...OR you could get LibreOffice for free, learn it from what isn't even the scratch (practically everything is the same but the loadout) and enjoy the fruits of labor given willingfully to and from the community of cool IT people with the hobby of making the internet a better place in their free time!
if you're subscribed to Microsoft word, you probably received an email recently saying they're upping their prices. Like, a lot. ($9.99/month instead of $6.99)
guess what though? you can log into your account, click Cancel Subscription, and get the option to continue your subscription at the same price WITHOUT their bullshit AI.
That's right, the new, higher price is actually a different subscription that includes AI that everyone is being opted into by force! What a cool and fun product that clearly everyone wants.
you can also choose to buy Word 2024 without AI for a single lump sum that will be yours in perpetuity, with no updates, for one computer.
Check your subscription if you need Word for work! Don't get duped into paying for something you might not even want

months ago i amazed many by saying i liked windows 11 (within an hour of installing it)
i still like it, mostly. however, of course:
here are the things i do not like about windows 11, as promised.
-yeah, a lot of right click options are under "show more options" now, requiring you to click through for a lot of stuff. extra clicks. annoying. -the window snapping to edges uh, hitbox, is bigger now and it's kind of annoying. sometimes yes, i really do just wanna put a window kinda in the corner but not have it take up a predetermined amount of screen. takes some nudging -sometimes streaming on discord does not do audio?? i dont get it but it works sometimes. i also use eartrumpet so this could be on me somehow lol -sometimes i have a hard time finding old settings. it seems like moving things over from the old settings/control panel style is a work in progress and happening slowly - so not everything's migrated yet. idk if it all will. but it can just be tricky finding stuff. it's THERE, somewhere, but it's harder to find than it should be probably -taskbar can't be moved. i do not like that. it's fine but i just used to always have my taskbar either on the top of my screen or on the left. i'm used to it now. -the widgets box could be so fuckin cool. but they force you to have a bunch of awful news stuff and i can't seem to figure out how to either get rid of it entirely, or make sure it doesn't show me stuff that'll make me rage. so i never use it, despite a lotta useful stuff.
here are some things i am loving about windows 11 tho, because i am sticking with it lol
-rounded corners. they just make me happy. -centered taskbar. hell yeah. -phone link is massively improved. i can text and call my mom from my computer now. nice. -quick settings. this is in windows 10 but it always felt kinda pointless. here it has a lot of little settings, and you can do a lot without having to leave the box finally. yay. -window organization/snapping - yes i bitched about this. however, built in are some grids that help for some quick organization in a really nice way that you could only do while running power toys. i admittedly still use it
BEST THING ABOUT WINDOWS 11 THAT PC ARTISTS WILL UNDERSTAND: it remembers window/monitor locations. so if you disconnect your cintiq with clip studio open, even though it bumps it to your main monitor... IT GOES BACK WHEN YOU PLUG YOUR CINTIQ BACK IN. it actually remembers which monitor a program was on in different settings (extend, pc screen only, duplicate, etc). fuckinggg finally. so good.
anyway
i'm sure i will hate the things i love and love the things i hate and learn how to do things or windows will update them out. i'm here for it.
SHRUG!!! it feels modern finally and not like, an attempt to be modern. so that's cool. it'll get there eventually i hope, or ai will take it over in a horrific manner. we'll see.
(note to linux people: do not tell me to use linux i will go into a rage) (note to mac people: do not tell me to switch to a mac unless you're buying me a new mac)

still sort of thinking about something that happened yesterday.
which makes me think; why do I waffle decision making? why can't I stick to one thing or the other?
this was in regards to me wondering if I should either cook and munch on the ham that's in my sibling's freezer, or the lunch meat that's in their fridge.
short answer, no I did not. I did not eat the thing, as it is meat.
also still no pepperoni pizza any more as it has had pepperoni on it and that's the only one they get.
why can't i hold firm with my decisions?? why do I waffle back and forth??
in this one instance I'll waffle back and forth; and if I do in fact eat meat, then I'll immediately feel like a failure because I did. because I didn't stick to my resolve.
I've made the jump from windows to linux perfectly fine and don't want to go back.
that I'm certain.
why in the world do I waffle back and forth with decision making?
mom says it's because at one point I started questioning everything I do and never stopped. idk how. idk why. idr at all when that even started and I became much less certain of everything...
In regards to vegetarianism; I've been vegetarian for idk how long. since I've started using the new "animal food" tracker that I use, it's been 70 days. and before with the other app I was using to track my meat and animal food intake, it was over 100 days.
that's 170 days at least~~~
I shouldn't waffle in this decision anymore and stay firm on it~~!! I've came way too far to start doing that now~~!!
as opposed to my sibling's mentalities (for some reason) as; vegetarianism or veganism is, if you like it, eat it.
yeah. I shouldn't even thought of eating meat from their freezer/fridge. because they were killed just because we like the way they taste.... I'm morally opposed to this. I'm morally opposed to slaughter and death as a whole. violence or war counts towards this. even violence in self defense....
I'm firm in my resolve for pacifism; why am I not the same way with vegetarianism?? I need to be.
why I got like this doesn't matter. I need to hold firm in my resolve both for nonviolence and vegetarianism, regardless of what people say.
maybe if I bring vegetarianism up; or the morals and ethics of it, to my sibling, and we debate about it... maybe that makes me second guess myself. but it shouldn't... they're probably mad because the cognitive dissonance and know that vegetarianism or better yet, veganism is much better for the environment, the planet, the people in it, as opposed to killing animals for food.
it has much less of a carbon footprint and does much less damage to the environment, than eating meat.
and I shouldn't eat fish either; as it's technically meat. and over fishing the oceans and things is a problem.
was still thinking about a conversation with my mom that I had yesterday. as to why I keep waffling in my decision making. it was mainly about vegetarianism. she's been supportive and buying me vegetarian/vegan stuff to try to help me. I've come so far~~~ don't give up~~!!
besides if I did give up; then start back up again, I'd take it to heart, get it so far into my head.... that I'd begin deeming myself a failure. I'm not a failure.....
I take things way too personally, to heart too much, let things other people say bug me too much... and let them sway my opinions on things instead of making up my own mind and sticking with my own views.
I need to be comfortable with my own decisions, act accordingly, and not be bothered by others thoughts, feelings, or opinions....
I can make my own decisions; I'm good at making my own decisions.
I'm not a failure if I happen to make a bad one.
but in that regard about eating meat, it would make me a hypocrite.
I'm not a hypocrite~~ Or I try not to be as much as possible~~

donatello x reader (fluff?) - random headcannons
this list has been piling up, these are more general
No matter how much y'all say it, I don't think his love language would be physical touch. Donnie seems too awkward to return hugs or kisses, but nonetheless still notices/appreciates them when you do it. Instead, I feel like he'd opt for acts of service instead. Like, fixing your glasses, showing you cool features on your laptop, creating a custom chat interface for you two.
He lets you borrow that purple hoodie
You hear "Erm akshually-" alot lmaooooo ; he often infodumps the most random shit to you, you've become accustomed to listening to him.
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if he's slightly into LOA stuff (Law of Attraction). It's canon that he listens to positive self-affirmations while he sleeps, so maybe that's a thing for him idk
Steals your eyebrow pencil to fill in his brows for the day. It'd be cool to see him into makeup.
Plays SO MANY games holy shit, has tried everything on Steam.
Obviously he has Discord, no questions asked. Organizes his servers into neat, purple folders. He only uses dark mode, he hisses if he ever sees light mode. Also knows how to make and works servers very well; likes making embeds and such for fun.
^^ On top of this, he probably has a lot of online friends; he doesn't need to show his face or reveal his identity. I see him staying up really late, playing random games at 2 AM on a Discord call.
Very very techy; uses Linux, built his own PC, set up the lair's wifi router too. The brothers come to him all the time for help on their tech fixes, mainly on Nintendo Switch.
My boy is CHRONICALLY ONLINE, he definitely knows all those niche internet songs. He gives me weird kid vibes, like The Living Tombstone, Rat by Penelope Scott, dare I say a little bit of Miku?
He knows the FNAF lore
Secretly shops at Hot Topic from time to time. I'm seeing graphic tees, maybe a studded bracelet? He walks in and the employees are like, "Dude, nice cosplay."
CAFFEINE! Mostly relies on coffee, doesn't like Starbucks that much, and he has tried Monster before. Monster is like a last resort for him, like he's working on a project he MUST finish for his sanity.
Also, I feel like he has fucked up teeth idk. Like, how the hell would Splinter be able to afford dental care for not one, but four teens? Braces too, not only are they expensive, but inaccessible to mutants.
He needs glasses, just often refuses to wear them
Never, ever truly gets angry or mad. But when he does, its rare and it's kinda scary ngl

just a heads up that you don't need to know anything about software to use linux! operating systems like ubuntu are extremely user-friendly and actually look very similar to MacOS (which was based on unix, like linux). you have icons to click on for all your software/programs just like on Windows or Mac. making the switch is very easy and worth it!
Thanks anon! I actually mean stuff like using microsoft products which I need in my career or things that are probably only compatible with microsoft/mac (specific programs I use to manage lab data) and also playing videogames that are for Windows (and I know there's ways to do it but I don't know how to do it safely). I would like to do that thing in which you have two operating systems and can choose between them but I just have a laptop and idk how to or if I can do that on there without being left with barely any storage. So it's not that I don't know enough about computers in general to know how to use linux, it's that I don't know enough to make linux work in the way I'd like and need it to. (Also, I have never willingly used mac and it is quite unintuitive to me so that's actually not a point for linux)

Likes Audrey Hepburn
And Steinbeck

idk I’ve been using computers since I was a toddler so
-windows 95. It had a little trumpet fanfare when you booted up. there was a cool gingham effect I could do in MS Paint which I suspect was a result of the low bit color graphics. but I couldn’t read at the time so I’ll never actually know unless there’s a Windows 95 MS Paint enthusiast in the audience
-Windows 98 I don’t think I ever used windows 98 all that much. Me and my brother had a windows 98 machine in the dining room which had adobe flash on it, we rarely used it. We prefered to use my mom’s computer (windows 2000) or my brother’s computer (a little bit of windows for the instant messaging but mostly linux)
-Windows 2000 it was easy to connect to the internet on this one so it was a fan favorite. garnered quite a bit of end user loyalty.
-windows xp. Some frustration from windows power users but still generated a fair bit of average end user loyalty
-windows vista. The OS that killed a bunch of xbox 360s. Unremarkable and generated no loyalty for the average end user and made anyone who had to use a computer for more than an hour every day Extremely Frustrated.
-windows 7. People like windows 7. It had some weird, somewhat intrusive features. They were easy enough to ignore and work around for stubborn power users and also an experimental kick off for some of the more modern features of windows software that can be useful for trained users.
windows 8. fucking awful. disgusting. constantly telling you to close your tabs to “save memory” when computers always run at 80-90% memory anyway because that’s how physics works.
You HAD to use random ass things as apps. If you tried to run netflix in your browser it WOULD NOT LET YOU WATCH NETFLIX IN YOUR BROWSER. THERE WAS NO “continue in browser anyway” OPTION. AND WHEN YOU WATCHED SOMETHING ON NETFLIX< IT WOULD NOT LET YOU TAB OUT AND JUST LISTEN TO IT. NO IT WOULD PAUSE THE VIDEO AUTOMATICALLY ANDIT WOULD NOT LET YOU TURN THAT FEATURE OFF IF YOU HAD SKYPE ON IN THE BACKGROUND TO RECIEVE MESSAGES WHILE YOU DID SOMETHING ELSE, IT WOULD LOG YOU OFF SKYPE UNLESS IT WAS THE ACTIVE WINDOW!! BUT IT WOULD KEEP IT RUNNING AND EATING RESOURCES ANYWAY. LIKE WHY. WHY RUN IT BUT NOT LET ME RECIeVE MESSAGES
WHAT IS THE FUCKING POINT OF SELLING YOUR OS ON ITS “windowed” FEATURES IF YOU DON”T EVEN LET THEM UTILIZE THE FUCKING WINDOWS FEATURES!!!!!
yeah I didn’t even last 2 weeks on windows 8 before deciding I’d rather just have a constantly resetting illegitimate copy of windows 7. Even with the skin that fixed the start menu, the stuff I mentioned above and probably more I could just not cope with. It went against everything I expect and want from a PC.
-windows 8.1 never used it. people claim it fixed “some of the issues” but I was still too angry to give up my windows 7 pacifier.
-I’m pretty happy with windows 10 so far, you just have to turn off some of the more intrusive features in task manager and services. And turn off the handwriting features if you’re using a graphics tablet for drawing.
Also I am not in cool leg unfortunately

a list of asks
@padawanyugi tagged me in this, but Tumblr decided to eat any notification that I got tagged, so I’m glad I saw it on my dash because I like filling these things out. Thanks for tagging me! I may have typed A Lot.
Favorites: What types of books do you enjoy? Tell about what you’ve read recently (Or maybe about a book you hated recently!)I like spec-fic and sci-fi, although less “hard” science fiction, and I also enjoy fantasy. I read a lot of YA even though I’m in my 30s just because it seems easy to find a story I want to read and I’m not usually in the mood for dense prose.
I’ve been rereading the Wheel of Time series since it’s getting an Amazon TV show; it was my first non-LOTR fantasy series and I love it to death, warts and all, although I love joking about the weak points with other people who’ve read it. I think the last other thing I read was A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, which was a queer YA historical fiction, and it was a lot of fun. I wish I’d had access to all these queer stories when I was an actual teenager, but better late than never.
What types of music do you like to listen to? Share five songs from your music library. I really do like a bit of everything, although I gravitate towards certain genres more often depending on the season or time of day, so I’m going to cheat and pick 5 per season. Summer for me is lots of peppy pop (pride playlists!), punk and rock and punk-adjacent stuff, just upbeat stuff in general. -Weekender, by The Royal They -Break My Heart, by Dua Lipa -Toutes les femmes savent danser, by Loud -Ruby Soho, by Rancid -Womanarchist, by Bad Cop, Bad Cop
In the fall, my inner goth kid craves darkwave, goth rock, dramatic folk, roots rock, and also anything that reminds me of Halloween. -Iuka, by the Secret Sisters -Bela Lugosi’s Dead, by Bauhaus -How’s It Gonna End, by Tom Waits -Under the Milky Way, by The Church -I Put a Spell on You, by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins I could go on about the Christmas music I like at length (Boney M’s Christmas album slaps, ngl) but I’ll just skip that and say that I listen to more classical and piano pieces in the winter. I’m terrible at remembering names, so artists only: -Ludovico Einaudi -Chopin -Debussy -Saint-Saëns -Dvořák And in spring I’m usually just depressed af and listen to whatever. -FML, by K.Flay -Weird Part of the Night, by Louis Cole -Juodaan Viinaa, by Korpiklaani -P.O.H.U.I., by Carla’s Dreams -Marryuna, by Baker Boy
Do you have a show or movie that you can just put on anytime and it’s your comfort? Definitely Star Trek. I’ve rewatched the various iterations (except TOS) so many times. Also Mean Girls and Bring It On, idk why.
Do you have a favorite dessert? Tiramisu or creme brulée! Or macarons. I don’t eat dessert really unless I’m at a restaurant.
Do you have a favorite cold drink? Sparkling water, hands down.
Do you have a favorite game? The hours I have put into the SIms in my lifetime is probably shameful, although I haven’t played in a while. Don’t Starve is another contender for hours played, but I am also really fond everything by Amanita Design
Do you have a favorite part of your self care/beauty/health routine? I haven’t been doing it much lately since I’ve been dealing with some uncertain health issues with my joints (actually have a rheumatologist appointment later today), but savasana after a long yoga workout is borderline ecstasy.
Do you have a favorite type of take-out food? Indian for sure.
What’s your favorite type of exercise/physical activity? I have a love-hate relationship with running. I don’t actually love it but I love how I feel after. I really enjoy yoga. I love playing in the water at the beach, bodyboarding and swimming.
Pick between: (you choose the context)
Cook or bake? (I love cooking A Lot)
Space or ocean? (Hard to pick, but I grew up by the ocean and it’s 100% my happy place)
Chocolate or vanilla?
City or suburb or rural? (I grew up in an isolated rural village and I miss the quiet and the slower pace of life, but I do not miss the lack of amenities and opportunities, or the smalltown gossip. I also don’t drive bc of epilepsy, so I’m fucked as far as transport in rural settings.)
Past or future?
Shower in the morning or evening?
Mac/Apple or PC/Android? (Linux in general!)
Sing or dance?  (I don’t have an amazing voice but I can carry a tune without it being painful, and I love singing along with songs.)
Get up early or sleep in? (I actually love sleeping in but with two kids, early morning is my only time to myself, so I wake up before 6 most days AGGH.)
Shoes, socks, or bare feet? (Hate socks. I’m barefoot at home all year round.)
Marker, crayon, or pencil? Pen!
Tea, coffee, or hot chocolate? (Coffee in the morning, tea later on.)
Random questions:
Have you ever had any pets? (Had dogs and a cat as a kid, and as an adult I’ve had betta fish and cats, and I have a cat currently.)
What is your academic background/job field? I did my undergrad in linguistics, and I am currently a stay-at-home dad lol. I do freelance editing and transcription on the side. I don’t think I’ll ever work in my field bc I really don’t have the energy to go to grad school.
What’s something random that you’re into (even if you aren’t good at it)? I signed up for a Cape Breton step dancing class in university and I loved it.
Are you good at putting away your clean laundry right away? It depends on the day, but generally yes. Mine and everyone else’s. When I lived alone? Absolutely not.
What’s one of your pet peeves? Someone trying to have a conversation with me when they have the radio or TV on. I can’t follow what you’re saying if someone else is speaking! I hate having that stuff on as background noise in general.
What’s something you’re pretty good at? I’m a great cook.
What’s the most recent nice thing you bought for yourself? A new conditioner ig? lol
Can you sew? I can mend a small tear or sew on a button, but it’s been years since I did more than that.
What’s a chore you hate (or a chore you enjoy)? I hate vacuuming so much. So much. Maybe if I had a better vaccuum cleaner I wouldn’t mind it, but I just feel like I’m fighting with the stupid thing, getting caught up on its own cords, caught on furniture, can’t quiiiite reach a spot... HATE IT. I like shoveling snow sometimes, though.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself. I am 20 years older than my youngest sibling, and five minutes younger than my “oldest” sibling.
Never have I ever... Gone fishing, even though I’m from a fishing community.
What extracurriculars did/do you do in school? In high school, I played trumpet in band until the band got dissolved from lack of funding. I played soccer one year, was in a play another year. We had an art club for like a semester that I was in. In university the first time round, I did step dancing and intramural hide and seek  Second time around, I was in the linguistics club to help with assignments. (We were very much encouraged to work in pairs or groups for a lot of different classes. The only thing was that you did need to list your group members on the assignment so the prof knew who you worked with. My first morphology class in particular, we had a whole homework club where a huge portion of the class got together to work through assignments and help each other understand, and the prof would quite often show up. </tangent>
Deeper questions:
How’s your quarantine/last few months been? The cabin fever was really bad before the weather warmed up. I struggle with seasonal depression every spring, and it’s gotten much worse since we moved to Edmonton because of how long the winters are. (Snow from September to May/June? Fucccck.) It’s frankly horrifying to look at what’s going on in the US, but even though we have far fewer cases here, I’m really anxious that we’ll see another wave soon. Otherwise, I think I’ve adjusted. Home-schooling, hand-sanitizing, social distancing, masks...All feels kind of normal now, which should maybe concern me.
What do you think of human nature/society/etc.? I am like the least philosophical person you will meet so I don’t think I really have many thoughts.
What’s something you are insecure about? Writing my L2 if a native speaker is gonna read it.
What do you think is the meaning of life/reason that humans exist in the universe? I don’t think there is one, and that doesn’t bother me.
Do you think you’re better (whatever that means to you) than you used to be? Definitely. My adolescence and early adulthood was rough. I was dealing with a lot of trauma, untreated bipolar disorder, and I self-harmed for a very long time. I could not imagine making it to 30, let alone being stable and happy. I actively avoided thinking about the future because it made me spiral. But I was lucky enough to get help, consistent help from a doctor I clicked with, and it made a world of difference. I think younger me would be disappointed at how mundane my life is, but I’m thrilled to be boring because boring means no life-upending mood episodes. I have a happy partnership and two delightful kids and I couldn’t ask for more.
What are your thoughts on religion? I’m not religious and my own experience being raised in the Catholic church was frankly traumatic, but I know that it’s a source of comfort and community for many others and I think that’s awesome for them.
Do you think that there are aliens out there? I think so, although I think that we may not even know what other kinds of life to look for and may not recognize it even if we find it.
What’s something that’s been on your mind recently? We’re moving cross-country in less than a month (driving, no less, nearly 5000 km) and I still have so much to do to get ready aosjdoajdoasijdoaijsd

Winston Programming Headcanons
hi I’m here to dump WAY too many headcanons for how Winston works. please talk to me about them. i beg of u guys,,,,
he's one of those people on stack overflow who marks your question as duplicate, closes it, and links you to another post that doesn't answer your question. and it's instantaneous because he has a Fuckload of points on that hellhole site.
he likes Matlab :/
but he also definitely is in the arrays begin at 0 camp like any sane person is
he's on the spaces side for tabs vs spaces, but he'll use soft tabs (tabs that turn into spaces)
brackets on the same line kinda guy (he’s wrong but that’s who he is)
he uses all the languages he mentioned in the math meetup scene but his favorite language is python because of its hella Dope math library (shoutout to math.py, i never fuckin use it)
second favorite is C. he loves the power of direct memory manipulation for getting into the Nitty Gritty. and he's not afraid to bust out assembly.
but because he switches between those two a lot, semicolons (or the lack thereof) fucks him over frequently
he uses vim. like he really uses vim. he's got one of those colored keyboards with the popular shortcuts and commands on it. his vimrc file is something he custom wrote and he’s Very Proud of it. he’s got the whole custom highlighting thing going on.
this man cannot survive without his Multitude of bash scripts.
watching him try to work on someone else’s computer is like watching a baby try to walk. his setup is so specific to him and what he needs to work that anything else just Doesn’t Work for him. he’ll try to do one of the shortcuts he’s set up that he’s so used to and nothing happens and he’s just :o
at least one of his six monitors is always just playing random youtube/netflix stuff in the background as he works, but as soon as he really really needs to focus he turns it off so he can figure stuff out.
frantic whiteboard pseudocoding as he tries to map out what he sees in his head for other people to understand or before he loses it. his handwriting is messy and barely legible. there are 5 expo markers laying around on his desk, all of which are shitty and out of ink, but he forgets to get new ones. he loves those white board desks and he’s shoved everything off a desk before so he can write on it.
writes down bits of code on whatever he can when he figures out how to do something that he’s been stuck on
if he’s having a particularly hard time on something at the moment, he tries to take a break but it still Consumes his thoughts. he angrily paces around the Quant Dungeon a lot, trying to calm down but Failing.
spends Hours Not Reading The Documentation and then getting angry when he finally resigns looks at it and it solves all his problems
he likes watching those videos on youtube that visualize all the different sorting algos (i really,,,, really,,,,, like doing this) ((idk maybe he does this as a visual stim maybe))
favorite data struct is leftist heaps. he likes the organized balance.
favorite sorting algo is merge sort because he likes seeing all the elements being broken down and then coming back together, in an organized order.
he uses Arch, btw. (im sorry please don’t kill me for this im very sorry)
he judges you based on what Linux distro you prefer, all while knowing people judge him the Most for using Arch.
he goes to meetup.com programming meetups and tries and fails to make friends
he’s in the ACM special interest group for econ and computation
if god forbid he has to pair program, he’s the most MISERABLE motherfucker to work with. if he’s the one driving, he won’t listen to any suggestions and if he’s the one watching, then he’s backseat programming the entire time.
he's not into hacktivism personally but he likes reading about it and knowing the Lore as well as reading about cybersecurity/penetration testing
he definitely submits memes to r/programmerhumor and then also complains that the subreddit is too general
he likes what he does but he doesn't usually program off the clock. but sometimes he'll get an idea for a personal project!!
his has exactly one personal project at a time. it either gets finished or it doesn’t before he moves onto the next one.
his personal GitHub is silent for months and then suddenly for a week straight it's dark green before fading into silence again
doesn’t like working from home. he really needs the separation between his work space and his living space.
very cryptic and unhelpful commit messages. when trying to roll back he hates himself because he has no IDEA what him in the past meant by “node updated,” because WHAT IN THE NODE WAS UPDATED??? he didn’t write it down and now it’s been two months since he’s looked at this code and he has no fucking clue.
names his variables funky things, also causing trouble for himself down the line.
sometimes leaves a dangling else statement when he writes an if, as if daring the if statement not to execute
leaves funny comments for himself in his code and other non helpful comments for whoever has to work on his code/maintain it after him. literally all sorts of remarks except for describing what his code actually does. job security! until he forgets how the fuck he did something, which is honestly only like two months later.
has definitely done the “//don’t touch, this works by magic” comment and the “//don’t refactor and come crying to me when it breaks” comment
this is probably his second real job out of college. he reads early-mid 20s to me, and so he’s definitely doing that comp sci thing where you hop around companies every few years to get a massive pay raise.
i think he only has his bachelor’s degree, but he definitely went to cornell. double major in comp sci and math. or comp sci and econ. definitely possible he has his masters though. i think if so he went to upenn for it and focused on the econ side there.
his internship during college is at a place that works with the math behind computer graphics. he loves matrices. he’s working for the fun of it before he gets down to business after he graduates.
his first job out of college is as a data analyst.
likes writing code to make fancy/fun graphics for his statistics/results in presentations to his bosses. if he has the time. which he usually doesn’t.
"blockchain is just a fancy linked list" he says, as he makes a killing investing in cryptocurrency so he graduates with minimal debt.
he has a "the cloud is just someone else's computer" graphic t shirt
he's very into getting the most optimal run time for in his code, which is part of what makes his algo for tmc so Good. everything needs to run as As Fast As Possible in that algo. Time Complexity Is His Jam. idk what to tell u. the dude loves math.
but also he just wrote a quad nested for loop and this is the comment above it: //This is O(scary), but seems quick enough in practice
space complexity? not so much. he doesn’t care about how much space his algos take up.
he hates maintaining code. he’s itching to create new things and he views programming as a sort of art and creative expression sometimes (im right on this. programming is creative and ill fight to the death).

Have you ever been to Australia?  Nope. Not really on top of my travel lists when it comes down to it, but it would be lovely to visit nonetheless. I'd be most excited to try their local food.
Who was the last person you know to have a birthday? Kate, our HR officer.
Are you wearing a necklace? If so, describe it.  I am not.
Do you know anyone who is left-handed? Aya. But we’re not really friends anymore.
Ever wear out a CD? What was it?  I don’t think so. I’ve broken CDs before but it was always because I had been a kid then and I constantly mishandled them.
What’s your favorite card game? I’m not into card games.
What’s your favorite fast food meal?  I usually flock to burgers and fries. Fast food rice is blechhh so I never get any meals with them, which are usually paired with fried chicken.
Where is the best restaurant you’ve ever eaten in at?  Torch. Prices are no joke either, so I don’t get to order from there a lot.
Lamb chops or pork chops?  I have pork chops more frequently and I love them, but I’d go with lamb chops. More expensive so I get them less often, but I do like the taste of lamb more.
If you HAD to pick ONE song to listen to for the rest of your life, and that would be the only song you ever heard, what would it be?  I imagine this would be so inconvenient after just a few hours...but idk. Based on my mood now, maybe Still With You by Jungkook.
Ever heard of Shinedown?  I have. I used to have a mutual who was obsessed with them. Never listened to their music, though.
What size is your bed?  Just a twin-size.
What is the first meal you remember eating?  I no longer remember that.
What was the first movie you ever saw?  Stuart Little 2.
What percentile of your class were you in?  I’m not sure about percentile, but I was just above average. Never topped the class but wasn’t behind academically, either. In our batch of around 165, I remember my ranking peaking at like 26. I don’t know what the equivalent percentile for that is.
Can you name every place you’ve ever had sex?  Yeah, I didn’t like being too adventurous anyway.
What forms of birth control have you used?  Same-sex relationship.
Do you use sponges or dishcloths when doing the dishes?  Sponge. OMG I hate touching wet cloths/fabric.
What’s your favorite song on the top twenty right now?  Butter.
Ever punched a wall?  Nope.
What was the last bug you killed and what did you use?  An ant. My finger.
Ever get pulled over by the cops and get away without a ticket?  Yes, because he noticed I was in uniform, as were my orgmates then. And I’m guessing it was also because he could tell we were all young, so he let us go.
What was your first legal alcoholic drink? A margarita, I think? < Hey, same!
What’s the most expensive things your parents ever bought you?  My education.
What’s the most expensive thing you’ve bought?  I’ve spent the most on my merch collection so far; but as for an individual item, I’ve spent close to 5k on a photobook set. I haven’t really ventured out to start spending on more adulting stuff yet, lol.
What is your favorite cover song?  Paramore’s cover of Passionfruit by Drake, or Hayley Williams’ cover of Teardrop by Massive Attack.
Did you ever drop out of school?  Nope, I did everything in one go.
Ever raise a child that wasn’t your own for more than 3 months?  I have not.
Strangest medical procedure ever performed on you?  I’ve only had basics done on me.
Does the place you work have music playing? What sort?  The extremely few times I had to go to the physical office, my co-workers put on some music, yeah. It had been a very chill atmosphere and they simply turned on YouTube on the TV and put on a playlist of BTS and Taylor Swift songs.
Do you use Windows, Mac, Linux, or something else entirely?  Mac.
Do you cut tags out of clothing so they don’t itch and bother you?  Yes, I hate how the tags feel for the most part. The only time I don’t cut them off is if the brand is on the pricey side.
How many times a year do you go on vacation?  Under normal circumstances, around 3-5 with my family.
What is your favorite time period in history to learn about?  It’s easier for me to say what periods I find a little boring: medieval/dark ages and anything about wars. Every other period I’d happily soak up like a sponge.
What’s the saddest report you have ever seen on the news?  Mmmh, probably kids dying from freak accidents and seeing the parents get interviewed. Just last night I had to hear about a 4 year old who ran towards a car while playing outside. Hearing the dad cry and plead was gut-wrenching.
In your honest opinion, what is the scariest sea creature you know?  Idk, maybe those that live in the super deep sea and look nothing like what we would usually perceive as normal sea creatures.
What superpower do you think would be the most handy in times of trouble?  I guess it would have to depend on the issue you find yourself stuck in. But I think being able to control time would be convenient, since you can just easily undo mistakes.
Do you believe there is just one love for everyone, or…?  No. That would invalidate experiences for a lot of people. :/
Why are you best friends with your best friend?  She’s always been supportive and stuck by my side no matter what I’ve been through. We also have great chemistry and have always shared the same sense of goofy humor.
Do you world peace is truly a possibility in the future?  No.
Pretend you are a really good cook, what meal would you make?  I’d just make sashimi everyday.
What do you think of when you look at the stars?  I tend to reminisce when I do so. Think about what’s happened in the past, people who’ve left, what I’ve lost...and that there’s probably good reason why things are the way they are now.
If a turtle doesn’t have a shell, is he homeless or naked? Dead? Their shells are part of their actual skeletal structure. < Well there we go.
What’s one thing you feel you must do in your life before it ends?  Travel the world.
What Disney princess are you most like? Personality-wise, I mean.  Ariel. Pretty fucking clumsy, prioritizes the wrong things out of love.
What do you think is the most important thing in this life is?  Happiness.
Do you use any acne medication?  Nah, I just splash my face with water every morning.
Have you ever tried to learn another language? How did it go?  [This survey seems to be a mix of a few surveys, so some of the questions - like this, I’ve already answered. I’ll be striking out the ones I’ve already delved on but if you’ll take this survey as well, feel free to remove the strike!]
Do you still have a landline phone in your home?
Throughout a typical week, which places are you likely to go?  LOL just home. I work from home, and I’m usually exhausted during the weekend to want to go out.
How often do you use your webcam, if you even have one that is?  A few times a week for work. Most of the time we communicate just through audio, but there are a few meetings or clients that prefer video.
Do you have a lock number or pattern for your phone?  It’s a number combination, but I seldom get to use it. I usually rely on thumb ID.
What was the last thing you bought from a liquor store?  Not a liquor store but I just got a few bottles of beer from 7-Eleven.
Is there any cereal in your house? What kind?  We don’t. We’re not really a big cereal-eating family.
What's the most number of people you've ever lived with?  11. That’s a set of grandparents (2), my family (4), my mom’s older brother’s family (4), and my mom’s younger brother (1).
Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day?
Do you have any pets? How long have you had them?  I have two. 13 years with Kimi, a year with Cooper.
What's your favourite kind of cheese?  Feta and mozzarella.
Have you danced in the rain?  Once or twice, when I was a lot younger.
Who is your favorite person to text?  I don’t text anymore, but I frequently communicate with Angela on Messenger.
What’s your favorite brand of jeans?  My favorite pair is from Zara, but I don’t have a go-to brand for jeans per se.
Do you enjoy Mario games?  Not all of them, but sure.
What’s your favorite online game? I don’t play games.
Have you ever been hit with a ball in gym class?  Possibly. Not remarkable enough for me to remember though.
Who was last to cook for you?  Dad.
Would you ever wish to explore a cave?  I would love to. I had the chance to explore one during our trip to Sagada, but the tour guide decided against it since I had the wrong footwear and it wasn’t going to be safe if I tried. :( I did get to go to the underground cave in Palawan though, and that was a really fun experience.
You see the person you fell hardest for. What do you do?  I’d give her a small, polite/curt smile and maybe wave, then go on with whatever it was I’ve been doing. Of course, I doubt it would actually go that way because I believe she’d run for the hills if she ever spotted me.
Have you ever ridden in a car with someone who was high?  No. I would refuse to, especially if they were the one driving.
Did you ever date the last person you kissed?  Yeah, for too long.
Have you ever held a snake?  I have! A few times.
How often do you have friends over to your house?  Almost never. Angela and Hans coming over for Sowoozoo two weeks ago was just an exception.
Have you ever had a boss who acted unprofessionally?  No, I wouldn’t say that.
Who was the last person who cried around you? Why did they start crying? Was it unexpected?
Do you have any exercises you do everyday?
Are you more of a dog or cat person?
Have you ever had a dream of stabbing someone?
Would you ever have a bird as a pet?
Have you ever had to speak at a funeral?
Do you know someone who’s been cremated?
What is your favorite animated movie?
Did your grandparents teach you anything?  Just some religion stuff and how to be a nice Catholic and all. Doesn’t apply to me, obvs, but I still outwardly listen out of respect.
Do you want/have a Bachelor's degree?  Yes.
Are you into superheroes? Who's your favourite?  I am most definitely not.
Have you ever played Cards Against Humanity? Did you like it?  Sure, a few times. Yes, it was fun and hilarious.
Have you ever played a drinking game? Which ones?  Just the basic ones like truth or dare and never have I ever.
Did you ever play Neopets when you were younger?
Have you ever been to Mexico?  No, but would be nice to travel there.
Have your parents ever worked in medicine? No, not their field.
Is there anything unusual about your house?  We don’t have a gate, which has always bugged me.
How many serious relationships have you been in?  One.
Do you listen to Rise Against?  Much more when I was in high school. I haven’t revisited their music in years.
When was the last time you congratulated someone?  Reggy since she posted her graduation portrait the other day.
Have you ever taken care of a newborn baby?  Nah.
How old were you when you got your ears pierced?  Like a month old, I believe.
Do you snore when you sleep?  Rarely. A snore or two would usually come out only if I’m extremely exhausted.
What was the last type of burger you ate?  A Baconator from Wendy’s.

Hi, fellow student with adhd here, I also had a terrible semester because of the online stuff, but I have to say, the single thing that helped me most was having other people keep me kinda responsible, and I don't mean parents checking in on me, I mean I have a study group, and we met online nearly every day to study together, talk about uni stuff and help eachother with assignments, this ensured that I actually studied, because I often find myself having to be the one who explains things.
I wouldn't worry about a schedule too much, since I also suck with keeping to scedules and I didn't keep to one, tho do make like a to do list where you can put all the academic stuff you have to do, preferably use some electronic one that makes a nice ding sound when you tick something off so you want to complete more stuff.
Also reward yourself for doing stuff, for example, I have a practical report to finish, if I can do that today I get to play video games tonight.
I'm also not really that organized, but I know where everything is, and I can get everything I need really easily.
Get some study music, Idk about you but I cannot function in a completely quiet environment, so I have study music, I recommend checking out Vexento and The Fat Rat, for this, their music is upbeat electronica, without any lyrics. You can also try playing video game sound tracks as they are designed to keep you engaged.
If you are someone who easily goes into hyperfocus and forgets to do things like eat, or shower or stuff set alarms on your phone to remind you to do those things.
The nerotypical versions of staying orginized, and sticking to schedules and routines often doesn't work for us, so don't do it that way.
Orginized can mean your desk is super neat and everyrhing is in its perfect place, but that stresses me out because I don't want to ruin it, so my desk is not perfectly orginized, I have a pile of notebooks, a crate of stationary and my laptop on my desk, and all my textbooks on the shelf right next to my desk, and thats where physical orginization stops.
Now my computer is a bit of a different story(keep in mind I'm using windows, I could probably explain how to orginize a linux machine, but I have 0 experience with Mac, because I could never afford one, and the one time I could afford a low end Mac I rather chose buying the gaming laptop I have now) , I have it orginized better than most nt people, with a folder for each subject and subfolders for each study unit, where I keep documents, electronic notes, class videos, and copies of assignments I handed in.
Usually each of those things gets it own subfolder, but it depends on how much work the subject is, if I get one video, one homework, one class notes and one assignment per study unit, I'm not going to put those in separate folders, because it's not enough stuff, but if we work on one study unit for a couple of week and get multiple sets of the things mentioned above I am putting things in their own folders.
Further than that I keep my school stuff and my personal stuff separate, I use the built in folder system suggestions for where to put documents, photos, videos, and all that for my personal stuff, but a different system for my school stuff, the one I just explained. I also keep my desktop orginized by having shortcuts to folders for the different types of things I might have on my desktop instead of having 2000 icons right on my desktop.
Essentially instead of looking like this
Tumblr media
[id: a computer desktop with a blue background filled with icons of apps, documents, and folders, the background is not clearly seen and there is no empty space for new icons]
My desktop looks like this
Tumblr media
[id: a computer desktop with an image of Jupiter as the background. There is one line of 6 icons on the left hand side, from top to bottom they are: the recycle bin, a blue xbox controller labeled games, a pink cartoon of saturn and a few stars labeled internet, the matrix style falling numbers labled Coding, a red youtube play button labled media, a picture of white mountains with hexagons in the middle labled adobe. The task bar at the bottom of the screen is purple and has several small icons on it. There is a lot of open space on both the desktop and the taskbar]
Each of those icons in the second pic is actually a shortcut to a folder where I keep the shortcuts for relevant apps. Also important, I don't keep documents and things like that on my desktop, or in my desktop folders, those are explicitly for app shortcuts, I actually have quite a few things on my taskbar, these are the things I use almost every day, and I want to be able to launch without minimizing whatever window I might already have open, things like my browser, discord, spotify, whatsapp, mail, file explorer, and a few things I need for school.
Next is the startup, the tings in the startup are apps that launch when you turn on your computer. I put things I know I use every single day in my startup, and turn off the rest. The things I currently have launching in startup are: my todo list, discord, spotify, my browser (with a tab of my uni website open), and whatsapp. Discord because that where my study group meets and I have a personal server I use to sync files between devices, and whatsapp because many of my lecturers made whatsapp groups for their classes, so it's easiest to contact them there, also I can easily talk to friends and fellow students without having to switch my attention to my phone to do it.
I try to clean out my downloads at least once a week, but it really depends on how much stuff is in there, my typical rule is I clean it as soon as there's more things than what fits into one screen, and that takes about a week.
I clean my main mailbox daily, and I have 5 email address to avoid clutter and spam in the important ones, I have one for school, one for friends and personal stuff, one for work and professional stuff, one for signing up to things, including social media, and one for the things my parents can't know about (I created it solely for my alternate social media accounts, tumblr, and YouTube)
I also have external hard drives for tv shows and archiving things I don't use often enough to have a reason for them taking up space on my computer, I archive stuff usually at the end of each semester.
My computer is extremely orginized when compared to my physical environment, and this is mostly because if it's not orginized it turns into a black hole and I can't find anything.
I'm also a computer science (and physics) major and because of how my compsci lecturers want our programming assignments, I can't have them touching, so I need to have a very orginized file system (alot of our assignments are expanding on a program, but we're not allowed to change the name of the program, so I have to keep each new one in a separate folder to avoid the computer getting confused).
I also use the same computer I use for school for things like gaming, and like I mentioned above it's a gaming computer, so it has a small ssd where my downloads land and where my important apps are installed, and a mechanical hard drive where the rest of the stuff goes, but because my default landing area for most things is my ssd, I have to clean it often to avoid it filling up and slowing down my computer.
So yeah that's how I survived the semester, study group, music, todo list, rewards and very orginized desktop. The semester had quite a rough start since alot of those things weren't properly in place at the start of the semester, but once it was all in place and set up the rest of the semester went fine actually, and I passed most subjects with my usual marks, or better (I still have one exam left, but I only need like 30% to pass). Sorry if that was a bit long to read. If you have questions feel free to dm me
My university was pretty much all online this semester and I don’t know if it was just me or not, but that was the worst semester I’ve ever gone through. And the worst part is that I know for a fact that I’m going to have to go through it all over again for the spring semester. Online learning is not my cup of tea, to put it very lightly.
I have tried looking at different websites to look for advice on how to be successful as a student with ADHD and I’m honestly starting to get a bit frustrated. Pretty much every website says “Stay organized!” or “Stick to a schedule” which frustrates me a bit because I get that its super important,  I understand once I get it life will become a whole lot easier and I genuinely want to get better at it.  But my real question is HOW?  How do I stick with said routine when different events happen in my day that might interrupt it? How do I organize my thoughts, even on the more foggy days? How do I take these steps when my brain fights me every step of the way?
I’d love to hear from others who have ADHD on how they’ve navigated this as they’ve begun doing online learning or work from home. Or if you all have better websites than what I’m finding

@burtonesquevincent tagged me, thanks! :)
Rules: answer all the questions, add one of your own and tag as many people as there are questions i mean you can tag other people then :)
1. coke or pepsi?
lemon pepsi? idk
2. disney or dreamworks?
Dreamworks!
3. coffee or tea?
herbal/fruit/light green tea. I don’t like bitter taste.
4. books or movies?
both
5. windows or mac?
Windows? I used to want Mac, but today it just seems like an overpriced product that prefers design over functionality. Once game developers start including Linux I’ll switch to Linux.
6. dc or marvel?
I feel like it’s more about the writers, as I just don’t like big corporations much. I really liked Young Avengers and Journey into Mystery. And Agent of Asgard, but it broke my heart so idk if I can recommend it (yes I can), I’ve also read some Robin stuff (mostly Nightwing and Red Robin), where the quality differed as it was written by numerous authors. I want to read Ms Marvel. I started to read Wicked and Divine (Image comics) but there was too much pop-culture references that said nothing to me (not sure, if i’m too eastern Europe, too young, or too abstinent for it. but I might revisit it later because the plot was interesting)
7. xbox or playstation?
PC. Only game console I like is a good ol’ gameboy. (read as: i’m broke and i’ve never owned either)
8. dragon age or mass effect?
Dragon Age, the plots seem more interesting and I love fantasy more than military sci-fi. I don’t like the design of either. I would say I’m picky, when it comes to 3D games, but then... I like WoW, Minecraft, Don’t Starve, Pokémon, Undertale, point ‘n’ click text-heavy adventures and Subnautica and not much more. So idk :D I prefer isometrics and 2D, exploring landscapes, gathering resources, getting to know characters, uncovering mysteries. Romance, timed missions and teambuilding? Nah. 1st person shooters? EVIL.
9. night owl or early riser?
hoo hoo, it’s currently after 1AM and since I don’t have work tommorow, I’m not getting out of bed before the lunch :D
10. cards or chess?
cards. chess are too depressive (idk why, it just makes me sad even if I don’t lose)
11. chocolate or vanilla?
vanilla. I rarely eat chocolate and I used to like the white one the best before I started eating vegan. i got used to the chocolate flavour and sometimes actually crave it a lot, but i still mostly prefer vanilla flavour.
12.vans or converse?
never had any of them, but I would really like to have converse style shoes that go mid-calf length.
13. fluff or angst?
hurt comfort with happy, even unrealisticaly sweet ending. shut up.
14. beach or forest?
calm beach near a calm forrest where there are no dangerous or annoying insects (my skin is delicate and insects tend to be inconsiderate :D)
15. dogs or cats?
generally? cats, i just too often can’t share the dog enthusiasm and being a good team player exhausts me. but animals have different personalities that doesn’t have to match the stereotypes, so I keep an open mind.
16. clear skies or rain?
both is nice, as long as it changes in few days
17. cooking or eating out?
Eating out, probably. I’m not a terrific cook and I hate doing the dishes.
18. spicy food or mild food?
Spicy!
19. halloween/samhain or solstice/yule/christmas?
Halloween. But I like both :)
20. would you rather forever be a little too cold or a little too hot?
eh, probably the first one, but both sounds shit
21. if you could have a superpower, what would it be?
Telekinesis and flying. Aka I wouldn’t have to get up for snacks and I could avoid all obstacles and people when running late somewhere. Also discovering abandoned roofs and towers :3 Oh, and it would be nice if I actually could remember stuff and stay motivated :D
22. animation or live action?
unfair! but if I had to choose, 2D animation.
23. baths or showers?
baths aren’t an option mostly, not enough hot water or bad bath tub. I love baths, but only when it’s perfect temperature and a nice bath tub. otherwise, showers.
24. team cap or team ironman?
MCU? Steve. Comics? Idk, neither.
25. fantasy or sci-fi?
my favourite setting is when it mixes
26. do you have three or four favourite quotes, if so, what are they?
All that is gold does not glitter/Not all those who wander are lost (LotR)
Everybody want’s to change the world but no one wants to die (MCR)
27. youtube or netflix?
youtube
28. harry potter or percy jackson?
Harry Potter. I didn’t read PJ.
29. when do you feel accomplished?
when I can make the brave decision.
30. star wars or star trek?
really?? both, ofc.
31. paperback or hardback books?
hardback, except for the Terry Pratchett books.
32. horror or rom-com?
Hm. How about a horror setting, but it’s funny in an un-american way?
33. tv shows or movies?
eeeeeh, probably movies, i don’t have much time lately so it’s more accesible medium for me
34. favourite animal?
cats, water turtles, parrots, elephants, monkeys...
35. favourite genre of music?
rock, country, rock ‘n’ roll... I like quick beat and catchy melody. I don’t like recitals/hip hop/rap, baladas and whiny pop.
36. least favourite book?
I tend not to remember books I dislike. Serves them good.
37. favourite season?
Late spring, not too hot summer days and early autumn. Temperature is everything.
38. song that’s currently stuck in your head?
Nothing in particular. But I’m always in mood to sing good ol’ MCR at shower :D
39. what kind of pyjamas do you wear?
sweatpants/shorts and a tank top/shirt. zero shoes.
40. how many existential crises do you have on an average day?
Lately, not that much? It’s like twice a week usually, but nothing devastating.
41. if you can only choose one song to be played at your funeral, what would it be?
i don’t think I’ve actually thought about my funeral before? I wouldn’t choose anything with words, just some calm but uplifting melody. Maybe Undertale (from Undertale :).
42. favourite theme song to a TV show?
dun dun dun... go go naruto! :D idek, I don’t even atch TV shows that much...
43. harry potter movies or books?
I liked the books more, but I can’t remember when I read them the last time. The movies are cool too though :)
44. you can make your OTP become canon but you’ll forget that tumblr exists. will you do it?
I’m not giving up this site up! It has it’s problems and bugs, but most of the time it encourages me and puts nice pictures on my dash, so I feel better.
45. do you play an instrument and if so, what is it?
I play the piano badly and I have a basic knowledge how most of the instruments work, does it count? :D
46. what is the worst way to die?
hopeless
47. if you could be entirely invisible for a day, what would you do?
I would use it to make a political statement or action - I would try to find dirt on openly bigoted and hateful famous people and politicians, and maybe sabbotage some neonazis.
48. If you could have personally witnessed anything in history what would it be?
I’d be fascined to find out what was there before the Big Bang. I don’t think I’d be able to comprehend it by just human senses alone though...
49. If you could understand animals but you could never understand humans again, would you?
No. I worked hard to understand at least a little about humans. And I don’t think understanding animals (at least to some extent) is impossible for humans.
50. What is your most favourite album currently?
I don’t do albums.
51. What is your favourite word/phrase/colloquiallism? Name one (or more) per language you speak c:
We’ll burn that bridge when we get there. (eng)
Wanderlust (de) - longing to travel and explore (ok, saying i speak german would be a bit of an overstatement, but i like this word and i vagely understand german, so...)
Kdo si hraje, nezlobí (cz) - [playing prevents mischief] used in situations where the playing leads directly to mischief

reblog to mainly think I guess, and also figure out which one I'd like to try this with this time...
Tho with all of the different flavors of linux, I don't remember which desktop environment I like most. XFCE is lightweight and kind of old fashioned, cinnamon is a memory hog, kde is also one but kind of snazzy, I don't like ubuntu's at all... was it unity?
actually I'd been trying to stay away from ubuntu given what they've been doing. sticking me with debian. either linux mint debian, or just straight debian.
I love linux and technology to death and hate that I'm still a newbie at running linux/bsd/unix operating systems years after I got fascinated with it. makes me kinda sad.
but no time to learn like the present, huh?
these are the disks for the distros I've found off hand:
Debian 11.6.0 (mate, lxqt, lxde, cinnamon, and the standard install)
Linux mint 21 and it's variations (that I'm ignoring because Ubuntu)
Linux mint debian editions 5-6
a windows 10 install disk just in case
had a flash drive of linux mint debian I think; but idk where it went, I took it over to my siblings to install it on a laptop they had and it got lost in the mess.... it booted so fast too T_T;;
these are all the current distros I have currently as I haven't been paying attention to what the linux mint/debian teams were up to.
idk how tf I was able to run fedora on a computer back in the day, but in hindsight it was kind of cool~~!! and I liked fedora's desktop environment~~ it was probably also a memory hog but the different desktops and stuff was so snazzy~~ I forgot what the name for the environment was tho. GNOME?
reminds me of the time I tried to drop my sibling into the deep and and installed OpenSUSE on their system before reinstalling windows again, lol.
just moreso thinking to myself this time instead of a full blown rant about it. I guess I'll poke around with getting it to work at some point.
I never even thought about it not installing the boot partition not where it should be. I thought the installer for whatever I was installng was smart enough to put it in the proper place. I seriously just thought that windows had it's hooks so deep into the system that it was preventing linux from booting somehow. the thought never crossed my mind.
Guess don't feel stupid cause I'm learning~~ don't feel stupid for learning new things, even if it makes you feel stupid for a bit, it's a new piece of information that we didn't know about until then.
don't feel stupid for learning~~
just screw around and find out~~! and if I do lose any data, just copy it back over from my external hard drive.
edit: I think maybe I found it~~!! Hopefully found the issue but then how to fix. I poked around in the BIOS a bit and found that I can make a new boot path; perhaps I'll need to do that instead of it just pointing to a windows partition that no longer exists.
now how to do that? idk where the linux boot thing is unless i can find the path while messing around in the bios after I install a distro.
hopefully now I"m one step closer to running linux on my beefier computer~~!! Didn't think to check the boot paths in the BIOS of all things cause I didn't know it was a thing.
will update or reblog this post if something happens~~ assuming people actually care. maybe I'm just writing this for myself but who knows.
now what distribution do I want to use? is the main question. look for a comparison of all the desktop environments on youtube? or pop in the disks and waste time booting them all and poking around?
stupid thing about the BIOS is, I changed the boot priority of the linux live cd thing and the windows boot loader itself, and I guess because no disk is in the drive, the linux live cd thing isn't the same thing as the cd drive itself... and it's still under the windows boot loader even after I saved the settings. ??
so this would mean:
choose a distro to use
install distro
restart machine not being surprised that it won't boot
hit key to enter bios
go to settings and change the boot path to whatever boot path linux uses
troubleshoot until the machine boots
congrats, you're now using linux on a computer you thought it wouldn't work on
windows/linux rant
unrelated to SMT or anything on my blog currently I guess...
I keep seeing the "prep for windows 11" thing show up on my computer, and it upsets me every time that you have to have a microsoft account to install it.
windows 10 reaches end of support next year~~
I hope by then the computer I"m using will actually let me run linux on it instead of an outdated windows os....
I want to run linux on this machine so bad but whenever I try to install it, it seems to install fine and dandy
and then it won't boot
I've snooped around in the BIOS, disabled the "smart startup" or "secure startup" or whatever else I thought was borking the boot for linux.
but it still won't boot~~~
and sadly i've got games on here that only work on windows anyway.
I'd much rather be able to stay relatively safe online and maintain an OS, than play the games I bought on steam....
something is preventing linux from booting on this machine, it upsets me when I think about it, and it upsets me more when I try to install linux and it goes fine, but then doesn't boot
cause I have to take the time to reinstall windows again.....
why computer? why won't you let linux boot? what do I need to do to you to have linux actually boot? I don't understand...
*confused screaming*
running an ASUS ROG Stryx gaming pc that I bought on impulse years ago. so you'd think linux mint would boot just fine, right??
how do I fix it? if I can fix it? especially if I don't destroy the data on the second hard drive of this thing. I've got stuff I don't want to lose on here, preferably....
