Like last year, I opted to do a redraw of an old drawing from 2020; a companion piece to my previous drawing, a redraw from 2019. Night Watch is a good context to revisit the past and look at how I've evolved.

It's the 25th of May. Here's to Truth, Justice, Freedom, Reasonably Priced Love and A Hardboiled Egg.

Still not ovet the fact that Havelock Vetinari wear the lilac every year e nobody ask him why.

And now I feel sorry for him, because I realized how he must feels knowing that he will always be an outsider.

i caught the bbc radio drama of ttis one last spring, wow. realizing this is where lilac day comes from, right before my lilacs bloomed. all of it. wow.

I am inconsolable.

Because this is the whole thing, isn't it? Sam Vimes wants to be back in his own present, with his wife and his Watch and his world, but he can't yet. He can't just let this play out and abandon it, because that would mean people died on his watch (heh). And if he made that call... well. He wouldn't be Sam Vimes anymore.

He has to do this. He has to do the job that's in front of him. And I haven't read this book before, so I don't know how it all turns out, and neither does he, anymore, but this integrity, this factory default setting of Sam Vimes to care about people and fight for them... I just get so emotional when Pratchett lays bare his thesis statement or the fundamental essence of his characters... I don't even have an analytical point here I'm just Feeling a Lot

katsuki bakugo was a private, not secret, type of guy.

though it came as a surprise to many, he never hid that he had a girlfriend. he just chose not to speak of you, unless prompted, which resulted in whoever asked about you being surprised at how he seemed to forgo his hard exterior when speaking of you.

you were his lock screen photo, in fact every wallpaper included you in it. couple photos of you two together and candid ones he'd take of you randomly. a polaroid picture of you with a small 'i love you!' written by you with sharpie on the white frame sat nicely in the clear case of his phone.

you were in the heart-shaped locket he'd keep on him at all times in the pockets of his outfits. he'd developed a habit of running his finger along the groves of the chain, opening it and raising it out just enough for him to see the photo, then safely putting it away.

your initials were in the laces of his shoes, your first letter next to his. the back of his favorite pair had an embroidered heart with your initials encased in a heart.

he was a private man. that's why his fans were so shocked when he had dropped two bombs on them all at once.

first, with a simple post of your hand in his, manicured with the colors of his hero outfit, with a noticeably large diamond adorning your finger.

but when he had let it slip that you two were expecting a baby in a t.v interview, nobody expected that he'd stay relaxed instead of being annoyed.

and not even you knew that instead of face- palming at his slip up, cursing or walking off set, that he'd proudly show the ultrasound. the one he'd cut up in a perfect small heart so it could fit into the other slot of the locket he adored so much.

how he decided to wear his heart out on his sleeve, just for you.

Reblogging for Lilac Day.

Because it’s the Glorious 25th, I am of course thinking of Sam Vimes today. 

And the thing about Vimes as a hero is that he’s so extreme in personality, but also so deeply relatable. 

Carrot, for example, (and of course it’s not an accident that Carrot is there as comparison) is your typical fantasy hero.  And he’s not relatable at all.  He’s Good in a way that most people will never be, can never be.  There’s something God-touched about his goodness.  And his goodness isn’t…super effective.  I mean, it is a little.  But no, who is it that really creates and continues the sweeping change of Discworld, over and over again?  It’s Sam Vimes.

Sam Vimes, who spent most of his life drunk and in a gutter.  Who burnt out from his unfair job, unjust world, and unappreciated caring and gave up.  For YEARS AND YEARS he gave up. 

Until he finally met a situation that was so intense it forced him to care again.

And lord, that is so COMFORTING.  That you can fuck up your whole life for a couple decades and then still answer the call when it comes.  Save the day and push for changes.  Be the sand in the gears of industry, fight impossible odds and win over and over, while complaining about having to do it the whole time. 

Vimes as we mostly know him is a character our world desperately needed.  Someone who keeps pushing and pushing against overwhelming injustice, even when it seems like the powers that be are stacked so high against you. 

But also how much more powerful to say “this character was once a total waste of space.”  He was ground down by daily life and constant injustice.  But he didn’t stay that way forever.

And god if that’s not inspirational as fuck.

⚔✊All the little angels, rise up, rise up...

This is a redraw of a very old piece, because Vimes deserves better than 2019-me's art skills.

That is not to say I look down on the original, I still love it, and it was one of my best drawings at the time. This redraw is a tribute to the Treacle Mine Road Revolution, to Pratchett's writing, to its impact on my life, to little-me, and to the passage of time.
