OK BUT YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THIS!!!!
I am so glad I found this post. I wanted to talk about the cultural backgrounds in atla and lok for a while now. Thank fuck I found this post.
I am not kidding when I say that out of all the kids shows that came out of America. Atla has been one of the most culturally inclusive shows that I have ever watched.
WHICH IS A BIG THING AT LEAST FOR ME.
Usually whenever I see Americans especially right wing Americans they are almost always ignorant and condescending about other cultures. Even the ones in their own country!!!! So for someone to put an effort like this is refreshing to see although whether that intention was pure or completely capitalistic well..........
Back to the topic!!!!
There are so many culture assimilated in one universe that it makes it hard to classify them properly. Of course can't forget the fact that atla is one of key shows that put native Americans (I know it's not a proper term for the diversity within tribes in America but pardon my generalization.) On international stage. I haven't seen any other show doing this in kids cartoons.
I am so happy to learn more about native cultures that has been sidelined and actively suppressed since colonization so it was a nice change to see. I hope I see such diversity in future shows as well.
We know that water tribe culture is inspired by inuit, a little bit japanese and other native cultures. We know that air nomads share core philosophical values with indic philosophies yet their appearance is wholly based on Tibetan monks. We know that earth kingdom is little bit inspired by imperial China and it's hierarchical structures and we even know that fire nation copies the dark past of japan I.e. imperial japan in power structure and policies.
Water country's position during the 100 years war is a milder representation of what japan did to Korea, China and south east Asia.
Of course can't forget to mention that earth and fire kingdom names remind me of both Chinese and japanese names. Ex ba sing se or hiroshi sato. Water tribes names reminds me of inuit and native names with little bit of meso and micronesian influence ex noatak, tarrlok and korra?
Water tribe hairstyles echo native hairstyles particularly, inuit hairstyles. Haurloopies that katara has and the tree braids that tarrlok has are unique to inuit culture and other native american cultures.
That being said. This is a higly generalized observation.
The more specific would be that every country is a perfect blend of Many cultures.
Water tribes while sharing some aspects with native Americans also share some with mesoamerican and Micronesian myths. The vaatu and raava myth echoes many different philosophies but since I am Indian the only I can be sure about is vaatu and raawa — the two sides of the same coin— the dual nature of the universe is perfect aspect of advaita vedanata.
The air nomads dietary choice echoes the practise of some Hindu sects I.e. they practise strictly vegetarian diet like me!!
Their philopshy also echoes the concept of 'ahimsa' that ROUGHLY translates to non violence although my opinion is that ahimsa is using violence when it's necessary not non violence.
Tenzin focuses on duties and honor whenever he talks to korra and that echoes another big word in Hindu philosophy— dharma. Which again ROUGHLY translates to duty but then again in my opinion it's more complicated than that. There is not translation for dharma in English, I would say.
The point is that many philopshies and cultures mentioned in atla and lok are south Asian philosophies which makes it harder to classify, mainly because every south Asian philosophy almost says the same thing albeit in different ways. (Again highly generalized, correct me if I am wrong)
The base of this universe is definitely india and China with little bit japanese. Idk spirits do remind be of creatures in shintoism.
As I am not aware of Mongolian and African legends and cultures I won't speak on it. I would let someone else add on it.
There is one distinction in atla and lok, lok and republic city echoes the changing times due to industrialization and roaring 20s. The environment in republic city reminds me of post world war 1 America. There are other things but I am lazy so I will time out.
Thank you @kkachi95 for making this post. I found it on pinterest so I downloaded it and immediately posted it. Sorry for not doing it the right way I.e. reblogging.
Anyway, if I got anything wrong then pls correct me!!!!

fanfic writers will go "anyone gonna explore the kinda fucked up or emotionally impactful implications of this minor canon detail?" and then not wait for an answer.

So long, and thanks for all the fish

The second hand of the clock on the wall marched oppressively onward, each quiet tick sounding like the footfall of a tiny boot to Mako’s ears. (The Little Soldier Marches On)
You can have more than one first kiss. (You can have more than one first kiss.) https://archiveofourown.org/works/26994925
“Lin, you’re turning into an ice cube.” (Not That Cold)
“Why are you checking my travel plans again?” (Make up for it)
Lin screws up her face into something she hopes says “bravery” before she knocks on Kya’s childhood bedroom door. (I Don’t Want to be Alone)
“I just don’t know how to apologize in a way that she’ll accept,” Asami says. (Advice)
Lin, I’m pretty sure when you said ‘write me’ you didn’t actually mean it because it’s not your style, but I’m going to be annoying and take you up on it anyway. (The year after)
The first thing Kya says is, “Your hair!” and Lin fidgets, a touch embarrassed. (Tiger Lilies (I dare you to love me))
She was high. Lin could see it on her face, hear it in the muttered apology as Kya shuffled awkwardly on her doorstep. The street beyond was mercifully empty. (Let It Linger)
Kya could count on maybe one hand the amount of times Lin had asked her to stay the night. (Just So We’re Clear)
When Lin Beifong casually asks dinner? as they pass each other in the courtyard on Air Temple Island, it’s hard to decline, and that’s how Kya finds herself almost pressed into her side as the evening deepens into night and dinner into drinks. (Something New)
Lin’s buried in paperwork again when she feels someone approach her office; she cracks a smile when Pema pokes her head inside. (Warmth)
“Oh, I see.”Kya tries to put on an interested face as the girl continues on about some inane topic she’s barely following, rarely letting her get a word in edgewise. (A Better Night)
Mako’s phone lights up and buzzes frantically on the folding table in front of Asami, the alarm alerting her that it’s finally, finally, six in the morning. (The Magic Ghoul Bus)
No tags.
Thank you for all these gifts, Tele.

Canonically, Pema was 18 when Aang died. We don't know much about what Pema was like when she was younger, or when she became an acolyte, and we don't know what Aang was like during his later years in life.
So, headcanons galore! What do you think?
Only 8 weeks left until Pemzin weekend!
