Purplish-grey eyes, with violet shadows under them that always seemed darker and more alluring after Emily had sat up to some unholy and un-Elizabethan hour completing a story or working out the skeleton of a plot
Emily’s most annoying feature imo. I chronically have violet eye bags but they sure as hell don’t make my eyes more alluring!! Except maybe to a raccoon!!

Virtual Classroom Software: A Powerful Tool for Enhanced Learning
Introduction:
The Digital Revolution in Education:
In the fast-paced and ever-changing digital era, the impact of information technology is not just limited to the way we work; it has also reshaped our approach to learning. With the integration of virtual classroom software and school management software, education and training have become more accessible, engaging, and user-friendly. This revolutionary change has led to significant growth in the worldwide e-learning market. The impact of virtual classrooms is profound and enduring, with the potential to redefine our traditional methods of teaching and learning. In this comprehensive exploration, we will take a closer look at what virtual classrooms are, their manifold benefits, and how they have the potential to revolutionize the field of education.
Understanding the Virtual Classroom:
The advent of advanced technology has made virtual classrooms a game-changer in the field of online learning. Incorporating modern software solutions like virtual classrooms and school management software, it provides students and teachers with an unparalleled educational experience, regardless of their location. The only requirement is a stable internet connection for both parties. Virtual classroom software takes care of the rest, providing a wide range of features like video and audio conferencing, digital whiteboards, access to learning materials, live chat support, and an array of teaching tools and controls. The primary objective of a virtual classroom is to recreate the traditional classroom experience in a virtual setting. It provides an environment where teachers can interact with students, monitor their progress, and offer personalized assistance, while students can learn, collaborate, and engage with their peers in real time. The software offers features such as video and audio conferencing, an online whiteboard, access to learning materials, live chat, and a suite of teaching tools and controls. Its main objective is to simulate the traditional classroom experience in an online setting.
The Multifaceted Benefits of Virtual Classroom Software:
Enhanced Collaboration:
In the past, collaborating between schools or organizations was difficult due to complex arrangements. Coordinating teachers and staff, travel, and scheduling was a time-consuming and costly process. However, virtual classroom software has made it easier by allowing uninterrupted communication and interaction between instructors and learners. Video conferencing is the key feature that enables collaborative engagement across geographical boundaries, making it possible for people to work together regardless of their location.
Improved Learning Processes:
Traditional educational institutions, particularly those in remote areas, often struggle with limited resources. Virtual classroom software transforms this scenario by enabling learners to access a global learning environment without leaving their physical classroom. Through real-time communication with experts from diverse fields and participation in remote seminars and classes, students can expand their horizons and enhance their knowledge retention. Additionally, virtual classroom software offers personalized learning, allowing learners to progress at their own pace, and reinforcing their understanding of subjects.
Accessibility:
Virtual classroom software democratizes education. Any learner with an internet connection and access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone can participate. This accessibility is particularly impactful for those living in rural areas or individuals who are physically constrained and unable to attend traditional classes. As a result, it promotes equal learning opportunities, regardless of geographic location or physical limitations.
Scalability:
One of the standout advantages of virtual classroom software is its scalability. It empowers educational institutions and organizations to customize the learning and teaching experience to suit the size of their audience and their skill levels. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for businesses, where training can be tailored to specific skill development needs. Unlike traditional classrooms, which require infrastructure expansion to accommodate growing numbers, virtual classrooms can accommodate larger groups effortlessly.
Affordability:
In contrast to traditional classrooms, virtual classroom software has demonstrated a remarkable ability to maintain cost-effectiveness. With the elimination of physical classrooms, expensive textbooks, and school supplies, virtual classrooms depend on digital tools and resources that are accessible at all times and from anywhere. This level of affordability has become a game-changer for educational institutions and businesses seeking to optimize their training programs.
Effectiveness:
Virtual classroom software is highly effective in comparison to traditional face-to-face education. The latter typically has a learning retention rate of 8% to 10%, while the former boasts a retention rate ranging from 25% to 60%. This substantial improvement is attributed to the personalization of teaching materials. With e-learning, learners have the freedom to progress at their own pace, revisit lectures as needed, and receive immediate feedback on their progress. This contributes to a more effective learning experience overall.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, virtual classroom software and school management software are powerful tools that provide numerous benefits to both learners and educators. These technologies have revolutionized education, making it accessible to a global audience. It's important to note that they don't replace teachers or educators, but rather enhance the teaching and learning processes, enabling students to achieve their full potential. As we continue to embrace the digital age, the potential of virtual classrooms to transform education and training remains a testament to the power of technology to shape the future of learning.

There is no such thing as AI.
How to help the non technical and less online people in your life navigate the latest techbro grift.
I've seen other people say stuff to this effect but it's worth reiterating. Today in class, my professor was talking about a news article where a celebrity's likeness was used in an ai image without their permission. Then she mentioned a guest lecture about how AI is going to help finance professionals. Then I pointed out, those two things aren't really related.
The term AI is being used to obfuscate details about multiple semi-related technologies.
Traditionally in sci-fi, AI means artificial general intelligence like Data from star trek, or the terminator. This, I shouldn't need to say, doesn't exist. Techbros use the term AI to trick investors into funding their projects. It's largely a grift.
What is the term AI being used to obfuscate?
If you want to help the less online and less tech literate people in your life navigate the hype around AI, the best way to do it is to encourage them to change their language around AI topics.
By calling these technologies what they really are, and encouraging the people around us to know the real names, we can help lift the veil, kill the hype, and keep people safe from scams. Here are some starting points, which I am just pulling from Wikipedia. I'd highly encourage you to do your own research.
Machine learning (ML): is an umbrella term for solving problems for which development of algorithms by human programmers would be cost-prohibitive, and instead the problems are solved by helping machines "discover" their "own" algorithms, without needing to be explicitly told what to do by any human-developed algorithms. (This is the basis of most technologically people call AI)
Language model: (LM or LLM) is a probabilistic model of a natural language that can generate probabilities of a series of words, based on text corpora in one or multiple languages it was trained on. (This would be your ChatGPT.)
Generative adversarial network (GAN): is a class of machine learning framework and a prominent framework for approaching generative AI. In a GAN, two neural networks contest with each other in the form of a zero-sum game, where one agent's gain is another agent's loss. (This is the source of some AI images and deepfakes.)
Diffusion Models: Models that generate the probability distribution of a given dataset. In image generation, a neural network is trained to denoise images with added gaussian noise by learning to remove the noise. After the training is complete, it can then be used for image generation by starting with a random noise image and denoise that. (This is the more common technology behind AI images, including Dall-E and Stable Diffusion. I added this one to the post after as it was brought to my attention it is now more common than GANs.)
I know these terms are more technical, but they are also more accurate, and they can easily be explained in a way non-technical people can understand. The grifters are using language to give this technology its power, so we can use language to take it's power away and let people see it for what it really is.

I've seen multiple people doing retrospectives on the LitRPG genre claim that the two major works that kicked off the rest of the genre were Sword Art Online and The Gamer. And I don't deny that those were definitely super influential, but I do wonder why those two get raised above all the others?
In specific, I definitely think The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor should be credited way more. And like, its not at all an obscure name - the site that most people associate with LitRPGs in EN spaces, Royal Road, is named after the series!
Especially because, when you look at that series, it's definitely way closer to what later litRPGs would look like. SAO may take place in a game world, but it doesn't care much for game mechanics - it cares much more for the vibe of playing old MMOs than tracking the characters' strength. And while The Gamer cares a lot more about tracking individual skills, it's honestly more of a urban fantasy thing - the protagonist's game mechanics stuff is pretty subordinate to that (though prevalent enough that I wouldn't rec it to someone who disliked LitRPGs.) Meanwhile LMS is exactly what you'd expect from the term litRPG - detailed discussion of character classes, stats, upgrades, levelling up, what have you.
And it came out in 2007 - far preceding the 2013 debut of The Gamer and the 2009 release of SAO's first volume. (Though technically SAO originally existed as a webnovel as far back as 2001; but I think at that point it was way too obscure to influence anybody).
I feel like in terms of influential pillars of the genre, between preceding basically every other major name, being super popular for it's time, and exemplifying a lot of the elements people both like and hate about the genre, it definitely deserves a mention in the genre history, right?
Though, the fact that both LMS and The Gamer are Korean works does make me wonder if they were working within an existing literary tradition that I am unaware of - as someone who doesn't speak the language I can only really talk about what was influential in EN spaces.

behaviorism in the new normal: adapting classroom strategies for online learning 💻
Behaviorist theories, such as classical conditioning (learning by association) and operant conditioning (rewards and punishment), are relatively straightforward to implement in face-to-face classes. Let me paint a picture for you:
Classical Conditioning. Imagine the routine where I always walk down the classroom aisle (conditioned stimulus). Whenever I see pieces of paper littered on the floor, I point at them (unconditioned stimulus). This behavior is consistently paired together every single meeting. Eventually, the students start picking up the littered papers (conditioned response) as soon as I walk down the aisle, anticipating my reaction.
Operant Conditioning. Long before the advent of online classes, teachers were encouraged to use our school’s Learning Management System (LMS). To motivate students to participate in discussion forums after class, I would reward the students who provided the best responses with chocolate bars (positive reinforcement).
Now, with the shift to online classes during the pandemic, I faced a daunting challenge in establishing new class routines.
Here are some strategies I’ve employed:
Repetition. Repetition has become my ally in video and textual presentations, helping students quickly form associations with the topic. By repeatedly asking students to share their insights on the topic, they start forming associations, leading to specific learning objectives. For example, before every lesson in asynchronous sessions (self-paced learning), I ask them to reflect on a quote from the previous lesson and relate it to the current lesson. This approach helped them understand how self-awareness (previous lesson) is connected to human development (current lesson).
Real-life Experiences as a Conditioned Stimulus. I frequently associate topics with real-life experiences. When students think about the lesson, they instantly relate it to an event they’ve experienced before. For example, our discussions on stress and coping are linked to the ongoing pandemic, making the lesson deeply personal and relevant.
Positive Reinforcement. I use rewards like “bragging rights” and “additional points” for formative activities (pre-lesson activities) to encourage student participation.
Recognition. I create visuals recognizing my students’ efforts through a “Discussion Board Hall of Fame” for outstanding discussion posts and “Top Kahoot Scorers” for those excelling in motivational activities.
These are just a few examples of how I’ve adapted behaviorist strategies for online classes.
Indeed, online classes have pushed us, as teachers, to our creative limits, compelling us to ensure that our students receive the quality education they deserve. Despite the challenges and the unfamiliarity of this “new normal,” we must find ways to adapt and thrive.
But amidst all this, remember to take care of yourselves, teachers!
Padayon!

“In May 2019, Claire Fox was elected as an MEP for Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party.[1,2] Fox was a writer for the website Spiked Online and was the founder of the Institute of Ideas (now the Academy of Ideas). She had also been a long-time member of the Revolutionary Communist Party (RCP) until its dissolution in 1996 and co-publisher of LM (previously Living Marxism and the journal of the RCP). In the same European Parliament elections, James Heartfield, another former RCP member and contributor to both LM and Spiked, challenged the seat of Yorkshire and the Humber for the Brexit Party, but was not elected.[3] In the British general election in December 2019, another seven Brexit Party candidates had previously been given a platform by Spiked (including former RCP member James Woudhuysen).[4] In addition to this, one of Boris Johnson’s advisors and co-author of the 2019 Conservative Party manifesto, Munira Mirza, had previously contributed to Spiked and worked for Fox’s Institute of Ideas.[5] The website itself saw Brexit as a demonstration of democracy against the ruling elites and had championed both the Brexit Party and Boris Johnson for their pursuit of Britain leaving the European Union. In August 2020, Fox was elevated to the House of Lords as a non-affiliated peer, viewed by some as another extension of the Johnson government’s ‘war on woke’.[6] Journalists, academics and political activists have increasingly referred to this as the RCP/LM/Spiked network (or similar variants, such as the LM network) and explored how the RCP grew into a series of interconnected organisations, publications and individuals in the 1990s and 2000s.[7] Part of the intrigue of this network is the trajectory of the leadership of the Revolutionary Communist Party almost en masse from ultra-left Trotskyism in the 1980s to right libertarianism in the 2010s. Originally, a splinter group called the Revolutionary Communist Tendency (until 1981), the RCT/RCP was regarded by many other groups on the left as sectarian and controversialist. After the party dissolved itself in 1996, several of the party’s leading members, including the leader Frank Furedi, have managed to develop a media profile, becoming regular pundits on television, on the radio, in the mainstream press and online. In recent times, it has been revealed that the US-based Charles Koch Foundation had given Spiked!’s US arm $300,000 ‘to produce public debates in the US about free speech’.[8] While this trajectory has been explored somewhat by journalists and bloggers, the history of the RCP has yet to be explored in depth by historians of British politics and the left.”

Well, it's first-day-of-new-semester's eve. I have put a lot of careful thought into how to dress myself in the coming weeks and--oh yeah--also my work. The first four weeks of my comp and poetry classes are mostly added to Canvas and ready to go. Ever since the pandemic I have set up my LMS like an online class even if my classes are in person. It's a lot of upfront work, but it's helpful to my students who end up missing classes bc of illness. I also like how it allows me to visually organize each class, and it lets my students reference all materials used during the entire semester. It also gives me a very clear idea of what we did every single class period, so that setting up future courses is easy. Ultimately, I think it's just more accessible, which is something I've been trying to be mindful of with regards to my teaching.
I did not get around to setting up a schedule for my Comps reading and writing, which is a direct result of not having a proper workweek last week. I will have to prioritize that this week and also set up a meeting with my advisor because I'm starting to spiral. I have a tremendous amount of work in front of me, and it is very scary and intimidating.
Luckily I will look good (to me). If nothing else.
Baby R is feeling better, at least. This part of my life is wiiiild--too busy and chaotic, but it's what I asked for. Even the things I didn't know to want have been given to me. So much has been taken away as well, so it's important to acknowledge times of abundance.

I’m officially out of textbook publishers I don’t want to [redacted].
Pearson is Pearson. There’s too much to name.
Wiley sued the Internet Archive at the height of the pandemic. Plus they keep endearing themselves by doing things like sending out videos advertising how accessible their products are... that aren’t subtitled and can’t have their size or speed adjusted.
And now McGraw-Hill completely dicked me over on LMS integration with no warning. A “Hey, heads up, absolutely nothing in your online class is going to work any more next semester!” would have been pretty neat!

Microlearning involves delivering content in short, bite-sized modules that focus on one concept at a time. This approach is highly effective in catering to the modern workforce's busy schedules and shorter attention spans. By breaking down complex topics into smaller chunks, microlearning enhances knowledge retention and improves the overall learning experience.
4. Gamification for Engagement:
Gamification is an innovative technique that leverages gaming elements, such as points, badges, and leaderboards, in non-gaming contexts like training. By incorporating gamification into the training process, employees are motivated to participate actively, compete with peers, and achieve learning milestones. This fosters a fun and engaging learning environment while ensuring effective knowledge transfer.
5. Provide Real-life Simulations:
Hands-on training through real-life simulations can significantly improve employees' practical skills and problem-solving abilities. Simulations allow learners to apply their knowledge in a risk-free environment, gaining confidence and expertise before implementing them in real-world scenarios. This approach is particularly valuable for technical and operational training.
6. Personalized Learning Paths:
Every employee has different learning preferences and varying skill levels. Offering personalized learning paths ensures that individuals receive training content tailored to their specific needs and interests. This approach enhances employee satisfaction and results in more effective skill development.
7. Adopt Level Up 360:
Level Up 360 is a cutting-edge enterprise solution offered by CCS Learning Academy and is an excellent addition to any organization's training process.
