So! Final (spoilery) thoughts on Fresh Pretty Cure!:
Overall, this season is a really good Precure entry, arguably the best season in Classic Precure*, and a rather solid anime in general! Its greatest strength is its consistent writing: the quality of the episodes is almost always good to excellent, the characters are endearing, and I was caught off guard with some of the darker subtext. There were only a couple of minor structural issues with the pacing of the story, but those almost never bothered me as I was too busy enjoying the show to care that much.
It's a shame I never got used to the animation, because honestly this show has some of the better character designs in all of classic Precure, specifically the villains. Man, what an aesthetic. The action was mostly serviceable -- some scenes were very creatively choreographed, while others felt kind of plain, sometimes floaty. The final showdown was kind of a letdown, being mostly a lenghty ideological debate with a few short fight breaks here and there (not something I want to see when they just got new transformations!). It had me occasionally wishing I was watching Futari Wa or Yes!5 GoGo instead, which is something I don't enjoy feeling while watching a show I mostly like.
I also feel like it kind of turned into The Setsuna Show for like 10 episodes around the middle. I understand why it happened and I do adore her arc, but with Love also having enough screentime being the leader, I kinda felt bad for Miki and Inori for just kinda standing there sometimes. Balancing screentime is an issue we writers have when dealing with big casts, and thankfully it wasn't nearly as egregious here as in other series I've watched (since they all had their moments), but it was enough to be noticeable to me.
I've already talked about a lot of things I liked in my other posts, so this is basically everything big. Some minor things I appreciated:
The mascots are very loveable. As much as Futari Wa/Max Heart has all of my heart, I can only get so much of Pollun (especially early on) and Lulun before I need a break.
The damage from the fights isn't immediately undone? The civillians are aware of magical shenaniganry messing up their lives? Consequences exist and that is so good to see.
The family relationships on this show are S-tier. These parents will kill and die for their kids even despite suspicious behaviour, and that is such a refreshing take.
Anyway stan Miyuki
(* - as someone who is studying film, I think FreshPre is better written than its previous seasons. However, I do still enjoy Futari Wa/Max Heart better even though I know it's a very barebones Precure iteration, and I know others have their own thoughts disagreeing with mine)

Madoka: “My father taught me as a child that if you shoot for the moon and miss, the cold vaccuum of space will suck out your eyeballs. Failure is not an option. Go kill them.”
Yuni: “What are you going to buy in your lifetime that’s worth more to you than your own humanity”
Nodoka: “I’ll do whatever you want” “Then perish”

Merry
all ages, fresh precure, berry/passion, 4,190 words
what are two girls who’ve never dated anyone to do but see what it’s like together? it’s only the natural conclusion.
ao3 / ffnet
“I really like how organized your room is,” Setsuna noted, turning her head from side to side as she slowly walked through it. When her eyes fell on the bookcase, she paused to examine it. “Especially all these books. It’s impressive, keeping them all grouped by color like this.”
“Oh, that’s nothing,” Miki replied dismissively, but the pride in her tone expressed how well she was taking the compliment. She observed Setsuna’s progress from her place seated primly at her vanity table. “Leaving things out of place just isn’t perfect, you know?”
“But you go above and beyond, and I think that’s amazing.” Setsuna gave her a refreshing smile before leaning down to inspect a set of light blue spines. “This is a series, isn’t it? What’s it about?”
Miki shifted her posture to look around her shoulder. “Black Sparrow? It’s about a high school girl who becomes a detective and uses that name for her alias. I’ve collected them since I was in primary school.”
“Really.” Setsuna straightened up and turned toward her. “It must be good, then. Do you think I could find the first one at the library?”
“One of my best friends can borrow it straight from me,” Miki responded with a wink, and Setsuna’s eyes widened. “I’m not reading it right now, and I trust you to take care of it. I’d love to have someone to talk about it with.”
“If you don’t mind, then.” Feeling a rush of joy both from the designation of best friend and Miki’s encouragement, Setsuna carefully pulled the book from the shelf. It was just the right size to fit in her purse. “I’ll be sure to tell you what I think about it.”
As Setsuna moved to take a seat across from her at her desk, Miki smiled cheerfully. “I can’t wait. You know, it’s gotten much easier to talk to you now. I’m glad you could make time for me today.”
“It’s a relief to hear that,” Setsuna replied, rotating the chair to face Miki directly before sitting down. “Thank you for inviting me. I know last time we were alone wasn’t much fun.”
“It’s been a while, and we needed a chance to try it again. Plus, there’s always more to talk about.”
“Did you have something in mind?”
Miki nodded, then gave her a sly look. “Was there any dating in Labyrinth?”
Setsuna tilted her head. “Dating? No. I’d never even heard of it before coming here.”
“Is there anyone you’ve thought about dating since then?”
“I haven’t thought about it at all. Should I?”
“Why not? It could be a lot of fun with the right person. Hey, if you did, do you think you’d like to go out with boys or someone else?”
Setsuna stared down at the pale floorboards, giving it some serious thought. Dating was spending one-on-one time with someone, touching affectionately and being touched in return. At least, that was what she understood of it so far. “I don’t know for sure, but I’ve never exactly wanted to be alone with one of the boys.”
“Right?” Miki looked thrilled with the answer. “Boys are overrated. I’d rather let them think my brother is my boyfriend than have them ask me out. But some still do…” she added with a sigh.
“Hehe, you’re popular with others too, aren’t you?”
“Yes, but some people find me unapproachable. No one has ever confessed to me that I could see myself with.”
“So you’ve never dated anyone?”
“Hard to believe, right? And you’ve never dated anyone either.”
“That’s right.”
Miki leaned toward her expectantly. “Soooo?”
“So?” Setsuna repeated quizzically.
“Why don’t we fix that and try it together?”
“Try it… together?” she asked with a blink, long having lost the thread of logic tying together this line of questioning.
Standing up, Miki strode over to her and held out her hand. “Today, I’ll be your girlfriend.”
Setsuna glanced between her friend’s optimistic face, her hand, and back. Delayed realization dawned on her. “Eh?!”
—————
The sun shone brightly on Clover Town Street that morning, casting moving shadows below the rustling leaves of the line of trees at its center. Miki and Setsuna had strolled through it together before, but this was the first time Miki had laced their fingers together between them. She was in such a good mood that she sometimes swung their hands forward and back a little, and Setsuna continued trying to mentally catch up with this turn of events.
“Are you sure holding hands like this is okay, Miki?” she asked self-consciously, furtively glancing around. They weren’t alone in the district, but no one seemed to look at them for long.
“Hm? Why wouldn’t it be? Girls our age still sometimes hold hands like this as friends. No one’s going to think it’s anything else.”
“Oh… I see. But what if they do? You’re a model; they’d probably think you should be with someone more like you.”
Miki squeezed her hand. “I’m not embarrassed about being with you, Setsuna. In fact, I’m happy to show you off.”
A blush colored Setsuna’s cheeks. Awkwardly, she angled her head away. “Don’t tease me too much today, okay?” That side of Miki was cute, but she was becoming more aware of the fact that her inexperienced heart wouldn’t be able to handle it.
“Geez, I’m not always teasing~ Ah, the cinema’s right here.” Lightly tugging on Setsuna’s hand, Miki led her up to an old brick building. Setsuna caught the name of the establishment on the marquee before they passed under it, and there was a detailed listing of films on a rearrangeable sign between two sets of double doors. Miki stopped them there. “Did you give what kind of movie you want to see some thought? New showings will be starting in a few hours.”
Setsuna, looking around at the movie posters instead of the show times, left her gaze on one with an older boy and girl posing with a cat. She knew Miki preferred having some kind of opinion over none, and it gave her a good feeling. “What about “Love Fur Real”?”
Miki laughed, quickly putting her hand over her mouth to quiet more of them. “I thought that pun was awful, but it is funny when you say it so seriously.”
“Um, thanks,” Setsuna replied, not convinced it was something she should be proud of. “Do you want to see it?”
“Of course. I love a good romantic comedy. Let’s come back closer to the time.” Hand in hers, she guided Setsuna back onto the neatly paved path.
“What will we do until then?”
“I have the perfect idea,” Miki announced proudly. “We’ll go clothes shopping.”
“Is there something you need a new outfit for?” Setsuna asked, head tilted.
“No, we’re going shopping for you.”
“Wait, I don’t need anything either—”
“Nonsense. We’re on a date today, and this time, I want to dress up my girlfriend. Is that okay?”
Both Miki’s words and playful expression flustered Setsuna. “I… I guess so…” It wasn’t like she had to buy anything, right? And it would make Miki happy.
It definitely did. “Great. We can start right around here. A store with a style like yours is nearby, and we can branch out into the city afterward.”
Setsuna felt a bit tired suddenly, but she couldn’t deny that she enjoyed the special attention. Miki could have chosen anyone at all as her dress-up doll, and Setsuna imagined her eye for fashion would have made them instantly more beautiful. She just hoped Miki could find something on her that this expert would find worth her time.
The first shop was one Setsuna had been to with the Momozonos after joining them with barely more than the clothes on her back. It wasn’t as cutting edge as those further into Yotsuba, but it was within her comfort zone. About halfway through, she realized that was why Miki had chosen it in the first place.
“Aah, you look good in pants and skirts! It’s so hard to decide which is better,” Miki observed fondly, her hands clasped together in front of her. A pink-faced Setsuna was amateurishly turning for her in front of the dressing room, comfortable in the dark and delicately-laced skirt Miki had picked otherwise. It was already clear the compliments were going to make this feel like much more of a new experience than it was.
They left that store empty-handed. Miki had agreed with Setsuna that she didn’t need more of the same filling up her closet. On their way to the train, someone finally did acknowledge the two girls holding hands by waving at Miki. Friendly and composed, Miki used her free hand to wave back as they continued on their way.
“So you really aren’t embarrassed about being with me,” Setsuna said afterward, surprised by how relieving it was that Miki hadn’t moved away from her.
“I told you so. You’re not embarrassed about being with me, are you?”
Setsuna shook her head. “I think… I’m proud, honestly,” she admitted, and Miki’s smile radiated self-confidence.
Surrounded by buildings rising much higher into the sky, their next stop was a store with a clean and functional interior. Miki helped line a dressing room with sporty looks and then had her model the strikingly colorful assortment.
“I never thought about wearing these before, but they’re pretty practical,” Setsuna mused, looking down the length of her polo to the end of her cargo capris.
“They are, and they can be in style, too. If you keep up with the trends, you’ll find out when.” Miki looked her up and down as well. “It’s cute, but the mature look really does suit you best so far. Why don’t we move on?”
The next building Miki led her into was flashier, and the smooth black floor was shiny enough to see their reflections in. As Setsuna was more distracted by it than a lot of the clothes, Miki was the one to fill her arms again and send her on her way. Modeling the dark denim, torn band T-shirt and sleeveless black dress was getting easier, despite how radical the change was getting.
Of course, Miki’s support helped that a lot. “You pull off the cool look so well. If we were a little older, you’d look right at home at a live house.”
“You think so?” Setsuna asked, breathlessly pausing her rotation. The flattery was boosting her confidence, but it was also making her lightheaded.
“I do. Actually, I think mixing a touch of this with your usual clothes once in a while would bring out the best in you.”
“Thank you. But…”
“What?” Miki asked patiently.
“...What’s a live house?”
After Setsuna changed back into her own clothes and they held a short discussion, they agreed Setsuna should take the cropped denim jacket with her. One shopping bag left with them.
Miki was set on one more store she already had in mind, but on the way they passed an ice cream stall that her attention lingered on for a little too long. Noticing her friend’s distracted state, Setsuna tilted her head forward. “Do you want to get ice cream first?”
“Eh?” Miki’s eyes snapped back to her. “Well, if we do, we’re probably not going to want anything at the cinema.”
“That’s fine with me,” Setsuna said with a cheery expression, and once Miki mirrored it, they settled on sitting down with a pair of cones. Both of them managed to be surprised at the vivid swirls of color on display, and that made Setsuna feel more like they were on equal footing. They returned to their usual state of not holding hands for as long as it took them to eat, but resuming it afterward felt natural by then.
She’d never realized how adorable Miki looked when she was enjoying something that much.
The last stop was a boutique cute both inside and out, with a pleasantly pink interior and crowded clothing racks. The frilliest dresses Setsuna had ever seen were on display. They didn’t look childlike, but they were a lot to take in.
“You want me to try on one of these?” Setsuna asked, warily regarding the voluminous skirt of one of the mannequins.
“It’ll be refreshing,” Miki answered, winking at her when she glanced over.
Setsuna sighed. She was no match for this fashion style or her friend’s eagerness. “All right.”
She was promptly dressed up in both black and red dresses, a pastel blue skirt, and a matching frilly blouse. Miki was completely enchanted by the last combination, dreamily holding a hand to her face as Setsuna curtsied for her. “You look just like a doll,” she commented. “I’m too tall to manage that now, but your height is just fine.”
“So… it looks good?” Setsuna sheepishly clasped her hands together behind her. She was more than a little skeptical when she looked into a mirror, but the reflection in Miki’s eyes was always kinder.
“Definitely. I don’t think any of these were really you, though, so we should come back another day if you’d like to buy something. I’m sure we’ll find one that’s right.”
“Haha. I’ll think about it,” Setsuna replied, and she turned away her shy smile to slip back into the dressing room.
On their way back to the train, Setsuna was the one to lead them into one final browse at an accessory store. Filled with other students, the hair decorations and jewelry were impressively affordable. Despite the bustle, the atmosphere was cozy, with abundant sunlight illuminating the glass cases and quirky shelves.
“Did you find something interesting, Setsuna?” Miki asked from over her shoulder after they’d split up for a couple minutes. Setsuna nodded, pointing to a set of thin silver bangle bracelets.
“The gemstone flowers in the center are pretty, and they come in so many colors,” she explained.
A few seconds of mulling it over later, Miki plucked the bangle with the red flower and the bangle with the blue flower from the display. “They’re not expensive, so let’s get them.”
Setsuna blinked at her. “Just like that?”
“If you don’t want to, it’s too late to disagree now. We’ll have matching bracelets, just the two of us, so you can’t forget today.” Miki made for the register before Setsuna could get another word in, but she was happy enough to accept through simple silence. Outside, they each slid on their own bangle and took the other’s hand.
They returned to the cinema with a safe amount of time left before the movie. Miki took care of the tickets and their planned seating; Setsuna paid for their drinks. Never having been inside before, Setsuna kept looking curiously at everything around her, and Miki watched her in amusement.
Once she dropped down into one of the plush red chairs in the dim atmosphere of their theater, Setsuna sank right in. “Wow, I didn’t think about how much we’ve been walking until now,” she remarked quietly, careful to not disturb the clusters of other moviegoers seated around them. Time's gone by so fast.”
“It really has. Are you already tired?” Miki was seated in a more elegant way, but Setsuna could tell she was more relaxed than she let on.
“Not really. I could just use some time off my feet in something this comfortable.”
“Don’t fall asleep during the movie,” Miki teased. “We have to talk all about it when it’s over.”
“I won’t. I promise.”
Being so aware of the different nature of the day kept her nerves up just high enough to make sure of that. Her only concern now was the budding disappointment that it would eventually have to end, and whether or not that would prevent her from paying enough attention.
They whispered between themselves until the screening began, and then silent, comfortable darkness took hold for a long time. Whenever Setsuna felt her eyes drifting from the screen, she usually found Miki looking back at her. She sufficiently distracted herself with the cute couple’s misunderstandings and the adorable cat that kept them together, at least.
The lights came on again after the credits. Other attendees began to pick up their things and file out. Miki’s good mood was immediately apparent when the two moved to join them. “Keiko was such a sweet girl. It’s too bad her cooking sense wasn’t as good as her fashion sense.”
“It was nice of Haruto to try to teach her, even if the cat kept causing problems with that.” Setsuna laughed. “Little Yuki was so cute. I would have forgiven her even faster than they did.”
“Remember you said that next time Tarte does something you don’t like.”
“Eh—He’s different. He causes trouble even though we can understand each other, but I’ll do my best.” Setsuna shook her head with a smile, trailing along beside her on the low-lit path out. “This was a fun first movie to see. Thank you.”
“Don’t mention it. I’m grateful for your company too,” Miki returned. Her gaze caught on a clock on the wall as they passed through the first hallway out. “I still have time before I need to go home. Do you?”
Miki really was giving her the entire day. Setsuna was amazed her friend wasn’t bored with her yet. Definitely not there yet herself, she said, “Yes, I do.”
“Is there anywhere you would like to go before then?”
Honestly, she’d been thinking about the answer to that already. It felt silly to say it, but it was both a place she loved visiting and one she thought might be a perfect end to the night.
Bashfully, Setsuna nodded. “Could we go to the restaurant up on the hill?”
—————
By dusk, they were seated at a table covered with a pale blue cloth. The clinking of silverware around them punctuated the warm murmur of conversations of other customers. Their table was inside under the soft lighting spaced throughout the dining room, but the beautiful sky was visible through the wooden awning over the deck. The place was so welcoming each time Setsuna walked through the door, and yet…
“It’s more expensive than I remembered,” Setsuna said awkwardly. “I didn’t think about it before now, because I was never the one paying for it.”
“Magazines don’t just pay in fun, you know. What kind of girlfriend would I be if I didn’t treat you to something nice?”
Miki said it so easily — girlfriend, girlfriend, girlfriend. Setsuna was too stunned by it each time to say anything in return. She was envious of that boldness, but also felt wistful over the possibility that it could be an act at all. With her eyes averted, she said, “You don’t have to go that far just for this…”
She was being awfully spoiled for a pretend date, and it was getting her hopes up.
“Don’t worry. You can pay me back just by enjoying it.”
Miki’s sincere smile was enough to ease anyone’s worries for a little while, and Setsuna nodded. “Okay.”
They discussed previous times they’d been at the restaurant once that was settled, both revealing it was with their families. “I’ve never been here without my mother before,” Miki admitted, looking around as if seeing the establishment in a new light. “It feels so mature. Coming here was a nice idea.”
“I’m glad you think so. I’ve only come here on the Momozono Monthly Eating Out Day, so it’s the same for me.”
“It’s sweet that your family has something like that. It’s never planned that far ahead for us.”
“I think it’s sweet, too.” She couldn’t take credit for starting it, but she could allow herself to be just a little proud of it.
They ended up on a tangent that led to a conversation on their separate schools, and their food came not long into it. It looked and tasted as delicious as usual, and Miki’s enraptured expression after the first bite of her pasta dish was one more adorable thing to add to the list. Setsuna was sure she made something like it when she tried her own, because she could hear Miki giggle from behind her contentedly closed eyes.
She still had room for cake once she cleaned her plate, but only barely. Miki suggested sharing a slice to avoid either of them being too stuffed to walk home, and Setsuna was quick to accept. The rich chocolate dessert melted in her mouth, and she couldn’t think of many more moments she’d felt happier.
Miki paid as promised. It was fully nighttime when they stepped out, leaving only the row of lamps guiding them along the path down the hill to illuminate their stroll. Setsuna had been the one to take Miki’s hand this time, and Miki readily accepted.
Before long, Miki’s arm snuggled up against hers. “It’s gotten chilly out since this afternoon. I suppose it is that time of year.”
Setsuna took a moment to look over Miki’s outfit and see the problem: she had long sleeves, but only a thin scarf around her neck. Of course she would be cold. “Just a second,” she replied, letting go of Miki’s hand and stepping back. She set the shopping bag and her purse down long enough to take off her navy blue blazer and hand it over.
Curiously, Miki took it in hand and blinked. “Setsuna?”
“Go ahead and wear that. I’m not cold at all,” Setsuna explained.
After staring at her a little longer, Miki laughed and rearranged her things to do as she was told. “You could have just given me the jacket you bought today. Now you should put that one on before you do start to feel the chill.”
“Oh, you’re right.” Setsuna returned the laugh nervously and reached for the shopping bag. The denim jacket went on smoothly. She then picked up her things and resumed the walk, feeling Miki take her hand a second later. Setsuna was still kind of embarrassed, but she managed to look over anyway.
For the first time, Miki had a satisfied blush on her face. “...But thank you. It feels more special this way.”
“N-No problem.” Hastily, Setsuna turned her head away. Looking out over the green hill to the wide expanse of Yotsuba, it occurred to her again that their “date” was almost over. She exhaled with the predicted disappointment, unable to find the words to express it instead.
“I had a great time today,” Miki said. “You must have tried pretty hard to understand me since then.”
“I did. You’re my friend just like the others, so I didn’t want things to be awkward forever. And you’ve gotten more patient with me, haven’t you?”
“Was I that obvious?” It was a time Setsuna could picture her playfully sticking out her tongue. “I wanted to become a nicer person, and I wanted to understand you better. You were an important friend to me.”
“Were?” Setsuna repeated.
“Er, well…” As Miki trailed off, she stopped walking. Setsuna paused with her, bringing her gaze back to the other’s conflicted expression. Their clasped fingers kept them connected. “I said it was just for today, but I realized I don’t want it to end here. If you don’t either, I’d like to be your real girlfriend.”
Setsuna froze for as long as it took to process what Miki said. Undeniably genuine this time, girlfriend struck her heart with a tender ache. She wasn’t sure whether she or Miki had the reddest complexion. “Do you mean that?”
Of course she did, but Setsuna wanted the reassurance.
“I do. Could we say today was a real date after all?”
“Yes,” Setsuna replied, a hopeful smile blooming. She stepped back toward Miki, closing the suddenly unnecessary distance. “If you’ll have me, I’d be happy to.”
Miki, too pretty under the lamp overhead, drew another few centimeters closer. Even if they weren’t the only two this far on the path, it would have been impossible to spare any thoughts for someone else. “Do you know what people on a date do now, Setsuna?”
She did. She knew even before today, but the movie’s touching end was still fresh in her mind. It was difficult to believe she could achieve the same happy ending even as she prepared herself for it. “Mm hm,” she answered softly, eyes half closed.
Releasing Setsuna’s hand, both of Miki’s rose to her shoulders instead. She only had the shortest space left to shut her eyes and lean in before her lips pressed against Setsuna’s in a brief, sweet kiss.
When Miki pulled back, Setsuna’s erratic heartbeat continued hammering away in her chest. Miki looked affected as well, but she quickly, outwardly, recovered. “Now, let’s get home before our parents worry too much,” she said confidently, winking at Setsuna as she took her hand one last time. She restarted their progress down the hill, now at a pace where neither was dragging their feet.
One more treasured memory for Setsuna to keep in her heart, their long day together gradually came to a close.

All Stars Headcanons 2: Electric Boogaloo!
-The cures made a discord server so they could communicate easier. But after a few too many jokes that the younger cures and the more innocent ones shouldn't have heard, a cure from each team was appointed as a mod.
-Yayoi and Mai each have a folder full of everyone's cure forms as references for their art. Yayoi makes short mangas of their various battles, and Mai draws portraits.
-Setsuna's sensitive towards the subject of death since...well, you know. The others try to be careful about making death jokes around her.
-Hibiki once convinced Mana to take singing lessons since - as she put it - one can never stop improving themselves. The poor girl couldn't bring herself to tell Mana that she couldn't sing to save her life.
-Erika and Hime once tried to redesign Saki's Cure Bright outfit. According to their logic, "If the Max Heart and Yes 5's outfits can be changed, then anybody's can!" Unfortunately, their efforts were futile.
-Kappard once tried to attack the StarTwi cures while they were visiting the Huggto, Kirakira, and GoPri teams. The poor fool didn't stand a chance against the 20 of them.
-The MahoPre once gave broom riding lessons to the others. To make a long story short, Miyuki, Nozomi, and Hana are banned from flying.
-Kurumi, Towa, Hime, and Makoto comfort Yuni since they know what it's like for their loved ones to be in serious trouble with no foreseeable way of saving them.
-April Fool's Day is an absolute nightmare. The cures form different teams and hold a massive prank war. The form changing Precure are a force to be reckoned with when they all team up.
-When the StarTwi first met the other cures, it was a nightmare to try and remember who was who. Especially with Nagisa, Saki, Honoka, and Mai.
-When they find out that Lala and Yuni are aliens, Erika and Akane started cracking jokes about the StarTwi cures being outlaws.
-Once when everyone was fighting a powerful villain together, Princess cried out "We won't ever lose, because we have the power of God and Pretty Cure on our side!" The others never let her live it down.
-When she found out about Hikari's training with Itsuki and Alice, Iona offered to help out. They all agree that Hikari would be a force to be reckoned with by the time they were done with her.
-When they finally learned everyone's names, Madoka asked why Shiny Luminous and Milky Rose weren't Cure Luminous and Cure Rose or something along those lines. Nobody had an answer for her. Apparently, they had never given it much thought.
-Kirara and Miki model clothes for Erika and Hime sometimes. Homare convinced them to let Henri join in too. Erika's family still wonders how she met three pretty famous people.
-Ayumi tends to feel self conscious about not being a part of a team. Those feelings began to fade after she found Miyuki and Hibiki arguing about who's team she was a part of.
-One of HapCharge cures casually mentions how there are other Precure around the world and the rest of the girls lose it. "There are more of us?? And you never said anything?" Now they spend every break from school flying across the world to meet the other Precure.
-The other cures fight alongside the StarTwi cures whenever they get the chance. They've already finished what they had to do as Precure. Might as well give the new team a break.
-There's a betting pool for what the next team's theme is going to be, as well as how many cures are on the team and what their respective colors are. Let's just say that everyone betting on the Geode Precure are going to lose a lot of money.
-Urara got Hikari into singing as a way to relax when she was done with training. The two tend to preform duets together when they think alone. Their teammates made a bet about whether or not they'll get together.
-Mofurun's capable of taking the human form she has in the movie, but she only does when Mirai, Riko, and Kotaha are in trouble. It takes too much energy to do it when the MahoPre are just hanging out with the other cures.
-The older cures are fiercely protective of their youngest members. For the cures without younger siblings, it's like finally having three younger siblings. For the others, it's like having three more siblings to protrect. Anyone that chooses to pick on them doesn't realize the mistake they're making until it's far too late.
This is getting a bit longer than I thought it would, so I guess I'll continue this later

Closing thoughts on Fresh Precure!
Overall positive feelings. All characters were alright (as in, I didn't hate anyone) and even the fairy baby was tolerable. The pink heroine ranks second in my Pink Precure list so far. Cures Pine & Berry kind of just were there and not a lot would have been lost if they had been cut, but at least they weren't left in the dust with the pink one hogging all the spotlight. Also I enjoyed Miki's shameless confidence, "I'm Perfect" really is a great catchphrase. And Setsuna had one of the best character arcs I've seen in Precure so far. The bad guy duo was also entertaining enough, though I wish their relationship with Setsuna was developed more.
Tumblr media
There was more filler than in my previous Precure experiences, but at least it was mostly the good kind of filler that had decent character moments. And while the first half was just watchable for the most part, I felt that the quality notably improved when Chiffon started turning into a creepy possessed mcguffin (and I don't mean just because it stopped her icky squeaking). The beloved baby the heroines had been guarding for a few dozen episodes suddenly becoming an emotionless shell at random times and not really understanding what was going on really made the story more personal and serious.
I especially liked the long multi-episode finale because the stakes genuinely felt higher. In the other Precure seasons I've seen I haven't felt that much that the girls would grow during the story, because whenever they get a new powerup or form or whatever it would just be a different stock animation while the tension is identical to the previous episodes. But here the girls only reach their ultimate form at the very end and it actually feels like an achievement, and their opponents genuinely feel more threatening. So when the girls go on their final mission it manages to feel like they're professionals at what they're doing.
A problem I had was that I found the season to be kind of bland and lacking in personality. Like, what was the theme? Or you have protagonists who think that happiness is good and antagonists who want to spread misery, but that's some galaxy brain level theme even for a kids' show. At the very end the characters had passionate discussions about how it's important to have free will even if it can sometimes lead to sadness, but I was all "since when was this such a big thing for this show?" But let's be fair I'm not the most attentive viewer given my reason to watch Precure in the first place so it's always possible I missed something crucial.
Then you also had a bunch of motifs that didn't tie to anything. The heroes are named after fruits and also use card suits, while the villains are named after cardinal directions. What does any of that have to do with anything? And while I liked that the girls had other things than Precure stuff going on in their lives with the dancing hobby, it got so much attention that I would have wanted it to tie better to whatever the theme of the show was supposed to be.
Even if you ignore the theme issues, I found that the Labyrinth was severely underused as a location. Now when Setsuna turned to the Good Side, a lot of her drama was based on coming to terms with the bad things she did, which fair enough was more interesting than most of the Precure character writing, but feels a bit lacking after seeing the whole anime. Or at least I think that it would have been way more interesting if we had had a better picture of her past of (I assume) growing up in a totalitarian state where people are brainwashed to worship their leader when she was struggling to stay on the bad guys' side or learning to adapt to her new life with Love's family. And even for a kids' show I found it pretty cheap that the people of Labyrinth snapped out of a lifetime of indoctrination because they ate a doughnut and saw some girls in a battle at the end; if at least one of them had been a real character I probably could have tried to get into the mood, but now it feels like they only existed to make the Precure look good.
Visually the season was pretty ugly to me; The animation was super cheap and derpfaces were everywhere (and there's something disturbing about the eyes even in shots that were otherwise decent), but on top of that the dull colours were just awful. At least the henshin were animated well and the magical girl designs were top notch.
So now after seeing five Precure seasons I'd rank them like this:
1. Go! Princess Precure 2. Fresh Precure! 3. Kira Kira Precure A la Mode (stronger themes and visuals than Fresh, but weaker characters and story) 4. Happiness Charge Precure! 5. Doki Doki! Precure
Finally: While Love wasn't that bad for a pink heroine, she really lost points in the last episode. If your friend confesses their love to you, you should have the decency to give them a proper answer, even if it is "I have to think more about this". I was very much not on board how the show treated her dismissive non-answer as some kind of cute character quirk. Way to leave a bad taste in the mouth after an otherwise okay showing in the rest of the season.

Note
which precures would read homestuck without being dared to
Boy howdy. There’s a question I didn’t expect. Well let’s see here and go down the list:
Nagisa: Got into it shortly after launch, after hearing Honoka talk about it.
Honoka: OG reader, has been around for most of Hussie’s stuff.
Hikari: She didn’t read it until about halfway through its publication run, but caught up in a single night. She made fanart.
Saki: She tried to get into it for Mai, but it never really meshed with her. Still learned enough through osmosis to cosplay both Dirk and Dave.
Mai: She has five sketch books that are just redraws of the entire series with everybody replaced by Saki. None of her friends must ever see. They saw. They didn’t get it, but liked the art.
Nozomi: OG reader, not the absolute biggest fan, but did walk away liking it.
Rin: Saw Nozomi read it, and tried a little herself. Then she met Kanaya. The rest was history and fanfics. And special flower arrangements.
Urara: Currently lobbying for a broadway adaption. She is undecided which role she wants to play tho.
Komachi: She has changed her writing pseudonym to John Egbert, to get a better likelyhood of getting her Pirate Hurricane series published. She writes more like a mix of Dave and Rose though. It’s fucking mind expanding.
Karen: She had it fed through her home’s in house cinema to watch it with Komachi initially. They all ended up watching it.
Milk/Kurumi: “Vriska did nothing wrong”
Love: Her and Setsuna totally are like Rose and Kanaya. She is Rose of course.
Miki: She knows she is everybody’s Kanaya. She spend some time making masks of the characters. You can imagine how well that ended. Her Kanaya cosplays are somehow still great for the family boutique.
Inori: Yeah, she read it. Each reading session was followed by a trip to the confession booth. Eventually she just started reading it in the confession booth. The priest liked it too.
Setsuna: Her and Love totally are like Rose and Kanaya. She is Rose of course.
Tsubomi: Yes she read it. No her friends must never know. She doesn’t realize all of them have read it too.
Erika: The only friend Tsubomi opened up to about Homestuck. Turns out Erika runs one of the main japanese fansites of Homestuck.
Itsuki: Main mod on Erika’s fansite. Tsubomi must never know. Nor her family. Itsuki still feels too uncomfortable in their skin for that.
Yuri: Almost OG reader, she and Honoka frequented the same forums. Upon casual mention from Honoka, Yuri tried it out. Her young friends must never be tainted by this horror. Hopefully Hussie updates soon!
Hibiki:Learned about it through Ako. Found it pretty sweet, but didn’t make it all the way.
Kanade: Also learned about it through Ako. her bi heart couldn’t be stopped as she steamed through almost all of it in one go.
Ellen: Had been following it for about a year with Hummie before Suite happened. Continued reading while on the villains side. Often plays Homestuck songs while busking, and has several rearrangements on niconico.
Ako: Has been reading Hussie’s stuff since halfway through Problem Sleuth. She was 7 at the time. There’s a reason she a) is so crumby, Karkat is her spirit animal, and b) she decided to go and become an extra af phantom thief precure.
Miyuki: She is a reading machine, and of course this would capture her attention. She came in a bit late but found it on her own.
Akane: Similarly to Rin, she saw it over Miyuki’s shoulder one day, did a bit of reading herself, and got pretty hooked for a while. The hiatuses however broke her streak. Oddly enough the main emotion she took away from it is a hate for Equius, which she shares with Nao.
Yayoi: Main fanart contributor to Erika’s fansite. Her and Reika spend hours talking about Terezi.
Nao: Never did read it, she was too busy with her family and superheroism. More recently though, she decided to kinda wiki crawl the subject. Walked away primarily with a hate for Equius.
Reika: Another mod on Erika’s fansite. She has found her path. Her parents are disappointed. Screw her parents.
Mana: Tried it, didn’t like it. Square.
Rikka: Wishes she could live on that first planet they showed, with the froggies. She tries to dare Mana, but continues to get shot down. Mana is such a square.
Alice: Found it on one of her internet binges to bring her temper down. It proofed a surprisingly good tool to keep her mellow, which is why we see so little of her inner rage during the show. Another Terezi fan.
Makoto: Somehow has never come across a single shred of evidence that Homestuck exists. As unlucky as she is, she might be the luckiest of us all.
Aguri: Unlike Makoto, she has seen what Rikka and Alice are up to. She did read it a little, and liked what she saw well enough, but didn’t stick with it. Not enough time, and her twin sister lives fifty miles in Vriska did nothing wrong territory, so clearly she must be better than her. (She isn’t.)
Megumi: Came across it on her own, read it, but lost interest.
Hime: Runs the discord server for Erika’s fansite.
Yuko: Does occasional lyrics for Ellen’s arrangements, both on youtube and niconico, and makes the occasional troll riceball.
Iona: She was in fact dared, but by Megumi of all people, after she stopped reading. There is no bigger Rose fan now.
Haruka: As an avid reader, it did cross her radar, she went through it, and came out more determined than before to be the best princess she can be.
Minami: Amusingly enough, stumbled across it during her internet binges boning up on marine biology. Feferi popped up in her searches somehow, and the rest is history.
Kirara: Fans suggested it to her. She read it. The most fabulous Kanaya cosplayer of them all.
Towa: Kirara suggested it to her after she herself had finished (by now the webcomic is done IRL) partially because nerds gotta share, and partially because she truly felt it might help her cope with some of her inner turmoil from the guilt over being Twilight. Towa is slow in reading through this particular one, so she is still going through it today. Results unclear, she doesn’t talk much about it, even with Kirara. It might be helping though.
(The remaining characters I don‘t know as well as the others yet, but I’ll see what I can conjure up. Intriguingly I feel this also marks the first generation of Cures that lived in a post Homestuck world, what with Mahoutsukai airing in 2016, and Homestuck ending in 2016.)
Mirai: Got dragged in by the hype over the ending of Homestuck. Dared Riko to read it with her. They did. They planned their wedding to be like Rose’s and Kanaya’s.
Riko: Got dragged in by Mirai. Would feel very big deja vu next year when they both became moms to Kotoha.
Kotoha: Her moms protect her from this vice. (She found it anyways. There is no stopping the corruption of the youth.)
Ichika: Heard about it, but didn’t really care. Unfortunately for her she is on a team with Aoi, Yukari, and Akira.
Himari: Closet fan, wrote several dissertations about the science in Homestuck on Erika’s fansite. Which is probably where her crush on Honoka comes from.
Aoi: Loud and proud, likes this retro comic. Has started collabs with Yuko, Ellen, Amour, and Emiru because of course.
Yukari: She was a depressed gay teen during Homestuck’s peak... what do you think?
Akira: She was a gay teen during Homestuck’s peak... what do you think?
Ciel: She would have been save. But Undertale dragged her right into this fresh hell.
Hana: Huge fan of Undertale, but never quite pulled together the energy to tackle the behemoth that is Homestuck. Did learn through osmosis, with so many of her senpai cure friends being raving lunatic homestuck fans.
Saaya: Actually dodged both the Homestuck and the Undertale bullet initially. Hana then tossed Deltarune at her, and Saaya fell down the rabbit hole.
Homare: She had some inner hangups about getting into the whole mess, but Hana did dare her, knowing enough about the series to know that it’s message might gibe Homare the kick in the behind she needed to give ice skating another go.
Emiru: Big Undertale fan, but doesn’t care about the webcomic herself. Uncertain if even a dare would work, she does her own thing... well, besides the music. She freaking loves the music.
Amour: Read the whole thing in one hour to understand its impact on culture. What else would make her crash and join the heroes? Jokes aside, she did do it, and it did leave an impact on her. She was the one who connected Aoi and Emiru.
Hikaru: What are the freaking odds that she hasn’t read through it in its entirety three times this week alone?
Lala: Had her ship read it to her as something to fall asleep to. It put her to sleep quickly, actually, like tales from home. Her ship didn’t fare as well. It’s one of the biggest crack shippers on Erika’s site. Lala only heard like ten percent of the story.
Elena: Has neither the free time nor privacy to read a webcomic that’s now a decade old. Likes listening to Hikaru’s ranting about the series. Also likes how somehow that ranting makes Madoka’s face light up.
Madoka: It is unknown how she found the time, but she is a freaking huuuueg closet fan. She wants to talk with Hikaru about it, but still feels too uncomfortable being public about it. Hikaru does however know that MoonSollux, one of the biggest fanfic writers on Erika’s site, is her, but will wait for Madoka to come out of her shell in her own time.
Yuni: Missed the whole mess being a space alien idol phantom thief. Is getting a very wrong idea about human culture from Hikaru’s ranting. A dare would totally work.
(I have zero grasp on the Healin’ Good Girls, so not gonna do them.)

Me Ranting About a Bad Magical Girl Meme
So on discord an acquiatance-friend shared a magical girl meme about how “SJWs” ruined MG anime for the “West” that got me so angry that I need to rant about it here.
Their friend (that showed to them) sadly couldn’t find an original version so here’s one with some rapid-fire responses for reference
Tumblr media
I think that really most of the appearance ones are good and dealt with though I need to personally say “lolfuckyou” for “sexy girls and guys”.
Let’s look at the others?
mostly apolitical beyond same ethnicity
The points in the response are accurate but we can go much further. If having one, broadly speaking (setting aside outliers like Anthy who don’t count I guess) ethnicity is perceived as a political statement (and I don’t disagree it is one essentially), what are we supposed to make of the messages like “have compassion for people even if they’re different?” that when possible, people should always strive for non-aggressive solutions and try to talk things out, even if in the end an aggressive solution is sometimes required?
If the inclusion of a single ethnicity is a political statement, what should be made of the constant reminders by magical girl anime that gay people exist (more on this later) and that they are people with their own struggles and should be treated just as fairly as everyone else?
Or themes and messages like that people shouldn’t be judged for superficial differences that really don’t matter, and that people should always strive for forgiveness, even for people that they have distaste for?
What about Utena’s portrayal of an unjust system that essentially perpetuates itself through the lack of desire of people at the top to tear it down and allows for people like the Student Council to have dominion over the rest of the school? Or how Utena’s story very, very frequently is used to deconstruct common shoujo tropes and expose their sexist undertrappings? Hey, remember that time in Huggto that Masato told Emiru that she shouldn’t play the guitar because it wasn’t “for girls” and Lulu is portrayed as justly taking Masato a-fucking-part? Surely no political implications there!
What should be made of episodic points like Miki utilizing Utena’s own critique of the dueling system removing Anthy’s autonomy for his own selfish ends, to the point of repeating it basically word for word? Or how about that scene in Sailor Moon that is basically devoted to softly criticizing Japanese academic culture?
I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without noting that the blending of femininity and the masculine, in saying that one can be “girly” and still have the ability to save the day and defeat the villain (very very often without any sort of male aid), something soundblasted at the climax of Huggto that “anyone can be a Precure” is ridiculously political at its core?
(psst the SJWs are coming from inside the house)
P.S. I love how Star Twinkle Precure managed to arguably make this out of date even at the time of its creation.
generally leaves Yuri to the fandom
lol okay here have a couple canonical manga pages
Tumblr media Tumblr media
oh and here’s an actual movie screenshot
Tumblr media
(This is roughly an encapsulation of the entire scene btw I’m really not cherry-picking with this one)
Things the Ace Memester is also conveniently forgetting
1. That time in the manga that Chibiusa and Hotaru’s relationship is directly paralleled by Usagi herself to her and Mamoru’s?
2. How Saki and Mai, and Itsuki and Tsubomi, and Setsuna and Love, and Kanade and Hibiki and Lulu and Emiru (excusing the two examples I already gave) are so super clearly supposed to be love interests that it’s borderline text? And on the male end you have the super obvious basically transparent subtext in the Sailor Moon R movie. You also have to deal with Seiya’s super clear interest in Usagi and Usagi’s interest in... basically everyone.
3. How about the time Regina used the nearly explicitly romantic Japanese word for love in reference to Mana in Doki Doki Precure? Or that time in the manga Rikka explicitly imagined Makoto and Mana getting married? Or that other time in the anime where Rikka talked about how life would be actually genuinely meaningless if she didn’t have Mana in it? How that’s an actual thing she really says?
4. If i’m allowed to include adult-oriented MG anime, how about how Togo from Yuki Yuna is explicitly stated in the extended materials to have a crush on Yuna (as if the show isn’t obvious enough about it)? Or how Nanoha and Fate live together and adopt a kid? Or Homura and Madoka and the subtext Kyouko and Sayaka have going on? Or the canon lesbians in Magical Girl Raising Project that get killed off to show how gritty the show is, but certainly exist? I’e gone this long without even mentioning Utena and Anthy or Shiori and Juri.
Like “generally” is doing so much heavy-lifting that the poor soul collapses due to the weights simply being far too heavy to be held up with any sort of intellectual honesty.
“better art and animation”
If you only watch the super-streamlined and high-budget shows, maybe?[1] But like, I am old enough and have enough residual memory to recall how Crystal got lambasted in its first season for its low-grade animation quality, ignoring the often wonky animation in the original franchise.
Like, if you don’t see the poor animation in MG anime, it’s often because of all the short-cuts animators really clearly take to disguise it, typically pouring pretty much all their budget into the important scenes that people really do need to remember. Sorry, I don’t make the rules.
“Original ideas and no parodies”
1. Hey, remember how much inspiration Naoko got from the tokusatsu shows she loved for Sailor Moon? And how things like the team dynamics and color scheme of shows like Precure are so obviously cribbed from the team dynamic in Sailor Moon?
2. Hey, remember how Futari wa (even though this one does die), Splash Star, Fresh, Suite, Doki Doki (arguably), Princess, and Huggto have eerily similar redemption arcs for one (or more in Splash Star’s case) of their villains?
3. Hey, remember how basically every season of Precure has a “the Cures are going to break up!?!” episode?
4. Or how plot elements of Princess Precure (like the Haruka-Kanata dynamic) are really clearly inspired by Utena?
5. Or do you want to talk about how Nanoha was pretty clearly inspired by Cardcaptor Sakura at points? Or how adult-oriented MG anime quite often cribbed from Madoka tonally, thematically, and even in terms of character/plot beats? (MG Raising Project is often the most blatant about this.)
6. If we’re talking about “parody”, see above vis a vis Utena and shoujo tropes.
Like oh my god there’s so many examples that I’ve forgotten some as I’ve tried to write this up.
In sum, can reactionaries who want to co-opt MG anime please get out of this fandom? They’re really not wanted.
1. Though I recall all the nitpicking that Madoka’s animation got back in its time.

Mid-season thoughts on Fresh Pretty Cure!:
This is the season with the most cohesive writing so far. The characters are consistent and the episodes flow almost seamlessly into each other, which is a breath of fresh air after my experience watching Yes! 5.
The cures are great! Love specifically is fascinating to me, with her borderline unhealthy selflessness and tendency to neglect her own needs; she could swap places with Steven Universe and the two would pretty much fill each others niches seamlessly. I am also thoroughly enjoying Setsuna so far, because she is very angsty and I am very predictable. I do feel that Inori and Miki get the side character treatment, but that was also an issue in Yes! 5 (specifically with Komachi), so I'm chalking it up to the writers having to juggle a bigger cast than the first two seasons.
The villains are super interesting! Labyrinth is a surprisingly dark depiction of a pseudofascist world (I can't really call it fascism because while it presents the authoritarianism, the obsession with the one figure in power, and the severe restriction of freedom, it mostly lacks the extreme nationalist obsession that keeps a fascist regimen together and I think that's a deliberate choice but that's a conversation i don't want to have). The fact that the powers that be can just say "yeah we have no use for you, you're done living" and end a person's life with a word is bone-chilling. And the fact that they chose computer imagery to depict such a society? A full 13 years before the virtual hell we're seeing today? The vision. The genius.
(Actually now that I think about it, Steven Universe shares quite a bit with this season. I think people who like one might enjoy the other.)
I'm... still not used to the animation style. It's a bit too inconsistent for me, not just in terms of still proportions but also in the quality of the animation itself; it would be one thing if it was either simple and economic throughout or if they saved the budget just for the action sequences, but there are also random straightforward scenes like the girls just talking which are animated a bit too well for no discernible reason, and that was kind of distracting. Hopefully I'll grow comfortable with it soon.
In conclusion: someone find Love a therapist before she has a mental breakdown so severe it turns her into a pink Godzilla clone

PreCures and If They Would Survive A Horror Movie
Nagisa: would survive. She’s the most competent pink cure both on and off the battlefield, she will destroy the villain and look badass doing it.
Honoka: Her science stuff probably created the bad guy in the first place when it went haywire. And since she would know how to defeat the villain, she would have to die early on for there to be a horror movie at all.
Hikari: Absolutely would not survive. All she does is stand there and sometimes freeze the enemy in place for two seconds. She only transforms when reminded to. Also she’s a blonde and horror villains always go for blondes. There’s no way she’d live. Hikari would stand there frozen in place and scream until she dies gruesomely.
Saki: I don’t know but nagisa survives so i’m gonna say saki does too.
Mai: also don’t know. i’mma say no.
Nozomi: Would not survive. There is no way nozomi would make it out.
Rin: Would survive. After watching Nozomi die, Rin would go full-on enraged feral jock, transform, and set the villain on fire.
Urara: Would not survive. She’d probably go right into the dark place and do the thing where you spot the villain with your flashlight and dismiss it before doing a major double take but now it’s right behind you.
Komachi: Would survive, all the way. She reads a lot so she knows her way around how to survive these things. She writes a lot so she knows shady topics and would think of or know things that if she didn’t know, the whole team would be screwed. And she’s a walking weapon of mass destruction on top of all that.
Karen: She’s hiding in a secret fortified bunker right now with bodyguards and lots of entertainment. She would survive.
Kurumi: Would not survive. When she reverts to fairy form against her own will, the bad guy would pick her up and throw her into some mechanical thing that grinds her up alive and is the main reason for the R rating.
Love: Would last 5 minutes. Seriously, in the first episode she got lost and saw a creepy house in the woods that wasn’t there before and what does she do? SHE GOES IN. If that were a horror movie, she’d be a redshirt designed to be killed off in the first few minutes for the purpose of introducing us to the bad guy and showing how dangerous it is.
Miki: Would survive. Miki has gone up against a villain who came straight out of the horror genre (Northa) and survived. Another horror villain would be no problem. Unless it’s hide time and she can’t hide properly because she’s so tall.
Inori: Might survive. Might end up dying so that the cat in the movie doesn’t.
Setsuna: Setsuna has lived through a horror movie (episode 40 of fresh precure). She’s dealt with some serious heck. She will absolutely survive a horror movie.
Tsubomi: All Tsubomi would do is run. Thankfully, she’s not clumsy like some pinks, and would probably actually manage to make it out by running away.
Erika: Would survive. Erika cannot be killed.
Itsuki: This girl knows martial arts. She fought off a giant monster because it ripped a plushie she thought was cute. Horror villains should be scared of Itsuki.
Yuri: ABSOLUTELY would survive. Did you see her take out an entire group of Sunackies in civilian form? She’s a genius, a badass, and would survive a horror movie hands-down.
Hibiki: Would survive
Kanade: Would survive, but only because Crescendo Tone can bring people back to life.
Ellen: Would survive. Remember how she trolled some villains who were trying to scare her? She’d do the same thing. Except it’s also leading the bad guy into a death trap.
Ako: She’s that little girl who befriends the ghosts or whatever and talks about them casually in a scary way and then either becomes possessed, helps the villain kill everyone else, or just skip ropes on the playground singing terrifying versions of nursery rhymes. She survives, obviously. Forming an alliance with the villains can help you with that.
Miyuki: Would not survive. The reason for this is that by the time she realizes what genre she’s actually in, it would be too late for her already.
Akane: Would survive. Arson queen with the makings of a genderflipped shonen protag and super strength even by precure standards? She will destroy the bad guys.
Yayoi: Would survive. She watches enough anime and toku, reads enough manga and comic books, and plays enough video games to know everything about how to survive a horror movie. Also, she likes ghost stories. She ABSOLUTELY would catch on right away that she’s in a horror movie and maybe even fangirl over the villain a little.
Nao: Would be the only one to realize THE MAGIC TELEPORTING BOOKSHELF and escape.
Reika: Similar to Miki and Setsuna, Reika has gone up against a villain who’s scary enough to be in horror, in this case Joker. And she has won. Several times. Reika would absolutely survive. What’s another horror villain?
Mana: Would sacrifice herself to save her team.
Rikka: Would not survive. She’d obtain information and realize a way to defeat the villain that would 100% work, which means that while she’s explaining it, she’d be killed mid-sentence.
Alice: Would ABSOLUTELY survive. She has a freaking SPACE SHUTTLE, her place is full of traps and secret tunnels, she’s one of the most badass and terrifying cures, AND both she and her butler are Batman. Alice is by far the most likely precure to survive a horror movie.
Makoto: Did the sensible thing and hid out with Alice. Is currently hanging out in a secret room with protection, every light on, and her back to the wall so she can’t be ambushed from behind, watching willcraft monster school on her phone on silent.
Aguri: Dies of overconfidence.
Regina: Is the one to kill the villain.
Megumi: She would transform and be like “AW YEAH I GET TO BATTLE SOMETHING” and then obliterate the villain, surviving the movie in the process. Unless she tried to form change. If she used her dance attacks, she’d be stabbed or dismembered or eaten while she’s charging up her attack.
Hime: Survives the movie itself. Is killed after the credits to show that the villain isn’t really dead and set up a sequel.
Yuko: First one on the team to die.
Iona: Would definitely survive. She’s the only one on her team who’s 100% cool with doing what it takes to defeat the bad guys and she’s a badass.
Maria: Did you see the time she took out 4 monsters at once? She would survive.
Haruka: Like with most pinks, Haruka would probably not survive.
Minami: Would stand there screaming until she gets stabbed.
Kirara: Same deal as Erika.
Towa: She’s a fire cure. Fire often works against these guys. But they have no compulsion about attacking someone while she’s preparing her drawn-out attack sequence, and the extreme impracticality of her outfit could end up killing her. It’s around 50/50 for Towa.
Mirai: Would last 20 minutes if she’s lucky. She’s probably the one who read the creepy old book out loud and released the demon/monster/whatever.
Riko: Has enough knowledge of the supernatural to know how to defeat the thing Mirai summoned. Is targeted as a result. Eventually dies directly after a jumpscare. Is brought back to life by Kotoha.
Kotoha: She’s a literal goddess and she’s got the strongest magic of anyone ever. She will survive without question.
Ichika: Hate to say this, but she would probably not survive. *begins sobbing at the thought of my precious daughter dying in a horror movie*
Himari: Would also probably die. But would last for far longer than Ichika.
Aoi: Would power through an otherwise fatal injury and somehow survive something that definitely should have killed her, because she needs to write a song about this.
Yukari: Old enough to drive. Smart enough to check the back seat.
Akira: Sits in the passenger seat as the two floor it. Checks under the car for villains while Yukari is watching her back.
Ciel: Switches to fairy form and flies so high the villains can’t get her.
Pikario: Gets run over by Yukari and Akira.
Hana: Survives the first half of the movie. Dies when she runs upstairs instead of outside.
Saaya: She spent an entire night just watching horror movies once and now she knows everything about how to survive them. Makes it out alive.
Homare: Survives
Emiru: Is hiding in a security bunker
Ruru: Is hiding with Emiru
Hikaru: She’s really into cryptids and occult stuff, so she knows their weaknesses, and survives the whole movie as a result. Probably hits on the monster at least once.
Lala: Runs right into her spaceship and gets TF out of there.
Elena: Holds out for a good amount of time. Then her phone rings while she’s hiding.
Madoka: Made it onto the spaceship with Lala.
Yuni: Uses her shapeshifting perfume to disguise herself as a corpse version of herself. Successfully tricks the bad guy into thinking she’s dead.
Nodoka: Passes out, dies first.
Chiyu: Survives
Hinata: Would not survive. She’s too much of a hot mess to last in a horror movie.
Asumi: Would die if she remained untransformed. If she transformed, she would survive hands-down.
