A Pragmatic and surprisingly comforting perspective about the Trump 2nd Presidency from the ACLU
***Apologies if this is how you found out the 2024 election results***
Blacked out part is my name.
I’m not going to let this make me give up. It’s disheartening, and today I will wallow, probably tomorrow too

I will continue to do my part in my community to spread the activism and promote change for the world I want to live in. I want to change the world AND help with the dishes.
And I won’t let an orange pit stain be what stops me from trying to be better.

I don't know who needs to hear this (me) but if you're on the fence about participating in Whumptober this year...just remember, there's no need to weigh yourself down with so many personal rules that it's no longer fun. You don't have to be a completionist. You don't have to come up with a theme and stick to that exclusively. You can half-ass stuff or make simple contributions or whatever works for you! You don't have to make a project difficult to make it have value.
#whumptober#also don't be surprised if you don't get much engagement#it's not a reflection of the quality of your work#there's a LOT of content for whumptober#ppl have limited time & energy and may not get to everything#i'm moving again soon#hopefully the last time for a while!#and this one is a short move thank goodness#so i know i'm not going to be a whumptober completionist#BUT#i'm going to have a few whumplets to celebrate the season

the thing with chappell is that it’s important to be principled, it’s admirable to be outspoken, it’s a good thing that she’s saying what she’s saying in the space that she’s in. but you can’t be those things and also unprepared and unable to take care of yourself when your chosen profession is Public Person. i’ve never disagreed with anything she’s said but if she keeps taking it this hard then her team needs to figure out a way to change the way she currently operates otherwise her career is going to be short and have longterm damage
#like…… canceling shows the night before is actually something people have the right to be upset about if it continues to be a trend#she has every right to her mental health and boundaries and her privacy but she’s also got to live in the world as it is#and as things stand they need to figure out a way to either get her off social media or limit her press/public engagement in a way that#keeps her healthy#so that she can have the career she wants#bc this is not sustainable for anyone involved

one trc opinion i have that i don't really have an entire explanation for is that i think blue and henry are the only characters with like a normal knowledge of pop culture. like they've seen movies they've heard music. henry definitely more than blue but despite the fact that blue's tastes would be more weird I DO think she knows about more mainstream things. she has heard top 40 radio she has watched a disney channel movie she is capable of making references. everyone else on the other hand? gansey is not aware of anything that came into being this century. adam gives strong 'doesn't listen to music' energy. you ask him what he likes and he's like i don't know. i just don't listen to music. ronan is probably the most perplexing case because we already know he had a weird fucking childhood in which he only read alice in wonderland (and i believe it) and YET in his routine in cdth he has a designated 'movie night'. WHAT movies is he watching! i simply refuse to believe this man is capable of making a Reference. at least not a normal one. he'll just cite whatever irish myth his dad told him about as if everyone else is gonna be like oh you're so right ronan this is JUST like that part in the táin bó cúailnge. am i making any sense tonight ladies. gansey does not know who taylor swift is
#in adam's case its partly due to the fact that engaging in pop culture is just not always financially accessible#and i don't think he would have grown up with much of a connection to it#and with blue she's limited by the fact that she presumably has no social media#so would only know stuff that would naturally reach you in a small southern town#henry on the other hand has by far the most knowledge. he knows about celebrity twitter beefs#i think if you reference the karlie kloss camp met gala tweet he'll immediately know what you're on about#trc#the raven cycle

Two things can be true.
One: Unlearning conservative beliefs is hard. They tend to run deep. The more privilege you have, the harder it is. If you're able to show folks compassion as they work through it, you will be actively facilitating their growth, which in turn hopefully leads to them helping deradicalize others.
Two: Sometimes the most compassionate thing you can do is be a dick.
People don't always listen to reason. I sure don't. In your heart of hearts, I doubt you always do either. Sometimes people will hold beliefs that you cannot influence by talking it out. It's not your job to force people into new beliefs, and sometimes the best thing you can do for both yourself AND the other person is to call them on their bullshit and walk away if they don't change. A slap in the face can be THE most effective way of delivering a message.
Be kind if you can. But know when to stop.
#IF YOU CAN is also important here.#know your limits. don't engage with people that make you feel like shit. see point two.

thinking about doing a month-long event for the homestuck tumblr community to encourage people to make + post fanworks as well as reblog other people's fanworks.... where people can opt-in by being randomly assigned one of two teams (probably red and blue) so that each team has roughly the same amount of members. teams get points for making fanworks and having their posts reblogged, which encourages people to make posts and also reblog the posts made by their team members. and the top 3 people in each team to get the most points get some kind of reward... hmmmm
#if you have thoughts please let me know!!!#just trying to think of ways to encourage sharing fanworks and getting feedback through friendly competition#sort of like artfight but not the same attacking/revenge format. just the same basic idea in mind of encouraging this kind of creativity#for the reblogging to get points i don't think duplicate reblogs would count. to limit spam#but you can reblog multiple times... it just won't get you more points#i don't want it to be too complicated though#i also don't want it to end up limiting reblogs since the other team wouldn't want to reblog...................#this is like very very loose brainstorming here#i'm leaning toward this concept because it encourages people to engage with posts they might normally skip over#like if you don't really care about PM. but if someone posts their PM fanart you might reblog it anyways because they're on your team!#homestuck

Interview Question for Etsushir:
What was the vibe like as a foot soldier during the suppression of the North Finn Rebellion? Did it feel doomed from the start or did it only fall apart once the Odomache was assaulted and killed?
#Etsushir is generally very quiet and guarded and wouldn't give this extensive of a response to most people but he CAN be this#talkative when he's comfortable and being approached genuinely as a peer. He has a lot on his mind.#wrt the war:#Basically what happened was that the approach was EXTREMELY confident. The first Imperial Wardi invasion of Finnerich was an almost#one-sided affair. The Wardi side had superiority in numbers + training + weaponry. The Finns had some basal fire lances but no#muskets (and the majority had no firearms whatsoever)#But this time around the rebelling Finns had reverse engineered the muskets and produced their own. Most not of#the same quality as the Wardi muskets due to lack of resources but more than enough to be a threat#They distributed these firearms strategically by need while the Wardi forces distributed their own by rank and among elite#groups of soldiers. Which was a functional strategy to distribute this (very limited) resource when engaged in conventional#warfare but the Finns engaged primarily through guerilla tactics and thus very effectively countered the Wardi military organization.#This resulted in situations where large groups of footsoldiers armed with spears and bows were slaughtered and routed by like#A Single Guy with a gun hiding in ambush. Which was extremely demoralizing#The Wardi military forces were also plagued with infighting which only worsened when this invasion turned out to Not be a cakewalk#which made them slow and ineffective to adjust to the Finns' tactics and further damaged their own troops' morale.#Bottom line being that most of the common footsoldiers got a distinct feeling that they were Fucked pretty soon after it all began#etsushir#ask meme

Imagine if you were a gay or bi man who tried a certain firefighter show because of all the attention it was getting for one of its mains having a later in life bi awakening.....and between seasons you ventured into its fandom in search of material to tide you over til the next one. And you're greeted by a deluge of posts and fics that are just cheerfully homophobic towards one half of the newly out bi character's canon relationship on the basis of 'well he's not the RIGHT gay guy' and pushing the idea that actually its fine to cheat on him because Reasons and he's sexually predacious based on......behind the scenes implications people have divined like they're reading fucking tea leaves.
But don't get it twisted....this fandom, like all fandoms, really cares about representation!
Sorry not sorry, but we really need to kill this idea that fandoms are welcoming and inviting and inherently progressive when they're frequently insular and reductive as fuck. Every single fandom I've been in has had major trends of people doubling down on their own headcanons and fanon interpretations of the characters and willfully enacting trends aimed at running off people who like the 'wrong' characters (usually characters marginalized along one or multiple axes), like the characters in the 'wrong ways' or other bullshit.
Scott is a Bad Friend fics overtaking Teen Wolf fandom was not incidental, it was a FEATURE of the fandom, because the vast majority of that fandom did not want to share its space with anyone who had the nerve to like its main character. Survivors complaining about or criticizing the prevalance of rape fics in a certain fandom has in my experience always led to a reactionary UPTICK in those fics, with gems like 'this character can, will, must be raped' in the tags making it crystal clear that some of these fics exist because how fucking DARE anyone try and push forth a narrative not agreed upon by Fandom Main.
I could cite examples for so many other fandoms, with the commonalities always being that vast majorities in these fandoms are explicitly reacting defensively to being asked to be more mindful of fandom trends revolving around or exacerbating racism, homophobia, transphobia, rape or abuse apologia, ableism, etc....
With the most prolific fucking rallying cry across countless fandoms being "No the fuck we will NOT be doing that," because lolololol.....
Fandom is an inherently progressive space, didn't you hear?
#anyway this has been on my mind in general for a few weeks now#and its more about fandoms just being fandoms#and like....what if they werent though#these patterns migrate from one to another as fans migrate from fandom to fandom bringing their bullshit with them#like do people never get tired of just trying to call DIBS and claim fandoms for themselves while shutting out anyone else#who might have a lot to fucking offer if you werent being so gd intent on staking a claim instead of sharing perspectives#and exploring new possibilities?#and I know not everyone links certain problems with racist homophobic and other behaviors to my own issues with dark fic and rape and#abuse apologia but I do inherently see it as sharing large portions of venn diagrams even though I do not consider being a survivor to be#something that demarcates privilege in the way that axes of identity do#as its situationally based rather than inherently identity based#but the way it can affect and shape large parts of peoples' identities begets commonalities#but my point is just.....a big part of why I so often lump it in is specifically because of how people react to these things or#defend against criticism across the board#like most people know my stance on censorship and how my blood boils when its people who are throwing accusations of#censorship at those raising criticisms....#but the point is just.....think about what censorship actually IS in all practical senses of the word#its about shutting down conversations. limiting the flow of information the sharing of perspectives and experiences#THATS WHAT MAKES IT BAD#now......what about criticism inherently lends itself to any of those things if you DONT accept as a foregone conclusion that criticism#is only ever offered up in bad faith and meant as a silencing tactic#instead of just a request or offered avenue of ways for things to be done better rather than not at all?#who is ACTUALLY out here trying to shut down convos and limit possibilities?#is it really the people being critical of fandom behaviors and trends?#or the ones doubling down at the first hint of any criticism and aggressively ramping up how frequently and visibly they engage in#the criticized behaviors in efforts to drive people away or as a silencing tactic of their own?#just saying

I don’t like when people ask how many books you plan to read/have read this year one because I think that’s a weird relationship to have to books and two because I think even reading a chapter or a portion of something is valuable. this is especially true with non-fiction but even with fiction I think any amount you read, even if you don’t read the entire thing, is not a failure or ‘incomplete’
#I read basically exclusively non fiction and every page I read is beneficial like I’m always learning something#like my relationship to reading is often extractive and utilitarian because of school and research#but that extractive process doesn’t require reading the whole text like 99.9% of the time#I’ve only read a third of Orientalism for example but like I have a good grasp of Said’s core arguments and concepts#and like part of how I finished authoritarian personality (a 1000 page book) was by skipping & skimming sections#like the whole is not always more valuable than its components#and also like ‘I read this book to complete it’ is not an insincere way to engage with a text but I feel like it’s limiting#if that’s your primary approach to reading. Like you read a book just to say you read it#& also more petty but I think that if your argument or thesis only works if people read 100% of your book then you’re doing a poor job#of getting your point across#again obviously it’s valuable to read and process whole complete texts not dismissing that but like#I don’t find a lot of inherent value in reading a book just to complete it u know

Let's talk about Aqua "using" Akane
So Aqua makes a very big deal about "using" Akane, but... did he actually use her at all?
I mean, he makes it quite clear that he is only keeping her close because she's useful, right?
So, what is Akane useful for, exactly?
Aqua's entire premise is that Akane understands Ai better than he does. He can't lose Akane because she may help him figure out Ai and find out who his dad is.
But we never, ever see Aqua asking Akane questions about Ai. At the contrary, most of his time with Akane is spent either on Aqua and Akane helping each other, or on Aqua talking to Akane about himself rather than about Ai.
(Spoilers for the entire manga below the cut!)
Let's take the TB arc for example, since this is the arc where Aqua and Akane interact again. What do we see?
First, Aqua helps Akane voice her concerns about the script:
Then he helps solve the disconnect between the ones in charge of the script and the original author, thus doing Akane and everyone involved a big service:
Then he helps Akane win against Kana, going as far as to agree to do emotional acting in order to accomplish it:
And then he helps Akane draw Kana out into the spotlight:
In other words: Aqua spends the entire arc working as a team with Akane. He makes no effort to use her at all.
What's more, all the occasions he had to get Akane's insight about Ai? He uses them to give Akane insight about himself instead.
Which is ironic, because we eventually find out that he even went as far as planting a GPS on her sometime after Love Now, in the off-chance Akane came in contact with the culprit. He obviously was pretty serious about making the most of Akane's deduction skills...
... but how was Akane supposed to deduce anything when Aqua never gave her any info? After all, Aqua only shares that information with Akane after he thinks his revenge is over and he has no use for her anymore.
Which means that, up to the point where Aqua temporarily drops his revenge plans, we don't actually see him using Akane at all.
Despite this, we still see Aqua going on and on about how he has "used" Akane.
So, let's take a closer look at all the ways he has "used" Akane, shall we?
• "About my father" is the simplest one, since that's what Aqua wanted to use Akane for in the first place. Except that, as we saw, things don't go quite as planned and he literally doesn't do anything to have Akane find his dad.
So yes, Aqua did intend to use Akane to find his dad, but he doesn't actually put her to use. In fact, Akane finds him all on her own by pure chance much, much later.
• "The corpse" is a very interesting one, because by Aqua's own admission, he trusted Akane's capabilities enough to think she may be able to find his corpse, and fed her information to help her achieve this.
This is indeed true, except for two things. One, when Aqua starts looking for the corpse, he actually tells Akane to stay behind. She's the one that chooses to follow after him. Aqua makes it sound like Akane finding his corpse was his goal from the get-go, but his actions are at odd with his words.
Secondly, Aqua stops looking for the corpse the moment Akane suggests it may be buried, but he still takes her to Goro's house either way.
Nothing he tells her about Goro is relevant to the search of his corpse. It's completely irrelevant, in fact. But Aqua still opens up to her, sharing everything about Goro, from his upbringing to his goals to his feelings.
Once again, his words say one thing, but his actions tell a different story. Akane is the first person Aqua has opened up to about Goro, and he does so without any ulterior motive.
Which leads me to the way Aqua has "used" Akane:
• "And many other things."
This is what Aqua means by "many other things". Ever since that day, Akane has been giving Aqua emotional support and he has come to treasure it, so much so that it "saves him little by little".
I'd even say he has come to rely on it, as his monologue later shows.
Now, you may say, but isn't receiving and giving emotional support a normal part of every relationship?
And you'd be completely right! But Aqua isn't a normal guy.
Aqua is guilt-ridden to the point he is in pain whenever he enjoys anything. Since the guilt he feels colors basically everything he sees, it permeates his relationship with Akane as well.
Instead of seeing all the good he has done for her, he just sees all the ways he ties her down.
Instead of seeing how much of himself he has shared with her, he focuses on what he has kept from her.
He is such a guilt-ridden, self-deprecating person that he even apologizes when Akane finds his corpse. As if getting murdered and not being found for 20+ years was his fault!
Akane puts it best: Aqua is always trying to carry the burden on his own, always acting like every wrong is his fault.
It's no surprise then that Aqua feels guilty over allowing himself to cherish Akane's support. It's also no surprise that he tries to paint it negatively as him "using" her, because Aqua has been trying to convince himself that his relationship with Akane is a lie.
If he repeats it enough, if he makes his every action about using Akane, then it will be easier for him to let go of her — even when that becomes the last thing he wants to do.
This all comes to a head in Chapter 98, where we see Aqua cutting ties with Akane to keep her safe. This was the perfect time to use Akane, for real this time — but "using" Akane has become a lie that he can't keep up any longer.
Akane has become too important to him. So important in fact, that leaving her side marks the moment he makes a wrong turn and gives himself into the darkness of his revenge.
TL;DR Aqua did want to use Akane, but he never gets around to it. He comes to rely on her emotional support and feels so guilty for it that he sees that as "using" her. Ironically, by the time Akane becomes the perfect "tool" for him to use in his quest for revenge, she matters too much to him and he lets her go to keep her safe. In fact, Akane only makes herself "useful" to him by pure chance! lol

Rejoice, ye! I've listened to the new Riddler: Secrets in the Dark and can confirm that Hasan Minhaj continues to deliver a delightfully engaging performance as the Riddler. (You can tell he did a good job because I'm posting art again!)

Noonwraith / Południca
This one is really me seeing a frame in grains 2nd session of Scar standing in the wheat right after he was killed, waiting for his timer to go down and my slavic brain going brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
(Mini explanation for non slavs: Południca (referred to in English as "Lady Midday", "Noonwraith" or "Noon Witch") is a slavic demon, which appears in the wheat fields during noon time. They usually carry either a scythe or shears. Noonwraiths stop men in the fields and ask them difficult questions, if the person answers them wrong or tries to change the subject, they cut his head off. Very often those demons are young women who died tragically before, during or short after their wedding (also its my favourite slavic demon, love them)

Do you ever think about how Fitz treats Beloved like his manic pixie dream girl and they tend to come in conflict when he’s too human and has needs and feelings of his own? And he honestly does the same thing with Molly only he never really lets her break out of that mold?
#realm of the elderlings#rote#fitzchivalry farseer#the fool#fitzloved#molly chandler#I totally understand why he’s like that#he lost his mother young and thus lacked that unconditional love and support#and he is low on emotional intelligence and doesn’t know how to have healthy relationships#but it is very limiting for everyone involved#especially with molly because he never takes her off that pedestal and engages her as a fully realized person
