I really need danmei recs. On my knees in the lowest bow begging for recs. Stuff like Liu Yao, SVSSS, and Little Mushroom are what I'm looking for.
Funny at first, full of wit, but later becomes so heartwrenching it lives with you for months after. If you've read stuff like this, please recommend.

op who r the guys in ur header,,, they look so cute,, i kinda wanna check em out too,, love, fellow shizunfucker enjoyer
AH heads up it's NOT Shizunfucker centric I'm afraid. the shizunfucking is merely background information. THERE IS HOWEVER SHIXIONG FUCKING
the header is official art of Liu Yao (or the complicated title Liu yao: Revitalization of the Fu Yao Sect). written by priest
it's very much found family dynamics and priest's usual dry humor. it's one of my favourite novels right after qi ye! it is xianxia and I highly recommend if you like the bitchxbitch format.
there's just something about watching these five kids go through various traumas and tribulations and then come out the other side changed and completely broken and yet their level of spite for each other remains ever-present ❤️
for when you pick it up because you have to
I'm over playing the romance btw it's THERE obviously but my god do they bitch and moan the entire time just to get there AND THEN FOREVER AFTER too

Thanks for answering my ask.....if you don't mind me asking (again), who are your favorite romantic relationship's couples in books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series (can be canon or non-canon)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....
Hi again! No, thank you for asking! This was a fun ask to receive! 🌺
Sephiroth/Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII, non-canon): Most extreme case of 'never meet your idols' lol Ah, the homoeroticism of being mortal enemies :) I enjoy the poetry of Cloud, sixteen years old and three whole ounces of whoop ass, stabbing and throwing the man he used to consider his hero into a mako pit. Sephiroth obsessively haunting Cloud like a fucked up ghoul and constantly trying to girlboss gatekeep gaslight his way to complete world domination is also very fun to me. Sephiroth latching onto Cloud's memories of him as a way to keep his own identity of self...Also, I simply cannot get over Sephiroth looking at the man who killed him with BEDROOM EYES and spewing the most homoerotic shit imaginable (like, what do you mean "don't deny me, embrace me"!!! is this a game to you!??!). Anyway, I just think they're neat :)
Yan Xiaohan/Fu Shen (Golden Terrace, canon): All time favorite! Political rivals to power couple! I love these two so much. They're so romantic, their affection felt like sugar injected straight into my veins haha. I can't even come up with a single thing I love about them because I simply love everything about them! They're peak romance?? Listen, if you are interested in novels set in a historical setting, I am holding your hands and BEGGING you to purchase Golden Terrace. It's such a good novel, you won't regret it!
Yan Zhengming/Cheng Qian (Liu Yao: The Revitalization of Fuyao Sect, canon): Now, these two! No matter, no matter what, I always go back to these two. This is one of my comfort ships, mostly because they are so entertaining! Their characters are so different, yet at their core, they have the same values and goal, so it is very fun to watch how these two's clashing personalities actually compliment each other. Plus, they're just very funny, okay?? PRIEST is a comedian lol
Xie Jingxing/Shen Miao (The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage, canon): The epitome of couples who scheme together stay together! Their evolution was gradual and so satisfying to me. I enjoyed how they went from scheming acquaintences who could barely stand each other (like, I know for a fact that my girl Shen Miao fantasized having Xie Jingxing dragged off to be executed for the unforgivable crime of being a meddling annoyance—deserved lol) to allies with grudging respect towards each other and a common goal to a devoted power couple who brought a country to its knees. Xie Jingxing's constant sneaking into Shen Miao's bedroom dead into the night to plot/banter/play qi/press her buttons until she's gnashing her teeth is something i remember very fondly lol.

Of Priest, the novel I've enjoyed the most was Liu Yao. I have to try to read Priest because it gets really difficult between trying to muddle through the translations and the distant pov + somewhat flat secondary charas + the usual cnovel convoluted plot, so if the MC doesnt get to me... But in Liu Yao I really liked the main chara, and his love interest, and the plot et all, even though it had its usual priest failings.
Also the themes, the fact that ascension doesn't exist in the story, that it's simply getting to the point were you can voluntarily let go of life and be one with the universe made a lot of sense with the Taoist background of the cultivation setting. Plus the constant dunking on cultivators as a whole.
Also there is the thing we're Cheng Qian and Yan Zhengming team up to lead the others, and also the tragedy of those 100 years, and the fact the two know each other since there were teen horrors, and also. At one point early on Cheng Qian is brushing Yan Zhengming hair and he puts a flower on him and look, I'm weak to that xD

The extra bonus stories in danmei absolutely gut me. What do the authors put in those, it's like they make them as sad as possible.
The first time I read Scum Villain's Self Saving System, I made it through without crying. But then I read Poem of the Bamboo Branch, and Shen Jiu's story, and Airplane's Fortuitous Encounter which gave me one of my all-time favorite lines:
"It’s just…
It’s just.
It’s just that he really, truly loved this story he’d written."
Or the absolute rollercoaster of emotions that were the extras in Liu Yao.
God, I love those books.

C-Novel Reading List
Are you new to the world of Chinese web-novels and don’t know where to start?
Maybe you’ve read a few and don’t know what to read next?
Do you wish there was place that had an interactive collection of c-novels that you can filter by genre and translation status, has information about the novels and links of where to read them?
May I present.... Shen-Daozhang’s C-Novel Reading List
I’m a librarian irl, and I love making lists of media. I also love Chinese web novels, and friends often ask me for recommendations, or for help finding where to read a novel. I also wanted a place for myself where I could remember what I thought about novels that I’d read. But I wanted it to be more than just a long text post list with links. I wanted it to be pretty! And I wanted it to be filterable by genre and translation status, and some other factors too.
So, to that end, I decided to make a interactive libguide list here on tumblr. I then decided that instead of just keeping it to myself and my friends after putting in all that work, it might be a resource that’s helpful to other people! Hence this post!
In addition to the list being filterable by genre, translation status, and whether it’s a good first read or one of my personal favorites, in each novel's description you can easily see how many chapters it is, its genre, if there are any adaptations, a quick summary- and, if I've read it, my thoughts. I have also included a link of where to read it, as well as links to my own tumblr posts and reblogs about the book, because if you're like me you're influenced to pick up a novel by seeing what it seems like through tumblr posts.
This is a perpetual WIP, so if you find any broken links, or think there’s a novel I should include, please let me know!
As of right now, the list includes (in no particular order) :
Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong - Scum Villain's Self-Saving System Mo Dao Zushi - Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation Tian Guan Ci Fu - Heaven Official’s Blessing Erha He De Bai Mao Shizun - Husky and His White Cat Shizun Yuwu - Remnants of Filth Bing An Ben - Casefile Compendium Qian Qiu - Thousand Autumns Wushuang - Peerless Chenghua Shisi Nian - Fourteenth Year of the Chenghua Emperor / Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty Qi Ye - Lord Seventh Tian Ya Ke - Faraway Wanderers Sha Po Lang Lie Huo Jiao Chuo - Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire Can Ci Pin - The Defectives / Imperfections Liu Yao - The Revitalization of Fu Yao Sect Zhenhuan - Guardian You Fei - Bandits / Legend of Fei Mo Du - Silent Reading Tai Sui Guomen - Through the Strait Gate Wu Wuran, Wu Gonghai - No Pollution, No Public Harm Tong Qian Kan Shi - Copper Coins Hei Yueguang Na Wen BE Ju Ben - Black Moonlight Holds the BE Script Huo Shou Zui - Living to Suffer Zhang Xiang Shou - Til Death Do Us Part Luan Shi Wei Wang - To Rule in a Turbulent World Dinghai Fusheng Lu - Epic of Divinity Light Tianbao Fuyao Lu - Legend of Exorcism Xiao Mogu - Little Mushroom Xiang Mi Chenchen Jin Ru Shuang - Heavy Sweetness, Ash Like Frost / Ashes of Love Lang Ya Bang - Nirvana in Fire Huang Jin Tai - Golden Stage / Golden Terrance Jiang Ye - Eternal Night / Nightfall / Ever Night Wuchang Jie - Impermanence Calamity Nan Chan Qing Yu Nian - Celebrating the Remaining Years / Joy of Life Fu Yao Huanghuo - Empress Fuyao / Legend of Fuyao Huang Quan - Rise of Phoenixes  Jing Wei Qing Shang - Clear and Muddy Loss of Love Nujiangjun He Zhang Gongzhu - Female General and Eldest Princess Bin bian bushi haitang hong - Winter Begonia Duzhu You Bing - The Governor's Illness/There’s Something Wrong With the Governor
Want the same thing with c-dramas? Good news I have one for that too!

Review: 六爻 Liu Yao - The Revitalization of Fu Yao Sect
Tumblr media
Finally touching Priest’s work again after a long time~
Note(s):
(Very) long post ahead
Contains spoiler
This is my personal review and does not represent the entire audience
Summary:
Born into a life of poverty, at ten years old Cheng Qian was sold by his parents to a shady cultivator for the price of a silver ingot. Following his new Master, he became the disciple of a sect—questionable and unheard of—the Fu Yao sect.
Here, his path on cultivation began alongside his laid-back Master, a narcissistic and overly pampered eldest shixiong, a troublemaking second shixiong, and a former beggar, good-for-nothing shidi.
Life was peaceful and ordinary for the teenagers, despite having difficulties to get along due to their contrasting personalities and background. However, following a rare trip down the mountain with their Master, their undisturbed days came to an abrupt end and their life was turned upside down.
Forced to grow up in the face of unprecedented and seemingly unending hardships, the young disciples of Fu Yao sect found themselves entangled in conflicts dating back to the days of their predecessors centuries ago.
Being lost and found, separated and reunited, they must thread on the arduous path to reestablish their tattered family and sect.
STORY: 7/10
A story packed full of adventure, familial bond, growth and struggles to protect what one holds dear.
Throughout the story, we are presented with chronicles of how their predecessors—the ones that still lived and the ones who had passed—attempted to achieve greatness, some even straight out defy the will of Heavens, and a journey of the young disciples of Fu Yao sect from being a bunch of naive kids to gaining immeasurable strength after being thrown into a sudden tribulation.
Some failed, some were successful. Some was able to find peace at the end of the road, while some others strayed into a twisted path and causing ruin to themselves.
One could say it is both a typical "shounen" and "Xianxia" story, but the plot is so condensed and detailed from start to finish with no holes and fillers, laying out the intense journey of the once innocent youths as they grew into a much more reliable version of themselves.
A few parts of the story, especially in the later half, might be lost or confusing to those unfamiliar with Xianxia genre in general, but overall I feel that the story is written and closed nicely.
The earlier part started out rather slowly, but it served as a good and detailed introduction of the characters, making their character development in the later part of the story more "visible" and 'tangible".
It has a great plot twist towards the end. Albeit rather typical, the execution was very well-done and it certainly made for a good closing after all the conflicts spread from start to finish.
Regarding the true villain itself, perhaps I'm the one who missed a few plot points while reading. I feel that his motive for doing all the bad things he did has a rather awkward position. If he became the way he was because of the wish made by Fu Yao sect's former leader, then it meant his motive was "created" by fate and was "forced" onto him. But if I'm not mistaken, that wish of Fu Yao sect's former leader was in the end not granted at all, so not only the villain became the way he was on his own accord, Fu Yao sect's former leader also ended up jeopardizing his entire sect, all over an unachievable wish.
And finally, although the story overall was great and not lacking in intensity, I feel that I personally am no longer capable of vibing with this type of story. Some people may rate "Liu Yao" with a 9/10, but I could only give it 7/10. It's neither the story or the author's fault; the fault seems to lie entirely with me. If I were about ten years younger, I might have been mindblown-ed reading this. Unfortunately, I seem to be too old to get excited over a story of youthful growth and adventure. :'))
CHARACTER: 8/10
Clear, detailed, and accurate portrayal of character growth from naive teenagers to adults tempered by hardships. It was truly refreshing to see them rise from children who could do nothing but swallow humiliations, to great figures that others didn't dare mess with, all through their own efforts.
As youths who knew nothing of the world, they were suddenly separated from the only adult figure in their life and was forced to mature on their own. They went from being disconnected and not getting along to inseparable, then a tribulation caused some of them to be lost, until they were reunited again much, much later.
It's like a classic RPG-kind of story and characters. Each of them have a unique personality, strength, and weaknesses, and together they complemented each other very well like a perfect house with all the fitting parts in the right place. Although they aren't immediately likeable for me at the start, they have good dynamics and this was further enriched as the story progressed.
I also quite like the awkward, yet adorable development between Cheng Qian and Yan Zhengming. The way their feelings grew until it was reciprocated was true to their characters with not a single moment of being out of place.
TECHNICAL ASPECT: 8/10
Great pacing, not too fast and not too slow. It's just perfectly right to serve this type of story from start to end, the ups and downs are presented very well.
Sometimes there could be too many descriptions or explanations in-between scenes and dialogues that disturbed the flow a little, but it isn't too much of a flaw.
Also, good sense of humor as usually found in Priest's narratives.
OVERALL SCORE: 7.6/10
A great story of familial bond, growth, love, struggles, all packed in an intense adventure. I already said this before, but it really is like looking back on the stories of some of the most classic RPGs out there, with all the epic battle spread throughout the plot.
Again, I feel that I am already a bit too old to be able to enjoy this youthful growth and adventure. Thus, if you see people giving a higher score for "Liu Yao" than this, don't be surprised, this story actually deserved it).
To sum it up, for me, "Liu Yao" is a very well-written story that I will read only once (twice, at most), because finishing it was really that exhausting (yet fulfilling).

I know Priest doesn't write explicit 🔞 scene in her novels but I was thinking about Yan Zhengming and his rare cultivation and how his sword aura can shape his features... 👀 his primordial spirit is basically a sword.
He's a pillow princess but he could fuck like a madman if he's in the mood

A series of live readings for a handful of boy’s love novels I have been meaning to read or continue for months...might as well motivate myself with some halfway decent graphics and (attempted) book blurbs!
If you’re interested in LGBT+ Asian-inspired fantasy, I highly recommend delving into the world of Chinese web novels. Many dedicated fans pick these up for translation on the bird app and they are literally everything I always look for in Asian-inspired fantasy but never find, probably due to the publishing industry’s idea of what counts as “marketable”.
They all are, of course, #OwnVoices and written by authors who are pretty well-versed or do their research on the history, philosophy, and literature their characters consume. As a result, characters never feel like they don’t at least belong in their world - it’s reflected in their speech, mannerisms, values, etc. The natural integration of a common canon of Chinese poetry, philosophy, and values is particularly valuable and difficult to write if you haven’t been raised learning all of that history in school and absorbing it from the culture you live in.
Genre Notes: • Wuxia = martial arts fantasy, no supernatural elements • Xianxia = “cultivation” novels, a mix of fantasy and martial arts wherein characters usually aim to cultivate spiritual energy to reach immortality • Xuanhan = fantasy, may have cultivation, but also encompasses more supernatural elements including the heavens/gods
All of these have m/m romance, some more heavily than others. Warnings are not complete, will be updated as I progress through the stories. None of these are too bad though, except for a certain scene in Invitation to Wine.
Tumblr media
Faraway Wanderers / Tianyake / 天涯客
A tired ex-spy wants to live out his remaining days in leisure but ends up involved in a chaotic series of events along with the other lead character, a playboy martial artist, and some ducklings (children) tagging along. Ultimately, a story that questions the possibility for redemption with a heavy amount of gritty realism sprinkled with hope and second chances.
Author: priest Genre: Wuxia, Action/Adventure Warnings: Mild gore
Tumblr media
Nan Chan / 南禅
The story of a fish that cultivated to gain a human form and an immortal with amnesia, who committed a serious crime and was cast from the heavens for it. Together, they go on a quest that will take them through the “eight sufferings” (birth, death, old age, sickness, partings with loved ones, encounters with enemies, unfulfilled wishes, and the inability to let go) and uncover a mystery in the heavens.
Author: Tang Jiuqing Genre: Supernatural, Xuanhuan
Tumblr media
To Rule in a Turbulent World / Luan Shi Wei Wang / 乱世为王
The spoiled son of a wealthy tea merchant acquires a loyal slave who supports him when he is down on his luck and cast out by his father, having to renovate the old estate his mother left to him. Later, he goes to take the imperial examinations and war breaks out when the “barbarian” tribes from the north attack. Ultimately, a story of growing up in a turbulent era.
Author: Fei Tian Ye Xiang Genre: Historical, Wuxia, Action/Adventure, Slice of Life Warnings: War violence, explicit sex, underage sex
Tumblr media
Liu Yao: The Revitalization of Fu Yao Sect / 六爻
A boy is taken in by the eccentric master of a rundown cultivation sect comprised of kids. Later, tragedy strikes after leaving their mountain home and they must find their way back – uncovering the secrets of their sect and proving themselves against a world that mocks them.
Author: priest Genre: Xianxia, Adventure, Drama
Tumblr media
Invitation to Wine / Qiang Jin Jiu / 将进酒
The main character is a young man whose family was accused of treason and he barely escaped with his life, the second male lead is the man who once kicked him while he was down. A story about the “epic feud” between these two people who never get along whenever they meet.
Author: Tang Jiuqing Genre: Historical, Romance Warnings: Torture, animal abuse

CATCHING UP TAG GAME
rules: answer the questions and tag nine people you want to get to know better/catch up with!
thank you for tagging me @vishcount 🥰
Three Ships:
Pingxie - now that I’m caught up on pretty much every adaptation, I’m amazed that every season has its own unique pinxie theme, from love at first sight in the pilot to widowed spouse gone mad with grief in tomb of the sea. Like I’m not quite at the point where I’ll write fic for it, but it’s getting there.
Songxiao - I’m still obsessed with the whole - Helian Yi/Jing BeiYuan style - karmic allocation when it comes to Xiao XingChen and Song ZiChen, especially since they were nothing but a side story in mdzs. I’m determined to write a freaking novel featuring their entanglement across seven reincarnations, all set post mdzs.
Fengciu - it’s been like a month since I’ve finished Peerless and I’m still obsessed with them. I don’t understand how any two people can be so brilliant and so stupid at the same time.
Last Song:
I just recently finished watching Vincenzo so I’ve been obsessed with Sung Hoon Choi’s version of Ombra Mai Fu (and have probably listened to Lacrimosa waaay more times than it’s healthy for anyone lol)
Last Movie:
ugh, I don’t really watch movies? I think the last movie I watched was The YinYang Master with Chen Kun
Currently Watching:
The Lost Tomb 2 - I never actually finished watching it the first time around, but had started watching Tomb of the Sea anyway so now I’m watching both sort of simultaneously?
The Long Ballad - it’s not a bad drama, although I’m noticing that people who are WAY more invested in it are people who just REALLY like Wu Lei? And he just... doesn’t do anything for me. The drama is def not bad tho
Thousand Autumns donghua - now that the first season is all out, I’m rewatching from the beginning with mandarin subtitles. It’s taking a LOT longer that way, but at least I’m not subjected to english subtitle atrocities like “fetal weakness”
L.O.R.D. Critical World - literally my third time trying. There’s something about the first few episodes where my ADHD brain just refuses to stay focused, but everyone says it gets better in later episodes so I’m determined to power through it
Currently Reading:
The Wife Is First - still being translated like one chapter a week, but it’s so worth the wait
Liu Yao: The Revitalization of Fuyao Sect - chichi is moving right along with this translation so I’m paused on like chapter 90? waiting for her to finish (I think there’s only like 9 more chapters left out of 109)
Nan Chan - I’m moving right along with this one, but I honestly still don’t know if I like it or not. So many people recommended it, and I keep waiting to get really invested, but it’s just not happening yet
I’m also s l o w l y working my way through the pingxie tag on AO3 which like, I know 1.5k fics can seem like a lot to people but I’m an old timer used to filtering through a decade worth of fics featuring 45k works for a side-pairing so like, I’m taking my time bc I’m afraid I’ll run out quickly and then will actually have to WRITE stuff myself 😭
I’m gonna tag @xantissa @scifikimmi @merinnan @orion-key @ashenlights @humanlighthouse @jockvillagersonly @chirpybirdy and @foxofninetales
