Tag Game: Top 10 Albums
tagged by @corpocyborg :3 tagging @fly-amanitaa @streetkid-named-desire, @totentnz and @theviridianbunny (no pressure of course)
Rules: List your top 10 favorite albums, and (if you want) include a brief description for why each one made it onto the list. Then, tag 10 (or however many you want, really) others to do the same.
#1 - Sunset Tree: The Mountain Goats
The album that got me through the part of college where I lived in dark places- home to the well-known This Year which gets many people through the dark days of January, and the less-appreciated Broom People which never fails to catch me by the throat. Try hard to do your best- the Magpie comes at noon. Heartbreak and defiance all the way through.
#2 - Salt for Salt: Brown Bird
The next in a line of bitter, rebellious albums. Folk is at its best when it flirts with blasphemy, anger, and cynical acceptance. The middle-eastern influence on their music always draws me back to Brown Bird in general but this album is my favorite by far from the languid bleak Chairkickers to the hypnotic instrumental of Shiloh which is etched into my brain. RIP Dave Lamb.
#3 - A Southern Gothic: Adia Victoria
Found this album on a random Bandcamp Friday and have been reaping the rewards since. Adia has a voice that is both powerful and deliciously soft, and I never get tired of listening to her. Mean-Hearted Woman is my favorite for giving me the shivers when she sings so prettily of revenge but My Oh My is close behind for the haunting loss.
#4 - Rock Bottom Rhapsody: Pokey LaFarge
Pathetic masculine romantic is a weakness of mine and this album delivers. Swingy, jazzy, blues-y all the way through, with that bit of self-aware but sincere longing. End of My Rope was my introduction to the cheerful celebration of being Utterly Fucked, but Fuck Me Up has a soft place in my heart whenever I lose the ability to give a shit and also to remember fondly of that time I went drinking in Chicago.
#5 - Helplessness Blues: Fleet Foxes
The Fleet Foxes have a special place in my heart for introducing me to indie folk and influencing my tastes for the next decade. Helplessness Blues is one of my comfort albums that I like to play on repeat when I feel like shit. Battery Kinzie is my favorite but the eponymous Helplessness Blues is also one I sing frequently to myself. Also hilariously, the second funniest song I have ever heard on a pre-tourney playlist. Mad-Dog ya weirdo that is the opposite of a warm-up song.
#6 - The Art of Drowning: AFI
One of three albums on this list I learned of from my sister, and dear to me for the time in which she burned it for me. This album is inextricably linked to Metroid Prime to me, which I would play while this was playing on my translucent blue boombox. I used to quote the lyrics from these songs to my friends on Yahoo Messenger and put in my Gaia signature, just to date the period. If I need to sell AFI to you I won't try.
#7 - The Relationship of Command - At the Drive-In
The second album my sister burned for me when she went to college. One of those nostalgic albums that's stuck with me, and okay not to get pretentious or weird but the first time I realized art could be hard and weird and good because of that. Invalid Litter Dept. remains the best and most heartbreaking song on the album.
#8 - Polka's Not Dead: The Dreadnoughts
My third sister album. The Dreadnought's energy always fills me with delight, and I am normally an autistic hater of loud live music and venues but I'd love to hear this guys playing in a bar some day even though it'll probably never happen. Most of their songs are fun to sing along with (especially when tipsy) but I personally enjoy Poutine and Sleep is for the Weak.
#9 - With Teeth: NIN
Got a soft spot for NIN in general, but With Teeth is probably my favorite album with a lot of strong songs in general, but most importantly with my favorite pair of soft NIN songs at the end: Beside You in Time and Right Where it Belongs, which as with all NIN songs are perfect for silverv.
#10 - It's All Crazy! It's All False! It's All A Dream! It's Alright!: mewithoutyou
If you've made it this far, congrats, here is where I say that I actually liked some of the music my christian church band leader shared with me when I was in highschool. mewithoutyou definitely has religious tones but does not suffer from the praise jesus fever so I love them for their eclectic tone and songs about parables. The Angel of Death Came to David's Room and The King Beetle On a Coconut Estate are my personal favorites, although it feels wrong to not then round that out with The Fox, The Crow, and the Cookie.

this might not make sense but I absolutely love your billy and Stu playlist. Could you maybe write a couple headcannons on which songs they like and why? You could include the reader or not it's up to you thanks Maddy!❤️🔥
I think I get what you're asking. I hope you like it!💕
Billy's playlist
Stu's playlist
Billy
1.) 1979 by The Smashing Pumpkins
This is Billy's favorite song I don't make the rules. Smashing Pumpkins is one of his favorite bands. The song reminds him of a time he was happy. He listens to music like it'd play in a movie about his life. This would play while a montage of him and Stu flickered on the silver screen.
2.) The Killing Moon by Echo & the Bunny Men
This song always finds its way onto his mixtapes. It makes him think of how love can happen to anyone even if they pray it doesn't. He equates love with death just because you have no control over when and where it happens.
3.) A Day In The Life by The Beatles
A Beatles song amidst alternative rock is definitely a little jarring. Billy actually enjoys the Beatles. It was his mother's favorite band. He grew up listening to the Sgt Peppers album on repeat. She'd sing song after song to him trying to get him to sleep. This song reminds him of simpler times.
4.) How Soon Is Now? by The Smiths
Billy's a Smiths fan. He puts music on just to brood over his life. The man thinks he has better music taste than everyone else he knows. Stu likes to make fun of Billy's music taste. "Damn does that shit come with razor blades?"
5.) Mama I'm Coming Home by Ozzy Osbourne
Mommy issues. Likes to play music he knows that'll make him cry. He thinks if he makes himself cry in private he'll be less likely to accidentally cry around anyone.
6.) It's The End Of The World As We Know It by R.E.M
Stu knows all the words to We Didn't Start The Fire by Billy Joel. Billy thinks he's a dork because of this. Yet in the privacy of his car, he will sing every single word of this song.
7.) Every Breath You Take by The Police
Told a girl he related to this song on a first date. He's still not sure why she stopped talking to him. Billy still thinks it's a romantic song.
8.) Goodbye Horses by Q Lazzarus
Only knows the song because of Silence of the Lambs. Will start dancing to this song if he's been drinking.
9.) Flesh For Fantasy by Billy Idol
Remember how I said he thinks about where a song would fit in a movie about his life? This would play while he's kissing down your chest. His movie wouldn't have a full sex scene he's not a sellout. More like a montage of kissing and soft moans. It would be frustrating to watch for people like me and you.
10.) A Girl Like You by Edwyn Collins
Without wasting words he'd play you this song hoping you'd understand how he felt about you. Billy was odd like that. He obsessed over lyrics and a song's meaning. When he realized he had a crush on you he immediately started making a list of songs that reminded him of you. They could put his emotions into words when he couldn't.
Stu
1.) In The Meantime by Spacehog
Stu loves music. He doesn't care about lyrics although they can make a song better. If he likes instruments he'll buy the album. Will buy a whole album for one song. This is one example. Stu doesn't like what he calls "sad bastard music." You will rarely catch him listening to music he knows will bum him out.
2.) Blood Makes Noise by Suzanne Vega
This song itches his brain every time he listens to it. Stu is odd. He likes rock but if there's too much going on it freaks him out. Not one for screamo makes him feel like he's being yelled at. This song is on his sex playlist do what you will with that information.
3.) Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana
Nirvana fan first human second. He has a crush on Kurt Cobain. Hates Cortney Love like she's Yoko Ono. Stu likes to learn about bands and artists' personal lives. He's nosey. "Can you believe that shit? I'd treat them so much better." Stu would rant to his friend about a random celebrity making Billy want to drink Draino.
4.) Paradise By the Dashboard Light by Meatloaf
He thinks the song is hilarious. Will perform the 8-minute-long song at karaoke. There will be an empty room once he's done. He doesn't regret his actions.
5.) A.D.I.D.A.S by Korn
It was your fault. You picked out the movie Say Anything and made him watch it. You woke up at 3 in the morning to Stu loudly blasting this song outside of your house. Not only was it funny it was romantic to him. Cops were called.
6.) I Was Made For Lovin' You by KISS
This is one of Stu's favorite songs. When he was little he was obsessed with KISS. He'd put on a full face of face paint and he'd stain his tongue and hands with red food coloring. The boy would run around the house singing and dancing. To his parents, however, Stu's unserious habit of playing with makeup wasn't something they were proud of. His music taste is all over the place because he constantly went through different phases trying to figure out what he could do to please his parents. Nothing ever did.
7.) Peaches by The Presidents of the United States
If you write a song that sounds good and had some goofy ass lyrics Stu's sold. Stu will sing this every time the school lunch consists of peaches. Billy has thrown several trying to get his friend to shut up.
8.) Iron Man by Black Sabbath
Stu loves to stir up shit and have arguments. He was actually on the debate team for his freshman and sophomore years of high school. Billy thinks Ozzy Osbourne is better alone than with Black Sabbath. Every time this is brought up Stu acts like a little piece of him dies. Plus when this song comes on the radio Stu likes to cover his mouth imitating the voice at the beginning. It's where they got the whole ghostface voice idea from.
9.) Fight For Your Right by Bestie Boys
Stu is a huge fan of The Beastie Boys. Their first record is a go-to when there's a party at his is. Of course, this is his favorite song of theirs. The amount of times that man has bounced around an empty house blasting that band is almost worrying.
10.) Psycho Killer by The Talking Heads.
Best for last. If Stu had a theme song this would be it. In his movie, it'd play as he's running around as Ghostface. He has a lot of energy so he loves to chase people. Randy called him an "evil golden retriever" once and Stu likes the comparison.

What are three songs that make your soul leave your body (in a good way) and one song that makes you shrivel up a little inside (in a bad way)?
My current (non musical theatre) top 3 songs:
- 'Meteor shower' by cavetown. Used to play it to my cousin when he got upset, always managed to calm him down, and we would sit together for hours afterwards and just talk, so I have some bittersweet memories with this one. It's just a very comforting song in general and is still my go-to whenever I feel down
- 'Ava' by famy. It's just... amazing? I don't know what it is about this song, but the instrumentals are absolutely amazing. There's actually a good chance you've heard it before if you use tiktok, I think it got pretty popular on there a while back. The music is sooo good, and there's a choral type part as well which makes my brain so happy
- 'trees lll' by mccafferty. OK, so this one is actually quite a depressing song. It's about how the singer is hiding being gay from everyone around him, how his wish is to come out and be able to kiss his partner, how he feels his sexuality is a sin and he wishes he could go back to when he was younger and life was simpler. Warning if you want to listen: it talks about topics such as self-harm and suicidal thoughts, self-hatred, church related homphobia, and neglectful and/or abusive parents. It's horrible, but for me, it's quite comforting? As a mostly closeted queer person (mostly to my family, I'm out to my friends), it's sort of nice to know I'm not the only one experiencing this. I know that sounds sort of horrible, but this song speaks to me in a way no other has. Apart from that, the vocals are a bit iffy, but the music 100% makes up for that, the instrumentals are beautiful
(I would reccomend listening to cavetown and mccaffertys other songs, especially their more popular albums! Such good music. If you listen to these and like them, I can give you recs if you want?)
The song that makes me shrivel up inside:
Ok I'm gonna be honest, but I can't think of any songs I don't like rn. I know there are some, especially the stuff my brother listens to (rap music? No thank you) but I cannot for the life of me remember any name. Have these 2 joke answers instead:
- farmer refuted from Hamilton. I know I said no musicals, but oh my god I hate this song. Hamilon was the first musical I ever watched or listened to, and I love it sm. I know every word, can rewatch it in my head, and know so many pieces if information about the real life people featured in it. I hyperfixated on it for about 6 months, and in that time I learned everything there was to know about the process of it being made, the symbolism ect. I love this show and everything about it. Except farmer refuted. I don't know what it is about this song, I just can't listen to it. It annoys me so much, the music makes me uncomfortable, the overlapping voices hurt my ears, I just don't like it. Don't get me wrong, it's a good song, I just can't listen to it
- mozarts clarinet concerto in a major. Had to study this piece for 2 years for my music gcse (exams you take at 16 before you finish school, I think sort of like finals?). I'm not the biggest fan of mozart in the first place, but 3-4 hours a week of the same piece over and over again for 2 years was just a little bit too much mozart for me. The worst part is that it's the intro music to an audio book my mum always listens to, so even now I've finished school I still hear it all the time 😭
#thank you!!#i live music this one was genuinely fun to answer#took a while to narrow it down to 3 tho#eventually decided to get rid of this is home and renegades 😔#you should listen to these songs tho theyre very good

personality/headcanons
Plays a bunch of different instruments, absolute musical prodigy. Loooves learning new stuff, it's one of his favorite things to do. Main instruments are bass guitar and keyboard though
Prefers being in the background and was always really happy to let Matt Russo (his best friend and Kafka's frontman) have the attention. They never got arena-big but anyone who's really into the music scene has usually heard of them and for sure heard Matt's name at least, especially around LA/southern California
Not so much soft spoken as just like, not a huge talker. He's more of a listener. Will get more chatty with his close friends and definitely when he's drunk, but otherwise he's not gonna say too much unless he's being engaged
Is always working on some little side project in addition to production for Bath House and also guest producing on albums for much bigger artists (he's that name where you're like why have I heard this before, and it's because he produced that one Carly Rae Jepsen/Sabrina Carpenter/Lizzie McAlpine song you were obsessed with two years ago)
His main side gig is a project called Love Sucks Sometimes with his friend Elias Kipling. It's extremely weird and experimental and they get maybe 15k streams a month on Spotify if that.
Some LSS vibe songs: X, X, X,
He's very level-headed, he's not really gonna argue with you unless it's something very important to him
Pretty much only does long term relationships, falls in love hard and takes a long time between relos when one ends because he takes it very seriously
Used to do a lot of coke back in the day when the band first started touring but hasn't been into it as much in the last 5 or 6 years, maybe dabbling occasionally. Smokes a ton of weed
brief biography
Eddie grew up in a suburban neighborhood of Jersey City in a nice house and a middle class family, the child of a financial advisor (his mom) and a high school math teacher (his dad). He's the oldest of three kids, with a sister seven years younger than him and a brother in between. Because his parents both worked, they typically put Eddie in charge of his siblings, which, especially by the time he hit high school, impeded his freedom a lot. He's the type of person that resented his parents for it and tried not to misdirect his anger at his brother and sister, but they absolutely felt the consequences of it now and then, particularly in his junior and senior years. There was a lot of unhealthy stuff between him and his parents and whenever he could, Eddie spent a lot of time at his best friend Matt's house (who would end up being the frontman of Kafka). His parents were slightly insane and very conservative, but they recognized Eddie's parenting situation as being kind of dire and were always happy to have him over. His own parents were actually crazy, and would do things like locking him out of the house if he came home after curfew and snooping through his room for drugs. He has a terrible relationship with them these days, rarely goes to visit except for holidays, and has reached a point now where he knows there's never gonna be a relationship there and has accepted it. Kafkaesque started getting attention just after he and Matt and their two other friends in the band graduated high school in 2010/11ish. They released a few EPs and then finally their debut album, Kafkaesque, in November of 2012. Two years later in 2014 they released their sophomore album, Fear In Unexpected Places, and then Mass Hallucination in 2017. They were on hiatus for four years after that, dropped their last album, Hope This Helps, in 2021, and toured it briefly as an opening act for Submergence. They've been on hiatus again since then. There are a few singles that made it onto the radio but otherwise they were always a smaller band with a relatively small but dedicated following. It was in 2022, just under two years ago now, that Eddie and another producer friend of his co-founded their own music label, Bath House. Eddie's experimental project, Love Sucks Sometimes, is signed to the label, as well as a small but growing list of other alternative/experimental artists. He mainly lives in Aurora Bay, enjoying the slower pace than Los Angeles, which he isn't crazy about, and travels when he needs to.
connection ideas
Anyone from the music industry
Also doesn't even have to be from the industry, just people he's worked on side projects/collabs with from artists who have maybe designed album art for him, other musicians, singers who featured on a single, choreographers/set designers/stylists who helped with a music video, literally anything from that world official or not
An ex or two (would have been serious long-term relationships)
Friends in general! Smoking buddies, music friends (not professionally, just other music lovers), people he met in LA/while traveling for tours, etc.
The crazy to his calm
Some kind of parental figure(s) that soothe the hole in his soul left by his actual parents
Sibling vibes, he's such an older brother but could also be cute if he experienced being the younger sibling vibe

hmm lets say The Doors - Soft Parade for the album ask game?? ✨ (underrated yes it isss)
Oh Gosh, the one album by them that I didn't buy and I don't want it - although there are some good tracks, but I usually don't listen to it. I actually had to listen to it again to give you answers, so without further ado <3
1. Favourite and least favourite track?
"Runnin' Blue" would be my favorite. I don't know, it's just so catchy, plus the intro always gets me. Morrison just sings without any instruments, his voice makes wonders to me <3
Now to the least favorite, I thought I will go with "Do It", but Densmore's drumming is fantastic in this one, so nope. So I will go with "Wishful Sinful" then. It's too much of an orchestral piece, just doesn't fit in and it's kind of boring to me on the long run. I never skipped it, because I don't listen to this album often, but like, boring in the long run XD
2. Side A or B? (for later releases: first half or second half; for doubles: A, B, C or D?)
Oh, definitely side B and that includes: "Wild Child", "Runnin' Blue", "Wishful Sinful" and "The Soft Parade". Excluding "Wishful Sinful", this side has almost all of my favorite tracks on this album <3
3. Thoughts on the cover art/packaging?
It's nothing special, like comparing it to the third album, for example, it ain't nothing special. Maybe if the band was a lot closer it would be better, but like, I don't know. Even the font isn't good. You just gotta look at any other album of theirs and the covers are better XD
4. Are any of the tracks important/meaningful to you? Why?
I don't think there are any? Wait, let me read the lyrics XD Nope, there aren't any, I think I like those few songs for the melody and Jim's voice mostly <3
5. When did you first hear the album?
Oh God, was it when I just listened to all of their album at one day? It was definitely around December 2022. 22nd of December - my mom's birthday! It was when I've decided to listen to one album of their per day. Just one listen to get the general feel. It was when I was getting into older music, just before my obsession with The Doors truly started.
6. Have your thoughts on the album changed since you first heard it?
Oh yeah, they did. I was just getting used to their sound and you know, this album is far different from the rest and I liked it quite a lot, just to then realize that it's boring in the long run and doesn't have the feeling that for example "Waiting For The Sun" or "L.A. Woman" brings in when I listen to them. So the opinion went from "Hey, this is good!" to "Eh, I can live without it".
7. Are you a fan of other works by the artist/in the genre?
Of course! "Waiting For The Sun" is my favorite The Doors album. I have this one certain day during each month when I listen to it and feel myself calming down while each song plays. "Love Street", "Summer's Almost Gone", "Wintertime Love", "Yes, The River Knows", "Five To One" those are the few I'm mad about - I love "Yes, The River Knows" so much that I learned how to play the vocal melody on classic guitar <3 You can only imagine how happy I was when I've saw it at the record store. I took it without any thoughts, just bought it right away!
8. A lyric you like from the album
Definitely the intro to "Runnin' Blue"
Poor Otis dead and gone Left me here to sing his song Pretty little girl with the red dress on Poor Otis dead and gone
It's just so catchy, the rest of the song is wacky in a way, but like the line "Pretty little girl with the red dress on" is so well done, it just gets into your ear and doesn't want to leave, you know
9. How did you discover the album?
Been listening to one The Doors album per day and I just played it because it was the next in queue. Nothing much of a big discovery I know, but what can you do? XD
10. Do you own/would you like to own a physical copy of the album?
I had like two chances to get it at the record store and even if I thought about buying it, seeing it there for the first time, there's always another album I want more. Plus, I think I can live without it. I mean, I only have to get the first The Doors album to have all of them at home that I like. So yeah, I don't want it that much.
#thank you for asking#it was fun <3#also I had to listen to the album again#that was a nice trip back to 2022#ask corner

Album Thoughts : Pawprint Panic
I wanna start listening to more music without lyrics to try and think/learn more about how music is constructed. So I'm gonna document my thoughts in posts! It's kind of like an art study except I've never been taught how to properly study music like I have illustrations
I recently found this cool album by Napcast on YouTube, you can listen here or you can go buy it off their Bandcamp here. I have full intentions of buying this eventually, I want to get more music off bandcamp and make a playlist that ISN'T on YouTube for plane rides.
ANYWAYS, into the music! This album has 9 tracks, is that long or short for an album? I've never really listened to a lot of them, but I like this one a lot.
Me talking about this may not be the most in-depth since i'm not super knowledgeable! That's the point, is to learn!
Track 1: Pawprint Panic!
The titular title track! It feels simply constructed, but all of these tracks are styled after SNES era game music so that's not entirely suprising, those are meant to be catchy and communicate feel right? It's got these two tracks that establish a nice sense of rhythm for most of the song and it uses everything else around it to add variation! I think this track is very fun.
Track 2: Record Scratch
Builds up similarly to the first track, with the instruments establishing the beat coming in before everything else. I think this track pulls a way from that a bit more than the other one, though. I like the synth piano very much, it's fun hearing where the song adds to and pulls away layers to give depth.
Track 3: CD Collecting
Oh man these horns and the guitar are really fun! I hadn't thought about harmonizing with instruments but I think I'm hearing that with some parts of the piano? I think I want to try that! It sounds really cool!!
Track 4: Signals
This was done in some of the other tracks I think, but I like hearing where a beat is established and it then switches to a difficult instrument to recontextualize it! Also I have no idea what the main instruments is, but I like it a lot! That's such a dreamy sound! I can't tell if it's some sort of horn or piano, it's edited pretty heavily so I don't know what the original sample may have been (if there was one to begin with).
Track 5: Red Sky at Morning
Oh I love the way the piano and the bass line work together, that's very,,,ear catching? It got my attention really quick! Listening to this, I feel like I can draw a clear shape in my mind to represent how the song progresses, sort of like those plot line graphs you'd see in school. I think I like that a lot! Listening to a song and it being easy to imagine in a more visual way helps me learn a lot, I want to try putting that into practice now that it's started to click.
Track 6: Snowcap Myriads
I think the opening on this one is very striking too! The pacing on this song feels different compared to the others towards the end? I like it! Playing with length and timing and less drawn-out endings sounds very fun!
Track 7: Seaside Summer
A lot more of the instruments come in at once in this track compared to some others on the album! I think I like the sound of this, but I think having them come in slowly feels easier to comprehend as a beginner trying to make stuff? Handling those layers one at a time feels much more manageable. Though, with that said I still struggle knowing how to build up layers that sound nice together!
Track 8: Lead Me to Paradise
I think the melodies on this one are interesting, it really does feel like a video game character singing an emotional ballad. I also really like what I think is some kind of drum beat? The way it pulls back to simple piano notes in the end with little to no accompaniment feels very memorable.
Track 9: Aftercircus
Oh I LOVE these horns! The way the songs speeds up gradually to build tension and slows back down to release it feels clever, I wonder if that portion is in a different BPM or if it's all the same and slower moments just have notes spread further out? I don't know how to have a track with a different BPM in certain sections in the app I use but I think I want to try and figure out how to recreate something like that eventually

what are fun beatles facts you’ve put in your fics
Hi anon!! Sorry for forgetting you!!! TBH maybe they're not as fun or not as much facts as I may have made them seem but here are a few from ILTY:
I point out in chapter 2 that George and John bought matching Gibson guitars (in 1962, following them earning the contract with EMI iirc; I didn't specify the date in the fic though)
Paul talks about when he uses the Höfner vs when he uses the Rickenbacker bass, saying the Höfner is good for live sounds because it's lighter. He says something like that in Get Back, I believe!
In chapter 3 when Cyn and John are looking through a scrapbook there aren't any wedding photos because there really weren't any! No photographer was present :(
I also reference this real letter John wrote to Cyn in chapter 3
also point out in that chapter that while John basically immediately married Cyn upon learning he had gotten her pregnant, Paul stalled with Dot up until her miscarriage and then broke off their engagement.
in chapter 4 I describe this weird trailer thing, which John really had in his garden though I've now learned he actually only acquired it a year later in 1967 so
This isn't historical but the bit in chapter 4 where I describe how John plays I Feel Fine is how you actually play the song lol. I didn't detail it much cause it's not very interesting, but I watched a tutorial for it and everything. I also did some rudimentary sitar + Indian classical music research for the relevant part in chapter 10. It's not directly mentioned in the text but I did my best to make sure I wasn't saying something outright wrong about the instruments basic function.
In chapter 5 I point out that John has a Stu painting in his house, which he really did IIRC
The idea that John may have recorded himself reading from Timothy Leary's book Book of the Dead and played it back while dropping acid it isn't one I made up but I believe it's from Goldman so. Grain of salt fun fact. (mentioned in chapters 4, 6 and 8)
From chapter 7: "They bloody invented automatic double-trackin’ just so Johnny could be here less." ATD was indeed developed by engineers at EMI studios because John found double tracking his vocals extremely annoying lmao.
there's some description in chapter 7 of stuff the Beach Boys and Beatles stole from each other that's to my knowledge accurate. also the song playing on the radio was in the charts the week the chapter takes place during, which I pointed out in the author's notes (I generally have kept track of the dates in my story)
Paul beginning to write Here, There and Everywhere, specifically the intro, right after listening to Pet Sounds is based on him saying the intro is inspired by God Only Knows (he starts writing the intro just after playing GOK in the story). He recalls writing the song at John's house, an he completes it in chapter 8, also at Kenwood, while waiting for John (this time simply to come down stairs rather than wake up) — this is less a fun fact but more my fun adaptation of true events.
I double checked this like three times when I wrote the chapter, but IIRC it's totally accurate that the band recorded brass for the first time one day after the Pet Sounds listening party (chapter 8)
I reference the horrible experience the band really had in February 64 at the English embassy in Washington DC in chapter 8, though the specific anecdote Paul recalls from that evening is entirely made up by me.
this is pretty well-known, but Isn't It A Pity was likely a Revolver-reject, which is why it's briefly considered for the album in chapter 8, given the circumstances
This is my own conjecture but I 100% believe that Day Tripper is about Paul and I made that canon at the end of chapter 8 lol.
This isn't exactly a fact but the questions asked in the Munich press conference in chapter 9 are for the most part similar to real questions they were asked. Including the weird one about participating in the Munich Olympics lmaooooo
Again more of an adaptation than a straight-up fact but John and Paul did visit the Grosse Freiheit when they were in Hamburg for that tour!
Also the geography described in Hamburg should be right, I used a map lol.
Paul DID change the I'll Follow The Sun lyrics!!!! Go listen to the quarrymen bootleg it's one of my favourite things I've used, that it used to be "Don't leave me alone"
Also they did get to play around with some Japanese instruments while in Tokyo and they're some of the softest pics of the band :) I did simplify the events a bit though
George was very worried about being arrested for drug possession when the band got separated from their luggage in Manila.
George did ask Ravi Shankar to take him on as his student in summer 66 but I don't know when exactly.
I think that's a fair amount lol hope these lived up to your expectations :(
#god this took wayyyyyyy too long#but its a good thing to look over my own story from back to front#(didnt READ the whole thing ofc just scrolled through everything)#ask#anon#fic

15.02.2023 - Tribute to Rachid Baba Ahmed - Radio Show notes
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c16663f1085c38be1a2da240e63894c4/74aa463989731174-1d/s540x810/95e2dc8a0a8f3466b0ba68d1c7fe1295ccc99cf1.jpg)
On the 15th of February, it was the 28th anniversary of the passing of Rachid Baba Ahmed. He was tragically assassinated by Islamic fundamentalists in front of his record store during the Algerian civil war. Rachid was a highly influential record producer from Algeria who modernised Rai music, elevating it to an international level. He owned a studio in Tlemcen that was modeled after Chris Blackwell's London Island Records studio (the same studio that Bob Marley recorded at), and he was always welcoming to up-and-coming Rai singers such as Cheb Khaled, Cheb Hamid, Sahraoui, and Fadela, among others.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a3f166eb8a50260e7f71669ffbbb8039/74aa463989731174-52/s540x810/9b65d95ce86984a35af84171466eb9d8d5e30bf5.jpg)
Born in 1946 in the western Algerian city of Tlemcen, Rachid grew up in an artistic family with a musician for a father. He quickly learned and mastered the Oud and joined a band playing Andalusian music since his teenage years. He later ventured into pop rock and disco, forming a duo with his brother Fethi and releasing some of the best North African Disco 45s, including "Mnami Twil" and "Ana Gharib." Eventually, Rachid transitioned to more electronic music before finally focusing on Rai in the late 80s.
Rachid's eclectic and sophisticated catalogue earned him the nickname of the Algerian "Jean Michel Jarre," and he was undoubtedly a pioneer that left an incredible musical legacy for Algeria.
1 - The Essential Hamid by Rachid & Fethi - Intro & Instrumental - 1985
A call from a fan to the studio “Editions Rally”, asking for the new music produced for Cheb Hamid - first to answer the phone was Fethi before passing it to Rachid who asks the fan to stay tuned in to listen to the latest release. After the instrumental portion, Rachid follows up with the fan to ask for feedback on the track. The name of their label "Editions Rally" is related to the fact that both brothers are Rally Racing amateurs, and Rachid even won competitions on multiple ocasions.
2 - Rachid & Fethi - Mnami Twil - 1974
Rachid & Fethi's debut single introduced Algeria to the vibrant sounds of psychedelic funky soul music and marked a significant milestone as one of the first video clips ever produced by an Algerian band.

3 - Rachid & Fethi - Ana Ghrib - 1976
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/11eb19757f80b90971b3dc480044e890/74aa463989731174-db/s500x750/593ee2cb9770efb8dbceb3da85d3c02887cc0214.jpg)
4 - Rachid & Fethi - Sidi El Maalam - 1975 This particular track exudes a surf pop rock vibe and could have been part of a Californian music documentary. It's evident that the artists draw inspiration from the western music culture, and this song perfectly showcases their eclectic style in their productions.
5 & 6 - Rachid Baba Ahmed - Album : Altitude 800 - O.D.B. + Asteroide V.2. - 1984
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/974ccc329038d389799a1a18510f670b/74aa463989731174-d4/s540x810/08a72db8d710345dc2ee46e23d86d3ce16fe6634.jpg)
In my opinion, the top tracks by Rachid Baba come from what is likely my favorite album of theirs. This cassette stands out as a pivotal moment in their career, marking the shift towards producing more electronic disco music. Each track is named after a music recording element, , such as "Multitrack," "Line-out," "Limiters," and so on.
This album is a marker of the transition to the phase of their career where they started producing some more disco electronic stuff - in this album every track is called after a music recording feature - Multitrack / Line-out / Limiters / …
7 - Rachid Baba Ahmed - Racine - 1990
Recently reissued by Maghreb K7 Club, on the disco singles collaboration between the labels Sofa Records and Les disques Bongo Joe.
8 - Rachid & Fethi - Mexico - 1986
The legend says that Rachid composed this music in just 24 hours following Algeria's 3-0 victory over Tunisia in Tunis, which secured their spot in the Football World Cup in Mexico. The track is a testament to Rachid's Andalusian influences from his teenage years, with trumpets, guitarron, and mariachi sounds, combined with football chants vocals, to capture the excitement and anticipation surrounding the Algerian national team's journey to Mexico.
youtube
9 - Cheb Sahraoui - Aachki Aouel - 1983 A classic, nothing to say here apart from that I love the fact that Awesome Tapes From Africa started his Boiler Room set in Viva! Festival with this track!
youtube
10 - Chaba Zahouania - Goulou Lima (Tell my Mom) - 1988
youtube
Ryuichi Sakamoto, the pioneering Japanese producer, composed the music for the movie "The Sheltering Sky" and selected this track from Zahouania's album "Nights without Sleeping" produced by Rachid baba Ahmed to be included in the film.
11 - Cheb Sahraoui & Fadela - N’sel Fik - 1987
One of the most renowned Rai music tracks, this song has achieved global success and has been played in various corners of the world: from its origin in Tlemcen to Santa Monica, and throughout Europe. During the recording session of this track at Rachid's studio, Sahraoui introduced his wife Fadela and suggested to record the song as a duo. After the first take, Rachid declared it perfect, without the need for additional recordings.
Below a video of Fadela & Sahraoui live concert in Santa Monica, California playing N'sel Fik.
youtube
12 - Rachid Baba Ahmed - House Rai Music - 1988
"House Rai Music" appears to be strongly influenced by the dance music scene of its time, incorporating elements of acid house and electro with the distinct vocals of Fadela and Sahraoui. This fusion provides a rare glimpse into the early house music influences in the MENA region, and serves as a testament to raï's ascent to become a prominent 'world music' genre.

The Science of Streaming: How Music Streaming Algorithms Work
Ever wondered how music streaming services seem to know exactly what you want to listen to? The magic behind these personalized recommendations lies in sophisticated algorithms powered by data science and machine learning. This article explores the science behind music streaming algorithms, explaining how they work, their benefits, challenges, and their impact on our listening experience.
Body:
1. The Role of Data in Music Streaming: Music streaming services collect vast amounts of data from their users. This data includes:
Listening History: Tracks, albums, and playlists you've listened to.
User Interactions: Actions such as likes, skips, and shares.
Demographic Information: Age, location, and gender.
Contextual Data: Time of day, weather, and even activity (e.g., workout, relaxation).
This rich dataset forms the foundation of the algorithms that power music streaming services.
2. Types of Music Streaming Algorithms:
Collaborative Filtering: Collaborative filtering is a popular technique used in recommendation systems. It works by finding patterns and similarities in user behavior. There are two main types:
User-Based Collaborative Filtering: Recommends content based on what similar users have liked. For example, if User A and User B have similar listening habits, songs liked by User B might be recommended to User A.
Item-Based Collaborative Filtering: Recommends items that are similar to what the user has enjoyed. For instance, if you like a particular song, the algorithm will suggest other songs that users who liked that song also enjoyed.
Content-Based Filtering: Content-based filtering focuses on the attributes of the music itself. This method analyzes various characteristics of songs, such as genre, tempo, instrumentation, and mood. If a user likes a song with certain attributes, the algorithm recommends other songs with similar characteristics.
Hybrid Models: Many streaming services use a combination of collaborative and content-based filtering to enhance recommendation accuracy. Hybrid models leverage the strengths of both approaches, offering more personalized and precise recommendations.
3. Machine Learning and Deep Learning: Machine learning plays a crucial role in refining music recommendations. By continuously learning from user interactions and feedback, these algorithms improve over time. Some key techniques include:
Supervised Learning: Algorithms are trained on labeled data, learning to predict user preferences based on past behavior.
Unsupervised Learning: Algorithms identify patterns and clusters in user data without predefined labels, helping to uncover hidden relationships and preferences.
Deep Learning: Advanced neural networks, particularly recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs), are used to model complex patterns in music and user behavior.
4. The Role of Metadata: Metadata is essential for organizing and categorizing music. It includes information like song title, artist, album, genre, release date, and mood. High-quality metadata ensures accurate recommendations and efficient search results. Streaming services invest in robust metadata management systems to enhance their recommendation algorithms.
5. Personalized Playlists and Recommendations: Streaming services use algorithms to create personalized playlists, such as Spotify’s Discover Weekly and Apple Music’s For You. These playlists are tailored to individual tastes based on listening history and preferences. The goal is to introduce users to new music they are likely to enjoy, enhancing user satisfaction and engagement.
6. Contextual Recommendations: Contextual recommendations consider the user's current situation, such as the time of day, weather, and activity. For example, a streaming service might suggest upbeat songs for a morning workout or relaxing tunes for a rainy evening. Context-aware algorithms use sensors and external data sources to provide relevant recommendations.
7. Challenges and Limitations:
Data Privacy: Collecting and analyzing user data raises privacy concerns. Streaming services must balance personalization with user privacy, ensuring compliance with regulations like GDPR.
Algorithmic Bias: Algorithms can inadvertently reinforce existing biases in music recommendations, limiting diversity. Ensuring a broad and inclusive music discovery experience is crucial.
Overfitting: Algorithms may become too tailored to a user’s current preferences, making it difficult to discover new and diverse music. Regular updates and algorithm tweaks are necessary to avoid this issue.
8. The Impact on Music Discovery: The algorithms behind music streaming have significantly impacted how we discover new music. Personalized recommendations expose users to a wider range of artists and genres, fostering music exploration and discovery. Independent artists benefit from algorithmic exposure, reaching new audiences without the need for major label backing.
9. Future Trends in Music Streaming Algorithms:
Explainable AI: Enhancing transparency in how recommendations are made can increase user trust and satisfaction. Explainable AI aims to provide insights into the reasoning behind specific recommendations.
Enhanced Personalization: Future algorithms will offer even more granular personalization, considering factors like mood, activity, and social interactions.
Real-Time Adaptation: Algorithms will become more responsive to real-time changes in user behavior and context, providing instantly relevant recommendations.
Conclusion: The algorithms behind music streaming are a blend of data science and user behavior analysis, providing a tailored listening experience. Understanding these algorithms can deepen our appreciation for the technology driving music discovery. As technology evolves, so too will the sophistication and accuracy of music streaming algorithms, continually enhancing our listening experiences.

Interview with Channelers (December 2021)
Steve Targo, of Nimbudala, interviewed Sean Conrad about his latest Channelers albums on Inner Islands. The interview was conducted in a Q&A format over email.
1. What made you decide to pick up the guitar again? Was it the desire to learn finger picking?
It was really a matter of working with my limitations at the time. At the time I had a rehearsal space that I could get loud in (where I recorded a lot of Isles Beyond), but it was shut down because of the lockdown. And my apartment is a very small one bedroom that I share with my partner, Rosa, so it’s usually a bit of a hassle to set up my gear and then tear it down every time I want to play. So acoustic guitar is pretty much the only instrument that’s compact enough to leave out, that I can casually just pick up and play for a little bit. I was inspired to try fingerpicking with my whole right hand (as opposed to the two-finger method I used to employ) while reading the book Dazzling Stranger, about Bert Jansch and the ‘60s folk revival. More fingers means more possibilities!
2. How come you stopped playing for a while? It seems that guitar was prominent in your early music as Ashan & gkfoes vjgoaf.
I kind of phased out of playing as much guitar around 2013 when I got my dulcimer. That really satisfied a lot of my acoustic desires and was a new sound to play with. I also got much more into making electronic music. At this point I’m less interested in electronic pursuits and just want to play tactile instruments.
3. Despite the gentle, soothing nature of Another Entrance, you sound re-invigorated in your playing. Was it because of the guitar or was it more from being inspired by 60s British folk music?
It’s probably a combination of things. I’ve been listening to a lot less atmospheric and ambient music and more to folk, rock, pop, and other more attention-centric musics. Also, I composed the majority of the pieces on AE before recording them (except the two piano pieces) and spent a long time practicing them. I feel like I was able to bring a lot more energy and confidence to the performances when it came time to lay them down on tape.
4. What is it about that scene, that music, that inspired you?
I love that so much of that music has these threads which trace back into antiquity. There is such a rich heritage to that folk music. It has always been in flux: people changing lyrics, changing tunes, and passing those along (most orally/aurally) for generations. It’s constantly in evolution and there is no such thing as a definitive version of any of those pieces. When people started collecting those songs in the late 1800s and writing them down and recording them on wax cylinders and such, people were in a preservationist mindset. Those tunes kind of stagnated for decades and decades and in the 1960s musicians were decidedly much more free with their interpretations of that work and breathed a new life into it and wrote new music in the spirit of those tunes. I think it’s that new breath in confluence with a lot of other things that were happening at the time.
5. Really, you released two Channelers albums on 10/22. Were the songs on Messages From One of Deeper Within recorded the same time as those on Another Entrance? How did you decide which song appeared on which album?
Side A of “Messages” was recorded at the same time. Side B is a track from the “Isles Beyond” sessions and a track from the “Faces of Love” sessions. I made a lot of different playlists for possible versions of AE, which all told different narratives. The narrative I went with was the one that I felt most dialogued with the album cover. There were a lot of other pieces from those sessions still to choose from for “Messages” and I just picked tracks that were mostly focused on the performance of a solo instrument.
6. You have developed a unique & captivating style in your role as artist. How do you create the illustrations you use for album art? Is it 100% digital? If so, why & what program(s) do you use?
I use Adobe Photoshop and sometimes Illustrator. Yeah, it’s all digital. My laptop has a touchscreen, so I’m also able to use a stylus for some human touch.
7. What projects are you working on now?
I’m wrapping up a collaborative album with Rosa. Hopefully it will be out early next year! I’m finishing another collaboration with Matt and Ash from Flower Room. And I’m always working on new material with Michael Henning for our Skyminds project. We get together every week and work on tracks. We have about six hours of unreleased material at the moment and we’re hoping to release some of it soon! I’m also beginning to work on another Channelers album.
8. Let’s talk about Inner Islands, which is 11 years old now! What keeps you going in your role as head of the label? What does the future hold for Inner Islands?
It’s kinda wild how long it’s been going now! And I’ve been running it for 8 of those years, which sounds way longer than it’s felt. I feel like Inner Islands is my musical home; it’s this sacred and deeply comfortable space for me. And what Inner Islands “is” is both this unchanging thing, this field that Braden established at the outset, and yet the manifestations of that are always changing and developing. I get a lot of joy out of teasing out that thread! The future holds a further unraveling of that musical journey.
9. What inspires you right now?
Moving my body every day! I’ve also seen a lot of heart-centric TV shows this year, which has been enlivening: Star Trek (Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager), Ted Lasso, and Pose, among others. Musically, I just went through a deep phase with King Crimson and related projects. The McDonald and Giles album was a revelation. My friend, Noah Klein, has also been a part of setting up the FLOATING outdoor show series in Los Angeles and I got to play and attend a couple of those in October. They were fantastic! I hope to see more music outdoors soon.
10. What words of wisdom do you like to recall in times of need?
I am the creator of my own experience. I always find that to be an empowering idea.
Channelers is the work of Sean Conrad. He recently released Another Entrance and Messages From One of Deeper Within on Inner Islands on October 22nd on vinyl, cassette, and digital formats. The albums are available from our Bandcamp page.

Battling Mortality Through Music With Hákon Hjaltalín In this interview, we delve into the musical journey of the young and vibrant artist, Hákon Hjaltalín. Hákon, known for his latest single "Battle with Mortality," is an aspiring multi-talented artist determined to make a positive impact on the world through his music. Drawing inspiration from classic rock and the musical influences of the 60s, Hákon's songwriting takes center stage in his compositions. We learn about Hákon's early introduction to music, starting with his sister teaching him a simple melody on a keyboard at the tender age of four. Growing up in a family with a strong musical background, Hákon's passion for music continued to blossom. Influenced by iconic bands like The Beatles, Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd, he honed his skills in playing various instruments such as the violin, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. Through his creative process, Hákon emphasizes the importance of songwriting and crafting compelling lyrics. His musical style has evolved over time, but he remains determined to push his boundaries further. Instead of focusing on external competition, Hákon sees himself as his main competitor, constantly striving for personal growth. With an album titled "Shadows" on the horizon, Hákon Hjaltalín embraces the concept of battling mortality through his thought-provoking lyrics. As he continues his musical journey, Hákon's passion and determination promise an exciting future filled with artistic collaborations and further exploration of his craft. As we conclude the interview, Hákon shares his aspirations for the future, including extensive practice, band rehearsals, and gaining a broader musical knowledge. He also expresses the desire for recognition and sustainable income within the music industry, as well as more constructive feedback for aspiring artists. Listen to Battle With Mortality below Follow Hákon Hjaltalín on Facebook Twitter Spotify Soundcloud Bandcamp Youtube Instagram What is your stage name? Hákon Hjaltalín Is there a story behind your stage name? I got it when I was born :) It's an Icelandic name which might be hard to pronounce for non-Icelandic people, but I chose my own name rather than coming up with another one, though things might change in the future. Where do you find inspiration? I tend to enjoy older music, I grew accustomed to it through my childhood and in many cases I find it more interesting musically. Some of the 60's influences are very audible in my music, but I've contemplated developing a more unique sound for the future. What was the role of music in the early years of your life? My first memory of playing music must have been around age 4, my sister, who is 6 years older, taught me a very simple version of Ode to Joy on a small keyboard she used, and somehow I could pick up very simple melodies by ear. Soon after I started playing the violin with a teacher. Are you from a musical or artistic family? Music and art is prominent on my mother's side. Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry? The interest has grown throughout my entire life, since I started learning music from a teacher very young. How did you learn to sing/write/to play? Aside from the instruments I learned as a child (violin and guitar), I've been able to pick up the other instruments that I play in my music (piano, bass, drums) on my own, and writing is also something I had to experiment with, I've listened to The Beatles for a long time and they knew songwriting, so they taught me as well in a way. Singing did not come naturally to me, but I've worked with a teacher during some time and improved at my own speed. [caption id="attachment_50575" align="alignnone" width="1333"] Singing did not come naturally to me[/caption] What was the first concert that you ever went to and who did you see perform? It must have been a show in the town I grew up in, a small town in Iceland. I don't remember for sure who it was, but I doubt they were known far outside of Iceland.
How could you describe your music? Songwriting-focused. I think the strongest factor in the music I've recorded so far is the writing of the song and lyrics. Describe your creative process. Usually the chords/melodies come first. I might think of some chord progressions in my head or on the piano maybe, and when I think of something clever, for me it's a matter of finding a following melody or chord progression that makes sense in the context. I write the lyrics on top of that in the majority of cases, and one part of that is making the flow fit to the song melody properly. What is your main inspiration? Up until now, my inspiration has been limited to a fairly small number of bands from the 60's-70's such as The Beatles, Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and such bands. I'm working to expand my musical knowledge including listening to a bigger variety of music. What musician do you admire most and why? The Beatles have always had a place for me, their playing was fairly simple but their composing and songwriting skills were groundbreaking. The main pioneer of it all I think is Chuck Berry, his work was most revolutionary. Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career? Somewhat, but I'd like to evolve it further. Who do you see as your main competitor? Myself I'd say. Getting better at something means getting more advanced than you were before, and I try to compare my progress to myself only. What are your interests outside of music? I'm interested in programming, science, math and physics specifically. I also self-study business and finance. If it wasn't a music career, what would you be doing? I work part-time as a programmer for a government institution which is a demanding job and needs active study. Having programmed since I was a child I'd probably do that aside from music. What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music? Temporarily losing interest to some degree. When you stop practicing you lose the abilities you've been honing for all this time. https://open.spotify.com/artist/0V1YJohm23yGt198cwV8LZ If you could change one thing in the music industry, what would it be? Recognition and sustainable income. There is also a lot of competition, and detailed feedback on what must be improved is valuable, rather than rejecting someone without further explanation. Why did you choose this as the title of this project? Battle with Mortality speaks for itself in the lyrics. The album title, Shadows, is a diverse concept that appears in the lyrics in some songs on the album. What are your plans for the coming months? Practicing a lot, planning and organizing band practice, and learning about music and the industry. Do you have any artistic collaboration plans? I will be performing live following the album release in a 5-person band, and we have been discussing further creative collaboration under a band name.
