyuns performance > i read the wiki > i watched a subtitled version of the german performance > I watched the Korean production > then I read the book > then I translated the Korean script further and read interviews.
Joo Hyun's performance was only just her singing the Rebecca long reprise at the top of act two, it wasn't really a song that incredibly showcased her interpretation or feelings towards the dynamic between rebecca and danny. when I read the wiki I was already thinking danny and rebecca sounded gay as hell and even watching the albeit reserved german production i felt like the specific situation that danny was found it alluded to that lover dynamic. like im a lesbian LOL so I kind of immediately went hey theres another lesbian right there. When it came to how maxim talked about rebecca it only further cemented in my mind that rebecca was also a lesbian. so like even from the german production, i felt that rebecca and danny were lesbians and had something together. now whether that something was balanced is another story, but i deff in my heart knew that they were some kind of secret lovers.
i don;t think in my mind that i ever had any doubt that rebecca and danny had some kind of more than mistress and servant relationship, and i dont think that i ever doubted that it was ever one sided. idk i just felt it in my gut. But i also moved on from the german production quite quickly when i got a copy of the rebecca production. that initial feeling of theyre lesbians really bloomed into oh they really loved each other when i got to the korean production and joo hyunie was pulling out all the stops. like the way she was acting,,, there was this palpable sense of love, the kind of love that felt equal. i've also talked about this before in one of my review essays (on my writing blog) but i think the contrast of her age against the older german dannys did a lot of work to bring that love closer to "lovers" and a more balanced dynamic imo.
i remember talking to a german rebecca fan and they talked a lot about doing a lot of contextualising and rationalising, trying to bend the script into a way that danny and rebecca were something in a mutual sense. i remember being really confused about that. like they had to put a lot of mental energy into rationalising that they were "mutual lovers" whereas it felt innate to me that they were.
Re: the age contrast. When I finally got to reading the book as well, in my mind i thought danny and rebecca grew up together as children (the line where danny has been with rebecca since she was young). also please note that i'm asian so like cultural aspects of rebecca flew over my head at times, but when i read it thats what i thought that line meant. but i talked to a european rebecca friend of mine and they said danny is referred to as governess and usually theyd be at least like 20 so when danny says she was with rebecca since childhood she meant in an overseeing kind of way; child and carer relationship. me not knowing that cultural thing impacted the balance i saw in their relationship which is why its also interesting that a lot of the korean dannys felt the same way i felt.
i haven't read the korean translation of rebecca so i dont know how they translate that cultural aspect/line but joo hyun, shin young sook, jang eun ah and kim sun young as i have just discovered all thought that danny grew up with rebecca. that her mother was rebecca's nanny and because of their close proximity grew up together. even before reading the interviews where these dannys said that, i also thought that was the case. so maybe its a culture thing?
but because of that, the relationship felt balanced enough that i felt like it was mutual. compounded by the more emotive ways that joo hyunie was expressing just how much she loved rebecca, it felt like a no brainer to me that they loved each other exclusively. sure rebecca was out and about having sex, but it wasnt sex out of love, it felt like sex out of fun or a habitual need, it felt like it meant entirely nothing to her. ergo her "love" (the kind beyond just physical sex) was only for danny. ive always felt very certain of that.
i think your feeling of not being able to defend danny and rebecca mutual relationship is understandable. there's so much ambiguity in the original text that its difficult to say that this thing points directly to this, or lots of lines could mean different things to different people. i'm always the opinion of rebecca is a mirror and depending on what themes or ideas or messages that u pick up, it's really just a reflection of what u want to see most. now whether i agree with another person's image of rebecca through that mirror is an entirely differnt matter, but i can't help but feel that way with danny and rebecca. its like,,, all i can say is, have you looked at them?? dont they seem that way to you??
lol im sure if i put my head into it i could make an essay to "prove" that theyre in a mutual relationship, and i know theres plently of evidence that i could pick out, but the gut feeling has been there from the start!

What's your PhD about?
I haven't started it yet cause I'm looking for funding first so this might change (also I've altered the PhD propossal depending on the professor that would be my supervisor) but basically I want to study the Muses through the lens of Cultural Memory.
The ideal thing would be to study them and their evolution throughout ancient Greece, but that's impossible so for example my current PhD director suggested I should focus on the Archaic Era (also the Dark Ages, so around the 10th to 6th centuries BCE more or less). I am very interested in the relationship between identity, literacy, and religiosity, so the Muses are perfect for it, as they were used by the Greeks as a sort of fact-check for aoidoi and poets, which were the preservers of Cultural Memory.
Most stuff that's been written about the Muses has always been very philological and especially related to the 'invocation of the Muses' so prevalent in Greek literature. I want to open the scope to new angles, something never done before, and I have experience working with Cultural Memory from my Master's Thesis, so I thought it would be a cool approach :) It's gonna be much more theoretical than you would expect, but I love that sorta thing. Also it's impossible to separate the Muses from literacy so I'll be looking at written sources for sure, my good pal Hesiod (whom my Undergrad Thesis was about) will occupy a good chunk of the research I'm afraid.
So yeah, that's it. This won't happen if I don't get funding tho, so I could just never write this Ph.D. Who knows.
#ask#sorry for the lengthy answer anon i've had to write so many phd proposals in the past few months i just go with the autopilot#i hope it's comprehensive enough. and please feel free to ask more questions!! i am very passionate about this so i would love#to answer more stuff like this :)#i'm currently researching my second master's thesis btw#it's gonna be about the cult of the muses in thespiai#so a bit of context#the heliconian muses (which are like the 'canon' muses; the ones described by hesiod) 'originated' around helicon mt#this is a real place in boeotia greece#the valley of this mountain is the valley of the muses. hesiod lived right there#in ascra.#ascra at some point was conquered by the city of thespiai. and it was part of it for the rest of ancient greece#(this happened very early on btw. like probably 8th or 7th century)#there was a sanctuary of the muses built in the vale#and this agonic competition (like a music festival) took place there called mouseia#it became incredibly important#but the thing is. this all happened in the hellenistic era (so 2nd - 1st centuries BCE)#there is barely any evidence of anything muses related in thespiai before that#noticeably it was in the hellenistic era when hesiod really became famous#so i want to study the evolution of the cult of the muses in thespiai; the evidence (or lack thereof) for it; and its instrumentalization#by thespiai#i'll mostly do it through epigraphy cause 1) it's the source i'm most comfortable with and 2) there's not really much else#i'll also sprinkle in cultural memory and some heavy theoretical stuff in there just for fun#so yeah i'm having fun with it :) hopefully i'll finish it by october!

So @contagiousgrace left an open tag for a Taylor Swift ask set, and while not all of the questions interest me these three compel me to answer
(No repeats! I made all three lists concurrently and did a lot of shuffling around.)
Six Taylor songs that are among my personal favorites:
"cowboy like me"
"Starlight"
"the last great american dynasty"
"Fearless"
"How You Get The Girl"
"22"
Six Taylor songs that I believe are objectively her best:
"All Too Well" (10MV if we're drawing a distinction but the original belongs here in its own right)
"ivy"
"Sparks Fly"
"Style"
"Would've, Could've, Should've"
"illicit affairs"
Six Taylor songs that are the most me:
"You're On Your Own, Kid"
"Sad Beautiful Tragic"
"Long Live"
"The Best Day"
"champagne problems"
"Bigger Than The Whole Sky"
Would be interested in hearing from @citrussunrises , @lovesodeepandwideandwell , and @nothinggold13 , but no pressure. If you're interested in these prompts, consider yourself tagged!

Am I really your first signed anon? That's an honor. I will cherish this title🥰
Anyways, if you are up to more OC questions, what songs do you associate with them? It can be anything: a song they like, a song they would definitely hate, a song that describes them, or just hearing it reminds you of them, whatever. I'm curious because songs are a great way to get to know someone a bit deeper.
💜
Hi purple!
I've actually tried to answer this many times, but it's hard!!
So the easiest one to me is Leo, because he used to be a huge Kit Howard fan and so the guy's biggest single (forgot the name rn) is his favorite song. It just so happens to be the song that triggers Lucas so badly. All this to say that Leo likes mellow jazz and soapbox romantic songs. He likes Careless Whisper unironically.
Lucas.... I relate to Ludovico Einaudi's Nuvole Bianche. First off because it's purely instrumental, which I think he'd actually like. He's definitely a classic music/videogame score/lo-fi guy. But also because of how deeply sad and simplistic the song is when compared to other piano pieces. I love it and it reminds me of this sad boy in a very big house that is Luke.
Jonah... is funny because the song is nothing like him. People Watching by Conan Gray. It's not something he'd admit to listening to, it's not even his style, but it'd have him bawling. Something about craving all that love and giving himself over to people, when he's such a stoic, rational person. (Leo actually listens to Conan Gray and Jonah complains loads)
Vince... This is a musical man!! He loves musicals, he loves theater, he loves drama. Everything with him is extroverted and so to me Vin is a full Hamilton nerd (history nerd after all, he HATES Hamilton, but like... he loves it), and Wait For It is his song. The one he adores, the one he could sing (well even), the one I actually think fits with his upbeat person, the fact that Vince may be the biggest realist of them all but also the biggest romantic. - Side note, Vince watched In The Heights and sobbed. Immigrant musical? count this man in. *btw Leo is also a musical nerd, so they bond over this
Wendy...Oh Wendy is a Lana Del Rey gay for sure. The romanticized toxic aesthetic? The ethereal vocals? The hyper femininity? The masculinity as an over the top performance? The one she likes and quotes is "You Can Be The Boss", but the one I actually relate to her is "Love". The whimsical, the 70s peace & love that this song has, in contrast with the gun cocking in the harmonics, which I think relates so much to Wendy's current peaceful state of self, that she certainly had to go through a lot of hoops to get to as a transwoman in a conservative house.
Bella...She's the hardest one by far, because Bells is a music nerd. She knows her stuff and music is meaninful af to her. She loves rock n' roll, she likes metal, alternative, grunge. Bella likes heavy beats and screaming lyrics and feeling the song in every single pore of hers. I don't wanna be cliche, but I'll go with System of a Down's "Toxicity". I think it was her first metal song and the one that made her fall in love and I can see 13yo Bell banging her head to the beat. Besides SOD is a pretty political band, which I think heavily impacted her, considering Bell grew up very poor.
