Will and y/n never directly responded to comments, unless one made a joke to the other about them, making the other blush slightly. Or if James decided to make a joke, which would make both of them incredibly flustered as they immediately deflected it.

Are just a few of the usual responses to either of them would give if asked about the comments, or if a joke happened to be made.

But privately, it wasn't so much of a joke. Will would make it seem like he couldn't stand dating her, but really that's all he wanted. And y/n seemed to think Will genuinely didn't want her, but she most definitely wanted him.

The way she'd stare at him when he spoke, or did anything really, would make Will's heart skip a beat.

The way Will would offer to help her with things or get things higher up for her gave her butterflies, especially if he reached around her.

Basically the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife, and the fans definitely noticed more and more in the videos of the two together.

And like the fans they are, would comment on every single little interaction and blow up the videos by just shipping them.

Today was no different, y/n being at Will's as they talk over ideas for videos and hang out, and boy are the comments from the fans relentless.

"Y'know, Will, I think the fans want us to get together. Wouldn't it be funny if we did a joke video of us going on a date or something? Just to mess with them?"

Will immediately blushed but hid by turning away slightly and letting out a laugh as he nodded, he managed to get himself under control and not blush.. but his cheeks were still definitely pink at the idea of taking her on a date, even as a joke.

"Ah yeah, that'd be well fun, eh? Get to take a pretty girl like you out and mess with those morons."

Now it's y/ns turn to blush as she stares at him and smiles a bit, letting out a little laugh. She nods a bit and stares at him, crossing her arms over her chest.

"But just as a joke.. right? Wouldn't want to over indulge them, right?"

Will seemed to think for a second at that as he stared at her, not really knowing what to say. He could either reject the girl he's been wanting for ages or make a fool of himself if she didn't want him.

She stared at him as she waited for a response, hoping he'd say for real, but also hoping that'd he'd play it off as a joke just so it doesn't get awkward.. but it's already awkward as they silently stare at eachother.

"I uhm-.. I mean if you want it to be a real date, I'd take you on one.. but surely you wouldn't, don't wanna over indulge the fans, eh?"

Will managed to say, feeling like his heart had broken his ribcage then dropped into his stomach as he stared at her. He managed a smile and a small chuckle as he ignored how sweaty his palms felt.

Y/n on the other hand, was freaking out. Her stomach twisting and doing flips as she tried to fight the growing warmth on her cheeks as she stared at him.

"I wouldn't mind a real date.. If you were serious."

She said as she stared at him, ignoring the lump in her throat as she bites the inside of her cheek, staring at him hopefully as she hopes he was serious, and not just messing with her.

He nearly died. He was absolutely giddy with excitement as she confirmed she'd go on a real date with him. Shit. She wants to go on a date with him. His stomach does flips as he stares at her and smiles widely.

"Obviously I'd take you on a real date, y/n. But we definitely shouldn't over indulge the fans, they might all explode, the morons.."

He said as he got closer to her, seeming like he wanted to touch her somehow, but didn't want to overstep.

She stared at him as she smiled, her cheeks flushing a light red as she looked at him and stood right in front of him and glanced at his lips.

"I'll go on the date if I get a kiss. Gotta know that you're serious, y'know?"

She said as she shrugged and stared up at him expectantly, grinning slightly.

He smiled but froze, staring at her for a second. He sneakily wiped his hands on his pants, de-sweaty-ing his hands before he gently cupped her cheeks.

He hesitantly leaned in, pressing a soft and gentle kiss to her lips she could pull away from anytime. But he hoped she wouldn't and that she was serious.

And boy was she serious. She gently put her hands on his jaw, kissing him back as she smiled.

Eventually they both pulled away, staring at eachother and smiling like idiots, which they were idiots for not getting together sooner.

"So, where we goin for that date Lovely?"

"Hm, I dunno.. Surprise me, but not somewhere super fancy, somewhere simple."

He smiled, nodding as he heard her request for a simple date. He stared at her for a moment before kissing her again, to which she happily kissed him back, hugging him tightly.

‘what do you mean, Coryo? Why would you think we’re together?’ Sejanus’s whole face had paled and his sandwich was getting crushed in his hand. What had Coryo seen that he hadn’t? Surely if anyone was going to notice something about you, it would be him, not Coriolanus.

‘they kissed you goodbye, Sejanus.’ Coryo scoffed, eyes rolling at his friends frantic behaviour. ‘And they definitely don’t do that for anyone else.’ Sejanus wanted to ask if Coryo was sure, but he couldn’t get the words out without becoming a stuttering mess. He’d never thought about it that way befriend.

- spends months waiting for you to reach for his hand before he takes initiative and does it for himself the first time, and you totally freak but are super good at hiding it. Sejanus just takes this as he was right you were only being friendly.

“but I don’t get why.” you stressed, not really understanding coryo’s ‘plan’ that was supposedly going to push you and Sejanus together. it made enough sense but you weren’t sure it would actually help anything, not when you weren’t going to get anywhere when Sejanus only liked you as a friend. “if you want me to kiss you goodbye as well Coryo, you could’ve just asked.”

“it’s not about that, what I’m trying to say-“ Coriolanus didn’t have time to finish his works as he noticed Sejanus coming around the corner and into the corridor the two of you were stood in. “Kiss me, kiss me now, quick.”

more then anything, you wanted to be with Sejanus, and if Coriolanus truly thought this would make that happen, then you were willing to give it a try. Leaning up onto the tips of your toes, you pressed a long kiss to his cheek, making sure Sejanus had seen it before you pulled away. The second your lips left his cheek, he ducked his head and forced a blush to his face, hoping it would make Sejanus jealous enough that he would act on his feelings. However, Sejanus never said a thing, instead giving a pointed glare to Coriolanus and grabbing your hand tightly, pulling you away from the scene of the crime. As you turned to look back at Coryo in confusion, he simply gave you two thumbs up and a wicked grin.

- after Sejanus sees you press a kiss to Coriolanus’s cheek when you’d never done that for anyone else but him, some kind of switch inside of him had flipped

- low-key made him realise he’d never felt like this before and that he definitely saw you as more then just his friend (but had no clue how to go about telling you that)

- so he continued holding your hands and accepting your cheek kisses but now he felt more confident returning them.

“okay, I’ll see you later.” Sejanus had pressed a fleeting kiss to your cheek then turned and left the lunch table without another word, mainly in an effort to hide his flushed face but also incase your reaction was not what he’d predicted.

Coriolanus let out a loud laugh as he looked at the scene before him, your hand ghosting over where he’d just planted a kiss on you and a star struck look in your eyes. “Sejanus just kissed you.”

“Sejanus just kissed me.” You repeated in a far off, airy voice, a bright smile curling on your lips. “Sejanus just kissed me!”

- things only continued to escalate from there

- and since you were now certain he returned your feelings, you knew the only way you’d be able to make him understand was to be completely straight forward with it (because anything otherwise would just go over his head)

- it’s a gloomy, winter, Monday morning when it happens

you march through the doors of the academy, standing tall and proud with the confidence that what you’re about to do is going to give you the one thing you’d only ever dreamed about. it helps that your pretty sure things are going to work out in your favour too.

you walk straight past everyone from you classes, ignoring calls of you name from classmates in search of homework answers and a particularly belligerent Felix Ravenstill, who you’re pretty sure is trying to ask you to be his date for the winter formal. no one mattered right now except Sejanus. But then again, when had they ever? So, you aimed straight for him, not noticing the way Coriolanus seemed to try and ask you something as you approached the two, only taking in Sejanus who turned around to face you with a bright smile and a loving, “Good morning!”

“Good morning.” You replied closing all distance between you as you cradled his face between your hands and brought his lips to yours in a kiss. Sejanus takes a long moment before he begins to reciprocate the kiss, but when he does he drops his note books to the floor in favour of gripping onto your waist and kissing you back harder.

When you finally pull away from him, Sejanus looks totally frazzled - hair mused and lips red, face flushed and a smile so wide that his cheeks hold deeper dimples than usual. “What was that for?” Half the academy is currently staring at the two of you but this time Sejanus doesn’t have the mind to care. “I don’t get-“

“I like you, so, so much.” You tongue darted out across your lips for a fraction of a second but it was enough for Sejanus to find his gaze upon your lips once more. He could lean forward and kiss you once again but he wanted to listen to what you had to say - he figured he’d quite like it. “I want to be yours, if you’ll have me.”

Sejanus doesn’t know the word for it right then and there but it’s love that he feels for you, and that he will feel for you until his very dying breath. “Without a single doubt I am yours.” He answers, leaning in to try and kiss you again, though you pulled away as he moved in trying to meet his eyes. “I already have been for a long time.”

- if Coriolanus had been annoyed by you and Sejanus dancing around eachother, he found himself even more annoyed now that you two were actually together

- somehow more handholding and kisses then before??? and you won’t leave each other alone???

- previously, if you had a class Sejanus didn’t, you’d leave him with a kiss goodbye in the canteen, but now that you were together, Sejanus would spring out of his seat the second he noticed you were grabbing your things, barely saying goodbye to Coryo as he took your hand and offered to walk you to your class

- Coryo was definitely jealous he was third wheeling so much harder then before (though jealous of who, he couldn’t decide) but was glad he didn’t have to deal with the two of you being in denial at least

How it happens/Meeting Vash

You’re basically desperate when your plans for moving in with your ex best friend fall through, leaving you basically homeless right before the semester is about to start

Looking online, in the newspaper even, you’re searching for any place that doesn’t look scummy, creepy, or charges you up the ass

Knowing full well that living without roommates in this economy is impossible, you’re hoping to find some nice people-

And boy do you luck out

Posted on some stupid roommate finder website is an add for a three bedroom apartment that’s in a sort of sketchy part of town, but offers protection for anyone willing to brave it. The guy that posted it seems nice, the ad is kinda funny, and the rent is cheap

You decide to try it out

When you first meet Vash, it’s in a little coffee shop near the uni you’re attending. It’s a safe spot to meet with a stranger, and he was cool with whatever you suggested. Green flag.

He’s pretty nice, funny, and insanely cute. He tells you that the other roommate, a man he calls “Nicholas” is at work, but from the way Vash talks about him you assume he’s a chill dude too

You can’t help but feel a bit intimidated by how attractive Vash is. He’s blonde, with a cute little mole, and his eyes are like…woah

Plus he’s got a cute little piercing !!!

No guy this good looking should be this nice

You decide pretty quickly this feels like a good match, and bam the deed is done

You move in next week, get your stuff situated and suddenly you have two new roommates

Meeting Wolfwood

It’s almost disappointing how little you see of the other roommate in the first week. Vash explains that he’s been taking on extra shifts at work but you still kinda feel like maybe the man is avoiding you?

All you know of the man is that he smokes, drinks a little, and has weird taste in movies

You see random objects strewn across the house that belong to him and you start trying to figure out his personality in your head

You decide that he’s probably some skinny stoner, and you’re pretty confident in that hypothesis until you actually see him

You bump into him in the morning right before you head off to start your first day of class

You literally bump into him-

As he’s leaving the bathroom, you’re in the hallways and a collision occurs. To make matters worse he’s shirtless

And he’s hot

He’s wearing sweatpants, his toned torso out in the open, and his hair is a bit of a mess. You can tell it’s sort of a short wolf-cut though- and it’s definitely working on him 

He kinda smirks down at you and says it’s nice to finally “run” into you

And fuck- how are you supposed to survive having TWO hot roomates

General Chaos

You find out pretty quickly that these two are not the most normal people

And you freaking love it

Once Wolfwood’s insane work schedule chills out, you finally get chance to see the duo in action

They kind act like an old married couple. It’s a bit scary at first, and you fear you might be third wheeling but you soon mix into their dynamic quite nicely

Once wolfwood starts calling you some funky nickname you know you’ve wormed your way into their hearts

Your schedules all clash a  bit, but you all find time to see each other throughout the day. Wolfwood has a morning class like you, and so you end up eating breakfast together most days. You start taking turns making food for each other

No matter what you both at least drink an entire pot of coffee together, and complain about life

Vash and you meet up in the afternoon, since your afternoon classes are close to each other. He’s the one who texts you the first time to ask if you want to meet up- and your heart does a little flip

It has become a habit. Whenever you two aren’t busy with other things, you’ll sit outside on a grassy area and talk for a second

All three of you hang out at night when Wolfwood isn’t working insane night shifts

Saturdays are movie nights. You HAVE to attend movie nights

It gets crazy. Especially when Wolfwood graciously shares his stuff.

The first time they see you cry- you’re pretty sure they might explode

You’re stressed from school, whatever job you might have, and probably a few family problems too. Vash walks in to your room to ask you what you want for dinner, sees the tears and whips out his phone to tell Wolfwood

He then immediately rolls you up in a blanket and makes you cuddle him on the couch to destress.

He’s insanely patient with you, rubbing your back and letting you vent

Wolfwood kicks open the door with your favorite comfort food moments later, and the three of you sit and watch a stupid movie

Wolfwood keeps his arm around you, and lets you rest your head on his chest

Vash’s hand is in yours

They’re pretty respectful of your privacy at first- but they’re both like the clingiest friends ever

Vash doesn’t mean to- and will apologize if he oversteps boundaries 

Wolfwood on the other hand just doesn’t care. He’ll waltz into your room and go “Hey- stop screaming- I need you to make sure I got this math correct.”

Crazy competitive game nights, that sometimes end in you pulling Wolfwood off of Vash as Vash screams for his life to be spared (he like staking stars from Wolfwood in mario party) (It ends in bloodshed every time) (He should really stop)

Grocery shopping is just Wolfwood acting like a dad while you and Vash are off shoveling sweets into the cart (He secretly puts his favorite treats in the cart too though)

You and Vash stage an intervention for Wolfwood when he gets a little bit too into buying random jewelry covered in crosses (“we know you have religious trauma- and yes you look good in them- but come on-”). He walks into the apartment, sees the sign, and then walks out

Vash invites his brother over once and you’re pretty sure you’re about to be cut. (“No Vash- Knives is nice…he’s just scary.” “He just has a resting “I want to murder” you face!”)

Feelings bloom?

They really warm up to you. One day it becomes clear that you’re just…part of them now. Like they can’t imagine you ever leaving their side

It’s the same for you. You walk out one day, and grab your mug of coffee from Wolfwood and…you just kinda spot and think that you really like these guys. Things feel right

I think overtime things just slowly get intimate- 

like you start holding Vash’s hand just casually throughout the day

And sometimes Wolfwood will come rest his head on your shoulder from behind, and you’ll reach up and run your hand through his hair

Casual soft touches just become a thing you know?

Vash lets his hand rise under your shirt a bit when you’re sitting with him on the couch

And eventually…maybe they become less casual?

Wolfwood puts his hand on your waist as he passes by behind you

The sexual tension is like palpable 

I don’t really know who finally kisses who- or how things go from wholesome to spicy- but it gets there eventually

And soon you three are more than just roommates, more than friends, and even if you don’t know what it is- it’s kinda perfect

You renew the lease for the next year, and you’re pretty damn happy you were homeless for that little bit now

Heyyyy!!....Do you think it is true that Nightfall is a better match for Twilight? … Some people think that she has had more interactions than with Yor.…you know… in the last chapter…

I really don't know if it's the right thing to define Nightfall or Yor as the "best" or not, after all, a relationship is more complex and should be something that is naturally born….. Now, speaking of the last few chapters. I don't feel like the last arc is proof that Nightfall and Twilight's relationship is getting on track romantically, and whether or not they have more interactions with each other doesn't really make them a couple.

I don't think it's accurate to say that Nightfall's character has had any kind of evolution, in fact, I feel that from the tennis arc until now, we have been introduced to Nightfall's character and her understanding of love

Unlike elite spies like Wheeler or Twilight, who profess that spies should be beings devoid of feelings, as feeling genuine attachment to others is their main weakness. However, Nightfall has always claimed to admire everything Twilight has taught her, seems to go against the spy ideal, and refuses to give up her desire to one day love someone.

In fact, Nightfall manages to crush (literally) Wheeler's arguments by demonstrating that love can be the biggest trigger that drives you to survive, and allows you to break through those limitations that fear of relating to other people gives you.

Yes! Nightfall's feelings for Twilight are totally genuine, and you can tell that she's really willing to accept it. Even if Twilight is now a plastic knife that only cuts butter or a sharp weapon, Nightfall insists on loving him and being willing to sacrifice herself for him, even if it leads to almost destroying herself (literally).

Still, just because Nightfall feels that way, it doesn't imply that his feelings are actually fully reciprocated. It may seem to some that Nightfall and Loid have had more interactions lately, due to the fact that they both work together. However, nothing between them really seems to change.

Nightfall has tried several times to approach Twilight awkwardly, and her attempts to tell her that he has become weak because of the Forger, do not succeed in making him open up to her, in fact, Twilight insists on creating a wall of denial and wants to justify that his actions have always been for the mission, although at this point that wall is already visible and fragile.

Nightfall and Twilight's interactions are based on her trying to make him see that he is opening his heart to his fake family…perhaps as a way to make Twilight freak out and shut down (and thus end up choosing her as his mission wife).

That Nightfall is the one who continually witnesses how Twilight is bonding with her family is pure cruel irony because it hurts her the most to know that her mentor is not being truthful.

Something very opposite to what happened with Yor at the end of the chapter. Yor herself knows that Loid strives not to be vulnerable, and that he himself is closed to depend on another. In other words, Yor is telling him that she can see his exhaustion and weakness, but Loid, far from rejecting this idea, prefers to accept and ask her to help him a little… even if it is still hard for him to accept it.

So, I don't think I can really say that Twilight and Nightfall's relationship is really leading them to reciprocate feelings….

In fact, that Nightfall keeps insisting that he has a chance to break up Loid and Yor's relationship at the slightest sign of weakness makes one believe that he really has a long way to go before he can change

Sometimes the Adaptation is the Book, Actually...

So, as I'm sure more than a few of you did, I enjoyed the heck out of Jill Bearup's fantasy heroin YouTube shorts series. And as I'm sure many of us have experienced, YouTuber books can be...distinctly hit-or-miss in terms of quality. So when Bearup announced that she was adapting the shorts series into an actual book, I was willing to give it a shot when it came out. So in Bearup's own tier list terms, I'd give this book a pretty good. Strong concept, a lot to like...but the TYPESETTING, my god. Let's talk Just Stab Me Now.

This is your spoiler warning for a book that has been EXTREMELY hyped on YouTube, and one who's story has already been told on YouTube. Here there be Spoilers.

So normally I like to start with the things I like about a book, but since I liked so much about this book and the one thing that I didn't like could have stopped me cold, we're going to start with the one thing that I think was actually bad. The typesetting.

To be clear: Bearup was extremely clear that using different fonts and margins to delineate between Caroline's world, the fantasy world, and Caroline's mind where she interacts with the fantasy characters was a considered, intentional choice. That's valid, and there is nothing inherently wrong with making that choice. It's also well done in the book, like it's consistent and well put together.

That said: Oh my god you guys, I hated it. It took me the first fifty-odd pages to get used to it, and even then, it AGGRESSIVELY snapped my editor brain's bra strap. I seriously considered putting the book down because of the typesetting, which would have been a crying shame because I really enjoyed the book overall. This might not bother some readers, but it was nearly a dealbreaker for me, so I wanted to mention it as a "your mileage may vary" kind of thing.

Other than that though, I think this book did a pretty solid job of adapting the fantasy heroine shorts into a full-blown novel.

Caroline Lindley is very much helicopter parenting her fictional characters, and the fact that they are by turns bemused and cranky about this is very fun throughout the novel. I also like that we get a lot more of Caroline in the novel than we did in the shorts series. Her story was just as compelling as Rosamund and Leo's, and I quite enjoyed having the extraordinarily modern cybersecurity subplot to balance the fantasy setting as well. I wasn't expecting that to work as well as it did, but thematically it resonated quite well, and I like the acknowledgement that while we don't use swords and political marriages so much these days, it's not like we've STOPPED having enemies and needing to protect ourselves, our homes, and our families. The relationship between modernity and "no particular historical era" in terms of thematic connections was really well done.

The general added depth to all the characters was also excellent, since we had time and space for characterization that the shorts series had to skim over for time. We really felt Rosamund's grief in the book, Leo had way more personality (and I loved that) and some of the plot stuff was smoothed and fleshed out in some really interesting ways. The caladrius was actually an inspired touch, and it tied together a bunch of slightly odd things in the series in a really elegant way. It also gave Baron Mabry and George an interesting parallel too, since they were both screwing over people for financial gain. The methods might be different, but the heart of the crimes and the harm they do are fairly universal.

As a writer, I also ADORED the conceit of Caroline being absolutely out of control in her process. She was trying SO HARD to write a standard enemies-to-lovers romantasy and literally nothing could get her plot or characters there. Every writer has been there, every writer has had little breakdowns over the story just not freaking doing what you tell it to, and there was something deeply vindicating about it. I loved the personification of the writing process.

This book also had a little bit of that Princess Bride feel where it is both a send-up of romance tropes and a deeply respectful nod to them. I don't know that pastiche is the right word here, but neither does parody seem to be, and I think we need a word for this writing mood, where you're both deconstructing and reiterating a series of tropes. I don't have a word for it, but this is a thing that pops up periodically (periodic because it's genuinely hard to do well; lean too far to one side or the other and it flops catastrophically) and we should name it.

Overall, for a book from a YouTuber--especially one who rather famously discovered halfway through the process that she does not enjoy writing fiction--I was pleasantly surprised by this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Bearup has told us not to expect a sequel, so I won't...but if one materialized in the future, I'd read it!

speaking of gnomes to them his mindset about how magic and alchemy work is a bit too elfy for their taste so that's a point taken. he's the type who would combine both gnome and elven's methods into one, though, so he's a bit of a controversial, problematic bad boy celeb among the conservatives in the academia

orcs didnt care about him at first because they associate researchers with people who hire adventurers for protection. after proving that he can protect himself just fine on his own to the point of doing solo hunts, the panties are dropping here and there

Disclaimer: This post is mainly about really aggressive/hostile fans. Disliking stuff is totally valid and curating one’s online experience is important, but... I’m very strongly convinced that the majority of people who vehemently hate Goro Akechi or Shuake to a really hostile degree either haven’t played Royal, haven’t moved on from base game, haven’t maxed his confidant, or really lack reading comprehension. ‘cause disliking a ship or a character? Super valid! Everyone has their preferences and comfort zones. I would never shame someone who genuinely just... doesn’t vibe with it, finds it uncomfortable, and wishes to avoid content or posts w/ the character or pairing. I also completely understand the frustration of wanting Goro content that isn’t ship-focused, since sometimes fandoms can make a pairing consume a character in fanworks (though I’d argue you can have the pair and still give him agency outside of it, at the end of the day, there will always be people who just don’t want it). But when I see factually incorrect arguments like, “Joker and Akechi hate each other,” I just go... “Did we play the same game?” The game where Joker’s greatest wish was to see Akechi again. The game where Morgana outright states that Akechi doesn’t really hate Joker and Akechi himself laments that they didn’t meet years earlier, and if they had, how they could’ve been friends. A game where it’s made very clear that despite the stupidity of going with the revenge plan with Shido and the lives taken along the way, there was still a disgusting power imbalance with Shido, a grown man in politics, effectively molding a broken teenager into being a hitman... And even the betrayal toward the PT- I feel like Akechi’s offer to have Joker join him was genuine as a sort of last ditch effort to get him out of that situation. The SIU director notes how the plan is way too callous even for Akechi, and after it happens, Akechi tries to downplay the dangers of the PT to Shido, suggesting a part of him, even if only a small one, does feel some remorse.

There’s this messy complexity to Akechi and his relationship with Joker and the PT... and people try to strip it of all of its complexities to make it a bland, black and white matter, and it sucks. It feels like those kinds of people want to turn Akechi into a hatesink when Shido is literally right there. And Kamoshida, and Okumura, and many other awful adults in P5. It’s weird how little flak they get by comparison? And I’m biased- Akechi was a character I developed an attachment to as I reached third sem and his character just came together for me. But it’s so freaking annoying to try and search up art of the character or ship on sites like twitter only to find the worst takes possible. Folks gotta separate their personal feelings from the feelings of the characters. The actual canon interactions and relationships are infinitely more compelling than “Joker/the Phantom Thieves all hate Akechi.” I much prefer what the game presents us- with characters like Haru and Futaba not forgiving him, but still sympathizing with his situation and (perhaps reluctantly) being willing to work with him when it’s absolutely necessary. The friction is just so compelling, because even if he’s a tragic person, his actions still robbed them of loved ones. ...but also, President Okumura requested many shutdowns himself and was an awful person, which also adds to the messy complexity for poor Haru.

Anyway, this is just a late night ramble because I went to find fanart and found annoying tweets. Argh.

Well i think you rember that scene from Resident Evil 7 on the stranded boat were Eveline asks Mia:" can we be a family again like before?" And I onestly wonder what would have happened if Mia just answered with: " Yes Evie, we can be a family, under one condition. You have to promise to never hurt anyone ever again."

What do you think Eveline would have done? I mean it would be totally out of character for her to reject that. She was willing to do anything to get what she wanted. So giving her what she wanted and in turn only demanding that she is no longer killing anyone does not seem like that big of a deal. Sure she was raised to do that but children are impressionable and easier to change than fully grown adults who have already made up their mind. The fact that she disobeyed her creators and the fact that she was doubting herself after losing to Rose clearly proves that she has the will to change. She just doesn´t know in which direction.

So I think it would have worked. Sure raising her, teaching her to control her emotions (and inturn her powers) and giving her the therapi she needs would be the more difficult part, but I think it would be worth it. And if I had to decide between adopting or killing a child I would defenately pick the first one.

So what do you think would It have worked, or how do think Eveline would have responded to that?

First, I love this idea. I think the idea of Mia taking a moment to consider what exactly she's dealing with would be nice, and for her to try and deescalate things by not antagonizing Eveline would... probably save a lot of harm at this point.

So let's assume Mia really takes a look at Eveline, at this child who has just been doing the only thing she knows how to do while trying to find people to be her family, and is kind of like "Goddamn it..." because she actually starts to feel some sympathy for Evie again. She's seeing that little girl that was pawned off to her before the boat ride. She’s a little weird, a little creepy even, but she’s only a kid. So, against her better judgment “Yes, Eveline. We can be a family again-”

And I think that response would just catch Eveline off guard. She’s up out of the chair staring at Mia with disbelief, even some excitement. Then a pause, and hesitation. “You’re not lying again. Right?”

“No, no more lies.” Mia kneels to match Eveline’s height, holding out a hand. “We’ll be a real family this time. I promise. But I need you to promise me something, too, okay?” Eveline gives a small nod. “You can’t hurt anybody else like this. No m  ore molded, no more… controlling people. No more death. Do you think you can do that?”

Still a little cautious, Eveline takes Mia’s hand, and together they go to the lower decks to find Ethan where Eveline frees him from the blob of mold. After a momentary freak out seeing this kid that’s been tormenting him for the past 6 hours, Mia explains the situation to him. He’s hesitant, even skeptical that Mia might not be fully herself, and she understands why. After a lot of reassurance that 1) Mia is not being controlled and made this choice willingly, and 2) Eveline isn’t going to be a harm to them, their only real obstacles are making Eveline a stabilizer so she doesn’t die of rapid aging (chosing to believe this would revert her physical form back to a child), and Blue Umbrella finally doing their job of investigating the place.

The stabilizer is easy enough within the Mine Labs. Lucas has so much stuff on Eveline, he’s bound to have something, and Mia probably has some know-how on how to make it (also cue Mia muttering insults towards The Connections for screwing her over when they were literally in contact with Lucas. Maybe she shouldn’t be surprised, but she still feels a little betrayed.)

Blue Umbrella is a little harder to deal with. They already know Eveline is a Bioweapon. They won’t just let the Winters’ leave with her like nothing. Unless they sneak away with her. Which they probably could since Eveline wouldn’t be keeping them bound to the property anymore.

(There’s also Zoe who I don’t think Mia would feel comfortable just leaving behind and would probably want to go back for)

All of that aside, I think they could make it work out. With Ethan and Mia (and maybe Zoe. I live for cool aunt Zoe) trying to teach Eveline better ways to deal with aggression, a SHITLOAD of therapy (for everyone), and Eveline finally having a (somewhat) normal setting/finally being allowed to just be a child. I think it would largely work out.

Mia and Evie’s relationship would also be kind of intriguing. Because they have to learn to fully trust each other, and while they do they end up with this bond that Eveline initially wanted. The whole time she never allowed Mia to fully slip into the delusions because she wanted legitimate maternal affection/care from her, and now she has that.

Anyway TLDR: Obstacles aside, I think Eveline would accept the offer and they would all live a decent life. Given the circumstances. (They’d probably still be in witness protection because The Connections are going to come for Mia AND Eveline’s asses)

I love my BFF so much, but we had a convo a few weeks ago that got me very emo and I still haven't quite recovered.

She was talking about how she's thinking more and more about shifting into private practice, and how between the flexible schedule that could give her, plus her husband now exclusively working as a dog sitter/walker, also flexible, and her parents being willing to help a lot with childcare, they probably won't have to put their baby in daycare at all.

I think this is AWESOME. And she's been private-practice-curious for a couple years now, and probably would've already made the jump if not for being pregnant, or trying to get pregnant, for so long and needing solid insurance. I have known even before she did that it would be a situation where, once you get a taste of that money + scheduling freedom, you'll never go back. So none of this is surprising to me -- all good!!!

Her parents, however, for as many awesome qualities as they have (and they really are awesome, I love them so much and wish they could be my parents, or in particular I wish her dad could be my dad), are unhealthily tied to the ideal of productivity. Her dad is a farmer and her mom was an ADA. They have both worked HARD, forever. They have definitely assigned morality to one's job status. It goes a long way to explaining why BFF finished college a year early and has almost always worked at least two jobs, even if she didn't strictly need to.

So, that's all background to a couple weeks ago, BFF had told her mom that her husband was not going back to his part time office job at all, and would only do dog gigs. Her mom freaked out way too much about this. They moved past it, but BFF was very much still smarting over it. She started recounting to me what her mom said, and what she thought about what her mom said, and then some general thoughts about the merits of daycare vs. no daycare - and I realize that what was really happening is, she was replaying the fight with her mom, and talking to her mom and not actually to me. BUT it was jumbled up enough that I did think she was talking more TO me (plus, like...she literally was? Talking to me?)

And I was nodding along and you-go-girling, until she said some things like "I wanted to have a baby for so long, and now I finally do, so why would I go through all this time and heartache to get her here, only to stick her in daycare all day?" ...again, now that I know she didn't mean that at ME, I can kinda swallow it, but it was hard not to think "oh yeah, so I had a baby quickly, so I guess I didn't want the baby as much? And so that's why I didn't care about 'sticking them in daycare all day'??"

The other offending comment was "I know lots of people do have to send their kids to daycare!" (which to me implies, the only reason you'd make such a horrible choice is if you HAD to).

In the moment I just cried and couldn't say much coherent other than "you can say these things without having to bash daycare."

I just drove home crying and replaying it...it wasn't til I got home that I grasped just how much she wasn't even talking to me - like, at one point she said "and you were lucky enough to be able to afford daycare for three kids" and in the moment I just thought "huh? I only have two kids" but then later I put that together - her MOM has three kids.

She texted to apologize and confirmed that she just got in a rant and couldn't stop. I've seen her at least once since then and it was all good. But I think she has this underlying thought still that she can't talk about her choices now without worrying about offending me and making me think she's condemning my choices, when it's not actually about me at all! But it's hard to explain that I am actually pretty receptive to statements like "I'd rather configure my schedule so my husband and I can take turns with the baby" or even "I don't want to send her to daycare" as long as they don't veer so far into judgment about daycare and the people who "have to" send their kids there.

IDK I don't think I'll bring it up tho, unless it comes up naturally. There's just too much risk I'll stumble over my words and start crying and make it worse.

Also this horrible conversation was part of what made me really start looking at the idea of me eventually stopping working. She was saying something about their budget changing, but that "there is no number"- i.e. no amount of additional income that would make it "worth" sending the baby to daycare - and that made me realize that there's no number for me either - no amount of extra income that makes the logistical realities of two kids and two full times jobs more manageable.

So...all's well that ends well hopefully.

I've always been a fan of Hunger Games AUs that focus on people post games, where they have to try and find themselves and live with what they did on top of navigating the snakes nest of the Capitol.

I'll put this under a read more as to not clog up the dash.

General AU Stuff:

Most Hunger Games canon stays the same, however Hermitcraft canon gets mixed and mingled in there. Same way Mumbo was the youngest ever Hermit member to join at 17, in this he was the youngest victor to win at 12/13.

Their ages are the same as they are irl, since years have passed since they competed. No Children Here

Personally i am really fond of the idea of Evil Xisuma taking on the role of president snow - his legal name is Xisuma, but since Xisuma Void won everyone just calls him Evil Xisuma and victor Xisuma got to keep his name LMAO

Why Yes they overthrow the Capitol again. Frankly, with these people i don't think any other ending is possible.

With more character specific stuff though, i only have some that i have real concrete ideas for. I don't watch everyone so if people who do watch the ones i miss/have not much on have ideas i'd love to hear them!!

From district 10, he was the one who lowkey revolutionized the games by winning using expert camouflage - a technique that was more finesse focused and less strength, something that what was not expected.

That gave a hell of a lot of hope to other tributes though in following games, and made the career districts hate him because it was 'cowardly'.

During his games he would always sleep at night, and due to the aforementioned skill was able to usually get a solid 8 hours. People poked fun at this during the post game interviews, and it became a running joke associated with him to the public.

Reality is though, that Bdubs knew that people fuck up the most when they're sleep deprived. District 10 has 19 thousand people and one million livestock. He Has Seen The Consequences Of Not Good Enough Sleep. Being better rested then everyone else on top of knowing how to go without food, keep hidden and let the others tear each other apart was how he won.

Cubfan:

From district 6 and dreams of using the vast amount of technology at their hands to actually venture out into space instead of like. working on fucking trains

Capitol often has him working in district 3 because he's "wasted" in district 6, which has Cub internally seethe.

Docm77:

From district 3 and frankly, he should not have survived his games. Literally won because his opponent bled to death faster than him.

His eye and arm were destroyed during that final fight, and his stylist thought it would be "fun" to make his prosthetics reminiscent of his district, without actually asking for his input on the matter.

As one of the older victors he had to deal with the Capitol back when there was less victors, and the Capitol was more than willing to subjugate the ones they had to their whims.

Yeah sorry your son got experimented on. yeah sorry they decided his games weren't memorable enough for a gimmick and decided his post games looks worked better. yeah sorry about that.

Realistically he should be from district 3 or 5, but since he's Canadian i want to put him in district 7 so bad.

ICONIC Hunger games. Literally in the top 10 for reviewability according to people from the Capitol :) meanwhile that hunger games has Ethos running around both in a completely delirious freaked out state and also like. completely detached? A hell mess of dissociation and too much being in the moment

He deployed a ton of traps that would kill without him actually having to be there, and contraptions that would get him resources. Dude was constantly on the move, and was like a busy bee. The way he kept spectators on their feet at home, and generated massive amount of hype for what he did next, was the only reason the game makers let him do this shit.

His eye was injured but not wholly ripped out like Doc, so when his got repaired his stylist decided dying his iris red would be a fun reminder of his 'deadly gaze' :)

False:

From district 2, False volunteered for the games as she was the most eligible girl in her years. Career district go brrr

Still the Queen of Hearts and Bodyparts, except she got that title when she accidentally disemboweled someone right on top of her trying to kill her. yeah she had to smile at the post games interview when they played that and try not to remember how warm the blood was, how it got into her mouth, how she could feel organs and see spine.

Unlike the others who try to distance themselves from the game, False usually tries to mentor. False knows she's capable and able - knows her district produces girls who fight exactly like her, so she's the best to tell them how to direct it.

Each one that comes home is a triumph, but for the ones that don't she remembers. Tries to learn from their deaths to provide better, but carries it with her and it's starting to make her bitter.

Fawn isn’t “Good” Fight isn’t “Bad”

So something I’m pretty tired of in conversations about the nervous system and trauma reactions is that when it comes to Fawning, all I see is how hard that is on the person doing it and when it comes to Fighting, there’s very moralistic language that implies it’s always abusive in some way. So I want to challenge that. 

In general, the order goes Flight --> Fawn and/or Fight --> Freeze. You try to get away from the threat, then if you can’t you try to placate and/or fight off the threat, then finally if that won’t work, you freeze/play dead and try to feel the least amount of pain. The order can wind up being different based on personal histories. 

I say this to point out that Fawning actually occupies a similar function as fighting - repelling the threat. 

If you do something neutral and someone reacts with being defensive and seemingly ready to fight, you’re probably understandably taken off guard and wonder what the hell you’ve done. Maybe you even feel defensive yourself. If you do something neutral and someone reacts by trying to placate you as if you’re actively threatening them, you’re probably understandably taken off guard and might even feel as if you are being bad person in some way. 

The mental toll of being exposed to that again and again can be very psychologically damaging and can be just as ripe for psychological abuse as fighting can be. In my experience, the toll ca be much worse because fawning is afforded so much social cover. “Why would you partner feel the need to fawn that hard if you hadn’t done something wrong?” - because they are a traumatized individual not managing their trauma reactions in part because it affords them social coverage to control the situation in ways other reactions do not. 

Just ask anyone who grew up the child of a parent who defaults to fawning what it’s like to grow up feeling like you’re a villain or a bomb about to explode at any minute for even the most gentle pushback or requests. These are people who often wind up defaulting to freeze because even healthy attempts manage conflict are met with villainization. They often feel as if they have literally no options in the face of circumstances they find uncomfortable or threatening because all roads - fleeing, fighting, or healthy conflict methods - lead to being the bad guy. 

And it honestly freaks me out that I keep running across people who do not feel like they need to manage their fawning because of the social coverage it receives - “it’s hardest on me after all and I deserve it” followed by waves of reassurance. Fawning is just as ripe for manipulation as anything else - and is getting more common in spaces I inhabit as moderators and leaders continue to refuse to create space for productive open conflict. It becomes covert, passive aggressive, and socially subtle. 

Fawning is damaging and needs managed just as much as Fighting does. And whether you think one is “good” is a sign of your personal preference, not material reality of the reaction itself. I would prefer people Fight with me over any other trauma reaction. I’d rather have it out where neither of us has the ability to socially manipulate the other. But that preference doesn’t make my tendency to drop to fight - born out years of not being able to flee or socially placate - any better than any other reaction. It’s just a preference. .

Obviously, not all Fawning is manipulative. But just as obviously, not all Fighting is abusive. And allowing “Fighting is abusive always” to become the social norm in the spaces you inhabit means you just wind up rewarding one potentially damaging trauma reaction over another - not reduce them all together. 

So what do you do if you’re a leader in one of these spaces and you want to turn the tide? I recommend reading up on Fawning with examples. Start to keep an eye out for it. In the spaces in which you’re leading, be willing to call it out and - this is the most important - redirect the behavior into something productive. 

“It seems like this interaction is difficult for you. Could you perhaps make a request for the kind of assistance you need? If not, why don’t you take a moment to get regulated and then rejoin the conversation. Absolutely no hard feelings it happens to all of us at some point” 

People who are fawning not out of any attempt for social control might feel uncomfortable but usually will either request some reassurance that they haven’t royally fucked up or take a moment to get into a better headspace and be quieter upon rejoining. You can always circle back with them and give them some safe social interactions to help show the conflict has passed and there’s no harm done. The behavior usually starts to become extinguished (except during times of high stress) after a couple interactions like this. 

But for people who’ve become accustomed to fawning as a way of manipulating others to regard themselves in a certain way, this kind of redirect can be taken as an active threat. They will often switch and act as if you are the one being an aggressor in an attempt to get you to stand down. It’s hard but you’ve got to hold your ground. They might begin to get defensive and actively blame the other person in the interaction. They might use moralistic and social justice/identarian language to cloak their actions in some sort of legitimacy and redirect the intervention onto the other person. They’re used to being able to use leaders and the opinions of others to harm those they feel threatened by. 

I’ve often found folks like this will actually self select out of your group when they realize they cannot use you to alienate those they find harmful or they don’t receive the kind of reassurances they’re used to getting without having to ask for them outright but have a clear policy in place for how many warnings someone gets before they’re asked to leave/kicked out and just follow it as normal. 

In summary, all trauma reactions can cause harm to people other than you. None are inherently abusive and none are free from the ability to be used toward abusive ends.  All trauma reactions need managed.

Your post about Ww/Vash is valid and honestly relatable to me. What makes me (even more) turned away from it is the hypocrisy of the shippers. Sure, yeah, you can always mute & block all that, curate stuffs as to not let fans affect your perception or feelings about something. BUT, it can only do so much, can it, when said fans won’t stop going around & forcing their presence onto other people’s spaces, calling them freaks, and sending death threats to other people. Anyway, yeah, the hypocrisy of said shippers when their ship is not less problematic than the twins ship ruined my enjoyment for it.

(I have to ask, tho. What do you think about Knives/Vash as a ship then?)

As someone who has had The Queer Experience of people who would rather I just be "normal" and not a "freak", having family who would rather I kill myself/be dead than have a queer family member, let me tell you, I don't have any patience for the whole thing of suicide baiting over things that don't affect you and aren't about you. And I think that makes a lot of this extra upsetting when coming to fandom and having people refuse to leave you alone, it hits those buttons for a lot of us and the fighting about this kind of thing makes so many people so tired and it plays on so many people's emotions that a lot of people just want to eschew even getting into it all together. I think too many people in fandom these days over-identify with the fiction they're reading/watching and anything that contradicts that feels like a personal attack, it feels like it must have this tremendous detonation on the real world when someone likes something in fiction that you don't, but it just doesn't actually work that way. A ship in fandom is not in a 1:1 relationship with reality, nothing in fiction is, but what is in a 1:1 relationship with reality is the boundaries you cross when you harass and hurt real people over their ships. And that will always be vastly more important--if you can't handle decent personal boundaries with real people over ships, that is the real problem here. It's fine to be squicked by things, almost everyone has them! And it's fine to talk about trends in fandom, because sometimes things do come from bigger social trends, like there is a lot of racism in fandom that I think it's important to talk about. But sending death threats or doxxing people still ain't the way to handle that, babes. Anyway, as anyone familiar with the series has probably picked up on, yeah, Knives/Vash is my ship of choice in the fandom, there's a very particular vibe between them that just gets me. And it's fine that people might be squicked by that, I'll tag anything to do with them in that light (because I'm also interested in them purely platonically), but it's also fine that I like what I like in my space scifi western show. (So, heads up for anyone reading this, I will always tag with either #plantcest or #plantcest for blacklist if it contains commentary about them, but isn't relevant to the tag/I don't want to put it in the tag for some reason.) Because, man, any series where the entire story is centered on the conflict between them, where no one else really ever matches the intensity either of them have for the other, where one of them is literally doing everything for the other person, where they wouldn't just be willing to burn down the world for that person, they're actively trying to burn it down for the other, that kind of teeth in a dynamic is delicious. I love love love conflict between characters that love each other so desperately, where the conflict is central to who they are, that the other person loves them for being the person they are, even as it drives them apart because they can't accept the things that person is doing, that is MY JAM.

Ask for demons fic! I really hope Mike can learn to open up more about his trauma especially since in the latest chapter he slipped into his disassociate mode when with Will and kudos for Will seeing something was wrong. Also nice parallel of the byler scene low-key mirroring the madwheeler scene when Max clued in Mike was switched into a diff mindset.

Hope Troy is able to get the help he needs or maybe even pays Richards a not so friendly visit since he finally faced/stood up to his dad. Cuz if it wasn't for Troy's dad being an unsafe adult then Troy could've had a smidgen of the support Will has in regards to his pain.

I love Will being patient with Mike even though he's jealous and for Mike to loudly express that despite his bond with Troy, Mike actively chooses Will to be with in the end and how excited he was that Will trusts to be more intimate with Mike. You really write Mike all adorably cute which shows even more the tragedy of his past/current self. The "could have been should have been" had Richards not got to him.

NYC is proving to be good for the boys and I can't wait to see Byler literally aid out all their demons but I enjoy the process of taking baby steps as opposed to rushing all in. Mike actually is taking his time and reflecting and Will isn't freaking out and navigating cuz he's been through it before. So sad to see its almost over 😭

I agree! I think Mike has made some headway, especially with finally being able to open to Will and clue him in to the actual truth. But yes! I think he still has some things he’ll need to tell Will and also, just for himself too so that he can break out of some of his bad habits, not hurt Will in the same way he hurts Troy, and also learn to not degrade himself because it’s what he was told was his worth by an abuser. At least, I think in the latest chapter, it felt like he’s willing to take the first step, which can be the hardest.

We’ll have to see where that goes once he and Will spend more time together.

Oh God, what I would pay for Troy to give Richards a not so friendly visit!!! Could you imagine? I have to say, your absolute disdain for Richards really is so lovable. We could think of all the horrible things he deserves. I am not sure if things are going the way they expect or not, but I hope they like the outcome! 🤞🏼🤞🏼

I think babysteps is right for them. Everything has been so intense between them since the beginning but i think they both realized somewhere along the way that they both have their issues and desperately want things to work out with each other so they are both choosing to be patient and take their time with each other in a lot of ways which im not sure is either of their, especially Mike’s, normal state.

I am so sad this one is coming to an end too! I think it might be one of my byler fics i am most proud of, and it feels good that some people have also been enjoying and have stuck with me until the end!
