Allied Nations War Council Trials
Part VI
Albert Strauss
After the bombshell that was Prince Jonas' revelation, how will we get back to the rest of the trials? Let's find out, next up on the stand is former Duke of Windslar, Albert Strauss.
Tsarina Ekaterina: "Mr. Strauss, before we begin, I want to offer my sincere condolences for the loss of your wife. She was a darling girl, and I know how much you loved each other. That kind of loss is always the most difficult, especially when it was so preventable. Those of us who knew her, grieve her with you." Mr. Strauss: "I... thank you, Ma'am. I appreciate your kind words." Tsarina Ekaterina: "That being said, I'm afraid we most proceed with the sentencing. Mr. Strauss, I understand that you pleaded guilty?" Mr. Strauss: "Yes, Ma'am." Tsarina Ekaterina: "Can you tell us why?" Mr. Strauss: "Because I am guilty. I did everything I am accused of, I followed every order handed to me by my father-in-law. I did it out of dedication to my wife and her family, for the future of our children, but nevertheless, I did do them." Tsarina Ekaterina: "Your humility in your written testimony moved us, Mr. Strauss, I have to admit. But we agree that you did indeed commit the crimes you are accused of. I yield the floor to Judge Mahoe."
Chief Lilah Mahoe: "Mr. Albert Strauss, for the crimes of occupying the sovereign, independant island nations of Sulani, for the subjugation of her free people, for the aiding and abetting criminal acts laid out by Emperor Victor, and for the deaths of Terry Harden, Earl of Culpepper, and Lord Malcolm Landgraab of Oasis Springs, this court finds you Guilty. You are sentenced to 20 years at Imperial Mountain Prison, with no possibility of parole. You are stripped of all titles you hold, have held, or may hold in the future, for you and your heirs. You are stripped of the custody of your children- Princess Emma Lofton-Strauss, and Princess Edaline Lofton-Strauss, who will be placed in the care of a qualified relative until they come of age." Mr. Strauss: "I can only offer my sincerest apologies, Chief Mahoe. Please, can I see them, one last time, before I go?" Tsarina Ekaterina: "I think we can allow that. You will be allowed a final one hour visit with your daughters before you are taken to the prison." Mr. Strauss: "Thank you, Ma'am. Thank you, judges." Tsarina Ekaterina: "You are dismissed, Mr. Strauss."
Another surprise! Albert Strauss was high up in the Windenburgian command, and yet only got 20 years instead of life. Maybe it was his contrition, and acceptance of the consequences of his actions that moved the judges to leniency?
Stay tuned for more coverage on the trials!

Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax of Discworld are the iconic old lady duo of all time, for many reasons. One of those reasons being that Nanny Ogg has had sex with countless men both within and outside marriage, and is still bragging about it as an old lady. And at the same time, Granny Weatherwax is explicitly a virgin (and possibly asexual) for all of her life and is proud of it. And that was both of their choices, and neither of them regret a thing. Sure, they make snide remarks at each other about it, but they make snide remarks at each other about everything. And as an extra bonus Magrat only sleeps with one man after she marries him and that is also considered perfectly alright. That's not even going into the fact that Nanny Ogg is both maternal and horny, that Granny Weatherwax is handsome but was never pretty, and that Magrat is idealistic and femme but also filled with violent rage. I just love them so much.

I can't remember if I've posted this before but my headcanon for a lot of why Vetinari shifts in his characterization as the Discworld series goes on is that he accidentally made himself the Anthropomorphic Personification of Ankh-Morpork itself. He's painted himself as synonymous with the city for so long that people have actually started to believe it, and that's fundamentally changed him as a result.
He starts out as a greedy, selfish bastard in TCoM because AM is entirely greedy and selfish at the time. There are no characters in that version of the city who actually care about anyone. Criminals go unchecked, the Watch is a corrupt and apathetic wreck, and the University is filled with backstabbing bastards. Then as the series goes on he solidifies into a cynical but selfless man who watches over a flawed city, but one that is improving as people like Carrot, William, and Ridcully start to inject some optimism and genuine moral principles into the mix. He becomes much more energetic and cheerful near the end of the series and I think it's because AM is becoming a more hospitable place with better infrastructure and a lot of good people working to make it better, partly due to Vetinari's own design.
With this in mind, the Havelock that we meet in Night Watch would be the "true" Havelock, uninfluenced by this self-made status as the voice of the city, and his progression through the series becomes a path of returning to that identity by shaping the city to reflect a measure of the idealism he once possessed.

I've seen the theory that Vimes, Vetinari, and Moist are a coven. Makes sense. So much of Vimes' character seems to reflect a lot of the 'headology' we see from Weatherwax and Tiffany Aching. But I don't think I've seen anyone talking about how witches form covens to keep other witches in check; to 'keep them from cackling' and going mad with power.
Time and time again, we see how important it is that Vimes, Moist, and Vetinari need other people to keep them in line. If it wasn't for Vetinari, Moist would revert back to his con-artist ways. And Vimes? How many books revolve around Vimes wanting to use his authority in ways he knows are unjust in order to solve a problem? Like with witches, being a police officer comes with knowing when not to exert power unnecessarily. Then there's Vetinari. Omg. Vetinari is sort of fascinating-- in some ways, you'd think he'd be the most likely to cackling. The man is a literal tyrant. But he and Vimes are always keeping the other in check-- basically always reminding the other not to step out of line.
I know that most of this boils down to Pratchett's own philosophies about human interaction. But, idk. I think with the coven theories it's just a cool idea I haven't seen discussed too much.

Sulani Liberated!
Allied forces land in Sulani and take back control from the NWE
Allied forces joined together for a joint invasion of the Sulani Islands, finally landing on Ohan'ali Island and taking control of Chieftain's Villa, arresting the Windenburgian forces found there.
Simsdom Imperial Naval forces led the charge and the evacuation of the notable prisoners from the Villa- the arrest of Empress Agathe, Albert Strauss, Duke of Windslar, Prince Eugene and his wife Princess Mathilda, and the custody of Princess Edaline.
Despite surprisingly limited resistance to the invasion, a few losses were sustained on both sides, notably- Commander Terry Harden of the Imperial Navy, Earl of Culpepper, and Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Landgraab of the Oasis Army, Lord Landgraab of Oasis Springs. Our condolences to their families.
(Left- Earl Culpepper. Right- Lord Landgraab)
Prisoners are being transported to Glimmerbrooke and direct governing power of Sulani will be handed back to the Chief and her council of Elders. Plans are already being made to return the Chief and her family to Sulani.
This marks the official end of Emperor Victor's usurpation of the Island Nations- with Selvadorada, Tartosa, and now Sulani finally being returned to independant sovereignty. This means that now the New Windenburgian Empire consists solely of Windenburg and Newcrest- a huge win for the Allied Forces.

Magrat Garlick is one of those characters who I didn't particularly like at first but really grew on me. She truly is the pathetic wet little meow meow. She spends 95% of every book getting criticized and trying to be something she's not. But that other 5%. Oh that 5%. In each book, she gets one badass scene, escalating with each book. First, she turns a door into a tree, something that impresses even Weatherwax. Then, she clocks a pair of snake-lady-monsters. And then, in Lords and Ladies, the piece de resistance: After spending the whole book worrying about how she's going to be a wife and a queen, her stress is topped off with an attack of otherworldly monsters, the elves. Magrat finds the armor of an old warrior queen (and experiences something described in my opinion suspiciously like gender euphoria), puts it on, and then starts carving a path through elves until she personally gets into a fist fight with their god-queen. She's a wet hen. She's a wet hen. She's a vixen in a corner. She's an angry mongoose. Her name was supposed to be Margaret but her mom was bad at spelling. She knows a spell to fill people's bones with hot lead. She is truly one of the characters of all time.

so we (and by we, i mean the very specific overlap of jews and nerds among whom i make my home) talk a lot about how tolkien's dwarves, in both the books and movies, were likely influenced by certain jewish stereotypes. obsessed with gold/wealth, secretive (especially about their language and religion), refugees from their ancestral home, portrayed with big, sometimes hooked, noses and interesting facial hair, and most specifically: the favourite little meow meows of one particular god, causing them to be shunned and persecuted by other races and creeds. this is likely unintentional, coming from the subconscious of tolkien in the same way orcs were "based on mongols" (ew colonialism) and activating subconscious biases/stereotypes in the people who designed the dwarves for the movies. it's subtext, albeit subtext that influenced the next eighty years of fantasy.
but what i don't see much discussion of is the fact that in terry pratchett's discworld, it's intentional. terry pratchett's dwarves are, more or less, jews.
carrot is a human adopted by dwarves, based on human standards. but within dwarf culture, he IS a dwarf. specifically, he has undergone specific rituals and memorised certain passages, making him LEGALLY a dwarf. this is basically how conversion works in judaism. indeed, as in judaism, it's considered rude to even mention that carrot is six feet tall and obviously wasn't born into the culture he has adopted.
the dwarves also have internal rifts - there are a group of 'orthodox' dwarves who consider the dwarves in ankh-morpork (who have adopted other customs and don't follow traditional roles) not to be dwarves at all, and don't recognise carrot as a dwarf for the same reason. they believe that the way to be a dwarf is to live in an all-dwarf community and follow their traditional rules, while other dwarves believe they need to change with the times and integrate (at least somewhat) with larger society. jewish as fuck.
there's also the interaction of dwarves with gender. when cherie comes out as female (which isn't a recognised gender by dwarvish society) she is ostracised for taking on the feminine roles common to other discworld races. however, she could never THINK of cutting off her beard, because she is still a dwarf. i see parallels with women in judaism taking on roles traditionally considered 'masculine' (e.g., as rabbis, wearing tallit and kippot) and the acceptance of queer people into jewish communities. there's lots of great discussion about cherie as a trans character on tumblr, btw.
finally, something that particularly strikes me is the line from carrot in tfe, where he says that the biggest dwarf city on the disc is ankh-morpork. obviously all diaspora communities can relate, but it's really something to know that new york is the city with the most jews in the world (960k to jerusalem's 570k. btw, 3rd is LA!).
i just love that, again, consciously or unconsciously, pratchett incorporated more positive elements of jewish culture into his portrayal of the dwarves.
