Legend of Korra S4 Thoughts
It’s almost 2 AM but I’m jotting down my tired thoughts about s4
Spoilers ahead

Overall I thought it was a pretty good season. Some aspects are a little shaky but overall it was a pretty strong season
I think kuvira was a good antagonist. Her stepping up to take power after korra left is a really good follow up to s3. I think the way she contrasts zaheer in the ways they think the world should be without an avatar was interesting. With zaheer wanting chaos and kuvira being on the other end of the spectrum with full control with her straight up being a fascist.
I think the way she will sacrifice everyone and everything to reach her goal made her more intimidating too. She contrasts to zaheer who did you force to reach his goal but mostly carefully planned his steps and did it with a smaller team with less casualties and damage. Kuvira does a lot with force. She does plan but most of her plans involve showing the power she has in numbers and technology or just her own strength.
I don’t like how they tried to sorta make you sympathize with her (sympathize? idk if this is the right word. understand her?). She straight up had labor camps and “re-education” camps. She captured non earth kingdom citizens and put them there. I think the parallels to her and a fascist regime aren’t subtle so it’s a bit weird to be at the end like “oh she did this because she was scared and wanted control”
I feel like hama or jet are more sympathetic in their need for control after experiencing trauma and that leading to them hurting others. I think because of the scale and damage of what kuvira did made me just not feel sympathetic to her. I think also bcuz she also had a family in the beifongs too where as jet and hama lost everything.
I think the use of spirit powers was also kinda meh. This is a problem to the whole of korra but turning spirits and spiritual powers into raw power was not a good move. Spirits and spirituality in alta was more about personal growth and connecting with nature. It had basis in an actual philosophy. They kinda had that with korra reconnecting with herself but really pushed it more into spirit energy is raw power.
I’m a little conflicted though bcuz I think the spirit laser thing is sorta a good idea. It introduces nukes and nuclear energy into the avatar universe and I think that’s an interesting idea but I think it falls flat bcuz it uses spirit energy to do that so idk.
I liked korra in this season. The way they continue her arc that started in season one and fleshed her out and matured her more is good. The way they dive into the trauma she’s endured in the past seasons. I think it’s able to give those scenes more weight. I think it also shows how korra has gone through so much in such a short time and gives her and the audience time to process it a bit more.
Idk how I feel about the message of korra needing to go through trauma to grow. I can see what they were going for. Using your experience even bad ones to grow is good. Getting stuck and learning nothing will leave you stuck. I like that it’s both talked about and shown with how korra just leaves and is unable to fully heal for a good while.
I don’t think she needed to experience trauma for that though. I don’t really think anyone should go through trauma. I feel like if they expressed it more like “I hate what happened to me. It really sucks and hurt me in a way that changed me, but I’m glad I was able to overcome it and grow from it. I changed for the better rather than the worst” or something along those lines. Idk
I do like that scene with zaheer. It was interesting to see him especially since he actually decides to help korra. Zaheer was always interesting bcuz of that the way he actually sits and talks with ppl and does things in a peaceful way despite how ruthless he is. I kinda wish we had a bit more time with him especially with him as a teacher for korra.
I think the characters and their arcs are pretty interesting this season. I’m glad we got to see varrick and zhu li again. They’re both great and seeing more of them is always good. I actually liked mako this season. He felt more like a side character with his arc with wu but it was good to see him.
Also side tangent wu and mako had more chemistry for me than korra and mako despite how much the writers really tried to push them in s1 and s2 lol
Anyways. Some of the characters did fall a bit flat. I love asami but she also sorta felt like a side character. I might write more about asami in another post since I have thoughts but I’m tired lol. I also like bolín but he’s always great
That clip show episode was kinda meh. The best part was varrick and bolin since that phone scene with all the antagonists was really funny. But honestly I wish they could have cut it but it was probably there for budget reason so cest la vie
I might have more thoughts but that’s for tmrw lol. Overall I’d rate s4 an 7.5/10

The Mrs. And I have been rewatching Korra and I just wanted to remind y'all that Kuvira should never have been a villain and season 4 should have ended with the Earth Kingdom reclaiming Republic territory. That the show chose to depict a land back movement as fascist is absolutely fucked up.

hi hello i present to you keeper characters and random other characters they are similar to:
sophie - percy jackson. neither wanted to be a “leader”, were forced into the role till they carried it with pride, uprooted from their original lives and told these insane truths that finally make all the weird shit make sense, can’t help but fall for people who they think don’t like them back but do but it takes forever to realize
fitz - mako from legend of korra. both unnecessarily hated, slightly protective older siblings, dated main character and didn’t end up with her, queer coded, angry all the time
keefe - sirius black from harry potter. hides behind jokes, in love with his best friend, emotionally inept (but working on it), 0 self esteem or self worth, parental abuse and trauma, doesn’t believed they can be loved.
biana - rarity from my little pony. generosity, loves her friends to the end and back, loves fashion, acts of service/being there for people, changes perspective on what beauty really is, gorgeous
tam - evan rosier from harry potter (actually MY mauraders tv show that i made in my head). the only thing they truly love is their twin sisters, would do anything to protect them (even though they are not at all helpless) & nothing is “too far” when it comes to it, CHOSE to be on their parents bad side/outcast when their sisters were forced out, ruthless, mistrusting, & funny asf
alvar - loki from the mcu (no redemption arc). i haven’t watched the show but based off prior knowledge, jealousy for his younger brother, looked over by his parents, does terrible things because of it. however fitz is NOT thor and alvar is not half as hot.
thank you for coming to my ted talk

Okay with the Mako comic, the cover has a photograph of his parents on the front. Which means the comic could be about his parents deaths in some way
If it is (and seems likely!) then I’m happy. It’s something that needs fleshing out. I do like Legend of Korra and thinking it’s an interesting mess that is flawed and is interesting and is y’know, good and discourse over exaggerated it’s faults and cannot comprehend looking at a story as a whole. But it’s so weird to have a main characters parents butchered by a fire bender and then it’s hardly touched on again. Like they do not really ask the question how that would affect a child firebender’s psyche, or how he could grow from that. Mako’s growth in Book 4 is linked back to his ex-girlfriends, which I’m fine with, but Mako’s other story was always so incomplete and unexplored.
ANYWAY that being said’ the fact that this Mako comic having a family photograph on the cover and being linked to a ‘mystery’ does give me some pause; I’m not that interested in Mako and Bolin’s parents being linked to a mystery or conspiracy. Just because I’m tired of the Avatar franchise linking characters to important parents or them being the most exceptional benders. Mako and Bolin being random nobodies who became great benders as a means to survive is one of the reasons I do like those characters a lot. So there’s a chance that if his parents deaths are part of a mystery, then there’s some elevated importance ‘politically’ and GOD zzzzzz not what I want to see.
Basically I don’t want a story about Mako’s parents death and the lore behind it, what I want is a character study of Mako, his feelings a out his parents deaths, with some dumb adventure plot thrown in. But what I want might not be what I get, and I will still buy this comic. Surprise me, Bryke

anyone else think United Republic of Nations was a little expansionist and fucked up. Cuz why did my sweet little uncolonized Fortune Teller Earth Kingdom village somehow get annexed???😭
this is honestly a sick example of liberal imperialism inspiring militant fascist reactionary nationalism (kuvira) :/

Also during my attempt at rewatching LOK I had thought that I would change my mind about Book 4, and see the so-called romantic development between Korra and Asami their shippers were harping on about because when it was "airing" on Nick.com I was half watching each episode while I was on my way in class/ignoring my lectures while half asleep LOL. But most of the episodes were so damn boring that I was looking forward for each of them to end... It didn't help that by the time Book 4 was halfway over I still didn't know what the real plot was about, or the fact that Korra had no real contributions to the so called nonexistent plot. Which made sense considering how Bryan K. stated they had a hard time fitting Korra in the show. Named after her.
I should have dropped the show during Book 3 when I thought to myself that I should but my lifelong obsession with ATLA and my stubborn belief that ATLA creators were the best writers there were forced me not to.

Like HOW are we still on “I just don’t like how all the lok villains had a point but then they do something bad so we can return to the status quo :///” in the year of our lord 2023?
The status quo of changing your entire societal structure or system of government to adopt and accommodate the legitimate grievances brought up by the villain? Ah yes truly the most heinous of performative activism

@twinchief liked for a thing!!
Tahno has been off to the sidelines, ( slouched ) leaning against a vendor's stall wall, arms crossed, glacier eyes observant to the peculiar pair parading around the festival. Korra told him that the twins where set to make an appearance in Republic City, and he wanted front row seats to pick them apart.
But he had pinky promised to play nice ( after all, he was a big boy working under Beifong ). So it was a few long strides to saddle up to the two, a smart remark already in tow -

" I do not think I could be a twin ;
The world would not be able to handle that much beauty. "

season 1,3 and 4 mako have my entire soul, but season 2 mako????
i’d leave him in a ditch on the side of the road when it’s -17 degrees (celsius) outside and laugh as he freezes to death.

Whenever I visit Barnes & Noble -- which sadly has become the only place left with a viable DVD/Blu-ray selection where I can walk and browse -- I take notice of this absolutely beautiful looking Complete Avatar Blu-ray Box Set that they have on the shelves.  Collecting both The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.
I’m never going to buy it because I have already bought both shows -- twice! -- but it still calls to me.  Every time.  As though my brain is saying that if I just buy it -- again -- it will be like I’m reexperiencing it all over again.
And I know that’s not how it works, which is how I’ve resisted buying it so far.  But it’s almost childlike the way this obsession goes, the certainty that if I can just get my parents to buy me that latest toy I saw in a commercial then it will all be okay.
Gah!

a lot of people (myself included) are assuming that veilguard is going to end with the players making a choice about whether to kill solas and keep the world as it was or to side with him and tear down the fade. and this lines up with what devs have said re: solas’ role in the game and his relationship with rook. but at the same time that’s kind of crazy to think about??? like how could they expect to follow up that kind of decision in the sequel? those are two very different world states so idk….kinda hard to imagine that scenario
