CONLANG COMMUNITY OF TUMBLR
I am currently trying to decipher the conlang of Dark Tongue, the language of Chaos in Warhammer Fantasy and 40k, using minimal and inconsistant references. I'd say I'm making pretty good headway for what I'm working with, having deciphered near enough half of the compound words and root meanings that I actually have as sources. That being said, I have run into several issues that I could use help with:
The phonemes of this language do not map onto english, but I do have access to the phonetic alphabet used by the language. Is there any way to set up such that I can type in that script?
Two of the phonemes don't make any sense. They have been written as (I, ee) and (E, ii), and I cannot figure out the correct pronounciation for either of them - and they do some heavy lifting as vowel sounds in this language. Please help in some way lol
I just straight up don't have enough sources. This one is a call to fans of 40k and Warhammer Fantasy: please send in some excerpts you can find that feature the Dark Tongue, used by Chaos rituals, magic, and daemons, which has a corrupted form used by the Beastmen (making it less useful but still a potential source).
I do not study languages outside of having a creative writing degree and a passing knowledge of French (I can tell people that I don't speak it). Please help in any way cause I am in over my head lol
I am more than willing to go into details to any degree, and would in fact shout into the void if I but thought the void wanted to listen. Any help as appreciated!

My gf and I were talking about escalators and started wondering about the word "escalator" - why is it called that and why is there no opposite? Like, "to escalate" means to go up. So just going by the word, and "escalator" should not go down. Is there a matching word or has the English language just stuck with this one form?

Im sorry 😭😭😭 colony just makes me think of settlers or pilgrims. (Although now that I think about it can someone draw bats dressed as pilgrims, that sounds kinda cute)
I just wish we got something better like a parliament of owls, a pandemonium of parrots, a charm of finches and an unkindness/conspiracy/rave of ravens(they were clearly the favorite).
What do the bat's in the batcave do??
Like they never get startled or shit on anything important so they're probably trained. But does Bruce ever use them. Sort of like how the government used pigeons yk. Do they spy on bad guys? Has he ever called on them to finish a fight? Are there carrier bats that just send letters coz "batman's too mysterious to send emails Alfred!"?
There's no way Bruce "breathes in contingency plans" Wayne has a swarm of bat's at his disposal and doesn't use it ever. I'm sure there's a bunch of bat-centric contingency plans. Partly coz it's practical but mostly coz it's on brand.

My friend made a super cool language guessing game that is now fully functional!
https://langle.uk/
The database has a lot of minority languages (especially in level 3) and if you don’t guess correctly, you get a hint based on linguistic relatedness.
#this is genuine btw#not some weird hacked post#he's just coded it ground up and i told him not to do blue because of twitter/tumblr/fb/etc#but evidently twitter blue is now (mostly) gone so it's less of an issue#linguistics

What would the Elvish word for "blorbo" be?
Rather than having a set list of options, today's poll is open-ended! If you have a suggestion, post it in the comments or a reply.
I know we've got some serious Tolkien scholars here on tumblr, and I'd love to hear a breakdown of what exactly Jirt might have chosen to mean "favorite or beloved character" (definition courtesy Urban Dictionary).
Extra credit:
Is the word different in Sindarin/Quenya?
How would Tolkien use the word in a sentence?
If used as a name, would "Blorbo" be a dwarf or a hobbit?
If Tolkien were alive today, would he describe Lúthien as his "blorbo"?
What about Elvish words for "glup shitto," "skrunkly," and "woobie"?
If you don't know Elvish (and why would you?), an Elvish dictionary is available at www.elfdict.com.
Or, you can straight-up use Finnish and Welsh. Or, just make up something that sounds like a word Legolas might say. Open-ended means there's no limit to your choices. :)
