Ohh a neverending question!! I find a lot of inspiration in german dark romanticism and symbolism, especially when it comes to colors and atmosphere. Notable mentions are Caspar David Friedrich and Ernst Ferdinand Oehme. CDF:

I love Oskar Zwintscher for the same reasons plus his composition!

Somewhat in the same vein is my fav artist above all else, Nicola Samori. His master studies are one thing but i love his manipulation of material and the way it changes the perception of the piece itself. I look to him for texture inspo and the general mood a lot!!

I also love Georges de Feure for his balance of rendering and color blocking and general composition!!

i've drawn for as long as i could hold a crayon in my hands, so i cant really remember why i started 😅 i started doing digital after i got a kindle touch (!!!) for my birthday in 2012, but i wouldnt actually get a graphics tablet until 2017 :]

🧠 What is a drawing tool you can't live without?

🐡 What is something you worried about a lot when you first started, and why don't you worry about it any more?

🧠 nowadays, that's my brush pen, the kind with ink in the handle that directly feeds the brush. The range you can get in brush strokes is great, and the texture lends itself well to my creepier art.

Some good examples of it include my ATSV OC and my OTGW fanart

🐡 I used to be really hung up on developing a Proper Art Style, but now I'm aware that it's a thing that just happens to your art without you realizing it, like an accent. You just draw things that are fun to you enough times and soon people start saying you have an art style.

I use clip studio for the most part! I think everyone's heard the "great software crazy learning curve" thing before but I feel like it's better to describe it as there being so much you can do on it that it'll take you a long time to figure everything out organically. I learn new things about it every month or so and I'm still only on 1.0.

(that and it autosaves everything. I'm very forgetful)

Over the past couple years I've tried to make a habit of taking new things head-on instead of avoiding them, like backgrounds and animals and all that, but I think the one thing I absolutely can't stand to do is really clean linework LMAO

💫 Who/what is your favourite thing to draw?

I'd say my ocs but I think I like drawing faces/expressions in general? It's my go to doodle when I'm out of ideas and I've made a tradition out of compiling my favorites every year.

i will go with my most recent one! it's the longest one-shot i've written and i think it is a wicked bit o fun.

Already she can hear his final breaths taken against her flesh. "Didn't need to go to all this trouble to fuck me, lass." He plucks her chin in his gloved fingers. His voice is serpent-low and supple. "Could have just asked."

In January of 2024 the Zhentil Keep discord server was founded with the intention of connecting Rugan fans from across Tumblr and Ao3.

I'm going to talk about illustrators who inspire me now, as I was just chatting to Luvwich about who got me going when I was a teen.

Vettyr/Vetyr

I am enchanted by the motion and use of colour in these artworks

Jesper Ejsing

An iconic MtG illustrator. I often look at him for ideas for composition!

Aurore Folny

The detail, versatility of subject and the personality of her characters are so inspiring.

Felipe Pagliuso

The motion and quality of character design is stunning.

These are a few of my favourites!

🍄 What is something you should have focused on more when you first started, and now pay more attention to?

A lot of low- and mid- experience artists, when giving feedback to beginner artists, will focus strongly on anatomy. After seeing a lot of this, I skipped quickly to trying to study and focus on anatomical accuracy when I should have spent more time on gesture.

To compare this to linguistics, this is like practising only grammar and avoiding attempting to use language to comminicate. A good foundation of gesture drawing also makes it easier to tackle anatomy later, so I really beefed it!

I think you can see this in my work even now, where there's rarely a sense of motion (and I tend to choose subjects that mean I don't need to try). I really ought to sketch more but I feel the outcome is so weak compared to what I am capable of...
