and then on the other hand he's this big kid with his trucker hat, and his backwards baseball caps, his dog, his playstation marathons with Street, and just casually inviting Tan and his mum out to dinner - like that is a normal thing to do among coworkers.

Gerald let Maria and Shadow spend time together. He saw that Shadow won't hurt her and he let them be friends. This is so important. He called them "kids" and also when he says "they want to take Shadow away from us" - he cared about Shadow too and realized that he is just a kid just like his granddaughter. Gerald was definitely a good grandpa and a good guy before Maria got killed.
