hey u know how mk only calls wukong by his title and never his name? and how wukong rarely if ever calls mk "mk," instead usually opting for "kid" or "bud?" and how both of those things are kind of representative of their relationship and how both of them care about each other a lot but they aren't honest with each other or with themselves about the other and how neither of them really wants to confront the fact that the other is a person with flaws and struggles? haha yeah <- normal <- lying about being normal
be glad i have been released from class now :) [narrator: she would later find herself late to her 2nd class while writing this]
so happy you have given me this excuse to talk about— i mean, yes! it is super normal to be thinking about this all the time and be comsumed by it and let me explain why:
i will start by going off on a tangent about names and labels and their narratove importance in stories because i love them and have a problem. (idk the word count here. viewer discretion is advized. i just wrote. it is long. beware)
In the Case of Names: a Sunburst Duo Essay
by Yours Truly <3
In the Case of Names in LMK: a Summary (please for the love of pete be a summary)
Ok, so, let me give y'all a quick overview (i failed. this is you're only warning. i failed, and this became a monster of an essay. run while you still have the chan—) of names in the literary sense. When studying novels and books and shit in your literature classes, you will notice that your professor might discuss the importance or ill-importance of characters' names in the story. For example: in the classic novel Fahrenheit 451, the protagonist's name is fucking Guy Montage to illustrate how he's just some fucking guy, a John Doe, a man stuck and complicit in the dystopian world.
You get me? No? Sorry, you want more examples? Fine then :3 let me introduce you to a story called Hard Times by Charles Dickens. It is an allegorical novel that criticized the utilitarian movement going on in dear old Great Britain in the 19th century thanks to the Industrial Revolution. Some fun characters were Johannes Bounderby and Thomas Gradgrind. Tell me, what images did you imagine when I gave you those names? Did you think of a bouncing ball for Bounderby? Were you imagining something square or maybe a mechanical grinder for Mr. Gradgrind?
Remarkable isn't it. The way choosing a name has on a reader/audience's perception of the character. Names are not just placeholders for a character. Names are the identity of that character. Names can establish their starting arc or their ending. Names can be visual in the sense that they invoke a strong idea of what a character might resemble or what themes they will present the audience with. Removing a character's name also removes their identity.
Remember that.
Anyway, I have talked enough about names in the general literary sense. Let us move on to LMK.
Given that this show is based off of Journey to the West (JTTW), many of the names of the antagonist are already provided, and their English translation is pretty literal (Demon Bull King, Lady Bone Demon, Red Son) with some exceptions (Jing & Yin, the Gold and Silver Demons), but their names all provide a description of what they are and how they should be viewed. Spider Queen is a spider demon and views herself as queen. Pretty solid characterization there. Lady Bone Demon, she's a bone demon and has enough rank to be considered a lady (or that could just be to ID that she is a woman but eh). Princess Iron Fan: she's a celestial princess and wields an iron fan. Got it? Good. These examples are simply here to show that a majority of the JTTW antagonists are still fulfilling their roles as antagonistic characters. What I mean is this: since "A Hero is Born," MK has been fighting against the Monkey King's old enemies from the JTTW book. It's like the moment MK inserted himself into the role of successor, the antagonist themselves were inserted to redo their old role of fighting the "Monkey King." It's almost as if nothing has changed beside the fact that their new op enemy is a "human" wielding the legendary staff.
[hmmmm, wait i actually never put this into words until now and it's fitting very well with the whole "MK's fight against Fate/the Narrative" but we'll just put a pin in that.]
However, when it comes to MK's friends (Pigsy, Tang, Sandy, Mei), they all share different names from their reincarnated/ancestral counterparts (Zhu Bajie, Tang Sangzang (they just give Tripitaka a last name lol), Sha Wujing, and Ao Lie). Their identity is separate, distinctive from who they are meant to reflect to the audience. (But look at how Tang still shares the same 1st name to the blessed monk, see how he's the one whose powers are the most similar, see how he being pulled into the direction of emulating the monk, see how much Tang fights it, see—)
Fascinating huh? But let us move on before I forget myself.
In the Case of MK's Names: a Paragraph (DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT GO OFF THE RAILS)
So, in the English version, there is a running gag about how MK's "real" name is long and complicated, and we don't actually know it. All we know is that MK switched it long before the pilot. And even before MK has that talk with Master Subodhi in s4ep7 (or 6? 8?), I would chuckle at how on the nose his name was. MK the Monkie Kid... how silly of the show writers....ahaha, what a funny little decision to make :)
Do we know why MK changed his name? Other than his original one being long, no. Do we know why MK specifically? We don't know. Maybe, in his fanboy brain for all things Monkey King, MK thought it would be cool to have a name that identified close to his idol. A name that identified with someone he wished to emulate and be as powerful as and felt so connected to. But what do I know? I am a mere local gal who feeds off of metas and theories and all things relating to my beloved sunburst duo.
Then, we have MK's many titles: Monkie Kid (IDs him as the new generations Monkey), Successor (IDs him as the one who will succeed Sun Wukong in both the title of Monkey King and power), Noodle Boy (pronounced "New-dle Boi and IDs as the boy who works in his surrogate/adopted dad's noodle shop), Delivery Boy (his actual job for the noodle shop), and last but not least, Harbinger of Chaos.
What makes a harbinger? What is chaos? What are their intentions? Are they good? Bad? Neutral?
So, I've already defined harbinger before and many others have as well, but to sum up: a harbinger is a being/person/thing that announced the coming of something be it good or bad but most of the time the focus is bad. A "Harbinger of Chaos" then, would be the one to announce the coming of Chaos™️ and the disruption of world order. Is this a bad thing? Well, the show presents it at the moment as so, but that doesn't mean it will be. Honestly, the show has shown order and fixed structures more in a bad light and promotes free will and choosing a destiny that fits you as the good thing 👀 (another thing to pin in the MK might to go war with Fate)
But now I have established MK's names and must shut up and move on before I no longer can.
In the Case of Sun Wukong's Names: some Paragraphs (STAY ON TARGET PLEASE)
I will admit that my knowledge of names in China is very low, and by low, I mean I know nothing (most of what I do know comes from asking friends and informational sites). So, let me begin this segment with an excerpt of Sun Wukong gaining his name from the book itself :) and break it down with my interpretation and how that is applied to LMK.
When the Patriarch heard this, he was secretly pleased, and said, “Well, evidently you have been created by Heaven and Earth. Get up and show me how you walk.” Snapping erect, the Monkey King scurried around a couple of times. The Patriarch laughed and said, “Though your features are not the most attractive, you do resemble a pignolia-eating monkey (husun). This gives me the idea of taking a surname for you from your appearance. I intended to call you by the name Hu. If I drop the animal radical from this word, what’s left is a compound made up of the two characters, gu and yue. Gu means aged and yue means female, but an aged female cannot reproduce. Therefore, it is better to give you the surname of Sun. If I drop the animal radical from this word, what we have left is the compound of zi and xi. Zi means a boy and xi means a baby, and that name exactly accords with the fundamental Doctrine of the Baby Boy. So your surname will be ‘Sun.’” When the Monkey King heard this, he was filled with delight. “Splendid! Splendid!” he cried, kowtowing, “At last I know my surname. May the master be even more gracious! Since I have received the surname, let me be given also a personal name..." ..."You will hence be given the religious name ‘Wake-to-the-Void’ (wukong). All right?” “Splendid! Splendid!” said the Monkey King, laughing. “Henceforth I shall be called Sun Wukong.”
What a fucking cutie <3
So, what can we gather from this excerpt? Sun Wukong just gained his official name. No longer is he a monkey with descriptive titles, no longer is he a monkey without a surname to be referred to as and respected for. He now has both a surname and a personal name. And while I don't fully understand everything Master Subodi listed when naming Sun Wukong, it is important to note the importance of it and how happy Wukong is to receiving it.
Before this, the book would simply refer to Wukong as Shihou (stone monkey) or the Handsome Monkey King. Both of these are descriptive titles that just inform you what Wukong is rather than who, just like with the other demons met in JTTW. But now, we get to know him as Sun Wukong, someone more than his titles and such. There's even an explanation in the preface how Wukong's own personal name has significant meaning or relation to Buddhism, but I won't get too much into that since my knowledge is of that is 0 and I want to try and stick to LMK.
Now then, let us examine Wukong's name in the LMK sense. Literally everyone in the show call him either Monkey King or "simian" (and if he really pissed them off, Sun Wukong). The only people to refer to Wukong by his personal name is Nezha, Macaque, and Peng. It is literally just these three. And while we could argue all say it like "Wukong (derogatory)," I believe Peng's the only one who means it. Meaning, I think Macaque says Wukong because he was the closest friend of SWK, thus that's the only name Macaque would ever call him (sure, he said Monkey King and shit in s1 but that was when he was duping MK soooooooo). Nezha calls him Wukong because after the whole Havoc in Heaven and journey stuff, he is the new oldest member to befriend Wukong and not be enemies with him (yes, he will get annoyed and aggravated by him, and he will not always believe Wukong's intentions are great, but he still cares and is his 2nd closests living friend).
Peng, on the other hand, does not give a shit. I fully believe that guy never cared for Wukong. They only joined the brotherhood because of Azure (they even offered for Azure to be the brotherhood's leader). I do not think Peng cares for formalities when it comes to people they dislike. We could argue that maybe Peng cared for Wukong in the beginning, but I do, honestly, not believe it. The only reason Peng even felt betrayed was because it messed up Azure's plan. Not because the two were sworn brothers.
But yeah, very few characters actually call Sun Wukong by his name, and when they do, it establishes not just how close they are/were, but also how long they've known each other. It's the same thing with how Wukong refers to others. He barely calls Pigsy, Tang, and Sandy by their names. He will give people nicknames and shit just to place a safe distance from them because of his own very unhealthy attachment issues.
In the Case of MK and SWK's Names for Each Other: the Actual Sunburst Duo Essay (you are free now.....)
Speaking of attachment issues, let's talk about the Sunburst Duo and how much these two need to sit down and talk.
So, we have discussed how names are integral to identifying a character's purpose, thematic journey, description. We have discussed how a person's title can clue in on certain characterization, present or future, and how they demonstrate the way others view them. Now let us apply this to our beloved sunburst duo.
As mentioned in your ask, @gumy-shark, both MK and Sun Wukong barely call each other by name (MK never has as far as I am aware, and SWK has done so only a few). It's "Monkey King" from MK and "kid," "bud," "buddy" from SWK. Rarely do the two ever think to say each other's name.
In the beginning, I originally thought MK only calls Wukong "Monkey King" as a way to be respectful, and with Wukong, I assumed he called MK "kid" simply because MK was very young to him. However, as we get into s3, and especially s4, MK and Wukong have grown a lot closer. Neither of them see each other as just a mentor or student but as friends. And yet, they cannot seem to stop calling each other by their title or nickname.
Thus, the distance is still there. S3 ends with Wukong promising to do better as a mentor and be more honest with MK, and we do seem him attempt this. He gives out more praises, he's more open about his feelings and then gets sucked into the memory scroll. But here's the kicker: the two are doing a reverse in their dynamic.
When it starts out, it is Monkey King who establishes the line between the two. He will simply be MK's mentor and teach him all the kid has to know in order to succeed him. MK is ecstatic to even be near SWK. This is his idol, the guy he's had a special interest in for years probably. He now gets to train under the Monkey King. He wants to do good. He wants to kickass. He wants to be just like him.
But as the story goes on, we see SWK open up to MK more and care for him deeply and want to protect him, and we see MK uncover the skeletons in SWK's closet and feel so alone and learn that the power he used to wish for is not what he expected. And in the aftermath of s3, it is now SWK who is opening up and trying to help kindle and safely guide their friendship in a healthier path(ish). It is SWK who is placing his own protege on a pedestal because "loook at him! isn't he so great and powerful! he will help this world a lot more than i did". It is SWK who is disregarding th original rules he placed. But now ,it is MK who is keeping the distance more than SWK. It is MK is trying to force some kind of distance. He feels like he shouldn't burden SWK with his doubts and worries. He is terrified of his own powers and their capabilities and worries his actions will make the same mistake as his mentor.
With s3 and s4, SWK has called MK by name quite a few times. Especially in s4. It's not a lot, but it's definitely more than before. And yet, MK cannot call Wukong by name. Personally, I think he might still feel like he's under Wukong's shadow. As his successor, there is a legacy that he will carry when Wukong actually retires and gives his title to MK (which is what I assume Wukong will do??? It is still unclear what exactly MK's succeeding SWK of). And that legacy is quite the burden. I would not be surprised that MK is unable to place himself as being worthy of taking Wukong's place just yet (if ever).
This guy was his idol for a long time. And with that, you tend to place a high pedestal for those people. MK has given Wukong such a high pedestal, and Wukong is very aware of it. It's why the guy even keeps his distance in the first place, and why he's scared to disappoint him. But, MK has learned so much, has been told of the tales and pain his mentor inflicted on others in the past (a past SWK greatly regrets), and yet cannot find it in himself to lower that pedestal or even allow himself to think about it. Because if he does, then he will have to acknowledge his own pain and his own disappointment in someone he not only admires but has come to love like family. And it is very hard to reckon with the hurt and pain caused by someone you consider family.
So yeah, they are silly monkeys who cannot communicate to save their life and need to just sit down and talk or else this will continue to boil and explode and we'll have a SWK and MK showdown (fuck yeah! i will be crying so hard).

The studio was warm in the coldest night of this Autumn, warm yellowish light and the red carpeted floor made it feel like a cosy log cabin. A full drum set with a few too many ride cymbals and windchimes sat close to the middle of the fat bare bricked wall, with a small metal bucket that had the remains of broken splinter drumsticks. A rack of guitars and two bass holders stood next to the right wall where an old armchair sits, a few different sized amps scattered round the square room. Right in front of the glass that separates the control room from the studio three mic stand in a line with noise cancelling boxes surrounding each of them.
In the control room there is a strong smell of weed and other smokeable herbs, "No! You can't take Runaway Blues off the album!" A man with short shoulder length brown hair and a moustache protested as he puffed on his cigarette as he lied back on the couch, his dark glasses fell back on his face as he tilted his head back. "I agree with Jake. It shows how good we are even when we're shit faced." The man with long curly hair, a gorgeous ethnic nose, stood up – towering over the other 4 people in the sesh – and began to roll another blunt on one of the control panels. The one that started this debated piped in, "Thanks Dan for taking my side." He said sarcastically, his curly mullet was like a solid cloud on his head, and he has a moustache like Jake. "We'll our wonderful manager and producer here," A man that looked like Jesus pointed to a woman that sat next to Jake on the couch. "Was the one that wasn't shit faced, I think that's why it was actually good, Joshua." He finished. "Hey, hey, I'm not saying it's shit because of you, please believe me y/n!" Josh dramatically pleaded to y/n. She was looking up at the ceiling. Pupils dilated. Blunt in hand. "Just, make it shorter." She said confidently, waving her hand a bit. Still not looking at anyone and head craned back. "You have the answer to everything." Danny said his mouth slightly gaped that such a simple solution didn't register in any of their minds. Or he's just on a psychedelic trip and can't spark up a brain cell.
The following week the band had dates in LA since they were still doing there 'Dreams in Gold' Tour. The band was already at the venue setting up, some still sleeping in the bus. Y/n had some business to attend to in their studio in New York before going down to LA. She decided to walk down the infamous Sunset Strip, as a historic music place like this could not go untrekked when having the chance. Wearing a black turtleneck, dark blue flare jeans with dark brown boots and a satchel bag hanging from her shoulder, a small suitcase's handle in the other hand while the silver case dragged its wheels on the floor. As she caught the sight of the colourful sign of The Rainbow, a voice called to her. "Y/n?" A older man, short blondish hair, leather jacket, sunglasses.
Axl Rose.
And like the trigger of a gun being pulled,
A life was lost.
(or misplaced)
Y/n's POV:
Everything stood still,
I stood still.
Then it all went dark. It was a black lifeless void.
Falling backwards but being physically still.
Time was reversing.
A previous life. My life?
Memories rolling past like an old film.
My head spiralled.
I can't comprehend this. What is happening to me?
My first years of school, late 60's early 70's. That's not right. It was the early 2000's.
Falling in love with music, Queen, Elton John.
Highschool was trip. My parents being stricter than anyone else's, they didn't believe I could have a job as in the music industry.
Studying music in college then going on the Uni and taking a science course to get my folks off my back.
One of my most successful record deals was Mötley Crüe and Bon Jovi.
Before they even started writing lyrics for their songs, I knew it off by heart and helped them gain success with it and recording went like dream.
Now I was searching the East Coast for a new band to sign.
March 1985, The City of Angels.
A flash of light, and my eyes flickered open.
It a cold night, dark but the city light was somewhat comforting.
It was the Sunset Strip, but something was...
Off.
------------
OMG SORRY IF IT'S SHIT
THIS WAS LIKE THE INTRODUCTION, FIRST PART IS COMING OUT SOON
IM SO EXCITED

Disability Showdown Full Bracket
Alright! No more mystery, we've got our list for the tournament!
For people new to this tournament, how this works is this: We narrowed our character list down from about 600 to 131 (it was gonna be 128 but we had three ties, so those have been reworked into three-character polls). The top 64 have been seeded into the bracket by number of nominations. The bottom 67 however, all got roughly the same amount of nominations, so those have been assigned places via random number generator, to remove any bias that I the poll runner may have about which characters I want to succeed
(I am so sorry if your obscure blorbo ends up against a super popular kid in round one, that's unfortunately the luck of the draw here, but I am keeping a record of characters that lose but whose fans fight the hardest for them, and we may do something with those kids later, so it's still worth campaigning for your faves!)
I will make an image for the bracket once we get past the first round or two, but right now I have no idea how to make a visual bracket containing 131 characters, upload it to tumblr, and still have it be at all useful
So for the first round, I'll just give the matchups by name, in a list under the cut. We'll be working through this list 8 polls at a time (my pinned post will stay updated with the current 8 once the tournament starts), and good luck everyone!

Jolly Rodger
JOLLY RODGER is a four-piece rock band of some small reputation thanks to frontman, co-founder, singer, sometimes songwriter, and networking expert Jack Rackham. Jack is joined by co-founder (ex-)girlfriend lyricist bassist Anne Bonny, guitarist Mark Read, and drummer John Silver*. Although the band hit a rough patch after the departure of Silver and the absence of Bonny, when Bonny returned to the band it steadily began to climb in popularity once more. The band continues to go strong today.
Or so Jack(ass) tells those that ask.
In reality, Anne, Mark, and Silver have long been the creative force behind the band. Though Jack sometimes contributes, it’s rarely for anything that doesn’t revolve around his vocal talents. Mark and Silver are musicals heavyweights, but have all the emotional sense of an upset teenager. Anne contributes where she can, in bass lines and lyrics for the most part. When the three come together, with or without Jack, it’s amazing!* The band is named JOLLY RODGER after both the pirate flag and to honor the memory of a now deceased mutual friend who actually brought the group together, their larger-than-life first drummer.
* Shut up, it’s my au and I’ll do as I please!
JOLLY RODGER serves as opening act for the Flying Gang, a much more famous rock band in the same genre. The tour is called the Queen Anne’s Revenge Tour, actually named for Anne. When Silver left JR, he joined TFG as their new drummer and ended up telling them a little bit about Anne from his own perspective. The conversation quickly became an impromptu songwriting session, ending with a new song for a new concept album called Queen Anne’s Revenge. In a twist of fate, Anne broke up with the band she’d co-founded the same day the album dropped. Anne went to ask Silver if she could crash at his since she was now, effectively, homeless. In a bid to keep her in work, Silver got Anne to agree to do the inevitable album tour, even going so far as to get her to agree to sing a few solo songs. That was huge. TGF’s record label was meanwhile contacting JR to get them signed on for that very same tour. Neither exactly knew what the other was up to until it was too late and worlds collided. It’s a very strange situation to be in.
Anne’s not handling her new fame well, and has come to resent Silver for telling the world her story before she could even tell it herself. She’s distanced herself from Mark, her self-admitted best friend, out of fear for his life. Jack believes to this day Anne was unfaithful with Mark, something that became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Anne and Mark only got together in the time between Anne leaving Jack and Anne leaving the band, a nebulous few weeks before Anne snapped and fucked off for Silver’s.
In applicable verses, this timeline is slightly altered, and represents the rise, fall, and recent reappearance of Red Death.
In my quest to find the perfect excuse for a spy story without having to tie Anne into an alphabet institution, I found a loophole that made me giggle in the persona of Red Death. Red Death is a singularly extraordinary individual, at once an expert hacker with extensive knowledge of several alphabet institutions, an enigmatic figure passing through high security spots without a trace, a brutal assassin, and a literary reference to Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Masque of Red Death”. Naturally, Red Death is a shared identity between a few people. By name, Mark Read and Anne Bonny. (Jack was never involved as more than an alibi, actually innocent in it all.) You can imagine what the new visibility on Anne is doing to her career as Red Death.

Freddie’s £10m rhapsody of hope for AIDS victims
World's biggest concert will pay for new hospital
ROCK LEGEND Freddie Mercury left a legacy of hope to thousands of fellow AIDS victims, it was revealed at the star-studded Wembley tribute to the Queen lead singer last night.
Guitarist Roger Taylor said a clinic for HIV and AlDS sufferers called the Freddie Mercury Hospital will be built in Britain from concert proceeds. Mercury died aged 45 last November after losing a long battle against AIDS. A large part of his fortune was donated to AIDS charities. It is expected that the total amount raised from last night's rock spectacular will top £10 million.
"This is something we feel strongly about and we are sure Freddie would approve," Taylor said.
“It's a means of using the tragedy to some good effect in bringing a greater awareness of the fact that AIDS affects all of us.”
Just before the show volunteers handed out red ribbons to fans, symbol of AIDS Awareness.
Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Liza Minnelli joined forces with the cream of pop and rock talent including DavidBowie, Elton John, George Michael and metal band Guns'n'Roses.
Supermodel Cindy Crawford, the 26-year-wife of actor Richard Gere, spoke of the courage of close friends who died from AIDS.
Global
"The more discussion there is about AIDS the more people can learn and everyone needs to help," she said.
The 72,000 fans at Wembley paid £25 or more a head.
It was also broadcast live and attracted a larger global audience than Live Aid, going out to a billion people.
Some fans fell prey to touts charging up to £250 for tickets.
Even so, hundreds of fans were prepared to fork out.
"I supported Freddie throughout his life and I will support him in death," said Steve Parkin, 22, who travelled from Liverpool with no ticket.
"He was the greatest and I couldn't miss a concert like this."
Jayne Browning from Sheffield said: "I came with £100 and I would be willing to spend all of that."
Protests
Guns'n'Roses were one of the surprise bands in the concert.
Four years ago lead singer Axl Rose wrote a song with the lyrics: "Immigrants and faggots spread disease".
Shows have been dogged by protests from gay rights activists ever since.
But Guns'n'Roses drummer Matt Sorum said the band would be using the concert to explain their behaviour towards gays.
"Axl has a few things to say about accusations about being homophobic," Sorum said.
"He's still getting flak from it."
Just before the show Axl seemed to be suffering stage fright.
He failed to turn up for rehearsals and missed a sound check, preferring to stay in his Mayfair hotel suite.
Liz Taylor presented George Michael with a brooch with red rhinestones set in silver in the shape of the AIDS symbol.
Then, in a speech half way through the concert, she urged the crowd to practise safe sex and use condoms.
"You are the future of our world, you are the best and brightest," she said.
Gay
"You are the shining light that will illuminate a better world tomorrow.
"Protect yourselves. Every time you have sex use a condom. Every single time.
"Straight sex, gay sex, bisexual sex — use a condom whoever you are.
"And if you use drugs, don't share the needle.
"Each day around the world 5,000 people are infected with HIV — the virus that causes AIDS.
"Just last week it was reported in the U.S. that there are 9,000 actual cases of AIDS among teenagers and young adults, with thousands more who probably don't even know they are infected.
"There are 72,000 people in this stadium tonight. Look at yourselves, look at how many you are.
"In two short weeks there will be as many new infections as there are people here tonight. Please don't let it happen to you."
She added: "We are here to celebrate the life of Freddie Mercury, an extraordinary rock star who rushed across our cultural landscape like a comet shooting across the sky.
"We are also here to tell the whole world that he, like others we have lost to AIDS, died before his time.
"The bright light of his talent still exhilarates us, even now that his life has been so cruelly extinguished.
"It needn't have happened. It shouldn't have happened. Please, let's not let it happen again.
"Protect yourself, love yourself, respect yourself, because I will keep telling you until you do.
"I won't give in and I won't giveup, because the world needs you to live."
At the show the stars poured out personal tributes to their dead friend.
Roger Taylor said: "This concert is primarily a celebration of and a tribute to our dear friend and colleague Freddie Mercury."
His Queen co-star Brian May added: "It seems inconceivable that we now have to do without Freddie.
Living
"This proud, vibrant, irreverent and passionately creative man surely cannot have been extinguished in the prime of his life.
"Freddie was denied the privilege of growing old but in 45 years he packed in enough living for a dozen lifetimes.
"A child of strict upbringing he was, when I met him some 25 years ago, an uncertain youth stepping into an unfamiliar world outside.
"But his head was full of great dreams and the certainty that they could be achieved.
"At the age of 20 he already lived the dream, and behaved with a gentle grandeur that demanded respect.
"He looked and acted like a million dollars, though he scarcely had the bus fare home.
"That never changed. Later, when his millions were safely in the bank, someone else always carried his purse.
"Perhaps in changing his name prior to our first record he decided to leave the fragile Frederick Bulsara at home under parental care and become the god Freddie Mercury."
Queen guitarist John Deacon said: "It's hard to imagine being here without Freddie. We will all miss him."
Elton John said: "Until a cure is found I won't rest. I've lost so many friends.
"I'm in my mid 40s and this is the time in life that instead of just planning everything around a career, you can try to do something else."
George Michael said: "Freddie Mercury was a great inspiration to me and I felt a genuine loss when he died.
"So this concert will be a strange mixture of honour and sadness.
"Hopefully it will also serve as one more opportunity to fight against AIDS.”

What are your lgbtq headcanons for nello and for near? To you what do they identify as?
unless the characters themselves are preoccupied with identity politics i usually don’t find it interesting to assign them labels – HOWYEVER, (borrowing from resident mello expert @firebuggg PhD, some excerpts of her lovely writing below) i love the idea that while mello was out in the world making a name for himself he was taken in and taken care of by all kinds of communities on the outskirts; sex workers, drag queens, queer bars, leather daddies, kink groups, etc. etc. all of which influenced his own self identification and gave him a strong sense of belonging in queer spaces :’)
Clubs and hostels and drag shows and winking red lights: Mello had been quick to discover that he was likely to find friends, shelter, a temporary landing place among them with few questions asked. (...) There were always people who were welcoming, especially the people already on the outskirts: Mello has slept backstage at drag shows and comedy clubs, has found shelter and companionship in dark alleys and clubs and amidst leather and small kitchens and hot, crowded rooms.
but labels wise, classic ol’ salt-of-the-earth slutty bisexual – i believe this may be an unpopular opinion? we all know he's gay asf but i think he’d also be into assertive older women (see: halle, minora. *whip noise*) this bad boy can fit SOO many mommy issues in him (specially in @firebuggg's and i’s headcanons/writing where he spent the first five-ish years of his life with his mother during the 90s yugoslav wars, but that's a whole other topic.)(i also think he’d be into mean switch4switch girls his age that are basically himself but girl gender. for obvious reasons.)
that said he'd drop the slut life in a heartbeat for near. like i can't explain this and i almost always write ships with semi-open relationships but. mello wants to be monogamous with the bug-eyed kid SOOO bad it makes him look STUPID
near likes. uuuuuuuuuh, mello. you can make any argument for any identity in a vacuum but in any universe where he grows up alongside mello his entire sexual awakening and formative puberty experiences are mortifyingly rewritten by years of getting bullied by what is essentially a mean but occasionally caring older brother figure. sorry. you fucked up a perfectly good teenage boy is what you did. look at him. he’s got a choking kink
i cannot imagine near caring for sexuality or gender labels (there's a whole other digression here about near's alienation from community/having no past/being racially ambiguous/john silver quote "i am no one. from nowhere. belonging to nothing." HURGH. but we don't have time to get into that)
BUT i do like to think that mello does his damnedest to take him out to gay bars in chelsea and the west village to experience ~the queer community~ but what actually happens is near starts philosophical discussions in a corner that keep going long after he slips out and often end in insane bar fights. (he also gets progressively freakier as he gets older) (long haired near is a public indecency arrest waiting to happen)(possibly the one to suggest experimenting with other people, together)(mello does not take this well)
adasdjasdjkasjksajkfdsjkfjksd this got long for someone who started with i don’t care about identity politics. and i don’t
#death note#meronia#unbelievably enbarrassing but mello and daisy would have THEE freakiest one night stand#this is not something i'm happy about and i don't care for canon/oc ships but some truths just simply have to be acknowledged#brothercrush.txt#inbox.txt

From The Little Book of Cycling.
It’s been a few weeks since I’ve contributed to our blog so I thought it was time I wrote something.
The last few weeks have been my out on several rides of different lengths including a circuit going past Wellington Monument to Culm Head before going passed Smeatharpe airfield to Dunkeswell. I then headed towards Culmstock, through Uffculme to Willand, Sampford Peverell, Uplowman, Huntsham ant the Staple Cross before retuning to Holcombe through Hockworthy. A ride of about forty-six miles which I completed in three and a half hours at an average speed of thirteen and a half miles an hour.
I have also completed several other rides as well as visiting the gym a few times to do some leg and back exercises.
Last week I had both the bikes serviced in Exeter, Bike No1 just needed a check over, but Bike No2 required some attention as it hadn’t had much done to it since I bought it about twelve years ago. It did give me the opportunity to cycle back from Exeter. Approaching Cullompton I was overtaken by a bunch of about ten keen cyclists, and I managed to tag onto the back go the group & cadge a lift to near Willand. I showed the benefits of slip-streaming, which I won’t have the benefit of during the challenge.
I also saw my Osteopath this week, I tend to go every three months, probably in a vain attempt to keep myself as fit as I can. She went through a number of exercises and stretches someone of my age should be doing when taking on a long cycle like this one.
With just a week left before we set off, I have several rides planned which will hopefully include a couple of longer routes and going out on consecutive days, I’m happy with my level of fitness so it’s now just about spending time on the bike.
Celeste our motorhome went in for a service and wash this week and I decided to go for a ride while I was waiting. I rode what will be part of the first day, leaving Wellington I climbed on to The Blackdown hills and on to Chard, through Winsham to Drimpton where I turned round and did it all in reverse. It’s fairly hilly but with some lovely countryside and pretty villages. The climb back on to The Blackdowns was tough but in all I rode 51 miles in about four hours which I was pleased with. Unfortunately, my phone went flat halfway through the ride, so I only managed to record part of the ride on Strava through which I monitor my performance.
I have to keep Jane and my cousin Heather musically happy during our time away so I have been buying CDs and downloading songs by the likes of ABBA, Lionel Richie, Whitney Houston and Coldplay to name a few. There may be times when I’m glad to be on my bike!
Heading into the final week before departure I have a couple of jobs to finish off on Celeste before packing her up ready for the off and of course we have our Fundraiser on Friday the 6th, The final Holcombe Rogus Pop Up Pub in the village hall so hopefully we will see you there.
Once we are on the challenge, there will be far fewer text blogs and more videos, pictures and interviews.
Thank you for your support and readership over the last few months. Your comments and support has really helped us to prepare for our journey.
As you know we are raising funds for Overcoming MS. If you would like to support this amazing charity which helps to improve the life of people with MS you can follow this link.

Death Before Dishonor preview
Mark Briscoe vs. Roderick Strong - Strong defeated Dalton Castle on July 13 to earn a shot at the ROH men's world championship. Briscoe has held the belt since April 5. Strong has lengthy history with Ring of Honor--including a world title reign in 2010-2011--but this will be his first match for the brand in eight years.
Strong signed with AEW last year, and since then his character has gone on a curious odyssey. During the Adam Cole/MJF storyline, he played the passive-aggressive whiner trying to break up the budding friendship. When Cole turned on MJF in December, the big twist was that Roddy was in on it from the start. Strong was positioned as the #2 man in Cole's Undisputed Kingdom, which was clearly positioned to be a killer main event heel faction. But since Adam is still rehabbing from an ankle injury, Roddy has effectively spent 2024 as the frontman for a goofy midcard heel faction.
At the same time, Mark Briscoe has come into his own as a singles act. AEW has given him more and more time on TV and on the microphone. I originally thought they put the title on Mark because he could be a full-time ROH guy, whereas Eddie Kingston had gotten so hot that they needed him to be on AEW as much as possible. Now I feel like Briscoe is as hot as Eddie ever was. Is now the time for Mark to drop the belt and move up to bigger and better things? Is now the time for the Undisputed Kingdom to be "demoted" to the minor league? It's hard to say.
If I seem to be focusing on the big picture, that's because the week-to-week storytelling for ROH is at an all-time low. Roddy won a match two weeks ago for this title shot. That is the entire story. I'm not even sure these two have appeared on-screen together since the match was announced, and what little narrative there is has been entirely on AEW programming. If there's going to be an effort to revitalize ROH, it'd sure be nice if it started tonight.
I could see this match going either way, but something tells me that the most interesting outcome would be a big angle to put the title on Strong.
Athena vs. Queen Aminata - Athena has been the ROH women's world champion for 594 days, and she's defending the title here. The key plot point in this story is that Athena claimed to have a knee injury and then unilaterally decided she would not defend the title or relinquish it. This didn't work, and she's being compelled to defend the belt; I haven't checked in lately to see if she's still acting like she can't compete.
Aminata has been on the warpath ever since Billie Starkz bamboozled her in their women's television title match on April 5. This led to Aminata and Red Velvet joining forces against Athena and Starkz, which somehow led to Aminata challenging...Athena? I mean, that's fine, but why wouldn't she want revenge on Billie first? So yeah, every time I think about this card, I have to double-check that it's really Athena-Aminata and Starkz-Velvet, and that I didn't get the challengers mixed up.
I keep thinking someday Athena is going to lose the title and return to the AEW roster with a big push as an unstoppable force. But I'm not thinking Aminata is the one to dethrone her. I like Aminata, and she'd be a cool champion. But I also remember how long she was a jobber until she got that All Elite graphic, so I guess I never expect her to get a big push. Athena retains again.
Marshall Von Erich & Ross Von Erich & Dustin Rhodes vs. Evil Uno & John Silver & Alex Reynolds - The winning team will qualify for a match on tomorrow's Battle of the Belts special, for the vacant ROH trios title.
You may recall that the AEW and ROH trios titles were unified on April 21. For whatever reason, Jay White & Austin Gunn & Colten Gunn continued to carry around both sets of belts (and a custom set of the AEW belts) for the next three months. When Jay was injured, the titles were vacated. A match on July 20 crowned new champions...but just for the AEW trios title. It looked like the ROH trios title was finally being retired...and then this match was announced five days later. So that's kind of weird.
Marshall and Ross are the sons of Kevin Von Erich, the sole survivor of the legendary Von Erich Brothers from the glory days of World Class Championship Wrestling in Dallas. AEW is running shows for the next six weeks down the road in Arlington. The Von Erichs famously dominated the World Class trios title, so I assume that's why Marshall and Ross aren't chasing the tag belts. The goal is clearly to get Von Erichs on as many of the Arlington shows as possible, so it would make no sense for them to lose now.
Billie Starkz vs. Red Velvet - Starkz is putting the ROH women's television title up for grabs. As noted, I am baffled this isn't a rematch against Queen Aminata. I suppose I wouldn't give Red much of a chance in a world title match, whereas a secondary title on the secondary brand seems more attainable. She has a pretty decent chance of winning, but I'm still going to pick Starkz to retain.
Atlantis Jr. vs. Lee Johnson vs. Lio Rush vs. Brian Cage vs. Shane Taylor vs. Johnny TV - Atlantis is defending the ROH men's television title in a six-way "survival of the fittest" match. If I remember correctly, that just means it's under elimination rules, so when one of the participants loses a fall, they have to leave and the match continues without them. The last man left after the other five are eliminated will win the match and the title.
Atlantis won the belt last month in Arena Mexico, as part of the growing relationship between AEW and CMLL. I don't expect him to hold the title very long before dropping it to someone with an AEW contract. But seeing as it's "just" an ROH midcard belt, they could easily leave it on him for 6-8 months, and I'm not sure anyone in the US would miss it. I'm also not sure any of the challengers in this match really need this championship. Honestly if all of these guys were paired off into feuds, where the winners inch closer to gunning for the world title, that would be so much more interesting for Ring of Honor. But instead we've just got another multi-man trainwreck match. I guess I'll pick Atlantis to retain.
Matt Taven & Mike Bennett vs. Tomohiro Ishii & Kyle O'Reilly - This is for the ROH tag team championship, which Taven and Bennett have held since December 27. Taven, Bennett, and Roderick Strong have been passive-aggressively trying to convince O'Reilly that they're his friend and he should join the Undisputed Kingdom. O'Reilly has instead aligned with Mark Briscoe and Orange Cassidy, and of late Ishii has been hanging out with their group.
This should be pretty fun since Taven and Bennett are at just the right level to potentially defeat Ishii, but also act mortally terrified of him for 80% of the match. That should create some good comedy spots, and O'Reilly has a knack for humorously reacting to good comedy spots. I could dig a title change here, but my gut says it's not going to happen.
Wheeler Yuta vs. Lee Moriarty - The ROH pure title is on the line, so the standard pure rules apply. These two went to a ten-minute draw on July 4, so now Moriarty gets a title shot. Yuta has dominated the ROH pure title over the past three years, but he hasn't defended the belt since January 3, due to an injury that sidelined him for about five months.
Under pure rules, the title can change hands via disqualification or count-out, and a 15-minute time limit draw will be decided by a panel of judges. Punches to the face are always illegal in pro wrestling, but under pure rules they're more illegal--you get two warnings and after that it's an instant DQ. You can only escape a hold by going out of bounds three times--after that, it won't save you. This is supposed to encourage the participants to focus on pure grappling instead of punching, cheating, and rope breaks. In practice, though, the wrestlers just end up trying to force each other to touch the ropes a lot. I'm sure Yuta and Moriarty can have a great match, but I'm also sure these rules will not enhance the match in any particular way.
I'd like to see a title change, but after a lengthy absence it's hard to tell what they have planned for Yuta, so this could go either way.
Leyla Hirsch vs. Diamante - This is billed as a Texas deathmatch. In AEW that amounts to a last man standing match--anything goes, and if you get knocked down you have until the count of ten to get up, or you lose. I've completely forgotten why these two have been feuding, but I guess nothing could settle it so here we are. I'd think the rules favor Diamante, but I guess Hirsch's ground game can still work even if there are thumbtacks and other junk strewn around the ring.
Since I expect both Athena and Billie Starkz to retain their titles tonight, they're both going to need fresh babyface challengers. So I guess I'll pick Hirsch to win here and move up the rankings.
Komander vs. The Beast Mortos - Komander is the AAA cruiserweight champion, but given the AEW-CMLL relationship I doubt he'll be defending the title, or that it will even be mentioned during the show. Mortos, formerly Black Taurus, is pretty cool as a big mean luchador, but he's mainly been used in AEW/ROH as a jobber, and I don't expect that to change here. Unless Komander is leaving AEW/ROH to stick with AAA, I figure he'll win this.
Mason Madden & Mansoor vs. ??? & ??? - This is scheduled for the pre-show. Madden and Mansoor were the Maximum Male Models in WWE, and now they're The MxM Collection," essentially with the same gimmick. From what I heard about the gimmick in WWE, it sounded pretty stupid, but they seem to have added more intentional irony to it. I'm hoping now they'll be more like Fandango and Tyler Breeze, and less like Lenny Lane and Lodi.
This is MxM's in-ring debut for ROH; their opponents have not yet been announced. Now, it'd be hilarious if the Motor City Machine Guns showed up, squashed MxM, and were like "Sike, we're not going to WWE!" But I wouldn't count on anything like that. Chances are the other team will be the Iron Savages, or some other expendable duo, and MxM will kick things off with a win.

Synaxis of the Icon of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos
Reading from the Synaxarion:
The great defender of the Orthodox Faith against the Iconoclasts, our righteous Father John of Damascus (See Dec. 4), was slandered to the Caliph of Damascus by the Iconoclast Emperor Leo the Isaurian (reigned 717-741). Saint John was accused of sedition and his right hand was cut off. Having asked for the severed hand, Saint John passed the night in great pain, praying for the aid of the most holy Theotokos. Awaking from sleep, he found that his hand had been miraculously restored, with only a red scar about the wrist where it had been severed, as a testimony to the wonderous healing. In thanksgiving, he had a silver hand attached to the icon to commemorate this great miracle. On becoming a monk in the lavra of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified in the Holy Land, John brought the icon with him. There it remained until the thirteenth century, when it was given to Saint Sabbas of Serbia (see Jan. 14), who brought it to Serbia, where it remained for a time. Later, it was miraculously trans ported by an unguided donkey that carried it to the Serbian Monastery of Hilandar on the Holy Mountain, Athos, where it remains to this day.
Apolytikion of Synaxis of the Icon of Most Holy Lady Theotokos in the Fourth Tone
From the Palestine, godly-minded Sabbas brought unto us thy ven'rable icon, which is known as Of the Three Hands, O all-holy Bride of God. Wherefore, since the monks of Hilandar now possess it as their boast, they send up hymns of praise and thanksgiving, while crying out with fervour: Rejoice, thou who art full of grace.
Kontakion of Synaxis of the Icon of Most Holy Lady Theotokos in the Plagal of the Fourth Tone
Come, let us worship the famed icon of the Queen of all called: Of the Three Hands, for the fearful marvel which it wrought; and with fervent faith and longing, come, let us cry out: O pure Maiden, keep thy monastery and thy flock from all dangers, tribulations, and adversities, for we cry to thee: Rejoice, thou help and defence of all.

Met Gala 2024: Where fashion meets art in memorable style
This year’s Met Gala gathered some classic, elegant looks with dared fashion. Some celebrities looked superb, and some celebrities took it to the edge of fashion. Exploring the stand out outfits on the red carpet that made this year’s event unique.
The Met Gala took place on May 6, 2024 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A long list of famous celebrities and fashion icons were invited to celebrate this annual event; the exhibition was entitled by ‘Sleeping beauty: Reawaking the fashion’.
On Monday the 6th, we witnessed all of the stylists’ hard work, makeup artists, designers, and the world’s most known celebrities work together to appear in the most iconic looks. The Met Gala theme was “The Garden of time”, which was motivated by J.G. Ballard’s short story that was written in 1962. This year’s met gala gathered around 250 historical and delicate fashion pieces which are allured to ‘sleeping beauties’; since they are so fragile to be ever worn again. The event witnessed authentic designs by Christian Dior, Givenchy, and Yves Saint Laurent.
In the past years, Rihanna always held the title of “Queen” with the most legendary looks. However, due to her absence, many celebrities shined and were noticed on the red carpet. Zendaya was one of the first celebrities to walk on the carpet, and she looked spectacular, everyone there was blown away by her blue, green one shoulder dress, and with her smokey iconic eye makeup look and dark lips. She was wearing a John Galliano, a dress that was designed by Dior in 1999, her outfit were inspired by fruit trees which matched perfectly with the theme.
Although, the popular star was not done yet. After two hours of Zendaya’s appearance on the red carpet, she returned with a whole different look even more fabulous. The photographers and reports went crazy seeing her again. Zendaya wore a black off-shoulder corset gown by Galliano designed by Givenchy in 1996; the year she was born. The young star was the first person to wear this archived dress, she was able to change her hair, wearing a floral headpiece. Zendaya changed her whole makeup by a brighter glammy look. “How did change Zendaya?” a reporter shouted out loud to Zendaya while posing for photographs. Celebrities take a long time to decide what to wear, who to style them…etc. That’s why it was really surprising how she managed to pick two different looks in the world’s most known fashion event.
Even though we were amazed by many celebrities look, some of them were questionable. “What’s the grey sweater for?” a comment from Kim Kardashian’s follower after she posted on Instagram, showing her Met Gala’s outfit. A question that a lot of fashion critics asked their selves, thinking that the dress could have been ripped and she was obligated to wear it. Kim was wearing a silver tight corset dress with cropped grey sweater by John Galliano.
Kim explained afterwards, that John was inspired by Maison Margiela fashion show catwalk. He wanted to stay authentic to the fashion show’s vision which was wearing cropped cardigans and jumpers in corset dresses.
Unfortunately, many people thought that she would have nailed her looked if she took off the cardigan.
To sum up, the Met Gala will remain one of the most iconic annual fashion events.
This year’s Met was extraordinary, a lot of celebrities nailed their looks like Zendaya, Lana Del Ray, Kendall Jenner, and many more who have always excided the audience’s expectation. However, we also always witness some weird looks that we never understood. In my opinion, Kim’s outfit was amazing but it would have a lot been better if she took off that sweater, but she will always remain an icon.
