my arm got fucking ripped open as a kid because i wasn't ready for an anesthetic shot before oral surgery and they refused to give it to me AFTER i was already under the nitrous and i fell off the chair they held me down in to give me the shot.

my trauma from a needle injury that stuck with me for over 10 years (i'm still not fully over it!) could have been avoided by, oh, i don't know, LISTENING TO A CHILD FOR ONCE. there was no reason they couldn't give me the shot after i was on laughing gas and calmed down. no reason. there was no reason i had to have a half inch gash ripped into my arm and a shirt ruined and over a decade of trauma.

i'm finally to a point where i can get shots without having a full blown anxiety attack, but i still do get little flashes of that moment. and that's all because when i went to get my first covid vaccine, the nurse actually listened to me when i said i was terrified. she had me hold a dragon plushie i had with me and asked me about the dinosaur book i was reading; she told me to look away out the window and breathe slowly when she did it and told me exactly what she was doing and when the shot would happen. and i was perfectly fine.

since then, i can get routine vaccines perfectly fine with no tears, i give myself shots for my disability multiple times a month with no problem, i took a voluntary shot last week for my hip pain. that one good experience undid a decade of misery and having to be held down and given numbing cream and given a benzo before vaccines.

when i went to get my wisdom teeth removed and they had to place an iv for anesthesia (my first time having one while conscious), i told them about my previous experience, how i had trauma involving anesthesia for oral surgery, and they listened. every single one of the nurses in there worked together to help me. one of them, like the covid shot nurse, walked me through what was happening, prepared me for it, and the others kept me distracted by taking my blood pressure and doing all the other pre-surgery prep while the iv was being placed. and before i went under, the last thing i heard was all of them congratulating me for being so brave and only having one tear fall.

now i have to get routine blood tests for my disability, and while they're certainly more triggering than shots and typically end in me sobbing (or in one case, getting sick and blacking out briefly), i've had enough kind phlebotomists who actually listen when i talk about my trauma and accommodate me that i'm not terrified and needing to be restrained. a few weeks ago, i got blood drawn VOLUNTARILY for a fun lab for a class. i never thought i would be able to do that.

listening to kids and accommodating them and not forcing them to do things MATTERS. the entirety of my needle trauma that i'm still working through could have been avoided if that anesthesiologist listened to little 7(ish) year old me's concerns and fears and didn't force a fucking needle into my arm when i wasn't ready.

Also on topic of Consent: whenever somebody says "Kids should have bodily autonomy!" some guy always is like "You are too unrealistic. What will you do when a kid is seeing the doctor and doesn't want to get a shot? Would you just let them refuse the shot?"

Yeah I probably would. You're straight up asking the wrong person if you want the nice normal answer here. Doctors and nurses forcibly doing (relatively routine) things to my body against my protests when I was a small kid fucked me up so bad that as an adult anything medical related is a huge trigger for me, I've had persistent intrusive thoughts and recurring nightmares about medical procedures, and I can't have even the most basic tests and health checks done on top of it.

I hate talking about it because I can't get comfortable calling it "trauma" and I don't have any other words that are useful, but it's made my life so much harder and really scary since if I start having a weird symptom, there's nothing I can move myself to do about it.

I figured out a loophole where going to a pharmacy instead of a doctor's office for vaccines reduces some of the stress, but I was still in stress and misery for days before I went to get my tetanus shot. The repulsion is so intense it feels like I literally don't have control over myself, it feels like I can't make appointments or plans about such things out of my own free will, and so every year I have guilt guilt guilt guilt guilt about how I should get the flu shot, and it does nothing but ineffectually hurt me.

Vaccines save lives and all that, but when it comes right down to it, I don't think it's actually a net benefit to public health to give any percentage of kids lifelong psychological scars so deep and painful they're almost completely barred from accessing health care as adults.

I know I'm not the only one, far from it.

Not gonna go out on this limb on a 25k post, but maybe it’s okay that kids today don’t know as much about using an actual computer as we do/did? Is it useful knowledge? Of course it is. So is using a sewing machine or being able to rebuild your VW with a copy of that one book every VW driver used to have. That’s not the right question—most practical knowledge is useful after all. Now you can back up and look at the broader picture, the one that says, but your car should be repairable by you as long as you have clear instructions, and you should be able to alter your clothes or make your own, and yes, you should know how to organize the files on the desktop of your laptop. But the fact that for the most part it’s become easier and easier to just not do those things (if they can be done at all) isn’t exactly the fault of Kids Today.
