English translations of Faraway Wanderers / 天涯客 by Priest

I would love to be able to read 天涯客 by Priest but my level of Chinese is pretty limited on the reading side.  While I speak well enough, it will be challenging for me to reach a level to read and appreciate the story well in its original form.  Luckily we have wonderful fans out there who have translated the story.  I managed to find fellow fans from the WOH Reddit channel who directed me to the right sources. 

There are quite a few translations already out there so I have listed all the ones that I have managed to find, the first two by Xuxunette which goes all the way to Chapter 68 so far (she is still translating) but if you are in a rush to finish, you will also find them at Chichilations who was commissioned to translate Chapters 68 to the end.  Reason that I could make out behind it is there was the first 30 chapters translated by Sparkling Waters whereby the following chapter 31 - 67 were kindly completed by a translator who goes by Wen BuXing (the files are owned by WBX but I do not know if this person did the translation).

For TYK week over on twitter, day 1: Love languages! Featuring wenzhou's banter, which I enjoy way too much. This was one of my favourite wenzhou scenes from TYK/Faraway Wanderers ~ (from Ch 67: The Parting of Ways)

Wen Zhou Flirty Poetry Moments - Episode 6 “If you’re not there, where do I fly?”

In Episode 6, Wen Kexing asks Zhou Zishu about the condition of his wounds, of which Zhou Zishu essentially tells him to mind his own business.  Just as Zhou Zishu leaves, Wen Kexing replies with the line “千山暮雪，我孤翼只影向谁去” (Qiān shān mùxuě, wǒ gū yì zhī yǐng xiàng shéi qù) (0:16) 

This line comes from the poem “Catching Fish, What is Love and Hate in the world” by Yuan Haowen (Jin Dynasty).  In a nutshell, the poem personifies love between a couple in the form of swan goose.  The poet wrote this story when he was 16 years old.  He heard a story from a hunter who killed a pair of flying geese.  The hunter said, when one was killed, the other fell head first from the sky and killed itself.  The young poet then was struck by the concept of love and death so he bought the two geese, buried them, and wrote this poem.  

A brief description of the poem: A couple has lost their partner. The goose travels many miles alone, over the mountains and the seas, through the morning breeze and the winter snow.  The scenery is beautiful, but is there any meaning to bear witness to this alone?

Till this day, this poem is used as a descriptor of loyalty and love. (Wen Kexing’s such a romantic dickhead lmao).

On a modern side note, although the first part of his line “千山暮雪” does loosely translate to “over the mountains, through dusk and snow”, it’s used in a romantic sense in the modern context.  For example, it’s the title of a 2011 romantic tv series and the male lead was likened to the Asian version of Christian Grey. . So I’d imagine Chinese fans must be dying when they heard that line.

You’ve got to have it all! Faraway Wanderers 天涯客 the novel, to audio book and Word of Honor 山河令

After reading the Faraway Wanderers book by Priest, you can see how it was adapted to the screen with certain adjustments to the storyline to cater to the strict conditions from the China Censorship Board.  Whatever it takes, to get this story out and Word of Honor is already the most daring so far.  What I missed out on is truly understanding the poems and why they were so meaningful and flirtatious in how Wen Kexing used them into his witty banter or serious exchanges with Zhou ZiShu.  AvenueX has put together some videos which have given us much more insight into poems from WOH.
