This morning I came downstairs to discover that the dogs have invented a New Crime.
My husband get up very early for his Real Adult Job, and feeds Charleston (Black-and-cream Sighthound mix, mostly leg) and Herschel (40lb cardigan welsh crime tube), then lets them out into the fenced yard before he leaves.
I get up at the same time but take longer to boot up, so the dogs frolick about and discourage the local tree rats from lingering about the property while I get dressed/brush my teeth/try to not be psychologically crushed by The Horrors (TM)
Now it's pretty normal for me to find Herschel doing a high-speed yet startlingly efficient MC Hammer Shuffle on his stubby little legs around the base of the large honey Locust tree we have in the middle of the yard so he could keep his face pointed directly up the trunk at something in the canopy, because this his how he tries to herd squirrels.
...but Charlie is usually nearby, cheerfully play-bowing and encouraging the squirrel to come down, nothing bad will happen-!
This time Charleston is nowhere in sight.
I go outside to investigate and Herschel pauses to tackle me about the kneecaps as a greeting before returning to the tree.
Charleston is not behind the garden bins, nor in the side yard.
I am growing concerned, when I hear a telltale guilty scrape of claws above me.
Charleston is on the roof.
I shuffle out to the middle of the yard, until I can make eye contact with him.
He looks down at me, cheerfully wagging his tail, clearly anticipating praise for being such a clever boy.
I at least know how he got up there.
My house has a deck built off the second floor with a set of stairs leading up to it, and a large honey locust tree grows next to it. Part of the roof is easily accessible with a small hop from the deck.
The deck has only a minimal amount of railing ad the roof has none, so I blocked off the stairs with a board that was too high for Herschel, an inveterate explorer and criminal, to jump, but not Charlie.
I didn't worry about this at the time because Charleston is, in fact, The Best Dog In The Universe, and understands that even though he *could* easily jump various barriers, it would be *impolite* of him to do so.
Charleston is Extremely Polite and thus almost never commits any crimes.
...Almost Never.
Charlie has exactly two vices, which aren't even vices because his ancestors were bred for millennia to do these two exact things.
The first is that he is HIGHLY leash aggressive when I'm present (We were both attacked by a St. Bernard the first day I had him and Charlie has decided Strange Dogs Are Not Allowed To Approach Me)
The Second is that he has the Prey Drive From Hell.
He has chased bears and bulls with full murderous intent.
He almost got me arrested because he cut his leash to chase a pronghorn antelope in front of a park ranger.
It is only for the sake of my saftey and pursuit of prey that he will break the rules.
Today, he has his nemesis cornered
Charleston isn't clever the way Herschel is. He's never really explored using his toys as tools, whereas Herschel speedran the early stages of hominid tool use as a puppy. Arwen was a logistical sort of genius who managed to terraform my parent's yard into Rabbit Thunderdome.
Charleston's genius is... psychological.
If the Squirrels see both dogs, they run for the fence, but if they only see Herschel, they run for the tree.
Charlie is much better at tracking and guessing the route his prey might go, so Charlie runs for their preferred escape route of the tree instead of chasing them.
The squirrels compensate by running for the fence, which is farther away in general, but they have a head start on the dogs.
At Some Point, charlie managed to work out that if he stays in the shadows under the deck, the squirrels won't see his mostly-black body, especially when Herschel charges into the sunlight and catches it on his white ruff.
Charleston realized, long before I did, that there is only the ONE branch that overhangs the roof, and therefore if a squirrel runs up the tree, it only has ONE way out of the yard.
The real genius was combining all of the above into the realization that he could let Herschel charge the squirrels, run through the under-deck shadows and up to the deck and roof while the squirrels are distracted, and plant himself on the roof where the squirrels HAVE to land without them seeing him until it was too late.
-And so we stand this morning.
Herschel at the foot of the tree, preventing the squirrel from running back down and heading for the fence
Charleston square in the landing zone on the roof, at the ready
The squirrel paralyzed on the branch between them
...and me, only sort of awake and realizing that I'm probably the dumbest mammal here.
I need to figure out how to disentangle these beasts without anyone getting maimed. Charleston has the blood of his ancestors baying for the flesh of his nemesis in his ears. Herschel is dangerously close to figuring out how to get on the roof himself. The squirrel is contemplating some truly dire Maneuvers, including dropping out of the tree and assaulting me to buy time.
I haven't even had my coffee yet.
"Charleston." I say with a very aggravated sigh. "That's not where dogs go."
Charleston whimpers.
He has Disappointed (TM) me.
A fate worse than death.
He starts to walk back to the deck, but as he takes a step to leave, so does the squirrel, and he is pulled back by millennia of instinct.
This will require. Delicacy.
or delicacies.
"Stay. I'll be right back." I tell the dogs.
I go back into the house, and retrieve The Best Treat.
The Cat's Wet Food.
Both dogs crave this Most Forbidden snack with an irrational passion, and it is usually both out of reach in the cat tree AND defended by Mochi, who rules the dogs with an Iron Paw.
I return to the yard, and open the can in full view of both dogs.
"Charlie?" I call. "Do you want Wet Food?"
He is halfway down the stairs before I can finish the question.
Herschel switches his orbit from the tree to my person, and I have to shuffle to avoid tripping over them as we go back inside and the squirrel flees.
None of this is the new crime.
I go out with them later to pull Yet More Thistles, and a few minutes in, I hear a little 'huff' from Charlie.
I look up, and he's standing on the stairs, paw up to indicate he's going to jump over the barrier board and go right back up there.
You know.
...Unless there is wet food to be had.
The children have figured out how to commit extortion. I text my husband.
They're so smart! Do you think we can set them on the jackasses across the street? My husband asks, ever the practical man.
I'm going back to bed.

Here is a story. For a while I was the only level 2 judge in central Connecticut and I would at a local store occasional run deck clinics that included how to play for newer players/ less experienced players usually one or two players would show up unless there was a qualifying tournament comming up.
I remember having to explain to one person that Llanowar Elves do not tap to fetch Forests out of your deck or Dark Ritual gets three Swamps. They said its how they played at school. So long story short, I got them down on the rules, and helped with deck construction (it was an elf deck so I helped. The next weekend I had 11 people all from the school show up wanting help with their decks. As it turns out cutting a deck from 100 cards and 20 lands to 60 with 23 and giving a deck some focus made his deck unbeatable lol... and this continued for nearly a month. There were like locust abd bought out nearly every card from the stores binders all trying to one up eachother. A few years later I was judging side events at Protour Boston and one of those kids, was playing in the Protour and found me and thanked me it turned out he was really bad a math but when teaching him about his deck I helped him find the fun in it. A couple decades later I meet him again as he is now a doctor in the Emergency room (I was visiting my aunt who worked there). Its amazing how little things, like effort, spending some time, mentoring or even just listening can ripple out to be big things that help many other people. And Magic was a catalyst for it.
Thanks for sharing that story.

is this anything
***
They’d left the water in the freezer too long. It comes out as something in-between; Oscar catches herself staring at the bottle in Carlos’s hands as he flips it back and forth, shaking the icy slush inside with a quick jerk of his fingers.
It had taken some getting used to—using his name. For a while after he’d come into their territory, everyone in the pack had just called him The Wolf. It’s not natural, some had said. It’s not right. Wolves should keep to their own kind.
Three full moons had passed since then, and not once had Oscar seen Carlos shed his skin.
In that time, spring has come and gone. Summer is nearly upon them, and with it, the first blue moon in nearly three years. The last time Oscar had sat out here on the deck of her family’s back porch like this, the entire pack gathered in anticipation, she’d been eight months shy of nineteen, young enough still to feel a pang of jealousy as she watched the others lope out into the darkness, wishing it was her turn.
Things have changed in the years since. Oscar doesn’t find the idea of being chased down by some uppity pup nearly as romantic as she did when she was a teenager. Not that there’s much hope of being anyone’s first pick—not anymore. She reaches a hand up towards the back of her neck before becoming aware of the motion. Stiffly, she jerks her hand back down to her lap and focuses instead on the mesmerizing swish of the ice in Carlos’s water bottle.
It takes him so long to take a swig of the damn thing that Oscar’s hands start to cramp where they’ve formed fists against her thighs without permission. She uncurls them slowly as she watches him swallow, beads of condensation slicking up under his fingers as beads of sweat make shimmering tracks down his throat.
“You know you can’t call dibs.” Lando is smirking when Oscar tears her gaze away from Carlos to face her friend.
“I’m not interested,” Oscar replies dully.
She flexes her fingers a few more times, nostrils flared as she takes in the scents around her. The whole pack is here, even the city yotes who think they’re too good to come home during equinox and solstice. She catches something salty and rich when the wind turns; it makes her jaw ache. She doesn’t turn to face it.
In some ways, May in the desert is even harsher than July. It hasn’t rained since February and won’t again for months yet. The wind is relentless. It howls in a shrill mimicry of Oscar’s birthright through the vents in the ranch house, pulling the dust and the flies and the locusts in with it. It makes her restless. She used to run during the spring storms sometimes, despite the wind, despite the dust. But that was before.
“Everyone’s interested,” Lando shoots back.
“Not like that,” Oscar points out.
Lando doesn’t respond. Oscar’s right.
Oscar still isn’t even sure why her mother is letting Carlos run at all. The whole wolf thing aside—and it is very much a Thing—Carlos is a good ten years older than the other late bloomers even, the ones who had opted to wait until the odds were in their favor. You only get one chance at the Chase.
Carlos had apparently assured Oscar’s mother that he’d never participated in one with his old pack back in Texas, but Oscar isn’t convinced. He’s almost thirty-four. Oscar had done the math in her head nearly a month ago. Carlos’s first blue moon was almost fifteen years ago, on the eve of his nineteenth birthday. Most pack leaders tended to force the issue by the third. Abstention is never a viable option.
Oscar has wisely opted to run this time around despite her general disinterest in a positive outcome. For her, this is as good as the odds would get; there are far more unmatched females than males, and Oscar is fast. When they were kids, the others had always made fun of her in her shifted form, barely bigger than a jackrabbit. They won’t be laughing when she outpaces them all tonight.
“Nervous?” Logan asks, his shadow briefly obscuring the sun as he wanders over from the water coolers to hover in front of where Oscar and Lando are sitting with their legs crossed on the floor. He has a half-empty water bottle crumpled in one fist. Two others are clutched by the caps between his knuckles, both full up. He extends them to Oscar and Lando in turn, and they both accept wordlessly. Technically, Logan isn’t supposed to be on their side, but Oscar’s mother isn’t as much of a stickler for rules as other alphas. He’ll get away with it as long as he doesn’t sit down.
Oscar shakes her head just as Lando lets out a derisive snort.
Logan grins. “Yeah, me too,” he says with a wink before wandering back onto the boys’ side. He parks himself noticeably closer to Carlos than any of the others, probably trying to show off. He’s one of the late bloomers, a year older than Oscar, maybe intent on Chasing her tonight despite everything—and if things had been any different, if Oscar had still been eighteen—she would probably have let him catch her.
“I wish this part didn’t take so long,” Oscar mutters under her breath. The preparations always go on for ages. She knows the waiting is part of it, that she should be sizing up her counterparts, memorizing their scents, planning a potential route to evade any unwanted suitors. But that’s just the thing. They’re all unwanted. All of this, the bonfire, the blessing, the ceremony, the Chase itself—it’s all a pointless ritual that Oscar has no interest in participating in.
Thirteen moons from now, Oscar plans to be unmatched and unmated, free to seek out a potential bond on her own terms, whenever it feels right. Even if it never feels right, she thinks with a hot surge of righteous anger.
Without warning or cause, Carlos glances up, nostrils flaring, his eyes connecting with Oscar’s from across the back deck with a deep, intense stare. The expected, submissive thing to do would be to look away, so Oscar holds his gaze as if intending to meet a rival alpha’s challenge, daring Carlos to break eye contact first.
But neither have a chance to settle the score. Finally, the sun begins to set over the dark ridge of the Funeral Mountains. And the howling begins.

I like to think Urpi’s always a really artistic, creative soul, but with nowhere to put all the energy cause there is just nooo way she’d do it when she was still up in Skypiea! Not when there is so much work to do, she wouldn’t let herself get distracted by some wayward desire to doodle!
(Still, when the nights were still and quiet she’d spent some of her precious few sleeping hours doing that same exact thing. She had no real answer as to why, the weight of everything just felt a little lighter when she did. She’s never share this with anyone naturally and would deny it to her last breath if/when Nina caught her.)
When she found herself at the mercy of those horrible pirates so many thoughts consumed her, all raging in her head like a swarm of locusts but strangely drawing still came back to her mind. She wished she hadn’t been so cowardly about something she liked, she wished she would have done it more. Maybe her people would more to remember by than just sure to fade memories.
A couple of months after her rescue she ended making a single request to the ever accommodating Vice Admiral: a pencil and some paper. She’d lock herself in her room and draw the curtains tight before delving into that notepad. She drew everything about home, every person she knew, every familiar curve of cloud she could recall. She refused to forget, she’d draw until the pencil snapped again and again. There was no point in drawing anything else anyway.
Until, she began noticing. And once she started she couldn’t stop. The Blue Sea, the islands that inhabit it…they were all quite beautiful.
So she slowly began to draw those too. Just a little at first, a nondescript piece of ocean, the sandy duned deserts of Alabasta, the glorious architecture of Water 7, had this world always been this way? How had she never truly seen it before?
The more she bonded with the crew of that Marine ship the more she began to draw them too. She usually (carefully) ripped them out and handed it over to whoever her muse was and my how they would fawn over their drawn selves, she always thought they were being a little exaggerative but the praise and encouragement was…nice. The Vice Admiral had even gifted a couple sketchbooks and some charcoals which even she had to admit was pretty sweet of him to do.
One of those sketchbooks and most of that charcoal get used for..something, she never clarifies it to anyone.
(It’s drawings of Garp. The crush, her very first one mind you, hit her ass hard and she needed an outlet. What are the contents of those sketches you ask? Well that’s between her, Nika and the lighter she definitely didn’t steal.)
Those… questionable drawings are somewhere locked up tighter than the gates of Mary Geoise. Possibly under a loose floorboard, or a false backing in a bookshelf. Garp accidentally happened upon them once and didn’t say anything about it. He was tickled pink for days on end, but he didn’t say anything about it.
Urpi knew.
There is a sketch right in the middle of one of her earlier sketchbooks that is unfinished. Elbaf, as seen from the deck of an approaching ship. It was some of her finest work, and yet… it felt like it should remain unfinished.
Later that day, Garp proposed to her.
Over the years they were together, she filled many other sketchbooks. Drawings of the inside of their home, the streets of Goa and the high walls, the uncomfortable magnetism of Gray Terminal, the cozy cottage they eventually moved to after Dragon was born (the boy needed room to grow, she and Garp had readily agreed), the garden outside, the jungles of Dawn and the distant peak of My. Colubo…
And Dragon. Dragon, Dragon, Dragon. Her darling boy. His little wings that both made her so proud and so worried. And then Dadan. And then Kuzan. And then all three together. Garp and the kids. Self portraits with the help of a looking glass. The snails Dragon would bring home to show everyone. The penguin that just appeared out of nowhere and had been with Kuzan ever since. The ragtag group of boys that Dadan bossed around. The kids throughout their lives. Dragon- newly appointed Admiral at the time- in his dress uniform, looking adorably uncomfortable, Kuzan snoozing during an award ceremony, Dadan sitting front and center with Garp before the newly built hideout…
And then she had to run.
None of her sketchbooks came with her.
The cottage had been ransacked.
She never had the heart to draw again.
Not until she saw a face she hadn’t seen in a good thirty years. Same nose, same eyes, same mouth as her own, but his shaggy hair and the sharp cut of his jaw were all his father’s. And that tattoo. The same patterning she always knitted into the scarves she used to wrap around his neck when he was just a boy ready to go out and play in the snow.

RT appreciation week!! I have a couple chapters to catch up on but I love Fester so much and I love how you write Heinrix and also general lower decks and slum stuff in the setting. I genuinely think every day about "I'm gonna feed you to the poor"
When people tell me lines that I wrote stick in their head it's like, "Now I've infected you with some of the locusts that buzz in the brain. nice."
I promise there will be more lower deck dramas and also Einrich is on his way for some appearances <3

Alright i went through and looked up all the new cards revealed so far so SPOILERS but first a little background with the set
Like the cowboy set it has multiple characters from different planes in it but the most it really does with this is the cards are mainly from Amonkhet and Kaladesh (which has been renamed) with references to other planes mainly in the form of lands but its a vehicle centric set but i think it does it pretty well the teased 1 cost 13/13 vehicle is NOT worth crewing til the late game or else it just dies as soon as its crewed so it not that big a deal anyway onto major spoilers below the cut!
So i save the pics of the cards i found the most interesting and heres the cards i think will be problematic or just cool:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starting with the red green card i HOPE the "exhast" mechanic requires you to attack with a vehicle FIRST because even tho it costs 12 to use that ability thats... extremely good, i would say broken (but then again thats all theyve really been making hasnt it)
Anyway The Aetherspark also looks really cool and i dotn think will be too much of a problem besides that 'lifelink in the form of loyalty' ability but what im ACTUALLY upset about with this card is: WHY ISNT KARN AN ARTIFACT PLANESWALKER??????
Anyway the next card the ward on ALL artifacts (you control) is stupid and while in commander its fine and yeah its technically better than hexproof and shroud, if your playing an artifact deck (which is most of what this card is going into) a lot of those artifacts will be nigh impossible to remove without a boardwipe
4th is... well itll probably be really good considering the last time they did this with Roaming Throne but hey! Now any tribal deck can become a vehicle deck as well! Which think is really fun, might do this for pirates lol bc that makes the most sense
Basri is what i was talking about like bruh :( hes the soldier boi not the cat boi thats ajani :'(
Oh then cool lore thing THERES NEW AMONKHET GODS i believe when i read the article bc i was confused about amonkhet they said theyre introducing 2 new gods or something so to recap we have: Bontu, Oketra, Hazoret, Kefnet, Rhonas (as the primary 5 colors) the three corrupted gods who we dhould get a core set that goes back in time and shows us what they used to look like of The Locust, Scarab, and Scorpion gods, and now we have (thats confirmed so far): Sab-Sunen then a god we dont have his card of yet: Ketramose (according to the wizards article)
Oh and we got white zombies for amonkhet coming back with some legends for them too so thats fun can build a black and white zombie deck with a leader now (thats how i built my old decks picked a creature as the main guy, a legendary creature if i could and built around it altho i dont play much now but i have a few commander decks i did this with and am building a few more that dont have this philosophy bc i ran out of legends aka i lost a bunch of them somehow)

SUMMIT OF DIVISIONS (R.I.P Märchen & Pixel SyndicateEdition)

— (All) —
Here we go (here we go), east and west
Connecting divisions (divisions) with this microphone
Old and young, come together and make our voices a chorus
The battle is locals vs. Chuohku
Here we go (here we go), you and me
Right and left, me and you
Overcoming blood relations and troublesome connections
Anyway, this party, let's get it on
A night where shocking oaths crowd around
The no.1 mic that aims at our days
Let us drink and sing, get wired as we like
A party night limited to only one stage, make love
Hop, skip, and jump, taking the initiative asap
Let's get started
Reverberating sound and hearts
If we don't have fun, there's no point
Let's go!
— (Queen Card) —
Don’t be afraid, come closer, Baby
to a land where norms are forgotten, magic happens
They said, "don't you feel a little lonely living in your own world?"
But don't you  feel helpless living in other's worlds?
How can someone who looks like danger and sin
taste so good and holy just like the heavens?
The one that you sought, we’re making it hot
The land of dreams feels good to me
Come on in
— (Black Cat, Reiaki Suzubayashi) —
Sometimes I just need a break from my own thoughts
In my head, my thoughts twist and form into knots
You sleep to dream while I'm awake to live mine
I'm outta my mind, it's a dark and scary mind
— (Hex 13, Miku Shirazuki) —
In the dark two shadows reaching through
their hands meet and light spills in a flood like a
hundred gold urns pouring out the sun
All the way up up up in the air yo
— (Rush Hour, Anika Kiyozaki) —
Uh everyday I'm winnin’
Akihabara's lights never stay dimming
I'm aiming for the thoughts, I got your head spinnin'
Whether it's on the tracks or the clinic where you relax
The world now that you living in
is all just an illusion
Your strings have loosened Uh-huh
All hands on deck, Syndicate, raise your mics
Instincts take over
We swallow you whole,
— (Ready or Not, Shian Meizono) —
I found you gotchu in my line of sight
Are you flirting or trying to start a damn fight
How bad can a good girl get
Be careful with how you tread
Don’t run you will only get caught tired
— (Screen Shot, Makina Setsukura) —
See you yap yap with it Just the opening gambit
I heard you’re a player
Nice to meet you I’m the game
Enemies I keep slaying
Only way to win is to keep playing

You want a battle from me
I'll give you a war, it's like Beauty and Beast
You know I'll be the designer of your catastrophy
Go hard, take the mic,

Well think again, everything I oversee
Treat me like a joke, I'll run you over like it's funny
I'll laugh in your face. Bitch, my victory tastes like honey
— (Easy R, Ramuda Amemura) —
From Shibuya, Shinjuku, Hama and Bukuro
With Nagoya, Osaka, Minato, Akiba, we'll cause great fear
The iron rule is to stan while you still can
Today, it seems like around here is where we should run off
— (ill-DOC, Jakurai Jinguji) —
A warped rondo, an elaborate skit
A vaccine panacea overdose, end of examination
With the past, NO WAR
Let's change with the night's crescendo, checkmate
— (Tragic Comedy, Sasara Nurude) —
Final countdown of one thousand days
Held by the beat, this heart is steel
Fated for battle until we burn up
You're not allowed to stop this flow
— (Evil Monk, Kuko Harai) —
The anchor for these complicated guys
If it was a different day, we'd be taking each others' territory
Taking a mic in hand, deciding the last shot
I'll change this place into an energy vortex
— (All) —
Here we go (here we go), east and west

Today, Monday, November 25, 2024, I received my copy of "The Lineages of Change Tarot," which was a Kickstarter campaign which I had the honor and pleasure of pledging. When we bought this house, it came with 3 trees (two oriental arborvitae framing the front steps, and an eastern red cedar on the north end of the house, at the corner of the office). I planted my fig tree when we moved in. The winter of 2023 got ahead of me, and I was drowning. I couldn’t see the forest for the trees (read: weed jungle) anymore, and I realized we had to do something about it.
I hired a very nice local man to clean up the front yard, because it had become a bit of a jungle. Bind weed and summer cypress and 6 types of grass and a bunch of other things, most of which my plant app can’t identify. Thats fine - natural yards have weeds, and I want my pollinators and small animals to have a diverse mix of yard. I’ll obviously try to keep it more under control for the sake of the native plants, and work on the invasive ones.
My fig tree was very dead. So dead, in fact, that the mower blew it to smithereens.
As I was standing on the deck lamenting how much work I have to do, and realizing how brown my yard is, I realized there was something poking through the singular warped board on one end of the deck. Upon closer inspection, I realized it’s a baby mulberry tree. It’s currently under my deck, but I’ll be relocating it to a better suited spot in the yard.
The same day, I was checking on our firewood stores and taking stock of spider species, and noticed another baby tree in the empty shed. A Golden Locust.
A silver leaf elm has grown from the base of my China rose - the one that decided spring time was for losers, ironically. The elm is nearly on the ground, and thriving. Its roots undoubtedly spread beneath my house. I keep being told I can’t just dig it up and move it. Maybe not. I’m optimistic.
My mature eastern red cedar has a silver leaf elm growing tucked under its branches, coddled against it like an adopted child.
Maybe they’re not what I intended. Maybe the intentions I had don’t matter. A young shade tree, a baby fruit tree, and a native giant. I’m just happy they’re here.

Once again, having the yearly impulse to completely change/fuse/synthesize the Commander decks from the family and being stopped because there's No B/W/R Angel from Khaldeim about life gain and aristocrat effects. With some burn and enrage support included as well.
Like Xyris is just there, waiting for me, being a R/U/B monster from Ikoria thats about Tokens, Card Draw, Group Hug and some control and tempo. It would almost be too easy to combine my Locust God deck and my Intet deck into a Xyris deck, but there's no Mardu equivalent for my wife's Krav/Regna and Oros deck
