Trick And Treating!
How does Haldir/Reader & crunchy leaves sound?
Sounds good to me, anon! (Also, here you have my underexplained hc that leaves in Lothlorien do not crunch underfoot and instead behave very interestingly.)

Taking a deep breath, you feel the crisp autumnal air all around before turning to smile at Haldir. He’s staring at one of the trees around you, a yellow colour that will always look dull since you’ve seen the golden trees of Lothlórien. But there are also golden leaves on the ground, ever so slightly frosty and so.
Crunch.
The noise echoes through the air, and you let out a hum of satisfaction before hearing Haldir turn, his eyes strangely focused on the leaves. You step on two or three more before you realise what he’s gazing at, and turn to him, “Are you okay?”
“The leaves do not make this noise in Lothlórien.” He stares at one again, “I cannot decide how I feel about the sound.”
“Try it yourself.” You offer, taking his hand and dragging him to one. “I think it’s satisfying.”
Carefully positioning the leaf, he takes a second before stepping on it - the sound echoing neatly through the trees. There’s a moment of reflection then he turns to you, “I believe I enjoy it as well.”

Found this great LOTR charm bracelet while shopping at Hot Topic earlier!!! 😀 I had been wanting to get some LOTR/"Rings of Power" merch for a while besides my Funkos of the movie versions and the show's soundtrack being able to buy (also that we supposedly are going to get season 1 on DVD next year), and turns out there's an official jewelry line now for merch for the movies that's sold at Hot Topic and other stores online/in person at least in the US. Not sure about other countries. What I loved about this charm bracelet and why I got it is that each charm also can relate to the characters on "Rings of Power" too. The charms are Gandalf's staff, Aragon/Elendil's sword, the leaf from Galadriel's realm of Lothlorien she gives the Fellowship on their cloaks, Sauron's One Ring, an elf bow/arrow for Legolos & Arondir (and others), and Gimli's ax which fits Durin IV and the other dwarves. Plus, for us Haladriel shippers I love that the charms for Galadriel and Sauron are next to each other. So for me this bracelet fits all adaptations of LOTR that I'm a fan of.

Lest I drown in the negativity, here are some things I like about the new Elf update:
The new eye textures. The colors are softer but not less intense, and the slight speckling in them look a bit like stars reflected in them, which is a really neat touch.
The hair. The hair was implemented a lot more smoothly than with humans, probably in part due to learned lessons from when they did it with humans. The new styles are nice, the textures are better (I hope they update the textures on human hair to match) and while there is still a bit of vasoline hair going on it's a lot better than it is with humans. Hopefully a good sign of things to come.
The hair decorations. I love that you can customize these now. It's a bit limited now, I hope they'll add other options, like maybe a single leaf, but fun nonetheless. I probably won't use these all the time on my elves, but for events you'd dress up for it's perfect. Also one of my main elves is from Lothlorien and the other is from Mirkwood so the green and gold leaves are perfect for them.
The ears. I was hoping for an ear length slider, but there are a lot of length options in the new ear options. I like that some of them look very much like goblin ears. That's a very nice nod to the origin of goblins and the kinship between the two races.

It turned into something bigger Somewhere in the haze, got a sense I'd been betrayed Your finger on my hair pin triggers - The Great War (Taylor Swift)
The messengers from Imladris and Lothlorien returned fast and with news that was better than the King and Queen had dared to hope. Elrond, Celebrían, Celeborn and Galadriel were on their way. With their armies. Ana could have wept for joy that they would not need to face this threat alone. She had gone over their potential strategies again and again and again, consulting old maps of Amon Lanc, reports from scouting parties, reimmersing herself in battle strategies employed by their enemy. Thranduil was in awe. He had known for quite some time that his wife had been the mind behind some of their most successful assaults on Mordor during the Dagor Dagorlad, but seeing her in action was something entirely different.
The other four elven leaders arrived two days before the agreed-upon date of the attack for some last preparations. In Celebrían’s case, it entailed wrangling the twins, as well as Legolas, Elrond was examining the body of the elven soldier who had been turned into an orc and killed by Queen Anarríma. Celeborn, Galadriel, Ana and Thranduil busied themselves with the upcoming battle. The Lord of Lorien was beaming with pride. His daughter’s strategy was perfect. Their first evening together was celebrated with a family dinner full of laughter and joy. Legolas was beyond excited to have his cousins around and they spent the better part of the evening chasing each other around the halls.
The night before the battle looked different. Everyone was silent and withdrew to their private quarters immediately after dinner. Ana and Thranduil tucked Legolas into bed together that night, wanting to spend every last second with their son. “Nana, Ada?” the little elf asked hesitantly. “Yes, my little leaf?” The Queen sat down on the bed. “Why do you have to go?” Anarríma choked back her tears, and Thranduil sighed deeply. She felt his nails digging into her shoulders. He took over. “Ion-nin, that is a very complicated thing to explain, but we are doing this to protect our people. As King and Queen that is our duty. You will understand it one day.”
When Legolas had finally fallen asleep, Thranduil and Anarríma went to bed, lying next to each other, staring at the ceiling. Her hand found his. “Whatever happens tomorrow-” “Don’t.” Thranduil could not bear to hear it. They would outnumber the orcs. They would win. They had to. “Whatever happens tomorrow,” she tried again, “I love you.” “Please stop,” his voice was shaking. ‘Whatever happens tomorrow, I love you, my son.’ Those had been Oropher’s words the night before his death. The Elvenking was afraid. He could not bear to lose her. His Queen, his wife, the mother of his child.
Neither of them wanted to sleep, so they spent the night exchanging kisses and softly whispered words of love, chatting about entirely unimportant matters. It did not matter what they talked about, they just talked. Anarríma laid her head on her husband’s chest, letting Thranduil play with her hair and enjoying the vibrations of his chest caused by his voice as he told her of his childhood in Doriath, the first time he and Celeborn got drunk, of the day Celeborn first saw Galadriel and knew that he loved her, of Lúthien Tinúviel and her mortal lover, and many other things. In return, she told him about the few memories she had of Gondolin, of her happy childhood in Lorien, the time of the war against Sauron before they met and the battles they had never talked about before. The night passed too quickly.
They got up again before the sun had fully risen, eating a quick breakfast before getting ready for another war. Breakfast was quiet, no one knew what to say, so they just sat in uncomfortable silence. The Queen would have given anything to spend this morning with the soldiers instead. She found her mind going back to the mornings before important battles during the war against Sauron, sitting on the floor of a large tent together with her father and his soldiers, the tension so high it could have cut Mithril, until one of them, an elf who had fought in the War of Wrath made a joke. Anarríma could not recall the joke, but she would always remember the relief she felt when the tent filled with laughter. One look over at her father, who was sitting across from her told her that in his mind, he was there as well.
Fastening the straps of her bracers felt a bit like meeting an old friend and catching up, the Queen realized to her horror. She had not worn a full set of armour since the war. Thranduil was lounging comfortably on a chaise. She had promised to let him braid her hair for her and he was holding her to that promise. Ana smiled to herself as she sat down on the floor in front of him. Thranduil was horrible when it came to braiding hair. It always took him an insane amount of time and the braids often looked messy, even when he did it on her. With his own hair, the King was even more hopeless, hence he kept it loose. Anarríma winced slightly when his fingers tugged on a strand of hair a bit too harshly.
“Goheno nin,” Thranduil chuckled nervously, “and thank you. For putting up with me.” Ana reached up to put her hand on his thigh. “You are getting better at this. Give it another millennium or two.” The King grinned smugly. “Well, I think I did a pretty decent job this time.” Ana got up and walked to the mirror. Decent was an understatement. The two braids over her ears looked perfect and felt secure, as did the long fishtail braid he had created with the rest of her hair. “Thranduil!” Ana turned around and threw her arms around his neck. “How?” “I’ve been secretly practising on our son,” he admitted. Ana hid her laughter. “Thranduil, how could you? The poor child!” “Don’t worry,” he held up his hand in defence, “I bribed him with sweets and he was a very willing test subject.” Ana shook her head in disbelief. “We should finish getting dressed.”
“There’s one last thing missing,” Thranduil said, when Ana stood there, in her full armour, all her weapons secured. She looked at him expectantly as he set a box down on her vanity, taking off the lid to reveal the crown of dragon scales, gleaming in the candlelight like thousands of stars. “I killed a dragon for you, Ana. Let this serve as a reminder that whatever beast we encounter today, I will slay for you as well.” She bowed slightly, letting him put the crown on her head. Ana needn’t have bowed, Thranduil was much taller than her anyway, but at that moment, it felt right to bow to him. He might be her husband, but he was also her King.
Soldiers, servants and courtiers alike bowed and curtsied deeply as their King and Queen walked by, armed and ready for battle. Many had risen early to say their goodbyes, Celebrían among them. “I never understood how you can be comfortable in such a thing.” The Lady of Imladris gestured all over her sister’s ornate armour. Anarríma rolled her eyes. “It’s not designed for comfort, Brí, it’s supposed to protect me.” “By Eru, I hope it does,” Celebrían murmured and hugged her sister tightly.
“Shall we?” Galadriel and Celeborn emerged, armed to their teeth. Try as she might, the Lady of Imladris could not tell who of the four bore the most weapons, each of them carrying multiple blades openly. “Elrond is waiting outside already. Come back to me. All of you,” Celebrían instructed, hugging each of them for a moment longer than expected. “After all,” she continued, “my daughter will need her grandparents and aunt and uncle.” Ana could not believe it. Her sister was pregnant. Again. After a moment of shock, they congratulated her and Galadriel scolded her for dropping such big news on them when they were already running late, but Celebrían merely laughed and sent them off.
The armies advanced through the forest quietly and efficiently. It was almost muscle memory for all of them. Every single soldier who joined them had also fought in the Dagor Dagorlad. None had been keen to fight in another battle, but in the end, all of them had volunteered to keep their kingdoms safe. The journey was smooth and they effortlessly took out any orc scouting troops they came close to. Ana had predicted their general locations almost flawlessly. The armies got into position, surrounding Dol Guldur, remaining hidden in the trees. The King and Queen were no fools. They were well aware that the orcs knew of their coming. The only thing left to do was lure them out.
They looked every bit the warriors they were as they walked over the bridge. Thranduil offered Anarríma his arm as if he were escorting her to a ball. She gracefully accepted. They were halfway across the bridge when the enemy appeared before them. Three orcs, each looking more cruel than the other. “Do you have a death wish, elves?” one of them snarled. “We come to negotiate the terms of surrender,” Thranduil offered politely. The sound of laughter carried far into the forest. “Giving up your forest so easily, elfling?” Thranduil felt Ana’s grip on his arm tighten. His wife was angry. “Get out of this forest or by Eru, I swear we will destroy you.” Thranduil had never heard his wife speak like this. If he were the orc, he would run.
The orc grinned maliciously. “Do you really think we are not prepared? Do you really think we don’t know that you brought the Witch of Loríen and the Half-Elf with you? Maybe you should be the ones to run.” Thranduil shrugged. “I guess that concludes negotiations.” He raised his arm, signalling to his army. The three orcs fell to the ground, dead. The archers of Lasgalen were renowned for their skill. Their army advanced and the orcs started appearing out of nowhere. The King and Queen shared one last look before letting go of each other and drawing their swords. And then there was chaos.
Thranduil and Ana stayed together as long as possible but ended up being driven apart. Thranduil remained where the fighting was thickest, while Ana took her forces to more remote locations, watchtowers, dungeons, hidden passageways to try and drive the enemy towards them. She caught a glimpse of Thranduil when she looked out of a window, dead orcs littering the ground surrounding him. Galadriel and Celeborn had joined him. Galadriel met her daughter’s eyes for just a moment before refocusing her attention on the fighting.
Anarríma continued her raid of the ruins, rounding corner after corner at breakneck speed. She had reached the most remote part of Dol Guldur. The Queen was on her own now, she had left her soldiers behind to deal with the orcs. Something spurred her on, telling her to climb the tower. Her feet were moving of their own volition, carrying her up and up and up the winding staircase. The thought of returning to her soldiers crossed her mind, but was swiftly replaced by the compulsion to climb the stairs. As she walked by another window, she thought that she should go back outside and fight side by side with Thranduil, but when she was about to turn around and walk back down, she could not. Dread filled her entire body as she realized that there was only one way she could go. Up. She took a deep breath and walked up the last flight of stairs, sword clutched tightly and ready to strike as she entered the room at the top of the tower.
“Queen of Lasgalen,” a whisper arose around her. “At last, you have come to me.” She whipped around, trying to locate the source, but she was alone. Trap, it was a trap. She never should have come here. Ana sprinted towards the exit but was blocked by a wall of black smoke. “No escape. Not for you.” The voice was taunting her. “Show yourself, coward,” she demanded, willing her voice to be steady. “As you wish.” The black smoke took shape. It stood before there, towering over her, sword drawn, but Anarríma could feel that it did not need a blade. Whatever the being before her was, it could kill her with half a thought. It was merely toying with its prey.

elf designs -- click for detail. this is a redraw and i shall not post the original lol. lore under the cut.
so a long time ago when i was ironing out my design for legolas, i ended up doing rough sketches for some clothing variations among cultures of elves encountered in lotr. mostly so i would have an idea of how to make my character designs visually distinct -- i do this a lot. anyway, putting aside for a moment the obvious noldor vs sindar vs nandor divisions, we encounter three main groups of elves in lotr -- the silvan elves of mirkwood/eryn lasgalen, the galadhrim of lothlorien, and elrond's host in rivendell. i wanted designs of what amounted to an "average citizen" of each of these communities -- this is what i came up with!
mirkwood elves were artistically influenced by grecian and egyptian styles. i use circular shapes and emblems for jewelry, and try to give them a more rustic look. Their garments are simpler, employing ties and pins to achieve certain shapes instead of tailoring. due to their ancestry, most have dark hair, though thranduil, the ruler of the realm as of the third age, had golden hair, and tauriel, the elf added in the hobbit movies, has reddish hair. i try to mix it up.
lothlorien elves -- their garb is more ceremonial in appearance, including tailored seams and fine jewelry. i give them light hair, usually. Due to their isolation, i style their garments as more traditionally ‘elvish’, with elements inspired by the natural world: petal and leaf shaped skirts and sleeves.
since the elves of rivendell have more interactions with the outside world and cultures of men than the silvan elves, i gave them a less elvish and more “modern” appearance, featuring elements of design from renaissance fashion, particularly the richness of fabric, the heavy decorative elements, the slashing of sleeves, and the headdresses. Though they retain elvish sensibilities and silhouettes, i made them out to be more in alignment with the traditions of men, to reflect the lord of rivendell’s half-elven heritage and their close political relationship with gondor. i tend to give them dark hair to align them with elrond and arwen.
apologies to actual tolkien nerds. i havent even read the silm LOL

☀ when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer: either share a piece of good news or something you're looking forward to.
There, a nice short ask for you! ^_^
🥔 I'm dining with Frodo (and maybe Sam if he's around, because you know he'd be a great cook). I feel like we'd have plenty of things to discuss and we could discuss history and Elvish stories and make up poetry and sing songs. Yep, I'm daydreaming about this now.
🍃I don't think it's a surprise to say I want a sword. Imagine going off from Lothlorien on your quest and getting a First-or-Second Age sword from Galadriel herself! Although I would also be partial to receiving a vial of Earendil's light.
🌟What do you think? (Rivendell, it's Rivendell and always will be, I want to live in Rivendell so bad.)
🧂 listening to a good audiobook on the way to work (a thirty minute drive either way gives me a lot of time to get absorbed into a story). recently a good small joy for me has been playing LotRO at the end of the day. Also watching The Chosen on Sundays with my dad. I have a couple of hair clips and earrings I like that I think look really pretty on me and they make me feel fancy, so I've enjoyed that.
☕ I like coffee--I do enjoy tea, but I'm really picky because sometimes it really just tastes like hot water with a hint of leaf. I like flavor (so no black coffee for me, I have to have cream and sugar).
🌳Depends on what "creechurs/creatures(?)" means; if humanoid creatures, then the Elves are my favorite. If not, then...I like Huan. Talking dogs from Valinor just sound cool.
🕷The first orcs--the sheer body horror of twisted Elves having been tortured and corrupted into a form so adverse to what Eru Iluvatar created them to be is wonderfully terrifying. I enjoy those takes that rely on them being more or less like normal Elves, but just...to the left. Evil. Against anything good and warded off by beauty, the exact opposite to what Elves have been established to love. (Despite my misgivings about RoP, I really like what they did with Adar, he was a good idea.)
🔥?? Not sure. Feanor, maybe, just because it's unclear whether he's an antagonist or not. I think Sauron could have been more present in The Lord of the Rings, but Tolkien had a reason for not really showing him, so I can't call that 'bad' either. I've never really cared much for the 'antagonists' in Tolkien's works, simply because he's not that concerned with them as characters other than representations of evil corrupting good.
🗝 Maybe the Elfstone? I like the idea of this relic from the First Age being passed down to the Kings of Gondor in the Third Age, and I'd like to know what happened to it afterward. Also the maker of it is ambiguous, so it has a mysterious past.
🍲Glorfindel takes it back to Valinor and they throw it in the Void. It either becomes nothing or Feanor and his sons keep it out of reach of Morgoth until the Dagor Dagorath.
📕 There are....so many. But the one I thought of first was: “The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”
The one I thought of second was: "And he sang to them, now in the Elven-tongue, now in the speech of the West, until their hearts, wounded with sweet words, overflowed, and their joy was like swords, and they passed in thought out to regions where pain and delight flow together and tears are the very wine of blessedness."
👑 The hobbits would be great partiers!
🏔️ Aragorn would be a great companion—he’s climbed many mountains in his day. Maybe also Arwen, I just have a feeling she’d be a good traveling companion in hard times. She doesn’t appear much in the book but I get the sense that she’d be a loyal friend who looks after everyone.
🌋 There are so many bad takes I don’t even know. Character-wise? Russington. I can see the appeal, I get why people ship them, but also they are cousins. Actual Middle-earth centric? Maybe that the Valar are horrendous at their jobs and meddled too much/didn’t do enough. The Valar were working for the good of Middle-earth and, more importantly, to fulfill the plans of Eru Iluvatar, which I think is extremely importsnt to look at from Tolkien’s Christian POV. Of course people do have some valid criticisms, and fans can think whatever they want, I just think that sometimes I see people missing what Tolkien was trying to do (it’s something that took me years to come to terms with as well).
⚙️ I’d give Elrond medical science and bring HollersandHolmes’ AU to reality.
⛵ I don’t think so…
🦗 I’d take Legolas’ pair of knives. I’ve wanted them since I first watched the movies. They’re so elegant, so Elvish!
☀️ I’m pushing myself out of my comfort zone this year and trying to be such a more social person! I’m more confident than I was this time last year!

Contents of the tote bags :
Tumblr media
Instead of taking apart all of them, here's one, the only difference between tote bags are the colour choices. I made ten? of each. I can't remember any more.
In total I've made 22 cups, 10 Tote bags, 10 adventure books, 10 card packs, 10 standard health potions, with two superior health potions left over, 12 ornaments and 12 stockings.
Included on the tote bags is a set of dice, a fabric dice tray, and a leaf pin, kind of like a knock off lothlorien pin.
The stockings I made for family, along with a cup and an ornament for each person. Two of my aunts live in Halifax, so I need to send their cup and ornament up, if I have time in the new year I might make stockings as well but I don't have any fabric that matches what I used for the rest so I might do something else. But honestly that's me over planning again.

sneaks in and leaves a newly made notebook, along with some new pots of coloured inks - light green for Rivendell, gold for Lothlorien and almost a light crystal like blue for Gondolin. along with a note:
'Happy birthday old man, 'Ro and 'Dan '
/@amidst-snow-and-ice
@amidst-snow-and-ice
A smile came to Glorfindel's face when he saw the items sitting on his desk, and he laughed lightly at the wording of the note. He took the time to leaf through the notebook and admire the quality of inks he had been given. He decided to stow the treasure away safely for the moment before going in search of the twins.

Strider would reluctantly do his duty and fuck me as the heir to gondor without the light ever coming back to his eyes and that's exactly why I would slam him onto the leaf litter of lothlorien and cuddle him into the deep hours of the night
I think the reason so many LOTR ripoffs fail is because they make their Aragorn analogue the main character, when the entire point of Aragorn is that he’s “the person the villains think is the main character, but is Not.”
Aragorn seems like a traditional King Arthur style hero— he has huge Main Character Energy because he’s supported by destiny, by bloodline, by all these magic artifacts and prophecies, and etc etc. Frodo and Sam are Just Some Guys. Aragorn recognizes that Sauron understandably thinks he’s the main hero of this story ….and he pretends to believe it too, spending the entire series using himself as a diversion to prevent Sauron from seeing Frodo and Sam.
Aragorn’s whole thing is that knows he seems like the Main Hero of this legend to people who don’t know better —- but he also knows that he isn’t, and that his role is just to keep Sauron’s eye on him in order to protect the people around him.
And it works! Sauron is so fixated on defeating his Legendary Destined Archenemy with Extreme Main Character Energy that he completely overlooks the two ordinary little guys who were the real threat to him all along.
