Things I Love About LoK

Goal: Write 1 thought every day re: why I love The Legend of Korra until I finish rewatching the series.  

#140: Bolin’s conversation with Ghazan and Ming Hua in “Long Live the Queen.”

I’ve commented before on how Bolin and his ‘arc’ (such as it is) confound me. But regardless of how I feel about his character development throughout the series, I still love him because he is hilarious. Only Bolin can pull off scenes like the one where he and Mako are in the truck with Ghazan and Ming Hua in “Long Live the Queen.”

I love Mako’s disapproval face as Bolin strikes up a conversation with their captors:

I love that Bolin has this disarming ease about him – his friendliness bring out little interesting factoids about how Ghazan and Ming Hua spent their years in imprisonment:

Bolin: So you guys were, like, locked up for fifteen years, huh? That must have been, like, crazy boring. Ghazan: Actually, it was only thirteen years, but it felt like thirty. Bolin: I mean, what did you do with all that time? Did you sing songs, work on crafts? Ming-Hua: Not a lot of craft supplies in a volcanic prison cell. Ghazan: And I must have renamed the constellations about a thousand times. When it rained, that was a big event. Ming-Hua: Oh, I would’ve killed for some rain. Mostly I just made up stories about the guards. Who was having trouble with his girlfriend? Which one secretly wished he’d become a pastry chef?

The factoids, in turn, give us a fleeting glimpse into Ghazan and Ming Hua’s characters.  

And of course, I love Bolin’s three guesses about Ghazan:

Bolin: Ooh, okay, that sounds like fun. Let me try that on you guys. You were raised by an older sister. Your mustache grew in when you were ten. And I’m sensing- just sensing- an unspoken attraction between you two. Ghazan: Two out of three. Not bad. Mako: Bolin, will you stop making friends with the bad guys? Bolin: Sorry. 

A great scene that humanizes Ghazan and Ming Hua while highlighting Bolin’s easygoing nature (and Mako’s seriousness).

This spider has the largest body of any spider in the world, with a body length of up to 13 cm (5.1 in), and a weight of up to 175 g (6.2 oz), and a leg-spread of up to 30 cm (12 in).

Despite the name, this tarantula rarely feeds on birds. They feed mainly on invertebrates, frogs, and sometimes on small reptiles.

I bet you that if we had gotten Book 4: Air, and there had been a time skip, we wouldn’t be seeing so much Aang hate today.

No really. If the show had been able to continue and gave us an older, edgier, more attractive Aang?

He would have fans falling all over themselves for him.

The thing is that ATLA ended when Aang was barely turning 13. A goofy, bald, pacifist, vegetarian 12 year old isn’t attractive and so too many fans discount him. How can he possibly compete with openly tormented and outwardly angry Zuko? Or quietly insecure and naturally hilarious Sokka?

Zuko and Sokka who are 16 and 15 respectively (nearing 17 and 16 by the end), and therefor at an age where romance is more relevant to most, and so are the focus of so much love and affection and especially shipping?

If Aang had been able to grow anywhere between 15 - 18, he’d be right up there with the other two. You’d see metas about his tragic backstory, suddenly more of the fandom would care about the loss of his entire people, about the survivor’s guilt, the intense loneliness, the diaspora, the yearning for common everyday things that now no one else in the world understands.

But we didn’t get that. Instead we got LOK, with an old, bearded, post-bucal fat removal Aang. An Aang who has already had children and has a controversial score on “dad ratings”.

The poor kid never stood a chance.

Loki x Ticklish Reader

Romantic + 13. “That’s… quite an attitude for someone in your position.” Requested by >:3 anon for my 1K Followers Event🌻

This little drabble turned into a 1.3K words fic, oops I got carried away. Hope you like it anon!

It was the basic rule and you knew that. You lost the game. Loser gets to do whatever the other asks for the rest of the day. Of course you had only agreed to the condition in order to gain power over your usually evil and sassy lover Loki, God of Misschief, but unfortunately found yourself in the opposite camp. Losers camp.

"Don't worry love. You don't think I would actually ask you things to humiliate you? Just some innocent simple things to tease my sweetheart, that's all. You know what? In order to make it easier to follow my commands, I'll offer you two choices everytime. Do you agree?" Loki reasoned with a smug smile on his face.

You rolled your eyes fondly and fiddled with your playing cards, the ones that had guided you into this losing game. You nodded.

"Alright, sounds fair to me," you answered. You knew Loki wouldn't be too bad to you, considering he was your lover after all. However you liked the idea of having at least some freedom to choose. Loki nodded.

"Good. Then starting with the first set of choices. Either you give me a kiss," he tapped his own lips.

"Or... I tickle you."

Your eyes widened at the mention of the second option, and you coughed in surprise. Tickle?! What... You shook your head and quickly leaned in to kiss his lips.

"E-easy choice," you mumbled with a blush. Loki smirked at you.

"Right?" He pulled you back and kissed you more.

The next few hours, Loki would offer you more choices, but at random. However being the evil God of Misschief, he stuck to an obvious pattern. So very evil.

Bark like a dog, or I tickle you.

Give me a massage, or I tickle you.

Braid my hair, or I tickle you.

They were innocent requests at first, but turned weirder and harder.

Feed me a donut, with your mouth, or I tickle you.

Do a handstand while singing a serenade to me, or I tickle you.

"You know I wouldn't choose the second option by now! Try something else!" you said with a red face, which was about to become even redder now that you started the crazy handstand-serenade thing. And it got even crazier, that little...!

Run into that store and yell "The Hulk is my man!", then buy cookies and leave. Or… I tickle you.

"You really are enjoying yourself aren't you!" you yelled after living through that most humiliating experience ever, and you threw the pack with cookies you bought at his face. His laughter was both maniacal and sweet.

Put these on, or I tickle you.

When Loki offered a pair of handcuffs, you should've known it was a trap. Still, you were very quick to put your hands forward, blushing at the thought of him tickling you, like you did everytime he mentioned the damn word! But the moment the cold metal clicked around your wrists and Loki waved the key between his fingers before putting it into his pocket, you knew you were done for.

"Now, spread your arms and tell me you love me... or, I tickle you," he said, slowly and teasingly, his eyes locking with yours. You swallowed and moved your hands a little, only to confirm these were real handcuffs.

"I c-can't," you said. "I can't spread my arms like this... You have to take these off first."

Loki cocked his head. "That's too bad now. I'm afraid I lost the key, and I really need this confession from you. Spreading your arms is part of the deal. Hm... I guess that leaves only one other option," he said, but you jumped back and shook your head, already giggling in anticipation.

"No no no, hehehe you trickster! That's cheating, it isn't fair!"

"I did not cheat, it is fair, I still gave you two choices," Loki explained calmly, approaching you with slow steps and a sadistic and triumphant look on his face.

"Y-you're being totally unfair, cheater! I'll get you back for this!" Your back touched the wall and you gulped.

Loki only needed a few more steps to completely cage you in. “Really? You'll get me back? That’s… quite an attitude for someone in your position.”

You let out a squeak as soon as he grabbed you, and you started laughing even before you felt the long-awaited and anticipated tickles invading your body.

"Nohoho you're so mehehean!" you laughed when he tickled you with firm and steady touches, his fingers digging into your soft torso and rubbing circles almost as if he was massaging you. But damn it tickled like hell!

"I am the God of Misschief after all~" Loki said proudly, taking your cuffed hands and pushing them up over your head to pin them there, with magic. Your eyes widened when he waved both hands at you, showing you that he didn't need them to keep your arms pinned helplessly.

"You cheheheater wahahah!" you howled again when he tickled both your armpits, ribs and sides without mercy. You danced and bucked against the wall in the most uncharming manner, causing you to blush even more.

"Finally I can tickle you. I wanted to let you know that one way or another, I get what I want," Loki sang proudly. It was funny that he needed to make such a show out of it while he could've tickled you straight away from the get-go, right after winning the card game.

But no, he needed to come up with the 2 choices rule. He needed to make it into this silly game and let you do crazy things like the handstand-serenade and feeding him with your mouth, and the damn Hulk shoutout at the store, oh that was awful!

"You ahahare the wohohorst!" you shrieked, kicking your legs while the magic held your bound arms in place. Loki simply caught your leg and tickled your thigh.

"I am the worst, but you do love me," Loki said teasingly, smiling when your laughter went even pitchier the moment he tickled your thigh.

"Right?" he asked, but you were going insane with hysterical laughter.

"Nohoho! I hahahate you hehehe!" you laughed defiantly.

"Oh we both know that is a lie," he said, and yes it was kind of embarrassing that even in this helpless position, you felt like you needed to show your evil boyfriend some more attitude. But it happened. You were rude, and you paid the price. Loki lifted both your legs, making you wrap them around his waist, and he tickled your inner thighs until you were almost screaming into his face.

This was not only getting way too ticklish and tiring, but also way too embarrassing. You did love Loki after all, and looking the way you did in front of the one you loved, really was too embarrassing.

"AHAHA alrihihight I lohohove you! Hahahaha! Plehehease! Mehehercy!"

"Loki, God of Mercy, at your service," Loki teased like the brat he was. A single snap of his fingers didn't only release your hands from their magical cage, but also released your hands from the cuffs. You immediately wrapped your arms around his neck for balance.

With your legs still around his waist, you were pressed between him and the wall, and you'd wipe the smug expression off his face if it weren't for this urgent desire to kiss him.

"I promise you, I will get you back for that evil prank," you said breathlessly. Loki shrugged and smiled.

"Can't wait, darling~" he answered, and finally the two of you kissed. Your own loud and hysterical laughter was still ringing in your ears, but Loki's lips against yours also set off some imaginary fireworks inside your head, which really made up for a lot of things.

But... That didn't mean you would give up any shot at revenge. Which, in the case of plotting against your powerful lover, meant that you simply had to get better at card games, beat his ass next time and claim. your. prize!

Normally, I wouldn't do anything to commemorate anniversaries or w/e, but this one... this one is extraordinarily special and holds a significant personal meaning.

25 years ago today, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver dropped! jfc 25 years, it's really been that long, holy shit.

Don't like saying this phrase because it's hella cringe, but this was one of the very few games that changed my life. It came during a time filled with a lot of, uh, not great things going on and while I didn't fully appreciate it then (because young 13 year old teenager with hormones), Soul Reaver and the broader thematic elements of the LoK series resonate even more as a 37 year old adult who has struggled with a great many things in the years since.

Yeah, the gameplay hasn't aged well in parts (there's a certain narm-ish charm to the asinine box puzzles EXCEPT IN THE STUPID CATHEDRAL), but Soul Reaver is the game that made me see video games could be a legitimate art form: not Final Fantasy 7, not Metal Gear Solid, not even Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Is it perfect? Nah, there's a lot that could've been done differently, but for all its flaws, it's still my #1 favorite game of all time.

Ironically, Raziel isn't my favorite character in the series -that would be Mortanius, actually, followed by Kain and then Raziel- but he has such an iconic, unique design that none have quite come close to since, and that's saying something as someone who draws a ton of Warframe material.

If you haven't played Soul Reaver or its sequels (SR2 and Defiance), highly recommended if only for the writing and the voice acting. Until the Remasters finally drop (you can try memory holing them as much as you'd like, Dark Horse, y'all let the cat out of the bag lmao), though, there's always watching longplays or cinematics on YouTube ig. *shrug*

Mannn can y’all imagine if NAtLA had just aged up the characters to all be around their late teens (like the LoK characters)? Because IMO there’s no reason for Aang and Katara to be as young as they were in the show when so much else has been altered.

If they had aged Aang up to say like 15-16 (and probably Katara as well bc I think Zuko and Sokka’s NAtLA ages are fine) I not only think the story would work better for the gritty live action they want, but this would make things a lot easier for shippers in general lol.

I’m making this post specifically in response to the amazing chemistry Zuko and Aang have in NAtLA. Like these two have much more chemistry in one episode than Aang has with either Sokka or Katara in the entirety of the rest of the show.

Like imagine all the Zuko and Aang interactions from NAtLA, but Aang is only a year or two younger than Zuko. Two young men who are on opposing sides of the war, but who are also two halves of the same coin, yin and yang, whose destinies are intertwined?? The amount of Zukaang shippers that would bring about would be astronomical!

Yeah Korra is... clunky with it's pacing at best. You can look forward to mako and asami's entire existence. I'd blame at least some of it on the show's shitty shitty production schedule though. Season 1 was what, 12 episodes to set up an entire new world for the show then every season after was a complete circle jerk with the studio giving the production staff one more season, cancelling it, then giving it back with cut funding.

Not saying the writing is good but it's understandable how they got to that point.

LOK has a VERY bad habit of ‘tell, haven’t shown yet’ in it’s first episode.

‘She lacks restraint.’ Where? As a kid? We don’t even know Korra as an older teen yet so that doesn’t count. And no, her smirking as she flies through some fire is not a lack of restraint. I understand that ‘confidence’ can correlate with ‘unbridled ego’ but it could just be a healthy amount of confidence.

‘You lack the spiritual side of bending.’ Where? You are not even four minutes in- you have not had the time to establish something like this.

‘I thought everyone was just living it up.’ WHERE?! We haven’t seen a thing of Republic City’s culture or quality of life yet! No one has commented on what it’s like either so what is this supposed to be expanding on? Also homeless people will exist in society no matter what.

I know this sounds stupid but really consider examples of this done in other media before. They will start with a depiction of what is about to be said THEN have the characters comment on it. That’s because it gives the viewer an indication of what is being focused on and the comment cements the idea that this is an idea that will be focused on. It also helps the audience to build expectations and smoothly digest the information in front of them so that it’s more enjoyable.

This is just making things come across as sudden and awkward. I get that characters will have knowledge that the audience isn’t privy to but that’s why these scenes exist- to get everyone on the same page. And Korra isn’t using ignorance in the audience as a writing tool- I can tell from the lack of establishing shots that this is just rushed pacing.

2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 299,440. Ok, I hadn’t realized I was that close. Now, my answer to #1 might be “a new 560-word drabble.”

3. What fandoms do you write for? I’m nearly exclusively writing for Avatar: Legend of Korra, with a little bit of Last Airbender, where it fits in.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

1. Rainstorm - Su is there for Lin, for once. 2. The Well of Need - My first long-form story, with Lin taking care of Kya. 3. This is My Anchor - A mid-sized Kyalin story where Lin doesn’t make Kya take care of her. 4. I’m Sorry I Need You - An angsty one-shot that fits with a couple others in the “marriage is hard” domain. 5. Walk With Me - A longer-than-intended one-shot variant on a Tumblr joke.

5. Do you respond to comments? I do, as soon as I can. Sometimes, that means getting off work. Sometimes, that means giving a response as meaningful as the comment was to me. 

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? For complete stand-alone stories, that is likely Something Changed, where the last words are usually joyous. I can’t find the link for the worst-worst ending I have, so just pretend that never happened.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? The happiest ending? I like my happy endings, so this is tough. But I think I’ll go for Elemental Changes, because that launched my collaboration with @slowdissolve on Red Jade.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Not hate, exactly. One reader informed me that I had ‘let them down’ on a follow-up story because I didn’t write the story that was in their head. 

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I’ve done a little, but it hasn’t been a focus for me. And, aside from the polyamory aspect, it’s all as vanilla as it comes.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Not unless you count LOK + ATLA a crossover, which I don’t.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Not to date.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? @slowdissolve and I wrote Moonsigns together, and we published two versions. One is told in first-person language and color coded, on Tumblr. We then followed it up with a more traditional third-person version that does not rely on color, on AO3.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? Kyalin is where everything opened up for me. 

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I’m taking quite the long view of all of this. I haven’t added to Their Sacred Year in a while, but have the outline for the next installment, so I don’t consider it abandoned.

16. What are your writing strengths? Folks seem to like my dialogue and plotting.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? I struggle with the final rising action / climax / falling action, to keep the pacing appropriate to the story.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I don’t plan on it, given I am uneducated in the languages appropriate to this setting. 

19. First fandom you wrote for? Legend of Korra.

20. Favourite fic you’ve written? Saving the hardest for last. Naming the favorite child. Ok, fine. In that case, I’ll have to choose <wrestles with self> Elemental Changes (see #7), mostly because it’s a completely off-the-wall idea that I was able to see through and complete. And to have Slowdissolve illustrate the ending was an absolute capstone.

The 16hour nap and suddenly shes okay with Su like thats not how that workssss 

2. A canon or headcanon hill I will die on

HC i will die on is her scars going up to her eyebrow and shes blind in that eye, i loveeeee her surviving easily off the seismic sense and then when shes in the south without her bending people realize they can sneak up on that side and quietly adjust how they approach her so they stop scaring her.

3. Obscure headcanon

She paints! Shes been painting since before she could bend and it’s something she had that was all hers and no one else in her family could compare it to Toph.

I love that shes that ‘good is not nice’ its so in line with her being the beifong of the LoK series and seeing how much she genuinely cares under that tough armor is endearing

Dude she jumped at every chance for a suicide mission. Thats gotta be some deep seeded issues lmao

Shes like 50-53/54 in the show

Again probably the appropriate weight for being her size and muscular. After book one tho she has a hard time remembering to eat and i hc in the south she lost a ton of weight in the recovery.

idk if i have a wholly unpopular opinion. I know the fandom can be a bit divided on things. 

I have gotten a lot of backlash for my height hc in the past tho lmao

The first scene MY HEART i love her soo much. I saw her in screen and went, that ones mine!

In canon she brings an RCPD skyship into Ba Sing Se and aids Korra and Tenzin in stealing the EQ’s air bender army. All in uniform.

Oh god pretty much every time she’s on the screen lmao, but I hc she goes down for good protecting Korra not long after canon.

Hmmm I’m so caught up on this question because does it mean  A) thing they did with Bad Intentions that had a Bad Outcome  B) thing they did with Good Intentions that had a Bad Outcome  C) something they perceive as a failure / personal sin they’ll be forgiven for?  There’s so many ways to take thissss 

I’m gonna say during one of the first undercover operations with Saikhan she had to kill a man to keep her cover and he’s a cold case file in her office.

that through all her good intentions and desperate attempts to keep people she loved and the city she loved safe, she’s always left defeated and broken with a new scar on her somewhere and blood on her hands.

A handful of Cigarette burns across her shoulders, collarbones and one on her neck - her bio father was upset she wasn’t a firebender 

Facial scars from su are higher and damaged her eyesight.

Her uniform, a jeep, and rations. She’ll make her way home left with nothing but those will make it easier lol. (She is a detective you know)

she would probably just metal bend the elevator to open, most likely leaving it more broken than it was but still. At least they’re out safe.

Bumi, always. Hes always had a way of getting through the armor and helping her loosen up a little and smile.

she’s worried everyone is right honestly. Sometimes the letters from Kya dwindle as responsibilities emerge, dinner with Saikhan and Akira and the kids get put on hold, tenzin not allowing her back to the island she grew up on because of the bitter words shared between them. Maybe she will be a stubborn old woman left alone with her wounds.

She read a book in school for a study hall about the history of the arts and historical pigment making. She has a few copies and one dedicated to her notes and swatches from trying out the methods.

Aang, 10000%%% she would want to see Aang again and update him on all the crazy shit korra was doing and about Tenzin’s kids.

The bison whistle Aang gave her. (Bumi has his original one but he had more made for the other kids) 

The stuffed badgermole she’s had since she was like 4 

Then they were preteens Tenzin had made her a bracelet with a small thumb sized stone pendant that he carved for her to rub/pick at instead of her fingers. She used it for a while but ended up putting it away when she started the junior league ProBending. 

43. 3 favorite foods and 3 they despise

Fav - mochi, that seal jerky she’s always loved it, a chicken curry type dish Akira makes. 

Des - eggs if they’re alone like fried or scrambled she won’t eat it unless it’s mixed in with a bigger dish. Milk and cheese, She's not a fan of them.

It was her 4th birthday before her element showed and shes sitting in the gardens with aang and tenzin and some of the other kids on the island for her birthday. Her uncle aang gives her a stuffed badgermole toy and a warm and very soft blanket bumi and kya made with katara from Appa’s shedding fur and she still has both items on her bed with her to this day.

And old old singer from when she would listen to the radio at night.

Oh gosh probably Suki, she was a strong warrior and led her life how she wanted to.

she would love to be a sculptor/artist full time, she makes the most gorgeous sculptures. And paints some amazing landscapes. 

48. Scariest moment of their life

Oooof there’s a few. If day the times where she KNEW she was going to die without help. When she fell under the ice when she was like five or six. Then again when she landed on the rebar in the building explosion. The agony of being in pain and the realization that she was too hurt. She couldn’t get herself out of there. At least when she was tortured by Amon she chose to put herself in the situation. Even if she didn’t know the extent. The others though, it was random. She couldn’t control that. She didn’t have a choice.

Her stuffed bagermole toy for sure
