Tuesday, November 28 -- Around the World in 30 Days: Write 10 headcanons for the location where your character is from! If your character is from a place where other characters are from, you can either collaborate with them to post a mutual headcanon list or just make sure to get their approval before you post.
10 Headcanons About San Diego, California!
While Los Angeles is home to the California Grand Prix, San Diego has a robust Magick Grand Prix program as well. Its beaches and cliffs are sought-after training grounds for athletes who want to improve their abilities on different terrains.
The Louise Nash Memorial School of Racing (known as LNM) is one of the most prestigious Magick Grand Prix training programs in the country, right behind the LA Grand Prix Junior Academy (Lightning only participated briefly, though, when he was trying to get scouted— he had personal trainers for most of his life). It's located in San Diego and named after one of the sport's most highly-regarded champions.
While the city is generally pretty accepting of magic, Magicks tend to be viewed differently based on whether or not their ability is useful, flashy, or "cool." This somewhat has to do with the city's historical ties to Magick Grand Prix, but it's also just due to the city never having a particularly strong Magick identity in the same way as Los Angeles or San Diego.
The San Diego Zoo once had a manticore who had been enchanted to look like a normal lion— everyone was surprised when the charm wore off and the lying sorcerer who had sold it to the zoo was impossible to track down! No one knows what their motivation was, but some speculate it was a vindictive young person trying to imprison an enemy. (The manticore was falsely named Alex the Lion)
San Diego Comic Con has recently begun to allow magical creations in the annual cosplay contest, albeit in a separate category. This has sparked some controversy, drawing criticism from both pro-Magick and anti-Magick groups.
A mysterious castle that very much does not fit the vibe of the surrounding architecture sits on an island in Mission Bay, rumored to be home to vampires (possibly those who brought Magick Grand Prix to California in the first place). This isn't confirmed, but boats that approach the castle it do tend to capsize (or disappear entirely). People have only been known to emerge in the month of June... known to Californians as the "June Gloom" period.
Mermaids have been spotted in the Ocean Beach tide pools... but it was during Comic Con, so it could have been cosplayers... Still, merm hunters have been known to prowl the area ever since the incident. (All these people are wrong— the merpeople hang out at Alligator Rock!)
It has become increasingly more dangerous to be a werewolf in San Diego, as coyote sightings have increased over the years and people are on the lookout— which also means unsuspecting Mundus can't always tell the difference between werewolves and coyotes, and will sometimes react violently or call authorities.
San Diego does not have a large sorcery community, but there is one somewhat-established coven of elemental sorcerers (mostly water specialties) on Coronado Island. The coven was originally all weather-specialty sorcerers who would band together to help ships ensure safe passage to the harbor, but with advancing technology and changing times, the group has expanded in its purpose.
Every year, the San Diego Padres have a themed Magick Community night! It usually features Magick Grand Prix athletes. One time, Lightning McQueen threw the first pitch! (No, the MLB does not allow Magick athletes!)

True. But the question is does he do that out of privacy or because he wants to keep the relationship on the down low due to how it began? He knows people (press) would look into the beginnings if he gave them an opening and started talking about her. So he rather doesn't talk about her at all which sets a precedent. /
I think it's a bit of everything you said, he wants to maintain privacy and doesn't want to say a word too many otherwise people get strange ideas about his current relationship compared to the previous ones and he also does it so as not to receive criticism about his life as he is known to be a musician and not for gossip.
About his life or his relationship habits? Nobody ever questioned anything about his life, only about his girlfriends. Remember the journalist asking him about Taylor fighting with fans in her comments? I think that's where he drew the decision from not to talk about his girlfriends at all anymore. Because then he would have to answer to their behaviour and I'm sure that's not something he wants to do with the current relationship either because of how it started but also because of Louise's past actions. It would be highly embarrassing for Alex when the press finds out that he's dating an Alexa cosplayer with racist tendencies and a flop album.

I feel pretty gay for having all these girl toys and justifying it. Louise was the only pop vinyl figure I’ve ever wanted cause it looks good for a pop and I got into Bob’s Burgers because of my teacher ANDI got it at my first ever comic con where I had so much fun meeting ric Flair, booker T, tom kenny and several great cosplayers
The Supergirl one is  from a poorly handled DC cartoon block. The design is so cute and a baller figure so I had to get it when I found it at a Six Flags for 15 bucks after searching for it in vain for a year.
The marvel one is because Rebeltaxi99 has given me a greater love for the goth aesthitic that was always inside me from the early 2000′s and it was 16 bucks.
The two sailor moon ones are just really pretty and i’m a sucker for good color combinations so I bought them despite never seeing the show.
And the two TTG figuires were just really well made and It’s not like I could find them easily since I was at Toys r’ us for they’r %30 off “going out of business” sale. I don’t even like TTG’s over saturation but I won’t deny it’s one of the best cartoons on CN and has maintained a consistant quality and artstyle which is more than I can say for they’re other shows. I really like Raven and Starfires designs and I can just pretend it’s stylized OG Teen Titans merchandice I bought for 10 bucks each.

Day 2 of Baltimore Comic Con was going to be a long one!
Saturday also happened to be “Batman Day” and stars from the FOX TV show Gotham were on hand to celebrate with fans! David Mazouz (Bruce Wayne) and Sean Pertwee (Alfred Pennyworth) signed autographs and took pictures with fans, as well as participated in a Q&A panel later in the day!
With a few hours to kill, I walked the con floor browsing the seemingly endless rows of vendors. Their was a great mix of comics, magazines, graphic novels, action figures, vintage video games, high end collectibles, original art, t-shirts, Toon Tumblers, Pop Vinyls, arts and crafts, and if you ever wanted to have a figurine of yourself, well you could get that done too!
The first panel I took in, “Story Structure” featured an all-star line-up. Join James Tynion IV, Marv Wolfman, Louise Simonson, Robert Greenberger, Eliott S. Maggin, and Mark Waid as they talk shop!
I stuck around to see the next panel,”DC Comics: My Secret Origin: How I Broke Into Comics” featuring Justin Jordan, Alisa Kwitney, Dan DiDio, and a lucky fan!
Break time!
I walked the lobby area getting pics of all the great cosplayers that were in attendance!

Next up the “Baltimore Celebrates Batman Day” panel with John Timms, Peter J. Tomasi, James Tynion IV, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Amanda Conner.
Back to the con floor to pick up some Baltimore Exclusive Harley Quinn Toon Tumblers before I head out.
After a quick change of clothes I was on my way to attend the very first annual Ringo Awards!

Karl Kesel/Tom Grummett Panel Recap!
by @donsparrow
Last month I had the enormous privilege of moderating a panel at 2017’s SaskExpo, a Comics and Pop Culture Convention in Canada.  This panel was a spotlight on the work of two of the show’s biggest creator guests, Tom Grummett and Karl Kesel, who are no doubt familiar to regular readers of the blog.  Here’s the questions I asked, and what I remember of the responses.  Should a full transcript become available, I’ll definitely share it with you.  Overall the panel went well.  I’m sure we would have liked a larger crowd (we were scheduled opposite a panel featuring the great John Rhys-Davies!) but it was certainly a blast on my end.
1. What did you do before comics?  Tell me about getting that first comic gig.
Tom made a very important distinction when answering this one, clarifying that he always made comics, they just weren’t published (or at least not by a major company) which was good to remember—even if no one is paying you, always be making comics.  Both Karl and Tom worked in printing and design while working on their samples, and in Karl’s case in particular, it was his persistence (having moved to New York to be closer to comics publishers) that got him the gig at the start, more than his raw talent.
2. Influences. Since I’m here moderating a panel with two of my heroes, I was curious who your creative heroes were growing up—in comics and outside of comics.
The big name that came up with both Karl and Tom was unsurprising:  Jack Kirby.  Tom singled out Kirby’s DC work as his entry into comics, while Karl was entranced by the Fantastic Four.
3. The past few years have seen an explosion in superhero films and television shows, including the Doomsday storyline being touched on in Batman v Superman, or a live action Flash taking on King Shark in multiple episodes.  What is it like seeing something you created on-screen?
With a laugh, both men had to admit they hadn’t seen King Shark on The Flash, as they are not regular viewers of the show, nor did they see Batman v Superman, but they did appreciate that these characters are reaching new audiences.
4. Karl, how was it joining the super-team full-time?  Having inked John Byrne and done those great Newsboy Legion backups, was it like coming home, or were you nervous fitting into the rotating framework that had been up and running for so long?
Karl said that it was a bit of both—he had been a regular reader of the Superman books, and the chance to step in was an attractive challenge.  He then praised the unique storytelling of that era, pointing out that each team had their strengths—Dan Jurgens excelled at action and big picture ideas, Roger Stern was great at character and at finding a satisfying ending to a story.  Louise Simonson was all about heart and emotion, and so, through his strengths, and by default, Karl and Tom’s Adventures became the more light-hearted, sometimes comedic book.  He also said that the transition was pretty seamless and painless, in part because it was such a well-oiled machine by that time.
5. As you may or may not already know, I co-write a weirdly obsessive blog covering your time on the Superman books, and my co-writer on that blog, Max, is from Chile.  When I mentioned I’d be moderating this panel, he wanted me to ask you: by any chance, did ever read the old Spanish translations of the Silver Age Superboy comics? Because, in those comics Lana Lang's name was (for some reason) translated as "Lina Luna". "Luna" of course means "Moon", so Max had wondered if Tana Moon's name was a reference to that.
This was a fun one.  Karl replied with a flat “no” that he hadn’t read any Spanish language translations of any comics, but when I explained the Tana Moon/Lana Lang connection, he thought that it was a very cool coincidence, and then, jokingly, answered that, yes, it had all been planned, intentionally.
6. How do you feel about the industry as a whole?  Of course we hear the stories of sales declines, but we’re also in a time where comics can be a lot more democratic—properties like Section Zero can be brought back through the fans directly by crowdfunding.  In that way, is this not a time of unique opportunity as a creator?
Both creators were very optimistic about the industry, stating that comic sales have always gone up and down, and that there have been scares about the longevity of the medium for as long as they’ve been reading comics.  They also agreed that the ability to connect directly with audiences was an exciting element unique to today’s comics, and that Section Zero is viable with only a few thousand patrons, all passionate about the project, which is different than when it first came out.   Karl detailed that, since the project was creator owned, it also meant that there was no money up-front—the initial issues had to be fronted by the creative teams.  Karl explained that his financial situation changed when he went through a divorce, and so he could no longer afford a comic without a guaranteed paycheck.  But now, through crowdfunding, Karl and Tom are able to pay their bills as they work on completing the project, eliminating the need to put their finances on hold as they had to the first time around.
7. Having worked alongside so many fellow greats in the industry, how did you decide on the lineup for the pinups and extra features in the revival of Section Zero?  And for those here who haven’t heard about it, could you let us know how Mike Weiringo ended up as one of the artists?
The first part of this question, Karl candidly said that he was going with artists that had a large social media following, since online marketing was the main way the Section Zero project would be funded.  He then got into detail about trying to honour Mike Weiringo’s memory, which was previously shared here.
8. Karl, your run writing Daredevil stands out for being a return to the original wittier, lighthearted version of the character.  Does humour still have a place in comics today?
Karl comedically answered with another flat “yes”.  Then pausing, before elaborating that the great thing about comics is the diversity of tone, and comics should always feel fun.
Tumblr media
At this point I started to worry that I was asking too many questions, so we might not get to the audience, so I opened up to the floor for questions.  I was surprised by the first one, which was
“What is Section Zero?” (which I had thought we had covered pretty extensively in the earlier part of the panel) at which point they explained the elevator pitch, which is “X-Files if it was written by Jack Kirby”.  And, honestly, who wouldn’t want to try a comic with that pedigree?
The next question was a funny one, from a local purveyor of comics.  In an earlier answer, Karl detailed that his divorce contributed to Section Zero stopping production.  The questioner pointed out that the Gorilla Press line itself (of which Section Zero was a part) crumbled not long after that, before making the comment “that must have been some divorce”.
Over laughter, Karl explained, without assigning blame or much detail, that the Gorilla Press funding never came through in the way it was supposed to, and so similar problems arose for each of the other creative teams, of not being able to afford to front the production of the books on the hopes of later sales.  That exhausted the audience questions, so back to mine:
9. Tom, have any of Karl’s scripts contained something so tricky to draw that you wanted to say “Karl, you’re an artist—you should know better!”
Tom was very complimentary in his answer, saying that Karl’s art background made him a great writer, and so he never took issue with anything he had to draw.  Karl echoed this, saying that for whatever reason, he and Tom had always clicked creatively in a very natural way, and that Tom’s design sense made often surpassed what Karl envisioned for the page.  They talked about specific characters from Section Zero, one of whom Karl credited Tom for having wholly created, who quickly became one of Karl’s favorites in the series.
10.  Given the cyclical nature of comics, is it ever frustrating when changes in continuity “erase” a storyline or fact you worked on?  Specifically I was thinking  of the lineage of the Conner Kent Superboy, who was originally a clone of both Superman and Westfield, but was later retconned to be the clone of Superman and Luthor.
Karl was very diplomatic and generous in his answer, stating that Geoff Johns’ idea of having Lex Luthor be revealed as Kon-El’s donor/father was a stroke of genius, and added a lot to the mythology.  I agreed, but also pointed out how hotly this topic was debated on this very blog, which surprised the panel.  Karl said that for the most part, he didn’t create these characters, either, and so he understood that each writer or artist that follows will make changes to suit the times, and that those changes can be what makes comics exciting.  He hinted at elements behind the scenes, leading me to believe that even Westfield wasn’t Karl’s first choice for Superboy’s lineage, but that at the time DC editorial was very protective of Superman as a character, and so Superboy couldn’t be a straight up clone, according to their edict.
Tom mentioned elements like the Matrix Supergirl, and echoed Karl’s answer, saying that changes to continuity doesn’t magically erase the comics in your long boxes, they’re still there, with characters waiting to be discovered, or perhaps even used by coming generations of readers or creators.
At this point Tom related a story Karl had told him, of Karl meeting a cosplayer at a convention who was dressed as the Kon-El Superboy.  The cosplayer explained that they had found an old Superboy comic in a dollar bin, never having heard of this version of the character, and fell in love with the story, enough to both dress up as this character, and seek Karl out to thank him for his work.
(Then I pointed out that my own four year old son had picked Kon-El Superboy as his Halloween costume this year!)
Karl also touched on current comics, saying that he understood the appeal of the new Superboy being the son of Superman, and was at peace and enjoying that storyline, knowing that Kon-El would probably come back someday.
11. Any other projects you’d like to bring back, maybe via crowdfunding?  I was pretty keen on The Power Company, myself.
Tom and Karl were very clear that for them, the perfect vehicle was, for the present, only Section Zero, and that they had enough stories cooked up to continue with further installments for years to come.
I ended the panel by thanking Tom and Karl for a lifetime of great comics, and for personally inspiring so much of my interest in the artform and the characters, which they laughed at, taking mock umbrage at the “lifetime” part, protesting that they are very much alive, and that there are many more years of comics to come.
After the panel, both creators were very kind and seemed to have enjoyed taking part.  I was busy at my own table for the rest of the show, so I didn’t have much of a chance to hang with the guys and bother them with my weird, way too specific questions about Superman.  But I want to thank Saskatoon Expo for allowing me to moderate, and of course, Tom and Karl for being such great subjects and creators.  It was a real thrill.

⛄️☂️✌️❦
⛄️ - tall/short?
I’m very very tall! Okay, not that tall, but like 5′9.
☂ - favorite season?
I like the fall, because the temperatures are comfortable and also Halloween! As a cosplayer and just a general lover of spooky things (despite my crippling anxiety and fear of physcolognical horror), Halloween is my favorite time of the year!
❦ - fave characters?
So many! I have another link (the same link) you can go to, but I’ll also tell you some too! I love Holtzmann, of course, and every other Kate character ever. Louise Belcher from Bob’s Burgers is also a favorite of mine. And from Doctor Who, I love River Song, Missy, and Bill Potts. I love Rosa Diaz and Jake Peralta from Brooklyn 99. Wonder Woman, the Diana Princess of Themyscira, of course! And there are so many Marvel characters I love that I don’t know where to begin! Deadpool, Spiderman, Star Lord, Nebula, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and he’s not my favorite (yet) but I’m particularly excited to see Cable and how that goes in the new Deadpool movie. Might have to cosplay him. Look how badass he looks!

Would you ever cosplay your favorite character?
Oooh, good question!
Maybe? I mean, I would love to do it, I just am not very talented at sewing and crafts and things like that. So if I did cosplay I would probably go as a character that had a pretty simple outfit like Louise, or Dipper, or maybe even Meryl if I was feeling bold.
Cosplayers are amazing man, I wish I could put together an outfit like Masamune’s or The Wardens or something like that. They are all so talented!
So, cosplaying might be in my future! I’ll have to think about it.

13 of the absolute coolest family Halloween costume ideas right now from Moana to Guardians to Avocado Toast.
Tumblr media
I’m so excited to look for cool family Halloween costumes this year! We’ve moved past the babywearing costumes stage now that my son is old enough to trick-or-treat, but he’s young enough to accept pretty much whatever costume I dress him, and there is a very short window during which that will be the case!
And OMG, have I found some truly amazing family Halloween costumes ideas out there. From a flight of frappuccinos to all the necessary elements of very 2010s avocado toast, to someone of my most favorite ensemble movie and TV casts like Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Wars, Game of Thrones, even Bob’s Burger.
Whether you’ve got one or two kids or a whole big brood, I hope these group costume ideas inspire. Because family that trick-or-treats together…has way better odds of getting more Reese’s cups . Let’s be real.

Starbucks family Halloween costume via Costume Works
If you’re an extra-caffeinated family, I love this frappuccino trio family Halloween costume, including Grande, Venti, and Tall (well, not that tall.) Extra props to this dad for really committing to this role with color-coordinated tights and a tulle puff of latte foam on his head.
Coco family Halloween costume photo via David Ngo / @DTJAAAM on Instagram
I’m only un poco loco for this Coco-inspired Day of the Dead costume set from brilliant cosplayers Sam LeStrange/@deceptology, Carmen V Estrada/@carmenvalentina, and @alittleandroid who show us the most amazing Hector, Miguel and Frida, shot by cosplayer and photographer David Ngo. If the statement you want to make with your costume, is Remember Me, take a cue from their perfect makeup (you can get a closer look at it here), authentic props, and wonderful details like those skeleton arm gloves.
PS The three of them joined up to make one heck of a group Hocus Pocus costume this year, in time for the film’s 25th anniversary. Check all of their feeds for tons of inspiration, including Disney characters galore.
Guardians of the Galaxy family Halloween costume at Sugar Bee Crafts
If this Guardians of the Galaxy group costume for a big family doesn’t make you want to blast the Guardians of the Galaxy mixtape and dance, I don’t know what will. I especially love that a Gamora costume is so simple for a busy mom — it’s mostly about the green face, hair color, and leather jacket. Check out some simple tips for pulling this together on her site.
Fair warning though: you will be giving you children even more license to run around the house screaming, “I am Groot!”
Star Wars The Force Awakens family Halloween costume at Popsugar
I love how Pop Sugar shows how simple it can be to recreate The Force Awakens characters with a combo of DIY and store-bought supplies. And you don’t have to stay true to any particular episode by the way — want to mix Lando, Darth Maul, Po, Luke Skywalker, and Rose Tico (#TeamKellyMarieTran!) then go for it. Though we wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve got a kid who insists on being Kylo Ren. There’s one in every family, ha.
Alice in Wonderland family Halloween costume idea at Coolest Homemade Costumes
How perfect is this miniature Alice in Wonderland? If you want to turn it into a family Halloween costume affair, go Tim Burton style with a dark Mad Hatter and a Cheshire Cat who’s all about the face paint. Try saving time by using a store bought Alice costume, then raiding your local thrift store for the perfect Wonderland accessories.

Bob’s Burgers family Halloween costume via Imgur
If you have young kids, there’s a good chance your kids have no idea what Bob’s Burgers even is. But has that ever stopped an ambitious cosplaying family? No! Look closely at the details and you’ll realize this is a surprisingly accessible idea — Tina and Linda are mostly about the glasses and the hair, Bob gets the short-order cook treatment and dig up those bunny ears from Easter for Louise and you’re set! .
Game of Thrones family Halloween costume at Barefoot Blonde
We’ve still got to wait until 2019 for the next season, but that won’t stop die-hard fans for keeping the fantasy alive with a family Game of Thrones costume. I think it’s brilliant that Amber’s family used store-bought (and frankly terrifying) dragon costumes for the kids, and put their energy into their own Daenerys and Drago getups.  (And can someone please tell me where Daenerys is getting her hair extensions these days?!)
But if you want to be a little more Season 7, that Drago could always be a Jon Snow or a Grey Worm — especially if Dad doesn’t have the arms and abs that David does here. Whoa.
Avocado toast group Halloween costume at Hello, Wonderful
For my fellow millennial parents, I present: the reason we don’t own homes, *cough*. I mean…this super cute avocado toast family Halloween costume, from Hello Wonderful, where we always find so many of our favorite DIY ideas of all kinds. She even offers individual DIY posts for making all of the components, including that adorable (and protein-packed!) egg.  I think this also makes a great pregnancy costume for a mom-to-be who wants to showcase her bump as the avocado pit. So clever.
Moana family Halloween costume (We haven’t found the source for this picture, but please let us know if you do so we can credit you!)
If your family’s the type to voyage far behind the reef in search of good candy, a Moana family costume is a great choice this year. Especially if you’ve got a kid in the right age range to play couldn’t-be-cuter toddler Moana. Or if you have kids of different ages, they can play her in all her stages, from baby to self-saving princess.
Stranger Things group Halloween costume at Homemade Mimi
What really makes this Stranger Things family costume is the role reversal here, with Dad playing Season 1 Eleven, and the kids playing her favorite snack.(Although we’re all glad El ate a slightly more balanced diet in season 2.) Check her site for a two-minute video on how she put this all together, because the results are bitchin’.
80s rock band family Halloween costume at Design Improvised
I’m so thankful for this last-minute-friendly idea from Design Improvised, which comes together with a few 80s homage pieces — or perhaps actual 80s-era clothes for some of us — and a couple of props. In fact she pulled the whole look together for all four of them for under $75, and we bet the girls will wear those pieces again. May I suggest getting dressed while listening to The Bangles for extra inspiration?
DIY space family group Halloween costume at Tell Love and Party
Sometimes, a winning family Halloween costume is less about something no one’s ever done before, and more about doing it in a totally remarkable, Instagram-ready way. I’m so blown away by the attention to detail in this space family costume set, from the space boots to the metallic lipstick. Even her makeup is super cool, and the site has tons of pictures and really detailed instructions to help you out. Get your silver spray cans ready though — she used four of them, total!
Picasso family Halloween costume at The House that Lars Built
Last year I was toting an infant around on Halloween, so I had to include at least one babywearing costume that caters to mama — or dads — and their babe. The House that Lars Built is mindblowingly creative with costume ideas every year, and this Picasso is no exception, with the baby in a simple Picasso get-up, and mom as the cubist artwork. Just know you need to be good at face painting for this one! I am worried that my own skills might unintentionally turn out more like Munch’s “The Scream” — but hey, that’s what’s cool about babies. You can be like, “oh hey, now you’re Edvard Munch instead of Picasso!” and they’d be like, “no worries!”

About Louise's cosplays.. I don't know how Alex manages to have sex with that woman😂 Does he imagines his old partners in her place or what? 🤡 How does that works.
