Live in St. Kilda by Kid Congo Powers & the Near Death Experience
On November 9th, 2019 — only a few years ago, and yet somehow another era altogether in the context of recent human experience — the irrepressible Kid Congo Powers, equal parts post-punk journeyman, visionary, prankster and icon, performed in the Australian city of St. Kilda, having accepted an invitation from Kim Salmon of veritable Aussie noise institution The Scientists, to celebrate the publication of his autobiography, Nine Parts Water, One Part Sand: Kim Salmon and the Formula for Grunge. Lacking a sufficient budget to bring his esteemed longtime collaborators the Pink Monkey Birds to the southern hemisphere, Powers was backed on this occasion by the Near Death Experience, veterans of gritty, saturnine acts like Crime and the City Solution and These Immortal Souls, who also happen to be previous tour mates of the Pink Monkey Birds. 
This impromptu collaboration, billed fittingly as Kid Congo Powers & the Near Death Experience, is documented in all of its wanton, ephemeral glory on the delightful live show document, Live in St. Kilda, with impressive clarity and crisp high fidelity. While the recording sometimes feels almost too clean to suit these raw, spirited interpretations of several generations of seminal scuzz rock — including tracks drawn from the Pink Monkey Birds’ and Near Death Experience’s cheeky repertoires, as well as covers encompassing the resoundingly influential oeuvres of Powers’ former bands The Gun Club and The Cramps, and a curatorially-eclectic range of other inspirations — the unctuous, pungent charms of this flamboyant performance nonetheless transcend its sometimes overly streamlined edges.
The songs themselves rollick and grind with garage rock authenticity in the venerable tradition of labels like In the Red and Crypt. In this band’s take on East LA Chicano rock pioneers Thee Midniters’ reimagining of the cheerily morbid children’s campfire song “I Found a Peanut,” Powers’ raucously declamatory vocals surf keyboardist Edwina Preston’s surging Farfisa (?) swells and drummer Clare Moore’s delirious drum fills. It’s a performance that might have mesmerized British Invasion-addled teenyboppers decades ago. The band’s rendition of the Pink Monkey Birds’ “Black Santa” has The Cramps’ brashly confrontational, unapologetically neanderthal snarl, with Preston’s spooky Moog accents and guitarist Harry Howard’s overamplified, indestructible riffs setting a tawdry, psychotronic go-go tone that would make Russ Meyer proud.
“La Llorona” is the Pink Monkey Birds’ retelling of the proto-Gothic Hispanic American legend, in which a woman who drowned her own children in a fit of romantic rage roams the coastline eternally, in a tortured state of unresolved pique. Here and elsewhere, while Powers does have a boisterous set of rock n’ roll pipes, the recording, and perhaps the performance itself, might be more compelling with a bit more murk, and thus, enigma shrouding the vocals. It may be as simple as pushing them further back into the mix. But throughout the record, the band’s atmospherics lend gravitas to the overall effect. Here, it’s the spidery No-Wave guitar lines, snaking out like shivery tendrils.  
Nonetheless, Powers’ endearingly manic singing, and his effervescent stage banter carry the show throughout. He’s a guttersnipe Elvis fronting a kindler, gentler incarnation of AmRep and Sub Pop label mainstays like the late, lamented Dwarves and The Hellacopters, in a performance that evinces, and executes a more expansive range of genre interests, but funnels them exuberantly through the garage idiom, as in the band’s cover of The Shangri-Las’ “Sophisticated Boom Boom,” and the bludgeoning, Dead Moon-invoking fuzztone static of Cramps cover “Garbage Man.” 
Does this music have the literary, lyrical aspirations of the Bad Seeds, or The Gun Club’s heady cultural cross-pollination? No. The set list is appropriate given the festive nature of the event, but it can feel skin deep thematically at times. Here and there, the vocal phrasing is clumsy, the arrangements verge on pastiche. But the band’s spirit cannot be contained, and nor can its capacity to surprise, which seeps periodically through these consummately professional, airtight renditions—like the Kraftwerkian churn that drives Suicide cover “Diamonds, Fur Coats, Champagne,” with its ominous vibraphonic plinks — a film score threatening to careen off the rails. 
And it’s the way the band, and Powers especially, set the interstitial moments off in particular, what Powers has described as a band’s artistic ethos, the distinctive style, the inimitable panache inherent in any larger-than-life rock act, that set this gig apart. Like Powers’ purgative burp, punctuating this one-off combo’s version of the NDE’s own “When He Finds Out.” Or the way he teases out the syllables in a sensuous neo-noir drawl in introducing “Diamonds…,” like a pulp fiction archetype’s incantatory reverie while on a sun-baked tear over a freshly paved two lane blacktop reeking of tar. By the time he refreshingly lampoons the idea of a stagey encore after a swaggering cover of The Gun Club’s “Sex Beat,” we’ve been long since won over.
Must have been a day to remember.

Travel back [...] a few hundred years to before the industrial revolution, and the wildlife of Britain and Ireland looks very different indeed. 
Take orcas: while there are now less than ten left in Britain’s only permanent (and non-breeding) resident population, around 250 years ago the English [...] naturalist John Wallis gave this extraordinary account of a mass stranding of orcas on the north Northumberland coast [...]. If this record is reliable, then more orcas were stranded on this beach south of the Farne Islands on one day in 1734 than are probably ever present in British and Irish waters today. [...]
Other careful naturalists from this period observed orcas around the coasts of Cornwall, Norfolk and Suffolk. I have spent the last five years tracking down more than 10,000 records of wildlife recorded between 1529 and 1772 by naturalists, travellers, historians and antiquarians throughout Britain and Ireland, in order to reevaluate the prevalence and habits of more than 150 species [...].
In the early modern period, wolves, beavers and probably some lynxes still survived in regions of Scotland and Ireland. By this point, wolves in particular seem to have become re-imagined as monsters [...].
Elsewhere in Scotland, the now globally extinct great auk could still be found on islands in the Outer Hebrides. Looking a bit like a penguin but most closely related to the razorbill, the great auk’s vulnerability is highlighted by writer Martin Martin while mapping St Kilda in 1697 [...].
[A]nd pine martens and “Scottish” wildcats were also found in England and Wales. Fishers caught burbot and sturgeon in both rivers and at sea, [...] as well as now-scarce fishes such as the angelshark, halibut and common skate. Threatened molluscs like the freshwater pearl mussel and oyster were also far more widespread. [...]

Predators such as wolves that interfered with human happiness were ruthlessly hunted. Authors such as Robert Sibbald, in his natural history of Scotland (1684), are aware and indeed pleased that several species of wolf have gone extinct:
There must be a divine kindness directed towards our homeland, because most of our animals have a use for human life. We also lack those wild and savage ones of other regions. Wolves were common once upon a time, and even bears are spoken of among the Scottish, but time extinguished the genera and they are extirpated from the island.
The wolf was of no use for food and medicine and did no service for humans, so its extinction could be celebrated as an achievement towards the creation of a more civilised world. Around 30 natural history sources written between the 16th and 18th centuries remark on the absence of the wolf from England, Wales and much of Scotland. [...]

In Pococke’s 1760 Tour of Scotland, he describes being told about a wild species of cat – which seems, incredibly, to be a lynx – still living in the old county of Kirkcudbrightshire in the south-west of Scotland. Much of Pococke’s description of this cat is tied up with its persecution, apparently including an extra cost that the fox-hunter charges for killing lynxes:
They have also a wild cat three times as big as the common cat. [...] It is said they will attack a man who would attempt to take their young one [...]. The country pays about £20 a year to a person who is obliged to come and destroy the foxes when they send to him. [...]
The capercaillie is another example of a species whose decline was correctly recognised by early modern writers. Today, this large turkey-like bird [...] is found only rarely in the north of Scotland, but 250–500 years ago it was recorded in the west of Ireland as well as a swathe of Scotland north of the central belt. [...] Charles Smith, the prolific Dublin-based author who had theorised about the decline of herring on the coast of County Down, also recorded the capercaillie in County Cork in the south of Ireland, but noted: This bird is not found in England and now rarely in Ireland, since our woods have been destroyed. [...] Despite being protected by law in Scotland from 1621 and in Ireland 90 years later, the capercaillie went extinct in both countries in the 18th century [...].

Sure! There's a lot...
'Still Here AU' Headcanons:
At first the men, through the shock of the transformation, did act how they do in game.
Gibbo, Trots, Muir, Addair and Rennick are the only ones who got infected.
Caz was able to bring Trots back first in the laundry room when he tricked him to look at his own reflection.
Muir was the easiest to bring back because he's still aloof - even more so - because he had no idea he turned. Innes was able to talk to him.
Addair was shown a picture of his son who he's very close to.
Finlay and Douglas brought Gibbo back by talking about his mum, son and late wife.
For Rennick, it turns out he never lost control of himself and was just pissed for getting infected.
Roper was able to avoid infection from Rennick and got a call out to Cadal for rescue. Archie also flew out to personally ask for help.
Brodie won the darts.
After being rescued, everyone, including those who aren't infected, have to live in a military base on a Scottish Island. Maybe St. Kilda.
Military blew up the rig but it didn't bring the men back to their human forms.
Lots of experiments and interviews until the military was satisfied no one was going to get hurt.
Caz and the others who didn't touch the parasite were offered to go home. Some did but a few stayed, working on rotation to leave for home before returning.
Huge company coverup and pay-outs to the families but NDAs galore.
There's so much more I want to say about the families but we'd be here all day...

sooo funny story. when méabh first got the script for her bonus episode of MA, she asked if she could make some edits to better reflect her Irish background, given that the history of werewolves in that ep was drawing heavily on Irish culture and history. i was super excited to have her work on it, and she ended contributing so much wonderful stuff that she has a co-writing credit on that ep.

And Alex’s heart doesn’t spread itself out in his chest, and he doesn’t have to grip the edge of the settee to steady himself. Because that’s what he would do if he were here in this palace to fall in love with Henry, and not just continuing this thing where they fly across the world to touch each other and don’t talk about it. That’s not why he’s here. It’s not.
And he does understand, really. He loves Henry, and it’s nothing new. He’s been falling in love with Henry for years, probably since he first saw him in glossy print on the pages of J14, almost definitely since Henry pinned Alex to the floor of a medical supply closet and told him to shut the hell up. That long. That much.
“I fucking love you, okay?” Alex half yells, finally, irreversibly. Henry goes very still against the mantelpiece. Alex watches him swallow, watches the muscle that keeps twitching in his jaw, and feels like he might shake out of his skin. “Fuck, I swear. You don’t make it fucking easy. But I’m in love with you.”
He’s cut off mid-sentence because Alex has stopped in the middle of the corridor and yanked him backward into a kiss.
“Hello,” Henry says when they break apart. “What was that for?” “I just, like.” Alex shrugs. “Really love you."
“Seriously,” he says. Henry’s looking back at him, beautiful and vital and heartsick and still, always, the person Alex is willing to risk ruining his life for. “I hate this so much. I know. But we’re gonna do it together. And we’re gonna make it work. You and me and history, remember? We’re just gonna fucking fight. Because you’re it, okay? I’m never gonna love anybody in the world like I love you. So, I promise you, one day we’ll be able to just be, and fuck everyone else."
All at once, Alex is in love all over again. He wraps the tie once around the back of his hand and reels Henry in and kisses him like he never has to stop. Which—he remembers, and laughs into Henry’s mouth—he doesn’t.

“Hi, love,” he hears Henry say quietly, privately, right into the hair above his ear, and Alex’s breath forgets how to do anything but laugh helplessly.
“You really are a complete idiot if you believe that,” Henry hisses, the note balled in his fist. “When have I ever, since the first instant I touched you, pretended to be anything less than in love with you? Are you so fucking self-absorbed as to think this is about you and whether or not I love you, rather than the fact I’m an heir to the fucking throne? You at least have the option to not choose a public life eventually, but I will live and die in these palaces and in this family, so don’t you dare come to me and question if I love you when it’s the thing that could bloody well ruin everything.”
“When I was younger,” Henry says, “I had this very elaborate idea of taking somebody I loved here and standing inside the chapel, that he’d love it as much as I did, and we’d slow dance right in front of the Blessed Mother. Just a ... daft pubescent fantasy.”
It is, indeed, bullshit. It’s all I can do not to pack a bag and be gone forever. Perhaps I could live in your room like a recluse. You could have food sent up for me, and I’ll be lurking in disguise in a shadowy corner when you answer the door. It’ll all be very dreadfully Jane Eyre. The Mail will write mad speculations about where I’ve gone, if I’ve offed myself or vanished to St. Kilda, but only you and I will know that I’m just sprawled in your bed, reading books and feeding myself profiteroles and making love to you endlessly until we both expire in a haze of chocolate sauce. It’s how I’d want to go.
Henry’s jaw is tight, but it’s not anger, only fear. Alex can see on his face an expression he recognizes: Henry wondering if it’s safe to accept the love offered to him, and wanting desperately to take it regardless. He puts his arm around her, lets her kiss his cheek.
In the corridor of Buckingham Palace, as soon as the door has shut behind them, they fall sideways into a tapestry on a wall, breathless and delirious and laughing, cheeks wet. Henry pulls Alex close and kisses him, whispers, “I love you I love you I love you,” and it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter if anyone sees.

Why isn't John/David/Cecil/Obituary Writer/etc here?
I'm specifically excluding narrators who are also primary characters in the story. There are a lot of really good unreliable main character POVs, and some that are very, very popular. There are also a LOT of found footage / "documentary" shows, so the pool of "main character who is technically also the narrator" is monstrously large. This is for narrators who have things to say about the story but are moderately to severely removed from it. You'll notice I've also excluded the Documentarian from The White Vault, because by the time she's commenting on the story, she's also a main character.
Madeleine can stay because she's very polite.
Madeleine the mouse
Madeleine doesn't exactly serve a narrative so much as she plates and seasons it before bringing it out. Part plot device, part confidante, and all bohemian authoress. But please, consider the other candidates long and hard before you vote. She's not really too unreliable, she's just incredibly biased.
The Voice of HartLife
You have to be a special kind of unreliable for one of your characters to break down the fourth wall into your recording studio to kick the shit out of you.
The Historian

Yes, I know it's not really confirmed. That's what unreliable narration is all about. But what could be more reliable than the literal word of god on the puny machinations of his flock? :) :) :) Also he's voiced by Alisdair Stuart, our dad.
The Malevolent Patreon Hastur
...is specifically not included, because a) people are going to think I'm talking about John, and b) brand recognition is going to skew the whole thing, as if Madeleine isn't going to sweep for that very reason. But I'm mentioning him here because of the time he made people so angry that the actual real live writer had to come out and remind them that this is a fictional character. iykyk.

4th March 1890 saw the opening of the Forth Rail Bridge or to give it the correct title The Forth Bridge.
Before 1890 the only direct route between Queensferry and North Queensferry in the east of Scotland was the ferry across the Firth of Forth. The crossing was slow and often dangerous and the four ferries, Queen Margaret, Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots and Sir William Wallace, were sometimes prevented from sailing by the weather.
When the railways arrived a ferry further downstream, from Granton to Burntisland, was used to transport goods from Edinburgh to Fife. But a more efficient means of crossing was required and so Thomas Bouch designed a suspension bridge.
Work started on the first pier at Inchgarvie but it was abandoned after another structure by Bouch of a similar design, the Tay Bridge, collapsed in 1879. A new design by John Fowler and Benjamin Baker, incorporating three double cantilevers, was commissioned and work commenced in 1883.
Over the course of the next seven years almost 51,000 Tons of steel was used in the construction of the Forth Bridge (or Forth Rail Bridge as it is often known). On 4 March 1890 the bridge was officially opened by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) who drove in the last of the 6,500,000 rivets. The total cost of the project was £3,200,000 and at least 57 lives.
Three 100m tall towers support the 2.5km structure and the two track railway is carried at a height of 48.2m above the Firth of Forth. With main spans of 521m, the Forth Bridge was, at the time of its construction, the world’s largest cantilever bridge. To this day it still ranks second.
Last year the bridge became the sixth Scottish landmark to be awarded Unesco World Heritage Site status.Scotland's other World Heritage Sites are New Lanark, St Kilda, the Old and New Towns in Edinburgh, Neolithic Orkney and the Antonine Wall.
The award puts it alongside the Pyramids of Egypt, the great Wall of China and the Sydney Opera House in terms of cultural significance.

This is a portland sheep. They come from Dorset and are extremely rare. They're also born russet coloured and are extremely cute.

This is a Lonk. They're also known as gritstone and rough fell sheep. They are my local breed of sheep and this one looks uncannily like my village emblem.

These are Hebridean sheep. They one of several breeds that can grow multiple sets of horns. They're quite small as sheep go. Island breeds apparently often are.

These are Soy sheep. From what I remember theyre one of the oldest breeds of sheep and also one of the smallest. They're descended from the population of feral sheep of St Kilda

These are Welsh mountain sheep and they are the sheepiest looking sheep that ever did sheep. They are perfect essence of sheep.

They are magnificent.
The mountains of Wales are home to several varieties of sheep in addition to the white fluffy examples.
There's also the Balwen black

And the badger faced Welsh mountain. There's probably more. Wales is, after all notorious for its sheep.
There's all sorts of weird and wonderful varieties of sheep anyway so their is obviously not going to be an expensive entry of sheep breeds of the world. Apparently Pakistan has more breeds of sheep than any other country with the exception of China. I might make a post about some of the more outlandish looking breeds of livestock at some point, this post is more of a reminder of the varieties I want to base a few sculptures on.
