((hi hi! it’s me, ise! i wanted to say before the fic starts that this is part of a Barbie Princess and the Pauper AU that I’ve had in my head for ages!!! Lup and Taako were seperated at birth- Lup went to the castle with the royal family, Taako went to live with his aunt, until she died and he had to work for the person she owed debt to. that’s pretty much all u need to know? yee, hope u enjoy!))

To be entirely honest, Taako doesn’t know why he’s still here. Why he’s still pretending to be Princess Lup. Maybe because he’s scared about getting found out and thrown in the dungeon. Maybe because he was having a bit of fun pretending to be royalty. Maybe because he, for some odd reason, found himself worried about Lup being missing. He had only met her in the market a few days ago, but the connection had been fast. It might have something to do with the fact that he and Lup were literally identical, despite him being a pauper and her being a princess, but-

You get the gist. Taako and Lup look similar, Lup goes missing, love-stricken castle fool (aka Barry, a royal tutor) brings Taako in to play as Lup until he can find her and bring her back to safety. Easy enough.

That’s what Taako had thought, too, until this handsome prince from another kingdom dropped by, supposedly set to marry Lup in a few days. And, on top of it all, Taako had the unfortunate luck of gaining feelings for the first time in his life. Feelings, towards this prince who thought he was a princess. Feelings that could get him thrown in jail or, even worse, dead.

“You know, Lup, you’re not at all what I expected you to be,” Prince Kravitz said. They were wandering the castle grounds together as the sun set. Taako’s stupid heart was doing stupid flutters in his chest as they held hands. Mr. Dropdead Gorgeous Royalty was exactly his type. Goddamn it.

“Oh?” Taako asked. Barry had given him this whole “how to be a proper princess” lesson upon arrival. Taako didn’t mind the dresses and such, though the shoes were impractical to run in, but all the social rules. Gross. Don’t do this, don’t do that. So far, Taako had utterly failed around Kravitz. He was honest to god trying his best, but- “Why do you say that?”

“You just aren’t… I hope this isn’t rude, but you don’t act like many princesses I’ve met in the past,” Kravitz said, squeezing his hand. “I mean that in the kindest way possible, of course. There’s just something about you that is so… unique. It draws me to you.”

Ah shit. How to act like Lup? How to be a princess? God. Fuck. Shit.

“Thank you?” Taako said, having it come out more as a question than anything. “I mean, you’re not so bad yourself, my man.”

GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER, TAAKO.

Kravitz laughed, hiding a smile behind his free hand. It was adorable. He was stunning and adorable and lord only knows how much Taako wanted this to be real.

“Thank you,” Kravitz said, sounding so fuckin’ genuine that Taako might be sick. His laughter died after a moment, though, and his face grew somber. His eyes flittered over the garden they were walking through.

“Can I be honest for a moment, Lup?” he asked.

“Uh,” Taako said, brain still trying to catch up to being called by a different name. “Shoot.”

“I was… nervous to come here,” Kravitz said. “Our kingdoms have long been united, but never through marriage. I was sent here with the intention to, ah… restore your kingdom’s wealth through your hand. And you know this, of course. That was the deal our kingdoms agreed upon. Marriage, shared riches, everyone is satisfied. I… didn’t think I’d be satisfied with this deal.”

They approached a bench. Kravitz gestured and Taako took the chance to sit down, the heels killing his feet. Kravitz stayed standing, arms folded behind his back. He looked… nervous. Incredibly so.

“There are very few things that I still wish for in life. Being a prince, many of my dreams are at my fingertips. But I wanted to be married for love, if possible.”

He turned away, towards the setting sun.

“I never expected to find that here,” Kravitz said. “I never expected to find love, period, with all the arrangements made for royals. I came here expecting a dull marriage and instead I- I found you, Lup. And I realized that, more often than not, truth lies beneath the skin, not outside it. I expected someone textbook, someone not- not like you. There’s a lot more to you than princess and there’s a lot more to me than prince.

“And I just hope,” Kravitz said, turning back to him. “I hope that you can love me for me, instead of the attitude I have to put on when we’re with others. I hope that I can love you for you- you are incredible, Lup, I-”

Kravitz stopped himself, gazing intently at Taako. Taako clutched his hands on the dress. Geez. Oh boy. It felt like Taako wasn’t supposed to be hearing this. This was meant for Lup. Granted, Kravitz and Lup had never met, but- but-

Fuck, did that mean that Kravitz liked Taako as Taako and not Taako as Lup? He kind of felt like throwing up, to be honest.

“I want you to know the real me,” Taako heard himself saying. “I really do, Krav.”

“I want to know you,” Kravitz said, kneeling in front of him. He grasped Taako’s hands in his again. “Underneath what society wants us to be is who we really are. I want to see that side of you.”

“What you see right now can be deceiving,” Taako said. His voice sounded croaky, unsteady. His heart was going a million miles an hour. He felt like ripping off the disguise that made him more Lup-like and just telling Kravitz the truth one hundred percent.

And then he thought about dying before making it out of the kingdom and his jaw clenched shut.

“Truth lies underneath the skin,” Kravitz repeated, bringing Taako’s hand to his mouth. He placed a kiss on the backside of his palm, softly. “Hope will bloom if we believe the heart lies within. And here, right now? I hope you can see my heart plane and true. I want to be with you.”

Fuck, Taako thought as the butterflies in his stomach picked up again. Is this guy a sap or what?
