“horror movies of the 1980s exist at the glorious watershed when special visual effects finally catch up with the gory imaginings of horror fans and movie makers. technical advances in special effects (animatronics, liquid and foam latex) meant the human frame could be distorted to grotesque new dimensions on screen. 1980s horror movies delivered the full colour close-up, look-no-strings-attached, special effect in a way that previous practitioners of the art could only dream about. everything lurking in the shadows in older horror movies was now dragged into the garish light of day. the monsters were finally out of the closet.”

bus stop, belonging, smoke - a bus meet cute double drabble for @anincompletelist 💛
Tumblr media
Henry gestures for the bus—unnecessary, considering he’s at this bus stop at 7:30am six days a week. He’s always one of the first to get on, followed by a woman in a grey wool coat, cigarette smoke clinging to the fibers. They take their seats in the back, Henry closest to the left window. He doesn’t know her name, but makes up a rich life for her based on the crow’s feet around her eyes, the cherry red lips, the greying temples. Every day, he pulls out a weathered copy of Persuasion, pops in earbuds, and lets his mind wander as he pretends to read.
The routine gives him a sense of belonging in the busy city; an anonymous person in the world, yet entrenched in someone else’s life, just like they are in his. It’s all very mundane.
Until one day, it isn’t.
Today, someone’s running at full tilt next to the bus, desperate to catch it when it stops at Rio Cinema. A riot of curls boards the bus, eyes darting to find an open seat. He beelines towards the back and plops down in the one free spot across from Henry.
“Good book?” he asks.
Routine—disrupted.

“horror movies were reborn in the 1930s. sound revolutionized cinema across the board and had a huge impact on the horror genre— and not just in the form of dialogue. sound effects added an extra dimension to terror, from creaking doors to echoing footsteps to the rumbling of castle thunder. music cues built suspense or signaled the presence of a threat. as screen storytelling moved away from symbolism towards realism, the dreamlike wraiths of silent cinema were replaced by monsters that grunted, groaned and howled.”
