Let Our Souls Resist On Together

Just as Merlin and Arthur are preparing for their wedding, an ancient foe strikes at Arthur from within. (In more ways than one) as they try to face this new threat Merlin starts to reel, realizing that Arthur being immortal now means Arthur will have to face the pain of losing everyone he cares about besides Merlin again. Furthermore, Merlin realizes he himself has gotten closer to the new knights and sorcerers than he let himself get to anyone in hundreds of years... And he doesn't know how many more times he can take the pain of losing people he cares about. Soon Merlin has to face the unthinkable, and an enemy that is fully willing to take advantage of his pain. 

Expect Angst, Humor, Banter, Fluff, and lots of Merthur. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I have magic?” Arthur's voice broke on the last word.

“No! At least not like most sorcerers do… I think you have certain magical abilities…”

“What is the difference between magical abilities and magic, Merlin? Because I’m certainly failing to see it!” Arthur yelled. His hands now gripped his legs hard through the towel.

“Magic lets you do anything but has certain limits…” Merlin told him. “And usually involves eyes turning gold… Keeper magic must be different, or it seems like it is; I think it is. What you can do is likely more restricted but has different limits? I don’t know, Arthur, I’ve never studied keeper magic!”

Merlin sank down on the bench beside his king and love. “You’ll have to learn to control it. But once you do, this could be…” The sorcerer trailed off, realizing just what would happen when Arthur learned how to teleport anywhere he wanted. “Oh, gods, you’re going to be insufferable. I’m doomed.”

As Arthur saw Merlin’s expression, a grin slowly spread over his own face. “You know Mer lin, I can think of a lot of good uses for this…”

Merlin gave a performative groan.

“Including being able to come and kiss you whenever I want…”

Merlin perked up slightly, his eyes moving to Arthur’s lips. Alright, perhaps this would not be so bad.

Before he could get too excited, a frown came over Arthur’s face. His posture stiffened slightly, just enough for Merlin to notice. “Merlin. I don’t think it's just keeper powers,” Arthur told him softly. Merlin watched him. There was something in Arthur's tone that made him hesitate.  

“What do you mean?” Merlin asked.

I don’t think I can emphasize enough just how much Elementary understood the core of Sherlock Holmes’ character, and the kind of cases and people he is drawn to, right from the very first episode.

The pilot opens with a wealthy woman’s murder. The prime suspect is a man who is a patient of the woman’s husband, a doctor, for help with his mental disorder. The man is desperately trying to avoid any triggers that may cause him to become violent, as he has been in the past. The doctor decides to use this man as a tool to kill his wife to collect her life insurance. He manipulates both his patient and his wife, alters the man’s medications, and ignores the man’s pleas for help, in order to set a scenario that is guaranteed to trigger the man’s violence - resulting in his wife’s death and later his patient’s.

When Sherlock pieces this together, he confronts the doctor, which leads to this:

And that’s what drives Sherlock to confront the doctor directly. There’s no smugness in being right, or for figuring out who the murderer was and how he did it. Sherlock realizes that this man’s patient was just another victim - someone who desperately wanted and sought help, only to be mistreated. Sherlock Holmes in this adaptation cares so deeply about people, especially those who are denied help when they need it most, and we learn all of this from the very first case.
