Phoenixflare x Hozier's "In The Woods Somewhere" "Lost in the Woods" Secret Santa Prompt for @february13rose "In the poem, the protagonist finds himself in the woods, and is terrified by beasts until his love interest in Heaven sends a mentor to pull him out of the woods and set him back on the virtuous path he had lost." (x)
To me, this gifset is a very loose 'retelling' of Dante (Dion) moving through the "circles of hell," though primarily the version of the stories presented in Hozier songs (both In The Woods Somewhere, which these lyrics come from, and most of the phenomenal album Unreal Unearth: Unending, particularly Hymn to Virgil) which that draw very heavily on the imagery and themes of The Inferno, albeit in that more romantic way only Andrew Hozier Byrne can be. In my mind, we are following a Dion reflecting on the madness inflicted on him by Ultima, both the slow degradation of his confidence in his father and his ability—and how, after what he did in Twinside, he considers himself lost and unworthy of saving. At the start, he is waking to a version of himself he cannot face, one burdened by regret & a lack of desire to live–but who is slowly led back to "the surface" and forgiveness by "the voice from heaven" (Joshua), who is also in a way his Virgil in that he is the authoritative guide leading him through things he doesn't understand.
In my original vision, the ending of this set is a lot sadder—more in alignment with the tone of the game and Hymn to Virgil (where Dante refuses to leave hell because he won't leave Virgil, and...they are trapped in hell together lol). In this, he escapes that hell with Joshua (out of respect for Luna's desire for a happy ending), both because he #DeservesIt and also because of the Phoenix's proverbial and literal ability to "revive" him, whether through love or his powers. Either way, the redemption and forgiveness he desires is achieved through his alliance with Joshua–which is actually kinda like the story told in canon, at least to me!
Also, side note: the grid was done in reference to Dion’s talk of his gilded cage in the quest Clive does for him in the Hideaway. It just struck me as poignant to give to him here.

As I warned in my previous gifsets, I have a meta incoming. Lol. It's about how Galadriel regards Sauron and the symbolism of her dagger.
If we look at Galadriel, and as I have referred in previous analyses, she frequently and almost exclusively refers to Halbrand AND Sauron in possessive terms: “my” and “mine.” Which is interesting because that phrasing is used alot by those enraptured with the Rings. But here Galadriel uses it when talking about their maker. From the first scene when she says to Finrod that his vow "became mine” and in the following episodes, it comes up repeatedly. This sense of ownership. My task. My vow. Even when Elrond assures her that he will honor her vow if she departs for Aman, she refuses to give it up. She won't give him up. He is hers.
Later in season 2, Galadriel proclaims to Gil Galad that she "alone" can face him. She even displays that possessiveness in 2x4 when she splits off on her own, unheeded to face Adar in Eregion where she knows Sauron lies in wait. Instead of remaining united with her kin, she gallops toward the darkest path, knowing it is the straightest road back to him. With no one to get in her way.

Why does she insist on working "alone?" Is it because she is an outsider-- Or is it because she thinks only she can defeat him? There is a cool, clinical calculation there -- she desires efficiency and expediency. She believes that her way, alone, and with the power of the ring in hand is the surest way to attain her goal. Who else does that sound like? And when Elrond, one of the few Elves who dare not bend to her plans and will not be swayed by her assurances asks her pointedly "Is there no point at which the cost of victory becomes too great?" Galadriel responds unabashedly, "I have yet to reach that point." Is this not what Sauron saw in her? This ruthlessness of one person's vision? She claims it is for the greater, noble cause for which she would shoulder the burden. But as Elrond, Gil-Galad and Adar had suggested, Galadriel is not the only one to bear it. Why does she insist? And I think it's even more complicated than just her honor and conscience driving her. I think it’s because deep down she believes she has ownership of him. She wants to possess him. Alone. She has a greed for him.
I think that sentiment is powerfully symbolized by her dagger. It is upon that dagger she swore an oath and upon which she builds her identity and purpose. The dagger begins to personify her devotion. But to what? Or whom? Oaths taken by elves are not done lightly. As the physical dagger undergoes an evolution, we see her vow evolve as well. And it's no accident that the image of her beloved brother, his words and his memory start to bleed into this shared connection she has with Sauron. And the shadow Finrod casts over their bond grows and intensifies, culminating with Sauron literally becoming him in her illusion.

Over the centuries Galadriel honored this pact and for a long time it probably was about justice. But then it morphed into something else. And the audience is shown that. When first she refused to give it up on her way to exile in Aman and presumably would have been reunited with her family and loved ones. It's obvious that it's no longer just about Finrod.

She even says as much to Halbrand when he asks her if her cause is motivated by vengeance. She denies it saying, "One cannot satisfy thirst by drinking seawater." It's bigger than revenge. It is her reason for living. She is betrothed to it. Fighting him. Defeating him. Destroying him. Him.

And Sauron reciprocates this vow when he returns the dagger. Twice. Look at this framing. It looks ceremonial, almost matrimonial. Galadriel standing in a long white dress and Sauron placing in her hand the dagger, the symbol of her vow, before a gathered assembly for all to witness.

The second time he offers her a knife is in his forge in Numenor. Right after she says, "Not you, yourself." He slams the knife down and actually presents himself. But she doesn't look down, not seeing that he is pointing the blade at himself, as if to contradict her, hinting, "Yes. Me." She stares only at him. A metaphor for how trained her eye is on hunting Sauron, that she overlooks the truths before her. How her trust in Halbrand was so great that she missed that this gesture was an admission and an offer. An admission she would not let herself see and an offer she won't accept. She can’t accept. She doesn't take up that blade because she is already bound to another one -- her dagger, the proxy for her vow and her bond with Sauron.
And "Halbrand", knowing this, offers her an alternative to the Dark Lord with this other blade — a path away from retribution and despair. He’s offering “Halbrand,” his loyalty, his sword, his peace and “paradise” in Numenor. But she will not forsake her vow, the fate she believes she is bound to, for any other. In her hunger, she tries to have both. Halbrand AND Sauron.

The last time he offers Galadriel the dagger is after his proposal on the raft. And while she rejects what he has to offer again, she does reclaim her dagger. Still, she will not renounce him. "She cannot stop." Then that same blade undergoes a metamorphosis.
It becomes a perfect amalgamation of their cosmic bond. This ring of healing — healing, Sauron’s aspired purpose. The ring of water — water where first they were coaxed to join. And the ring itself. Of the rings of power, it’s the only one formed this way. It isn’t forged or molded. It's a woven thread of finer filaments wound into a circle. Intertwined like their souls and fates in this moment. And these moments seem to echo the image of the Valar engineering the destinies of these two beings, now bound in an inextricable circle.

The ring becomes her vow reborn. It goes into the fire a relic of her past and emerges as something else. It calls to her not just because of Sauron's shadow, but because more than anything it carries a part of her. Mithril, borne of evil and good, is now intertwined with the precious substance of Galadriel's devotion. Was this the original sentiment behind his design? Knowing that for better or worse, good or evil, she has remained most steadfast as his enemy or his friend? Certainly this kind of devotion calls to mind another type of vow. When even though he did not forge her ring, it was always meant to be hers. And in his vision, there were two.

LET'S TALK ABOUT "HE'LL MAKE IT BACK"
Special thank you to @mmobiuses, @starrose17, and @stevenrogered whose gifs make-up the lion's share of this post. Thank you to all the other amazing gif artists as well, without you, my metas won't be possible.
This might come as a surprise to a lot of people, but I actually wasn't big on Lokius until Season 2. I thought Loki and Mobius made a cute ship in Season 1, but that was the extent of it. In truth, I lost interest in the Loki series by the S1 finale and had 0 interest in watching S2. I didn't give the series another try until I saw positive reviews on Tumblr. I therefore started watching S2 when S2E4 dropped.
LOKI SEASON 1
Enjoying the potential love story between two characters is a deeply personal and subjective experience. So take what I say as my personal experience observing Loki and Mobius's relationship.
I fully believed Mobius loved Loki in S1 in the platonic sense. Tom Hiddleston has given a few interviews on Loki's and Mobius's relationship and seems to believe in this sentiment as well [see 5:30-7:30 and 10:57-11:00]).
That is to say, in S1, I didn't feel, "Oh, my god ... he loves him." It was more, "Yes, he loves him", there is no question, his actions prove it.
There is wiggle-room for unrequited love in the S1E4 interrogation scene, but the jealousy Mobius exhibited could have just as easily been a combination of anger on behalf of his murdered colleagues and platonic jealousy.
However, I felt the first hint of unrequited love from Mobius occurred during his goodbye scene with Loki in S1E5. Specifically, this look:

I had no expectations for that look to pay off in any way. Season 2 surprised me.
LOKI SEASON 2
S2E1 is amazing episode because, through subtext, it reframes how Mobius's S1 emotions may be interpreted with stronger evidence for romantic motivation. In this episode, there appears to be a subtle, gradual build-up to the moment that Mobius's love for Loki may be viewed as fully romantic. Let's break down the episode and look at the progression:
First, learning that Loki is at the TVA: *sigh* I can't find the "Loki's here?" gif.
Second, and perhaps the most infamous, the reunion and whole-body support Mobius provides Loki in the TVA War Room (physical comfort):

Third, Mobius bringing Loki somewhere safe and quiet, assuring him that "it's okay" (emotional comfort):

Fourth, Mobius insisting that Loki's condition must be fixed, not once but twice, in two different scenes. A third (writer's magic 3s!) instance occurs in the Heart of the TVA, just before the gangway scene (prioritizing the other):

Fifth, Mobius's admission that Loki's timeslipping looks horrible, and he can't look at it anymore. He repeatedly stresses to Loki how serious this is (emotional and physical empathy):

Sixth, Mobius taking Loki to exact right person who can help. This is particularly significant, because Mobius is the only person in MCU canon who has verbally expressed concern for Loki's physical well-being and took immediate action to stop the pain (act of service):

Seventh, the third time Mobius prioritizes Loki's wellbeing. He scolds Loki and reminds him they have only one shot at getting his timeslipping corrected before the temporal radiation becomes too high (prioritizing the other):

Eighth, Mobius interrupting Loki, insisting that he will make it back. The subtext here is that no other outcome is acceptable or thinkable for Mobius (emotional comfort):

Finally, Ninth, the clincher: "He'll make it back." (self-comfort)
This scene is everything to me. Moments 1 through 8 build-up to this singular moment. Let's do a micro-analysis on it.

After Loki timeslips, the camera stays on Mobius. It tracks him as he kneels down to pick-up the time sick, the last thing Loki touched. The camera then pans up as Mobius rises.

@stevenrogered, THANK YOU for this gifset. It's literally the only one I could find that captures the camera tracking Mobius after Loki disappears, and this is my all-time favorite Mobius scene.
Mobius stands for a moment, motionless, and the camera holds on his facial expression. He's staring at where Loki WAS for extended period of time (keep this in mind for later). He's holding his breath. He's worried, scared, and hopeful, not for himself and the danger he faces on the gangway, but for Loki.
Finally, he exhales as he says to himself, "He'll make it back".

This entire sequence--particularly the moment when Mobius picks-up the time stick and holds it in silence--made me feel, "Oh ... Oh ... he loves him."
The camera stays with Mobius, capturing his reaction to this high-stakes situation for a significant amount of time (@loki-us, maybe you can get this timed starting from the moment Loki disappears and Mobius starts to kneel to pick-up the time stick?). Cinematographers don't do this type of hold unless they want to illicit a strong emotion from the audience regarding the character we are focusing on in the moment.
My insides swooped, which rarely ever happens when I view film or television.
And this camera hold, this pregnant pause, is mirrored by Loki's stare in S2E5:

i rewatched Dune Part Two recently and one of the most striking shots for me was the one of the Fremen attacking the Sardaukar on wormback, while holding the Atreides flag.
Like, we just saw the Sardaukar forming up with their numerous flag bearers, even trying to maintain their flags raised after the nuclear detonation (in a shot that mirrored the famous "Raising the Flag in Iwo Jima" statue to me btw, nice nod to imperialism).
And then the Fremen arrive, but they're not bearing their colors, their flags, not fighting in their own names, instead it's the Atreides colors. The colors of their new, imperially appointed rulers. New pawns in the warfare between Great Houses, soldiers instead of freedom fighters. Urgh. Wish i could make gifsets.
Yeah yeah yeah it's horrifying!! You are watching a national liberation movement get successfully co-opted by a superpower and it's awful!
They did such a good job making it feel creepy and foreboding when the Atreides symbols and motifs start re-appearing in the last hour or so of the movie. The second Gurney shows up he immediately re-introduces the Atreides way of looking at the world, and it's disturbing how easily Paul falls back into thinking like that, seeing the planet and its people as tools to be used in an inter-imperial power play. (It's right after Gurney tells him about the family nukes that Paul has the signet ring out for the first time since the beginning of the second act and we're like OH NO.) This is before he drinks the Water of Life; he is already starting to think like a colonial duke again some time before he declares himself one.
After the opening montage where we see the piles of bodies being burnt, we don't see the stylized Atreides hawk symbol for most of the movie. The next time it appears is on a vault of nuclear weapons, which are never treated as anything but a curse. It's so important that Stilgar and Chani are with Paul and Gurney when they open the vault so we can see their horror at these weapons and the gleeful, casual way Gurney talks about them. Chani is also seeing an aspect of Paul that she hasn't really witnessed before--Paul, the Future of House Atreides--and she does not like it.
And then of course the whole ending battle is making the point over and over again with repeated imagery that Atreides and Harkonnens are exactly the fucking same. All the imagery from the initial Harkonnen attack on Arrakeen in Part One--which at least shows the Atreides as brave in the face of overwhelming odds--gets inverted into something that's supposed to make us shudder. That scene of Gurney hacking his way through the crowd of soldiers with someone carrying the Atreides flag behind him? Nightmarish.
All of this stuff is super important to what the movie is trying to say because it is very very easy for us to buy into the Atreides' propaganda about themselves being the good guys. If we're paying attention to what Chani tells us in the literal first 3 minutes of the first movie, we already know we should be viewing them with a bit of critical distance. And while I think there is plenty in the first movie to make us side-eye their noble image (Leto saying we will bring peace to Arrakis?? fucking yikes dude), it's easy to forget that because Leto generally seems like a good dude to the people close to him, and he dies tragically so we never get to see much of what kind of colonizer he would have become. And I think it's easy to start thinking well if only Leto the more reasonable parent had lived then things wouldn't have turned out this way.
But fucking desert power?? That was Leto's idea. This is Leto's dream being realized. The plan was always to use the Fremen as pawns in the power struggle between the Great Houses. Maybe not quite in the way that Paul does cause he definitely goes off with it, but the end result is just as much a product of Atreides imperialism as it is of Bene Gesserit religious colonialism. The Atreides aren't inherently any more noble or benevolent than the Harkonnens in their intentions, they just have better PR. But the end result is exactly the same: a pile of dead bodies being set on fire.

going off of a tag i made on a gifset, I think a hilarious storyline would be chimney deciding that tommy might just be a witch. He comes to this realization because eddie starts talking about how he was closed off and didn't want to talk about christopher, but tommy came over and looked at him and eddie just started spilling everything out. he tells chimney how good it felt to just be honest about everything and he had initially told tommy he didn't want to talk, and tommy didn't try to make him, he literally just looked at him and eddie couldn't shut up.
buck says he feels like he goes into a trance when tommy is talking to him. his voice is always so soft and measured. he swears he forgets what day it is sometimes, or that time even exists at all. it's worse when tommy looks right into his eyes. it's like he can read buck's soul, but buck doesn't mind it at all. it feels safe.
hen thinks they're being dramatic, but then they have buck and tommy over for dinner and tommy starts chatting with karen, and karen starts to release all of these thoughts she's kept internalized for years about both minor and major moments in her and hen's life. she hugs tommy and, after they leave, she tells hen she's never felt so light before.
after hearing all of this, chimney is fully convinced tommy is a witch of some kind, and he goes straight to tommy to find out what the actual hell is going on. tommy finds it amusing. he sits down with chimney and asks him why he believes in curses and witchcraft and all things supernatural so deeply? could there be something deeper there? cut to a few minutes later, chimney is bawling and hugging tommy so tightly and tommy is patting his back, telling him to let it out.
at work, chimney is still talking about the spell tommy definitely put on him. bobby kind of rolls his eyes and says alright, that's enough, but at the end of the episode bobby's knocking on tommy's door saying he doesn't care if the guy is a witch or a saint or just good with words, he'd like a turn at an emotional release.

Lizzington shippers, fam, grandmas and grandpas, can I have a moment of your attention, please?
It's not a secret that, while some people in Lizzington community are still active, whether they write or make gifs or keep our dash full of Lizzington even in this trying times ( @melbob26-blog, thank you for this! ), Lizzington community as a whole went into hibernation over the last couple of years.
And I get it, interests change, especially when one show ends and there's another ongoing, moving on from the show that ended is totally natural, especially when it didn't give your favorite characters the happy ending they deserved.
I get it.
Hell, for a pretty lengthy while there I focused on other ships and shows, too, especially after TBL ended ended last year.
But you know what I realized earlier today, when I reread some of the old fics, browsed through gifsets and text posts, watched some fanvids?
It's the show that ended, for some in 2021, for others in 2023. And the only thing that means is that it cannot disappoint us anymore.
( it's not like we were suddenly deprived of quality content, because let's face it, the fans have been the main source of the quality lizzington content for years now, while the show gave us mere crumbs, on a good day )
But Red and Liz?
They are still out there, fighting criminals, catching Blacklisters, travelling the world, shamelessly flirting, toppling shadow organizations, raising Agnes and/or any other children they have, and generally being the sexy badass power couple they are!
Nothing changed in that regard.
So why would we mourn them, when they are out there, healthy and happy and in the middle of yet another adventure? I'm sure right this moment Red is drawing Liz into another one of his heists and she's only too happy to join him, even though she pretends that she's not, for the sake of the game.
There's literally no reason for us to stop writing, giffing, editing, sharing theories and headcanons and memes and just talking about our favorite couple.
And by writing all of this, I want to propose something daring to you:
Let's revive the Lizzington community!
Let's rewatch earlier seasons and gif the hell out of them because it's been a while and because precious moments between these two are not going to become less precious even if it's giffed 10 or 100 more times, not to mention that ever gifmaker's style is different, so there are virtually no two identical gifsets as there are no two identical snow flakes.
Let's make fanvideos, picspams, picture edits, fanart, moodboards! The amount of songs, quotes, moments etc that can inspire you is virtually endless!
Let's write fics, let's explore AUs, let's give each other prompts and challenge each other to try something new or practice some aspect of writing, like writing kisses or AUs or hugs or making up Blacklisters etc!
Let's share headcanons and theories and ideas and what our versions of Red and Liz are like, because everyone has their own unique versions of Red and Liz living in their head, and it's just beautiful, if you ask me!
Let's reblog stuff, filling each other's dashes with Lizzington!
Let's scream about Lizzington because no one does it like them!
Let's revive the Lizzington Community, we all miss it!
