Going back over a draft of something I wrote ages ago, and it is both shocking and hilarious to realise I gave Main Character a praise kink years before I even knew what that was - I mean, the phrase ‘he’d crawl over broken glass to hear someone say he’d done a good job’ is right there on the page. I’ve been rewriting this thing thinking ‘oh MC’s coming across as pretty subby, I should flesh that out a bit more’ and it turns out I’d already done that years ago. I’m not sure if this is what more established writers mean when they talk about themes revealing themselves, but I’ll take the win.

Daily Writing Challenge: Day 2 (February 2024 - Feb 19)

An artist’s life was a journey of practice, observance and experimentation. The most passionate were often only ever students, as there were always more techniques to learn and ways to grow in skill. Roselyn was one such passionate painter pulled by inspiration in the moment; the petals of a particular bush were tinged a particular hue she had never seen before in its kind. In a mad rush she was setting up her new easel and equipment at a random river bank in the Span, crushing the petals into oblivion to test out its fresh remnants on the canvas. 

Just as she was freeing her favorite painting brush from her carpenter bag, she nearly jumped at the sound of a heavy snort; a vorquin mare and her young was in approach, much closer than Rose had anticipated. She slowed her own movements to a crawl just as her father had instilled in her since she was a girl, suppressing her own excitement at being so close to the wildlife. Rose had not been on the Dragon Isles long, and every sight had been a wonder, and someone always seemed to be tempting the artist’s eye to explore it. It was also in her conservator nature to not disturb a potential scene she wanted to study. Rose noted the beautiful pastel blue-violet shade mottling the mother’s shimmery coat, studied the way she moved, equine like. If vorquin were anything like the homeland’s wild horses or deer she knew, or even the magical dreamrunners she had been lucky to once observe, they were likely skittish and very protective of their young.

Naturally, Rose had to do a double-take when the vorquin mare watched her lanquidly for a passing moment, then made the conscious choice to lay down in complete comfort, right next to her easel. No food set as a lure, no basic animalistic wariness, especially for her young. “Right then…” Rose murmured with a whisper of a chuckle. “Mum’s tired…” The vorquin foal took the opportunity to explore the foreign equipment of course, and eventually, Rose’s feet. She fought the desire to reach out and boop the little snout, or even chance at pulling the adorable little thing into her lap for a pet. She certainly didn’t want to risk ruining the scene and break the sudden show of trust from the mare by crossing a boundary. And she certainly didn’t want to bring down the rage of a possible fire-breathing horse-dragon thing bringing harm to her setup. The art easel had been a rare gift. 

“Guess I’ll watch him for bit, mum,” she whispered with a little grin, gently mixing an ink alongside her pastel hue to begin her lines of the vorquin on the canvas. Her gaze paused on the inquisitive little foal, who was now nuzzling into her carpenter bag.  “Don’t eat my brushes, Lil’ Bit.”

Like that, over there! There, growing on that host oak tree-- I studied mistletoe for a while a long time ago, you see! When people adopted those ideas of kissing under a bunch in the doorway... and eating the berries. Mhm. An interesting decision, made by the English-speaking world.

But! But when they grow on oak trees, it wards off evil and brings much great fortune! This oak becomes a sacred tree, you see!! Even if, yes, this mistletoe is a parasite. A blessing and a curse! One that earnt the mistletoe the nickname of “the vampire plant”. A “baleful” plant, as Shakespeare once said! Yes, yes, I am supposedly surrounded by these vampires, even in the trees. And I expected to kiss under this one? 

Hm. Okay.

jason todd falling in love with someone from the perspective of the other batfamily members has got to be the funniest thing ever, because he's not going to tell them anything about his personal life so easily, which is going to lead them to greatly misunderstand everything. so while jason’s giggling and kicking his feet while imagining his future wedding with his crush, his family is immediately calling john constantine to exorcise the demon that is clearly possessing him.

watching the valeria interrogation again and when alejandro says, “you disgrace the army”, rudy steps forward but when alejandro looks over his shoulder at him and says, “and your brothers, no?” he steps back again, almost like he’s trying to pull himself out of the conversation

alejandro leans in close to her and rudy reacts like he wants to pull him away, to protect him from her and from her words, but when he brings up that valeria hurt him too, betrayed him too, rudy retreats like he doesn't want to be reminded of it

it's alejandro who keeps valeria talking about the past, who prompts her to say more when simply saying she's ex-military would've been enough. they bait each other, valeria far more successfully than alejandro; she’s essentially running the interrogation

this speaks volumes of rudy’s interjection of, “he (the son of la areña) was supposed to go to prison”. he’s getting short; cutting off valeria and her excuses, not to redirect them back to the point of the interrogation but bc he’s done with her. rudy’s terser with her, more obviously angry, than he is with an actual terrorist

alejandro can't get past their history; let's himself get pulled off track and compromised but not be he's more upset than rudy. rudy has just repressed the hell out of it; if he doesn't think about it then it didn't happen

but now, he's suddenly being confronted with it head on

"you disgrace the army," is generalised; valeria didn't just hurt rudy, she hurt all of them. it's easier to take

"and your brothers," calls rudy out directly for his pain; pain alejandro wants retribution for and he doesn't want to face it, doesn't want to admit to it bc he doesn’t want to have to feel it
