Truth lol. I really hope he ends up punching at least one of them after an insult to Penelope. It should be Fife. He just looks so punchable.

Francesca seems to have been upset or made uncomfortable by Lord Fife & the men he’s speaking to, and that’s why she was looking for a private moment away from them.
Knowing Fife, they were probably disparaging women or talking about them like they were merely decorative property. It’s possible they were even talking about Penelope Featherington and how Colin mocked her. We know his comments must come back to haunt him so this would be the perfect opportunity for his sister to hear about what he said and comment on how saying that was hurting her prospects this season.
You can notice Lord Debling is near Francesca when she sits under the tree here:
There room appears to have both summer and fall decor with Kate under an Autumn apple tree forest side and Penelope on the summer garden side.
Note the Greek key pattern on the dance floor and remember that A Midsummer Night’s Dream is based in an Athenian court and forest.
Penelope is wearing the same dress from the, “Goodnight Mr. Bridgerton,” clip we saw which took place in front of Danbury house. So this is likely taking place at Lady Danbury’s ball, the first ball of the season and its theme may be Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream.

The deleted scene is so funny like, I'm sorry, but some woman comes sauntering up to Colin like, "I bet you could take care of me." And Colin replies, "I think it's clear you can take care of yourself, now if you'll excuse me, I have some brooding to do about my future wife, who I love."
And fucking LEAVES lol.
And I'm sorry what do you MEAN Fife sent the woman over to "test" Colin, betting that he would cheat??? Why is Fife secretly a super villian but only to Colin and Penelope? And why didn't we see more of that?
#fife has some kind of beef with either Colin or Penelope and we will probably never know why#but it is extremely funny#the idea that Fife saw either Colin Bridgerton or Penelope Featherington one day and was just like “lifelong enemy acquired”#meanwhile Penelope barely thinks about him and Colin moved on from his toxic bachelor squad SO fast#fife in a super villian meeting#talking about how he can take Polin down#meanwhile everyone in his friend group is increasingly put off by this behavior#damn it now I want to write something about this#bridgerton#polin#Penelope Featherington#Colin Bridgerton#lord fife

Bridgerton: Toxic Masculinity, Loneliness & Disclosure
Bridgerton, S03E01, "Out of the Shadows"
Bridgerton, S03E04, "Old Friends"
I love these two scenes. There are the obvious and compelling parallels that point to the causal relationship between toxic masculinity and loneliness. And there are some other fun things going on too.
Eloise and Benedict's relationship is so wonderful to watch because of its apparent ease. As the second-born son and daughter personifying various shades of rebellion, they hold similar positions in the family. Eloise and Benedict understand each other.
On the other hand, Eloise and Colin's relationship is underrated in its inherent tension and their ability to clock each other and not let the other off the hook. Eloise and Colin see each other (even when they're trying to hide).
Which brings me to (the lack of) disclosure in each of these scenes:
When Colin tells Eloise, "A man cannot tell his secrets," he's trying to avoid revealing himself and his newly minted rake persona as fraudulent. This lack of disclosure is a betrayal of self, and Eloise can see right through it.
When he tells his friends, "A gentleman must keep some things to himself," he's trying to do the opposite. By not disclosing the information about his sexual encounters that they're salivating for, he's revealing himself to be the kind and sensitive person he's always been. He doesn't want to betray himself anymore.
In the second scene, he's striving for self-awareness and emotional intelligence. It's the bare minimum, but in Regency romance, this behaviour is exceptional (as in, the exception). More of this, please.

I was rewatching Season 2 and noticed this: Lord Fife watching Penelope run over to Eloise & Colin when the Ton arrived at Aubrey Hall. I love that Bridgerton focuses on these details. Perhaps the Featherington Ball is not the first time Fife has provoked Colin regarding his relationship with Penelope.

As much as I think Lord Debling is the sweetest bean, Shondaland shows all suffer from the same fatal flaw: too many characters.
I think that we could’ve still had the competing suitor storyline for Pen with Lord Fife, and I actually think that would have been a more interesting route to go with their characterizations. Lord Fife very clearly wouldn’t love Pen, but she wouldn’t have been looking for love, just someone who would give her privacy.
This would play right into Colin’s hero complex and the tension of his argument against the pairing being negligible to why she is pursuing it.
Add in a potential for Pen’s thinking Colin initial interest being rooted in that hero complex and “saving” her, then BAM, we get an added layer to the “I can take care of myself”/“then what good am I to you” from the part two trailer.
With recognition to the fact that Bridgerton is an ensemble show (and we like it that way, regardless of what some louder fans have to say when their favs aren’t front and center), there are definitely too many new minor characters introduced while others are completely discarded, leading to a constant cycling on throw away characters that have no purpose other than their specific plot points which, in turn, leads to a more superficial world with little consequence. Like, what happened to the twins trailing Cressida in previous seasons?
Anyway, I’m just babbling some thoughts.

thinking about the 'I would never court Penelope Featherington' scene again and how angry our fandom has been at Colin for it for the last two years and wondering. . .what exactly was he meant to say?
Lord Fife and his friends are *slimy*. They are gross. They have 0 respect for women. Fife isn't *Colin's* friend. Fife is *Anthony's* friend. Fife runs in Anthony's circles. Misogynistic circles with misogynistic language. Fife and Co. are out here saying the debutantes are only good for being 'wed, bed, and bred'. Fife is the one out here, well into his 30s and with an established title, fucking an 18 year woman raw on her first year out in the marriage mart with 0 intention to marry her. That is 10000% an act of violence in this society. And you *know* he's bragging about it. Hell, he was probably bragging about it right before he asked Colin about Penelope.
Colin's not in those circles. Colin has female friends. Colin respects his mother. Colin cares for his sisters. The worst thing Colin has EVER said about a woman was to call her 'cruel'.
So. . .what is Colin meant to say? "No, we're just friends" isn't going to fly for people like Fife. As IF he wouldn't reply with 'Yeah, suuuuuure, wink wink nudge nudge'. Thus ruining Penelope and fucking over her future completely. A lesser man than Colin would have let them think what they wanted, and that would have still ruined Penelope in their eyes. Silence? Incriminating.
And he doesn't want FIFE of all people to know about his close friendship with Penelope. Fife who has never once been seen respecting a woman. Fife who has never once viewed a woman as a person and not a sexual conquest. Penelope is a safe place for Colin. Is precious to him. He KNOWS that conversation could have destroyed her reputation.
People talk about how he 'ruined her prospects', but in actuality, Colin responding the way he did. . .likely SAVED her prospects. There was NOTHING he could have said except for a vehement refusal, completely shutting down the conversation, that would have spared her from their judgement and cruelty. Sure, they laughed, and maybe it was at Pen. Maybe it was at Colin. (frankly, how good of a twist would it be if they WERE laughing at Colin? Colin the 'green' boy back from his travels after being oh so gullible and getting lied to by his ex fiance? Anthony made fun of Colin for being a virgin, we think these men, all 10+ years older than him, wouldn't do the same?) But at least they didn't go 'yeah, I guess she's a ruined woman' about it, because that *would* have destroyed her reputation
We talk about how Colin could have worded it differently, but honestly?
I think he said the exact right thing in those circumstances
#polin#penelope featherington#colin bridgerton#bridgerton#lord fife#lord cho#fife and company are so gross to me i do NOT understand the narrative of fife just wanting pen for himself#she's a little too old for him at this point considering he's looking for his girlfriend on a playground don't you think?#sorry not sorry i will forever be a colin apologist#no but really what should he have said????#'oh yeah we're fucking six ways to sunday?'#'no she's just my friend'? - Fife doesn't believe for a MOMENT that a man can value a woman as a friend#colin is the best man in that entire bunch but somehow he's the one we've demonized?#make it make sense#and sure he should apologize for talking about her behind her back- but Penelope should also then apologize for the same#we talk a lot about him being 'knocked off the pedestal' but in reality we've put him on the highest pedestal possible#colin is a GOOD man#he is arguably the best man in the entire series#at least he's the man with the best intentions and the least harm#and so when he fucks up we feel it ten fold because he was already so good#but when gross dudes fuck up we just expect it of them and give them a pass#we expect colin to not only be better- but to be perfect#and he isn't he can't be#he didn't say it perfectly#but OBVIOUSLY his intentions in that scene aren't malicious#and it's not locker room talk either?#look at the optics: Colin is 22 being asked by these 30+ year old dudes 'sooooo are you boinking the girl'?#one season after his engagement blew up publicly#in the season where no one listens to his travel stories#the season after he was virgin shamed

We are getting Colin *my wife* Bridgerton!!
I am just waiting for a scene where Fife is being Fife about Penelope so Colin can tell him right where to stuff his head. I would quite enjoy a punch, too. You know Fife will be outrageously nasty and gross.
Just look at that dickface. It needs punching.
Puuuuunch it.

I often think that before Penelope heard Colin, something very significant happened. It’s possible that Lord Fife is actually Colin’s polar opposite. Colin is a well liked gentleman, he’s an excellent flirt but he has never crossed the line with a gently bred lady or attempted to take advantage of their innocence. Fife on the other hand is a rake without scruples, gentleman only in name. He has no problem seducing gently bred ladies, risking their ruin and it’s possible he just announced that he’s had Miss Goring to the group of men because he was drunk. Colin would normally avoid him but Fife is popular and where he goes, his friends go, and Colin plans to do whatever was necessary to get more patrons for Will Mondrich’s club. Colin feels he owes his friend for warning him about Lord Jack Featherington’s schemes. It was Colin’s intention to help Will’s business to succeed because Will is a good man working hard to change his life for the better to provide for his family and Colin likes him immensely. For Will’s sake, Colin was pretending not to loath Lord Fife who just risked Miss Goring’s ruin with his not-so-subtle bragging about having her in a closet and the scum had the nerve to laugh about how he convinced the lady it was an important part of the courting game.
Then Fife asked if Colin was playing the same game with the redhead. As if Colin would ever be so disrespectful to any lady, let alone Penelope. Penelope deserved far better than Fife’s idea of courting and so he adamantly denied that he would ever do that to her.

The petty bish in me is like "Wouldn't it just be FUN if Lord Fife is Colin's main competition in S3?"
Imagine him finding out Fife of all people is suddenly courting Penelope and Fife's like "Well, why do you think I asked if you were courting her?" with Pen next to him and Colin's just like

Does anyone else lowkey hope we eventually see Lord Fife and Cressida getting married because they got caught in a compromising position?
I don't need much. I'll be satisfied with a scene or two. I just want to see the train wreck that would be two of the bitchiest members of the ton tied together in matrimony.
