davey is the guy who’s been a dungeon master since he was 13. he owns all of the d&d books and has subscriptions to d&d beyond and homebrews incredible campaigns for his friends and makes lore for his NPCs and owns at least 30 sets of dice. d&d is his special interest and he loves using his words to create worlds beyond imagination.

jack is the guy who only starts playing d&d because his boyfriend is a dungeon master. he joins a campaign halfway through the semester and he’s way in over his head but after one 3-hour session he’s hooked. he yaps to davey about his character ideas and draws everyone’s characters because he can see them so Vividly in his head. he asks really specific questions about the settings and the maps and he loves all of the lore that davey spins. he doesn’t expect to be a nerd but by god he is and it’s all davey’s fault

modern newsies AU where davey writes books and jack illustrates for them

I'm indecisive so..

I'll probably try to write all of these at some point, but which one should I start first?

Newsies AU where it's 1899 but none of the boys are newsies; they have other period-appropriate jobs instead.

Jack is a stableboy. He mucks out the stalls and sings to the horses while he brushes them.

Crutchie is a bootblack, so he doesn't have to walk too much.

Albert is a telegraph messenger. His crew is feuding with the Western Union messengers, who knock them off their bikes when they see them.

Buttons and Finch both work in a textile factory. Finch is always getting in trouble for going too slow. Last year, Buttons caught two fingers on his right hand in a machine and lost them, but he's healed up now and is faster than Finch again.

Elmer helps his ma and siblings roll cigarettes in their tenement.

Mush repairs shoes.

Romeo works at a laundry next to a brothel. All the ladies are really nice to him when they see him.

Specs is the lookout for a gang of older boys who are housebreakers. They give him a cut of their take. He has been in the Refuge six times.

Jojo is apprenticed to an illiterate jeweler, and does the books. His boss beats him if he thinks he's made a mistake.

Racetrack is an oyster shucker. He has never seen a pearl.

Albert seems to know everyone in Lower Manhattan, but most of the other boys are lonely. Buttons and Finch aren't allowed to talk at work. Kids steer clear of Specs. Crutchie once saved Romeo from getting soaked by some toughs and now he sometimes says hi when he sees Crutchie set up on the corner, but none of the rest of them are even friends.

This is from the medieval/fantasy-esque AU that I'm doing with @thatoneandlonelyemo2005. Most of it is concentrated on Bumswiftery at first, but also this is set in the same universe, we're just talking about what everyone would do in a world with magic and Kings and kingdoms :)

It will also go into a fake marriage AU for Sprace due to plot and cultural reasons I am making up but who cares if we get fake marriage turning into real feelings.

hello nobody asked but here are more unsolicited Newsies Uno ReVerse thoughts that I can NOT get out of my head

Crutchie is Jack’s brother, but he never expects him to go out selling with his disability

When Les and Davey meet Crutchie for the first time, Les tells Jack something borderline offensive like “Why didn’t you tell me youse had a little brother with a bum leg? Between my face and his leg, we coulda been making MILLIONS this whole time!”

Davey is appropriately embarrassed and apologizes profusely on his brother’s behalf

Davey is obsessed with Portland, Oregon (it’s his Santa Fe) somewhere he can get away from the heated claustrophobia of the city, lock himself away in a cabin and finally put down on paper the little stories he tells himself to get through the day

Jack volunteers to go to Brooklyn with Davey

Les is the one hauled away to the refuge after Seize The Day

David and Katherine are the ones who hit it off, and Jack is The Pining One (TM)

Post-Rally, the Something To Believe In scene starts off with Kath confronting Davey and i don’t have details but I do have this piece of dialogue:

“If you weren’t a girl, you’d find out exactly why they call me Mouth.” “I think your inability to shut up might have something to do with it.” “No, it’s because when I hear someone talking about something they have no idea about, I aim for the mouth. And I don’t miss.”

And then Kath kisses him and Davey’s like omg??? Do I…..??? Like girls??? (Bc living in a house full of boys there’s no WAY he doesn’t already know he’s gay (umbrella term))

This Affects Post Canon bc I said so. Fun Post Canon Stuff (it’s fun for ME. Probably not for yall. You’ll call it angst or something):

Jack catches a Davey and Katherine kiss when they win the strike and it kind of makes him Unwell

Davey gets a job writing for The World

Jack has a hard time adjusting going back to school, can’t focus, realizes he’s happiest when he’s with the newsies (and Davey)

He brings up to Medda the idea of dropping out to get a job. She agrees because she sees how unhappy he is and school really just isn’t I for him

Kath gets him a job as an artist at The World

This means he has to see Davey and Kath Together Every Day and it makes him even more Unwell (although he loves the art part of it!)

Davey notices this because he is Davey

Because he is Davey and is the smartest man in the room but also the biggest idiot on the planet, he completely misconstrues the reason Jack is Being Weird

So Davey invites Jack to hang out one on one, without Katherine and Jack accepts at first but it gets harder and harder and Davey is more engrained in his life than ever and he just can’t do it

So Jack stops interacting with Davey at work, blows him off outside of it, and generally starts distancing himself and Davey is totally clueless

Finally, he goes to Katherine and complains about it and the conversation goes something like this:

“I thought spending time alone with him, away from you—no offense—would make him feel better. You know, remind him that no matter what’s going on with you and me that he’s still my friend.”

“I think that’s part of the problem, Davey.”

“I mean yeah. Truth be told if he and I weren’t friends I doubt you and I would even be an issue. I think he’d just go for it.”

“…… What?”

“I think he’d ask you on a date outright, instead of feeling guilty about his feelings for you.”

“….. oh my god you fucking idiot.”

Don’t ask me how this is resolved because i have absolutely no idea :)

RIGHT OK SO FIRST THINGS FIRST: guys this au feels like a lovechild between me n pidge im not even kidding. i love everything about it and pidge thank YOU for all of the input

ANYWAY:

jack and davey are both sophomores in [insert fictional cliche college here] college, around 20 years old.

jack is a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, and is pretty actively involved in the fraternity. he and his friends (no newsies) are the quintessential frat boys. he pledged, he went through hazing and initiation, he goes to date parties with sorority girls and goes to formals and has chapter meetings every week. he’s immersed in frat life because he thrives on connection. he likes it enough. it’s fine. it’s not really fulfilling the way he needs it to be, but that’s okay.

davey, however, is the furthest away from frat life. he lives in the dorms- at least until he and his friends move into a little house off-campus after sophomore year- and is still an active student, just not in greek life. he’s in the student council for his college, he’s in the queer activist organization on campus, he takes a fuck ton of courses each semester- he’s a successful student. he’s also incredibly visibly queer. he wears makeup, he lives in platform doc martens, he wears weird jewelry and skirts and develops a much more alternative style as the year goes on, which jack witnesses.

the important thing here is: jack is straight until he’s not.

the friendship is just something that kind of happens. in that speech class, they’re paired by the professor to do a ten minute speech debating opposite sides of an issue together, and they meet outside of class three times to iron out the details- but each meeting ends up getting longer and longer because they get stuck talking to each other instead of working. one meeting ends with jack having to make a ten minute walk in six minutes to avoid being late for chapter because he was so enchanted by his conversation with the weird queer with the big smile.

and the friendship progresses even after the project. they get closer and closer despite being so different and jack finds himself excited for class every week because he knows he gets to walk with davey to the union. and maybe it’s kind of nervewracking, and maybe his friends make jokes about jack walking with a queer when they see it, but being around davey makes it worth it.

long story short, this is a fic about jack growing into himself. he finds his family in davey and his friends- racer, charlie, kath, al, etc.- and comes to terms with his own identity. this is a love letter to the queer community and focuses a lot of first loves and found family and i love it SO much
