Why I don't talk about my pain

If you know someone who has had a chronic illness for a very long time chances are that you have noticed they don’t talk about it anymore.  In the beginning they never shut up about it, and now they are silent on the issue.  Don’t assume this means they are doing better, they are not miraculously cured.  It only means they have given up all hope that by talking about someone will understand what they are going through.  It is so hard when you have a chronic illness.   You struggle to keep up with the healthy people in your life, you struggle against the pain and exhaustion, and you struggle to keep your sanity.  But the biggest struggle is speaking one language while everyone else hears another.  So if you have someone in your life who has a chronic illness, hug them and tell them that you can never understand what they are going through, but that you are there for them no matter how long it takes.  You may find for the first time in a long time you are finally speaking the same language.

I can't remember a time when my body wasn't in pain

When I wasn't waiting in a doctor's office

When I wasn't waiting for lab results

When I wasn't wondering if I should go to the hospital

As is the life of a chronic illness

Also, I wonder what it’s like to not be in constant pain.

I literally cannot remember the feeling.

My constant companion

Pain evolves over time, at first it seems as though you will never survive.  Then it becomes an unwelcome houseguest that never leaves.  Finally it becomes your constant companion, it never leaves you alone but you become used to it, even dare I say you depend on it.  However unpleasant, it becomes part of you, after all you are now a pain patient and you have built your life around it, it seeps into the fabric of your identity.  It sets roots, it grows, it changes over time and it’s here to stay.

A little understanding

Believe me when I say that I am acutely aware of the impact my illness has on others and because of this I carry more guilt than you can ever imagine, so it’s not necessary to remind me of how my illness has inconvenienced you.  Every time you complain about what I can’t do it crushes my spirit.  Whatever achievements I make are negated with every moan and groan, every sigh of inpatients, every roll of the eyes.  I am aware, I understand so please give me space, compassion and understanding.
