Note
do the qualities they'd hate thing in a separate post instead
si tu veux, I'm avoiding prepping a D&D session anyway.
Whalefall
Verity: Stupid. They're absolutely one of those people who acts a bit cynical and above-it-all to minimize the possibility of looking like a rube/says things they're really unsure of in a state of Schrodinger's Sarcasm depending on the reception. Also absolutely adores hearing gossip about other people's fuckups and bad decisions while preferring to gnaw off their arm than admit their own (serious ones, anyway). (<- one I have put the most thought into)
Yekeoul: A failure or a burden, in a fairly prosaic sense - someone who can't pull his own weight and is reliant on the charity and condescension of others. Bristles violently at anything that feels like slacking off in a way that anyone might hold against him, finds the performance of humbly begging favors mortifyingly humiliating.
Lei: Impulsive or uncontrolled. Not even so much violent specifically as just someone who doesn't have his emotions in order and can't be relied upon to keep his head and handle things sensibly and professionally.
Renata: A mark. Someone you can pull one over on or take advantage of without her ever being the wiser. She's the sort of person who gets into really impressive numbers of petty feuds but in the end can forgive just about anything except lying to her face and laughing at her behind her back.
Abhari (which I have put much less thought into the characters of)
Hira: Selfish/corrupt Iren: Foolish/imprudent Hayy: no single word, but complacent or comfortable with ignorance? Credulous of mysteries?
Valeria: possessed of delusions of grandeur? An embarrassment, someone who is humored but not respected. Jovin: A useless fop of a courtier, a relic whose time has passed Isidore: Mercenary, a man you can buy and sell
Adrien: Impious, less than perfectly devout Lionel: Dishonorable, in the sense of disgracing his inheritance and family Astrid: Ignorant, provincial, clueless of what's happening around her Dasra: Cowardly, especially in terms of superstition Patience: [answer unclear, ask again later]

“Condamnation Des Isidore,” La Presse. December 27, 1917. Page 01.

Hey! I'm looking for neutral to masculine 'cool' or 'enigmatic' names. Not exactly stereotypical cool-guy ones; something with personality and not just macho. Sorry for the sucky explanation. My last name has two syllables, and I'd prefer something with nickname potential. Thanks!
Cool name anon. Hopefully it isn’t too late, but I’d like uncommon to rare names. Thanks again!
Gotcha! Here are some names that I think could be cool or enigmatic seeming, that are also uncommon or rarer. As well, I think a two syllable last name is really versatile and a lot of different syllable patterns could work well! I listed a few nickname options for some of them after the name:

𝟏𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐲, 𝟏𝟗𝟒𝟎
“St. Pierre! Kaplan! You slow down in my hallway!” Madame Allard called after a pair of Year 12s who were darting toward the grand study hall. They hardly broke their pace as they rounded the corner and left their instructor scoffing in disbelief. The taller of the two, Maxence St. Pierre, pulled one of the double doors out of the way and led the charge inside.
Outside the main building of the Lycée Louis-Le-Grand boarding school, Paris was preparing for the summer solstice. Life was in bloom from the treetops to the street corners. It had been a quiet seven months since the declaration of war against Germany — too quiet, the boys could hear their instructors murmur in the hallways, what was once indistinct chatter now piquing interest among a gathering of some of their more attentive students.
Maxence sprinted through the stacks of the study hall, not even engaging in his ritual of dragging his fingertips across the spines of the books in passing. Behind him the footsteps of Isidore Kaplan joined his own in a harmonious thundering as they reached the eastern wing.
“Ellie! Ellie!” Maxence spoke up as he spotted a scrawny creature occupying a fine mahogany desk that was pushed up against a window that painted a clear visual of the 5th arrondissement of the city. “Radio! Tune your radio to the BBC!” he demanded, approaching the desk and leaning on it with palms down.
Looking up from his homework, Lionel Mercer blinked at the strange request. “BBC? Why?” he inquired as he glanced over to his portable radio he always carted along with him to study hall, considering the mischievous tendencies of his peers, and slowly began tampering with it.
“Chamberlain’s speaking,” Isidore told him. “I heard it from Monsieur Lévesque in geography.”
“I didn’t hear him say that,” Lionel replied with a confused frown on his lips.
Isidore was quick to roll his eyes. “Because you don’t pay attention to Lévesque until he’s blabbering on about latitude and longitude. Are you tuning it?!”
“I am! I am!” The smaller male exclaimed as his fingers worked diligently on the dials. Soon enough, the crackling voice of a news anchor could be heard signing on the Prime Minister. The three boys exchanged glances with one another, wondering simultaneously what this was all about, if it was worthy of any fuss at all.
Their equal breaths drew to a close as a deeper voice began his announcement.
“... Hitler added another to the horrible crimes which already disgrace his name by a sudden attack on Holland, Belgium, and Luxembourg. In all history, no other man has been responsible for such a hideous total of human suffering and misery as he ...” Chamberlain began. The boys couldn’t seem to lure any air through their nostrils or mouths as they listened to the Prime Minister.
Lionel was the first to say something. “They’ve invaded the Low Countries?” he asked without any breath. Maxence reached down and placed a gentle hand on Lionel’s shoulder, silencing him without words.
“It was clear, that at this critical moment in the war, what was needed was the formation of a government which would include members of the labor and liberal oppositions, and thus present the united front to the enemy. What had to be ascertained was the conditions which would be necessary to enable such a united government to befall, and to this question I devoted myself with the assistance of some of my colleagues yesterday afternoon...”
Pitching in, Isidore looked between his friends with a scrunched up nose. “What’s he on about?” he asked.
“Shut up, Kaplan!” Maxence hissed with much less grace than he offered Lionel. They seemed to all be catching their breath suddenly as the monologue continued, bewildered enough to find an eave in their worries albeit briefly.
“... it was apparent that the essential unity could be secured under another Prime Minister, though not under myself, in those circumstances my duty was played. I sought an audience of the King this evening and tended to him my resignation, which His Majesty has been pleased to accept. His Majesty has now entrusted my friend and colleague Mr. Winston Churchill the task of forming a new administration on a national basis, and in this task I have no doubt he will be successful.”
Lionel and Maxence were the first to make eye contact, as Maxence had lowered himself onto his elbows, forearms flat on the table beneath them while they listened. Their widened blue and green eyes mirrored one another with each spoken word. Isidore was still perplexed by the speech being delivered as his head cocked sideways and his brows knitted closely together.
“Perhaps you remember that in my broadcast of September the 3rd of last year, I told you that we should be fighting against evil things. My words have proved to be insufficient to describe the vileness of those who have now staked everything on the great battle just beginning. Perhaps it may at least be sobering to know that this battle, though it may last for days or even weeks, has ended the period of waiting and uncertainty. For the hour has come for we are to be put to the test as the innocent people of Belgium and Holland and France are being tested already, and you and I must rally behind our new leader and with our united shake and our unshakeable courage, fight and work until—”
The speech concluded by Madame Rousseau confiscating the radio, although she was met by no resistance from any of the boys who gathered around it. The fair-haired woman glanced warily between all of them.
“That’s enough of that. No more radio for any one of you, and I mean any one,” Madame Rousseau affirmed as she clutched the radio close to her chest. “Mercer, St. Pierre, to your dormitory. Kaplan, I believe you have a place on the football pitch to fill this afternoon.” she instructed.
“Is it safe to go outside?” Isidore asked without pause. “They’ve just said the Boche have invaded—”
Madame Rousseau ushered them all along. “It’s perfectly safe until we say otherwise. You lot mustn’t concern yourselves with the troubles of adults, you have plenty to worry about in a realm of your own.”
If Lionel were to have spoken up then, if fear hadn’t paralyzed his tongue, he would’ve said how they didn’t have a realm of their own — they were on the cusp of adulthood and therefore they should’ve been privy to adult issues, especially when they were on everyone’s doorstep.
He didn’t say anything, however. He allowed for Maxence to lead the way out of the grand study hall while Isidore parted with Madame Rousseau, an assumed escort to the football pitch.
Later on, in the quietude of twilight inside Lionel and Maxence’s dorm, they lay side by side underneath the duvet of Maxence’s twin-sized bed. None of their instructors had caught onto their relations, and it’s what Lionel often collated to an epic Shakespeare play or a Tchaikovsky composition. Sometimes, in the lull between passion, he would hum Winter Daydreams, which would bring out a string of giggles in his roommate.
He was silent that early morning. He couldn’t stop replaying Chamberlain’s words in his mind. For the hour has come for we are to be put to the test as the innocent people of Belgium and Holland and France are being tested already. As it caught his eye, he reached up and made a fist around Maxence’s Star of David necklace. He hadn’t actively practiced in what felt like years, minus holiday celebrations that felt more secular than ever as he’d only ever looked forward to them for the food and presents, but it was a comfort nonetheless.
Maxence noticed this and sat up on one elbow. “Praying?” he asked, not accusatory or mocking.
“Isn’t that what you’re meant to do in times like these?” Lionel returned as he glanced up at his dark-haired roommate. He tried to focus on lesser things in the moment; like how Maxence could stand for a haircut, his brown locks overgrown and with charming curled ends just past his jawline, however Lionel didn’t think he could bear to see anything else change.
“I reckon so.” Maxence said.
“I think you and I have different beliefs on what’s holy enough to pray to,” Lionel said, a suggestive lilt in his voice as he brought one arm over Maxence and placed it against the pillow he was laying on. “You’re quite sacred yourself.”
Maxence raised both eyebrows without a change in expression. “Am I? Who says?”
“I do. I ordain you as a holy entity, and therefore I swear my fealty to you from this day until my last,” Lionel answered, grinning crookedly down at Maxence, who reached up and ghosted his fingertips over the other’s upper arm.
“And what makes me so worthy of such consecration?” Maxence wondered although still his expression did not shift to match his teasing inflection.
“Well, your unyielding yet somber confidence... which affects your transcendent presence, of course. You’re infinitely good and unquestionably powerful at turning me to jelly every time you acknowledge my existence.” Lionel said. An immediate reply wasn’t given, Maxence too transfixed with the state of Lionel’s bramble of curls and wrapping them around his forefinger gently. “... You’re always so composed, in control. It’s calming, really. Whenever something goes awry I either feel struck or overwhelmingly compelled to throw a Molotov cocktail into Madame Allard’s quarters.”
“Specific sort of compulsion,” Maxence murmured, distracted by Lionel’s skin against his own.
“Most things that have gone awry happened at her hand until now.” Lionel replied with a shrug, chuckling quietly as Maxence let out a muffled laugh.
Silence blanketed the room for an undetermined amount of time as their restlessness eventually culminated in languid kissing. Both of them had learned early on in their embarkment with one another that they were astutely talented at defying time at all costs, and so it became irrelevant whenever they were alone. Little victories.
Maxence reached for Lionel’s clasped hand as they were kissing, waiting until the smaller boy was occupied to make a move for it. Tentatively he pulled each finger from its iron tight grip on the star-shaped pendant until it lay flat against his chest once more.
“Let’s save our prayers for when the war’s in our realm,” Lionel suggested at the gesture, echoing Madame Rousseau although he did not agree.
“I thought you were just praying to me?” Maxence jested. “Quite earnestly, if I may add.”
“Your lips are not an altar.” he protested.
Maxence found himself smiling halfheartedly at Lionel. “And what would be an appropriate altar for my religion?”
“One of your jumpers.” Lionel answered without pause.
“You know that wouldn’t work,” Maxence said, smile faltering. “Your shoulders aren’t as broad as mine. You have an entirely different build than I do, at that. And the others would—”
“Think we exchange clothes like any roommates are bound to do anyway. Besides, I’d like it if your jumper was big on me. It’d feel like you were hanging onto me all day.”
Maxence couldn’t resist rolling his eyes. What a ridiculous boy he’d fallen for. “And you say I’m the hopeless romantic. I’m not the one mantling you as a godhead and whispering such sweet nothings.”
“No, you just snog me in custodial closets and pass me unsavory notes during class.” Lionel said.
“Unsavory isn’t even the right word. You mean evocative or something.” Maxence said with a chuckle.
“Unsavory in the eyes of the others.”
The dark haired boy released a sigh, nodding in surrender as he pushed Lionel onto his back and rolled halfway onto his torso. “Alright, alright. You can have one of my jumpers. Only so you’ll have something to remember me by when we’re overrun by Jerries and forced to eat sauerkraut for every meal and you must suspend your not-so-private belief in me to worship our glorious Führer.” he said sarcastically.
Lionel brought a tender hand through Maxence’s hair. “I want the green cable-knit one.” he said.
“That’s my favorite,” Maxence whined in response.
“Exactly. Which means it’s the closest to you I can get without you in my arms.”
Maxence let all his limbs lose all resistance, resting against Lionel with a newfound gravity. Silence washed over them once more, although this time they could feel the veil between them and the outside world thinning rapidly as the dawn arrived. And with dawn came clarity, and with clarity broke the spell that they found themselves under as soon as they were in close proximity without any interference.
“My brother is an army medic.” Lionel mumbled against Maxence’s skin, which had only just begun cooling, although he must admit that he preferred it flushed and perspiring. “He’ll want me gone, because he’s seen things I haven’t and he knows things I don’t. Père and Maman too. I’m afraid I won’t even get to see the war at all. That I won’t get the chance to fight for them. You.”
Maxence’s breaths came evenly. “No matter where this takes us, I believe you’ll make a difference. That’s what I have faith in, Ellie.”
𝟑𝐫𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞, 𝟏𝟗𝟒𝟎
Luxembourg fell the next day. Then Antwerp, then Amiens, then Abbeville, then Calais, then Belgium altogether. Over a quarter of a million men retreated to the beaches of Dunkirk on the northern shores, continuing to face ferocious bombardment by the Luftwaffe. The war was well within their realm now.
All radios had been confiscated except for a kid named Brisbois from Year 9. He traded it for twenty francs during their final dinner together as a school. That was the only avenue of information that came from the outside to the student body, as all other means of communication had been blocked by the administration. Wouldn’t want to scare the children, after all.
Louis-Le-Grand’s doors had been unopened since the middle of May. Not even the instructors came and went anymore. Everyone was barred inside the building, all the instructors in their offices writing letters to parents, all the students locked inside their dorms, as they awaited an attempted siege on the city.
Inside their dorm, Lionel and Maxence were of great comfort to one another, even if they were only sitting at their windowsill and watching the lights of the  Panthéon go out one by one from between the ancient columns. It was harrowing, witnessing the hibernation of a people that hadn’t slept for decades, and neither of them had much to say about it in the end.
It wasn’t until they heard two quick raps on their door in the middle of the morning that they were whisked out of their quiet dissonance. They didn’t even have time to react before Headmaster Desrosiers entered the room — accompanied by a familiar face dressed in an army uniform.
“Monsieur Mercer, your brother is here for you.” Headmaster Desrosiers informed him as if George, decorated in his badges and insignia, being in the doorway wasn’t enough of a reveal.
From his own bed, Maxence sat up on his palms and looked across the room to Lionel, whose eyes were the size of saucers and whose mouth was slightly ajar. What on God’s green earth was his older brother doing at his school when he was meant to be out by some German front line?
As soon as Lionel had both feet on the floor, George advanced toward him and placed his hands on the sides of his arms. For a fleeting moment, Lionel thought they might have embraced, but alas. He stared up at his older brother in pure fascination and horror.
“I’m getting you out of Paris,” George began, shaking his head whenever Lionel attempted a response. “There’s no negotiations. You’ll go with Rosie and Maia. Now. You can’t pack much, I brought you a MOLLE.” he continued as he shrugged off a backpack and shoved it into his younger brother’s arms.
Lionel swallowed dryly as he clutched the backpack with his hands, looking over his shoulder momentarily to gauge Maxence’s reaction. This was exactly as he feared, except he never thought it would ever come to fruition.
“We don’t have any time. Get it packed. Now.” George demanded, their shared blue eyes remaining locked for a second longer before Lionel finally relented and turned around, lunging for his and Maxence’s armoire.
He could only fit three sweaters, one of which was Maxence’s green cable-knit, two undershirts, one pair of pants and his track shoes before George was barking out orders like some sort of general. He threw the backpack over his shoulder and followed as if he were a ragdoll in his brother’s iron tight grasp, feeling something enter his left pocket as he was withdrawn from the room. Confusion riddling his mind and rendering him speechless, Lionel couldn’t do anything but continuously glance over his shoulder to where the Headmaster and his roommate were standing in their dorm doorway.
This was it. The last time he would ever see his best friend. The first person he ever truly, completely, uselessly loved.
“Why — why me? Why not... Evacuate the city?” Lionel sputtered out as they began cutting through the dining hall. He knew this route. It was a short cut toward a back alley.
George’s pace was difficult to match, but Lionel managed as he was given an answer. “Because it’s too late for the rest of them. The Germans are coming in from the east, they’ll be in the streets by late afternoon if not sooner.”
“They... They’ll be in the streets?” Lionel echoed in a smaller voice. He shouldn’t have turned off the radio early last night. Maxence had begun complaining of the unending nihilism and dread that plagued their dorm. “Then — then I want to stay. I can’t go. This is... This is my city, my home, I have friends here and school. I have to protect—”
“You’re sixteen, there’s nothing you can protect here,” George interrupted sourly as they pushed through an exit in the kitchens. The back alley was poorly lit from the overcast of consistent thunderstorms and smelled dank. “I’m putting you, Rosie, and Maia on a boat and getting you all the hell out of France.”
Lionel felt his heart sink and melt inside his stomach. “The Boche are all over the coast, we can’t go across the Channel—”
“You aren’t going across the fucking Channel. You’re going across the Atlantic,” George said as he dragged his brother out of the back alley and checked the surrounding perimeter before bringing him into the muted daylight.
“... America?” Lionel asked in almost a whisper. “How?”
“I know a small convoy going through Tours to La Rochelle. I’ve had Rosie and Maia in Hôtel de Vendôme for a week, they’re already on one. All that’s left is you,” George said as they walked quickly throughout the deserted streets of Paris.
The younger boy shook his head in puzzlement. “A-And they’ll take civilians? What about Père and Maman?”
“Père and Maman are at home.” George deadpanned.
“They are still at risk! You have to — save them too! You must—”
“Lionel! Keep your fucking voice down!” he hissed as he tightened his grip on Lionel’s small wrist, likely cutting off circulation. “They’ll be alright. They have me here, and I’ll be the one of the lead doctors keeping the soldiers who are fighting for this city’s freedom alive.”
The younger brother’s mouth pressed into a thin line as he realized this absolute truth. However, he couldn’t dampen the embers that flickered from deep within his chest, licking at his ribcage and leaving him crawling in his own skin. The closer they approached the outskirts of the city, the larger the flame grew inside his bones.
As they bypassed the bridge and began trekking beneath it, Lionel tore his arm away from his brother’s hold.
“I can’t be a coward,” Lionel insisted loudly as he scurried backwards, his shoes slickened with mud while crawling out of the ditch that led to the shallow river. “I have to stay here! When I’m old enough, I can enlist and fight with you! Until then I can be of help to my classmates and my instructors!”
“Lionel, get down here! This isn’t a game!” George yelled in return. He was suddenly uncaring of his personal volume as he lunged for Lionel’s wrist, which was narrowly missed as the younger brother ducked out of his vantage point. “Every second the Germans are closing in on—”
Interrupting George was a deafening explosion, the intense rumbling of which tripped Lionel onto his back and sent him sliding down the ditch and toward the river. Before his older brother could fasten his fist around his collar, another explosion struck the neighboring arrondissement and rendered them both limp for another few seconds as they reacquainted to unmoving ground.
George pushed aside his urges to admonish Lionel, none as overwhelming as the instinct to deliver him to the convoy and himself back to his own men. He heaved his younger brother across the river, ignoring his incompetent upper body strength and powering through the searing burn that traveled across his shoulders and back. He hadn’t endured such a test of his true abilities since basic, and even then he forfeited a battle raiment for rubber gloves and tourniquets. Regardless he forgot all preconceived notions he had of himself and yanked Lionel out of the river, both of them soaking wet but not yet entirely discouraged as they made their way into the 14th arrondissement.
“The convoy’s stationed in Montrouge!” George shouted over the echoing explosion that Lionel was irrationally picturing having taken place in the Cour d'Honneur at Louis-Le-Grand, where he, Maxence and Isidore would choose to study during springs much like these when the cherry blossoms were in full bloom and would rain upon them and their schoolbooks. He imagined these cherry bottoms blown to smithereens, left blackened and smoldering husks, all the windows of the courtyard shattered, his classmates petrified as the enemy invaded their hallways. In the inky blackness behind his eyes, he saw Maxence taking shelter in that custodial closet underneath the west wing staircase — the place they would most often escape to during study hall. Where they shared their first kiss while all the bleach fumigated them.
God, he didn’t want to leave.
The bombing continued; an onslaught, a massacre, at least in Lionel’s mind, previously unburdened by war. How could chaos reign for so long? It felt like ages until George pointed out a quaint line up of military vehicles on Rue Gabriel Péri. As they rapidly approached the street, Lionel glanced over his shoulder and noted a confectionary without a closed sign in its window. He wondered if they were still in there somehow, if they’d bum him and his brother a couple pralines for all their trouble.
Rosalie’s sun-kissed, fresh face came into view, and in her lap was her nearly identical one year old daughter, wrapped in a blanket that he assumed the other soldiers lent her. Good men. If Lionel turned around right now and sprinted back to Louis-Le-Grand, he thought he could entrust them with his sister-in-law and niece’s safety.
“Get in,” George commanded as they skidded to a halt at the back of one of the vehicles, lifting Lionel up by his armpits and allowing another soldier to pull him all the way into the rig. “Oh, my Rosie, how is my belle? Keep her ears covered.” he pleaded with his wife, who was overcome by sorrow herself as she leaned down and placed a kiss on her husband’s chapped lips.
“I want you with us, George.” Rosalie begged helplessly, although there were no visible tears in her eyes. Lionel always admired that about her. He absolutely never saw her cry.
George shook his head while petting her hair, bringing his calloused fingertips through her silky brown locks. The curls reminded Lionel of Maxence. His heart twisted and he reached up instinctively, grabbing the left quadrant of his chest.
“Ellie will keep you both safe,” George said promisingly as he looked over to his brother. “You’ll keep them safe. That’s what you’ll do. You’ll protect them. Say it back to me. You’ll protect them. Say it to me!”
Another explosion shook the convoy, causing the entire company to flinch and the engines to begin revving. “I’ll — I’ll protect them.” Lionel repeated. “I’ll protect them.”
Hopping off the back of the vehicle with extreme hesitance, George backed away slowly as he watched the convoy take their leave. He forced himself around and gazed out at the city he was due to aid, his eyes trailing upward, following the black, billowing smoke that polluted the grey sky, and inhaled one last sharp breath of fresh air while starting his return march.
Rosalie looked across to Lionel, who was blank-faced once it was all over. She reached out and held tightly his clammy, tremoring hand, clutching Maia close with her other arm.
Whenever they breached the city limits and charted a course to Chartres, rain pouring on them and thunder just barely masking the sounds of explosions in the distance, Lionel felt a distinct pull toward his left pocket.
He tucked one hand inside and fished around until unearthing a shimmering Star of David necklace.

A selection of 118 potential french names for the Spy, handpicked by your local french boy
So, yeah, It’s kinda hard picking a name in another language, and even name lists are sometimes a little off.
Of course, those are not all the french names that were used around 1970 (I’m not even sure for some of them), but they are either french, either used in france, and rather old-sounding, since I excluded any modern names.
I bolded my personnal favorites! If you’re a fellow french person and wanna add something or tell me a name is wrong, go ahead!

“La Captures Des Frères Isidore,” La Patrie. November 14, 1917. Page 03.

“L’EVASION DES FRERES ISIDORE,” La Patrie. October 31, 1917. Page 03.
