Why some characters are called by their lastname?

I didn't really think I had to post an info page about this, but since there has been some confusion around this, here it is.

So as you watch anime you learn that in Japanese culture, people don't usually call you by your first name. Usually you will be called by your last name and at the end of it they will add an honorific.

And before we get to all the different honorifics, I like to add that my character, Luna was born and raised in Japan, which mean she follows the the tradition of calling others by their last name. Some characters she is closer to, like Bakugo and Midoriya, which means she calls them by their nicknames, Kaachan and Izuchan.

While Todoroki Shoto is still on a learning-to-know-basis, she will call him by his last name, same thing with others in UA or in Japan.

Basically, the way she calls someone shows how close she is to the person or how much she respects the person.

When it comes to her non-japanes classmates, because she is in the international hero course, she will call them the way her classmates have told her to call them.

Now to the honorifics; There are a lot of different honorifics but here are the most common ones:

San (さん) = Mr. / Ms: Adults of equal status, informally and formally

Sama (様、さま) = Sir / Ma'am: Dear customer (o-kyaku-sama), Ladies and Gentlemen (mina-sama), Your Honor (judges), Your Lordship/Your Ladyship (judges of higher courts), Your Grace / Your Reverend / Your Eminence / Your Holiness (religious authorities) Your Omnipotence (deities)People of higher status (including deities, guests, customers)

Kun (君【くん】): Kun is a semi-formal title for a man—primarily men younger or the same age as the speaker.

Chan (ちゃん) = Little: Most frequently used for girls and small children, close friends, or lovers. Occasionally may be used to refer to a boy, but in most situations would be inappropriate.

Tan (たん) = Lil...Babies

Senpai (先輩、せんぱい) = Senior: Senior colleague and student or classmate

Sensei (先生、せんせい) = Teacher / Master (in the sense of "master and disciple") / Doctor / Professor: Used to refer to teachers as well as people who are experts in their respective fields, whether doctors, artists or lawyers.

Hakase (博士、はかせ) = Doctor or PhD: Persons with very high academic expertise

Heika (陛下、へいか) = Your Majesty: Emperor, Empress, Empress Dowager or Grand Empress Dowager

Denka (殿下、でんか)Your Imperial Highness: Princes and princesses of the Japanese Imperial Family

Fun Fact About Sekizan !

The lil keychain that Sekizan has on his phone exists in real life! I honestly thought it was some fictional mascot character that Amase-sensei made up but nope. its real! They don't have a specific name but they're usually called ermine keychains

You can just search up オコジョ キーホルダー (okojo keyholder) or オコジョ お土産 (okojo omamori/souvenir) if you wanna google it. Okojo just means ermine.

For the history on them, they're a sort of a pop culture/nostalgia item for schoolgirls in the 90s-00s. You usually see them at souvenir shops (especially ones around temples). The different colors symbolize different wishes or luck that you want.

In the anime only, the ermine keychain doesn't have a specific color. The orb itself is pink but there is no corresponding pink fur which it is supposed to have. Just by the fur color, white would mean the keychain is for happiness. If we are considering the pink orb, it would relate to some kind of love/falling in love charm...

Anyways.

In the manga (the beginning of chapter 74), you can see the charm has dark-colored fur. While the monochrome of the manga doesn't explicitly imply that it is a certain color, it IS a very dark tone. Some of the colors it could be are purple, dark blue, grey, black, or green.

Purple is for Victory

Dark Blue is for Self Confidence and Courage

Grey is for Strong Luck (as in alotta luck)

Black is for Sucess

Green is for Health

I just noticed that the orb on his' is a lighter color than the fur...meaning its most likely the grey one. BUT!

★新曲のコンセプト、制作、レコーディングについて教しえてください。

この曲では、まずインストルメンタルから始めました。ドラムのプログラミングそれに合わせてギターやベースのパートを書きます。最初は歌詞はありませんでしたが、「Discolor」という言葉だけが頭の中に浮かんでいました。なぜその言葉が潜在意識に浮かんでいるのか、それが私にとって何を意味するのかを考えました。数日間歌詞を書いたり書き直したりしているうちに、「I won't quit even if I'm discolored（変色しても諦めない）」というフレーズが浮かびました。この曲は、自己不信に直面したときに希望を見つけること、そして自分自身の道を辿ることがどれほど困難であってもそれに従うことについての歌です。

★作品作りどのようにして行われますか？

私の創造的なプロセスは非常に散漫です。なぜ何かを作りたいのかはあまり分かりません。ただそれは痒い所に手が届くような感覚。音楽的には、通常はコンピュータ上でアイデアのインストゥルメンタルを作り始めます。しかし、詩を書いたり、映像を作ったり、服を作ったりスプレーを吹いたり、すべては同じ源から生まれています。ただ自分自身に対して正直であることを心がけています。

★新曲「Discolor」のMusicVideoについて教えてください

ロンドン出身の親友であるSoren Harrisonと一緒にビデオを作りました。数か月前、彼��ニューヨークに来ると話していたので一緒に作品を作りたいと思いました。私は彼の作品のファンであり、4年以上も前から彼の仕事に魅了されています。Sorenがニューヨークに到着する前日に曲を完成させ、翌日にビデオを撮影しました。　　ほぼ即興で決めて街のお気に入りのスポットを巡りました。その中には、私にとってのニューヨーク最初の思い出の場所である自然史博物館やセントラルパークなどもあります。私には予算はありませんでしたが彼が私と一緒にビデオを作ることに快く協力してくれたことにとても感謝しています。彼��普段、より大きな予算でビデオを制作していますが、私と一緒にDIYで制作ができたこと、それは愛です。

ニューヨークの創造的な人々は常に互いに出会っています。みんながお互いを知っているか、友人の友人を知っているような感じがします。ニューヨークで活躍しているアーティストたちと仲良くしているけれど、特定のシーンに所属しているとは感じません。私はバンドでもなく、電子音楽のアーティストでもありません。その中間にいます。また、アジア系アメリカ人のアーティストでもありますが、それはアメリカで最も多様な都市でも珍しいことです。でも、私は慣れてきた感覚なので、それで構いません。新しいアイデアが毎日交換されている都市に住めていることにただただ幸せです。

★聴いている日本のアーティストはいますか？

たくさんの日本の音楽を聴いています。最近は、新しいCruyffのアルバムがとても好きです。

SATOHが大好きです！彼らは私にとってとてもクールです。どうやって知り合ったかは覚えていませんが、多分lil soft tennisを通じてだったと思います。彼らの音楽がどれだけ本物に感じるか、私は大ファンです。最近、LINNA FIGGとはビデオ通話をしましたが、彼の英語の上手さに驚きました！私は本当は日本語を学びたいと思っていますが、東京では多くの人が英語を話すので便利です。今年の後半には一緒に東京でショーをする予定です。

★Please tell me about the concept, production and recording of the new single .

Thank you! I'm so happy it resonates with you. For this song, I started with the instrumental. I usually start with programming the drums on my computer and then write the guitar/bass parts over that. I didn't have any lyrics at first but I had just the word, "Discolor". I thought hard about why that word was floating around in my subconscious -- what it means to me. After a few days of writing and re-writing the lyrics, I wrote the line "I won't quit even if I'm discolored". To me, the song is about finding hope in the face of self-doubt. It's also about following your own path, as challenging as that may be.

★what does your creative process ?

My creative process is so scattered. I never really know why I want to make something. It just feels like an itch that I need to scratch. Musically, it usually starts with making an instrumental idea on my computer. But I also write poetry, make visuals, sometimes make clothes or spraypaint-- it all comes from the same place. I just try my best to be honest with what I'm doing.

★Can you tell me about your new music video?

I made the video with my good friend Soren Harrison, who's from London. A few months ago he told me he was going to be in New York. I knew I wanted to make a video with him because I've been a fan of his work for over 4 years now. I actually finished the song the day before he flew into New York and then we shot the video the day after. It was all so spontaneous, just going around my favorite spots in the city. Some of them are places where my first memories were formed like the Natural History Museum and Central Park. As with pretty much everything I do, there was no budget. I'm so grateful he was willing to DIY it with me because he usually makes videos with way bigger budgets. That's love.

★who are your musical influences?

I have too many to name but a few of my favorite artists are The Cribs, Bill Evans, Mazzy Star, Ride, The Replacements, and My Bloody Valentine.

Growing up though it was Oasis, Blink-182, The Strokes, probably The 1975 too.

★can you tell me about your personal history?

My mom is from Vietnam, my dad is from China. Right after they had my brother Grey (Push Ups), they moved to NYC for school where I was born. Our family moved around a lot when Grey and I were growing up. I grew up split between NYC, Portland, Oregon, Shanghai, and Orange County, California. Somehow we always turned to music to make sense of our changing world. 6 years ago, I moved back to NYC for school and started releasing music as "Harry Teardrop". I'm still figuring out my life with each new day but I just feel grateful to be here on this earth.

★how did you start your music career?

I started playing drums when I was 5 years old. Music has been around as long as I can remember. I started writing songs when I was 11 or 12 and then learned how to produce on Garageband when I was in high school, releasing really shitty demos on Soundcloud. I put out my first song as "Harry Teardrop", "Chinatown" when I was 18 and even though I barely recognize the person I was back then, it led me to foolishly believe I could make a real career out of my music. I'm glad it did, despite the challenges that come with it. If I had never put myself out there, I would never be connecting with you, my new friend in Tokyo!

★how do you feel about the scenes around you ?

Do you have any connections with other bands?

Creative people in New York are always bumping into each other. I feel like everyone knows each other or knows a friend of a friend. Even though I'm friendly with so many artists coming out of New York right now, I don't feel like I'm part of any particular scene. I'm not a band, nor am I an electronic artist. I'm somewhere in between. I'm also an Asian American artist which is rare, even in the most diverse city in America. That's how I've been my whole life though so I'm used to that feeling. I'm just happy I get to live in a city where new ideas are being exchanged every day.

★Are there any Japanese artists you listen to ?

Yes! I listen to a lot of Japanese music. Most recently, I've been really loving that new Cruyff album. Some of my favorite Japanese artists are Supercar, ART-SCHOOL, Number Girl, m-flo, Strawberry Machine, Quruli, Daisuke Miyatani, and Rei Harakami.

★You and SATOH(LINNA FIGG/Kyazm) follow on Instagram each other. How did you get to know each other?

I love SATOH! They're so cool to me. I don't remember how we found each other, maybe through lil soft tennis. But I'm a big fan of how genuine their music feels. Linna figg and I had a facetime call recently, I was surprised by how good his English is! I really want to learn Japanese but it's convenient that a lot of people in Tokyo speak English. We're working on playing a show together in Tokyo later this year. I'm just trying to find a sponsor to fly me out there, so if you know of any brands that would be interested, let me know!

★Are there any other Japanese musicians you are close with?

I've never met any of them in person but I know DYGL, SATOH, Lil Soft Tennis / Heaven, and JUBEE, to name a few. I know once I go out there I'll make so many friends. Just the thought is so exciting to me. I really want to DJ a party while I'm out there too.

★What are your current/dream goals for the upcoming ?

My main goal for 2023 is to release my debut album "Inbetween Webs" in the fall accompanied by memorable visuals. I also want to play shows in London and Tokyo. In the grand scheme of things though, I just want to inspire people, have my own house with huge windows, and have a cat, a wife, maybe kids someday. Until then, I'll take every win I can get.

★ The appeal of your music is a hot topic in Japan, and you have many passionate fans. Do you have a message for your Japanese fans?

That's so crazy to me! Such a big part of music is the cultural identity aspect. Sometimes I feel more understood by people in Japan than even here in the US because I'm Asian so they can see me for who I am. My mom was also an English teacher in Japan in the 90s, so I grew up with a love for Japanese culture. That love has only grown as I've gotten older and discovered my favorite artists from there. I can't wait to come out there and party my brains out hahaha.

So this is Diane "Floyd" Floyener, the ghost girl I mentioned in my post about SMG6 Kirby's friends, and that script post introducing Digi-Blade to Lil Coding.

She's twelve, dead, and has depression and a bit of anxiety. Also for some reason her main Ghost Thing is that she eats colors by draining them out of whatever object she touches, though she can control it most of the time. She can technically eat food normally, it just doesn't actually benefit her because she's dead. Her favorite flavor is yellow.

Heya, this might be a bit of a big ask, but I noticed you mentioned in a few posts that you’re learning Japanese. Seiji, Yuki and Mont have the occasional voice line (from what I’ve seen, most of them are in their stat menus, they say something when you go to inspect their character models, and I think they speak when they’re pulled in the gatcha), and I was wondering if you’d be able to translate them? I’m a lil obsessed with them ngl I love their designs and I’d love to know what they say.

It’s totally chill if I’m asking too much, just figured I’d shoot my shot. Your blog is a godsend btw, it’s awesome to have everything we know so far archived in one convenient and trustworthy place 💕💕

To be honest as soon as I read this ask I went to go see if I could datamine the voice lines haha, since that seemed like the easiest way to get them all, but unfortunately I'm not super experienced in datamining and can't quite figure out where those are/how to extract them, so digging through videos I guess it is! (If anyone reading this has any advice for datamining audio, any help/pointers are super appreciated!)

Anyway, let's see what I can do here; I'll format this as what I think I hear in Japanese first, then what I think that translates to (and do take this with a grain of salt, as I am still learning Japanese haha!).

Starting with this video- Yuki appears first at ~2:12.

わたしのしは、おみせします！-> "I'll show you my work!" (honestly, it could be a lot of things besides "work", but that seems the most likely, especially with how little we know)

Seiji's right after her...

ともだち...　はい。きみとなら、よろこんでともでいたいです。-> "Friends... yes. If it's with you, I'd be glad to be friends." (I'm not 100% sure on the grammar here, but I'm pretty sure this is the basic idea at least)

And then Mont...

はあ...　りらっくす、りらっくす...　きんちょでしぱいしたら、すべてだいがしょ。-> *sigh* "Relax, relax... if recent work made you tired, everything's alright." (okay honestly this one gave me the most trouble by far. the sigh and "relax, relax" are definitely correct, but I kind of leaned on google translate + my dictionary to help me with this one, so take it with some extra salt. for the record, google translate turns it into "Everything's fine if you're tired." it's also possible the last bit is しよ instead of しょ, in which case google translates it as "Everything's okay if you're kind." not super sure with this one, sorry!)

Next up, the gacha pulls. Yuki's first again!

(going to be honest. no idea what the second sentence is. not getting anything that makes sense from my dictionary and even google translate gives up on it haha. it's possible I'm mishearing it due to the sound effect?)

Um. This video then barely lets Mont's line play, so I'm not sure if part of it gets cut off. If you know a better one that definitely lets the whole line play, please send it my way haha!

みんあさんとみると、わたしもでつよくなた -> "When I see everyone, it makes me stronger too!" (or... something to that effect?)

And then Seiji...

これに？しらとりせいじともうします。よろしくおねがいします。-> (okay I'll be honest I cannot hear one of the words in this one thanks to the sound effect haha. the rest after the ? is "My name is Shiratori Seiji. I look forward to working with you", I'm just not sure how the first bit connects to it without that word in the middle)

Not strictly what you asked for, but I'll also do what I can of their battle lines/in-Metaverse next, since it's conveniently accessible...

Starting with Yuki at ~3:00!

Baton pass- おまかせを -> "Leave it to me."

One more/hitting a weakness- しんぱんごください -> (seems to be along the lines of "Please take care", but not sure exactly how that applies in this context? For sure it's "please" something at least)

Summoning Persona at ~19:08- いっしょにいきます！-> "Let's go together!", ~19:57- しめます！-> "Closing it!" (honestly this could be a couple things. "closing it" barely makes sense but I'm not sure which translation it'd be instead??)

Hitting a weakness right after that- せてくす！-> "Let's go!" (google translated, since I don't recognize... anything about this phrase tbh, so grain of salt here)

Genuinely no idea what she says when she attacks the shadow with a physical attack, haha, sorry!

Gun attack- もくひょのこくにん、できます！-> (aaanother one I'm not sure how to translate. mostly typing this out in case anyone who sees this is able to weigh in at all hah)

Her all out attack line and finisher are also very hard to hear in this video tbh, but I think I can at least make out the word たしきりました, which google translates as "That was great!" so take that as you will.

In the other video her all out attack line is more audible at ~20:11- みんあここに、かえまくです！-> (another one I'm leaning on google for, it gives "Everyone is here to return!". It's definitely "Everyone is here" something, just not sure what the second part of the sentence means.)

Post battle, ~15:02- こんばんはおろかさにうすびつきます。-> "This evening we will start to make the foolishness disappear." (REALLY guessing with this one. It could start with "This evening" or just "good evening", and I think "foolishness" is correct, but the ending of the sentence is sort of throwing me off tbh)

Next is Seiji... who doesn't seem to talk a lot in combat. Could be they're still recording his voice lines, or maybe it's something to do with his character where he doesn't talk a lot in fights?

Physical attack- そこです！-> "There!"

One more, ~46:21- おわりにします。-> "I'll end this." (might just be おわり, which'd just be "The end"; can't tell if I'm hallucinating more to the sentence underneath the Persona summoning sound effect haha?)

Spotting a chest, ~52:40- そうぞういじょうです？-> "Am I imagining some strangeness?" (kind of going out on a limb with this one tbh)

Locked door (or maybe a delayed post-battle line?), right after that- じゅうじつしたいいちにちでした。それではみんなさ、ぼくはこえで。-> "It was a fulfilling day. Well everyone, that's my opinion." (another one where I'm reeaally guessing here, so take it as you will)

Definitely a post-battle line, 1:02:22- きょうもはりきていけましょ... -> "Let's keep going today..." (this is honestly just the google translate bc I'm not sure. definitely "Let's [something] today..." at least? as an aside, he's given kind of the downcast portrait with this line, and the chinese subtitle ends it with an ellipsis, so sort of a weird tone here? is it supposed to be reluctant? or disappointed the battle was easy, maybe??)

Finding a safe room ~54:06- あぶないですね？[きょうことぱ]をすすめしません。-> "Isn't it risky? I do not recommend [???]." (honestly this sentence doesn't seem to make sense in context to me haha, and it's making it very hard to figure out what that word in brackets is. I'm not sure if I'm even hearing it right? It might be the idea is he's pointing out it's risky to keep going without stopping at the safe room, idk?)

Leaving safe room (?), right after- ろっくされていますね？るーとをへんこうしましょう。"It's been locked, huh? Let's change our route."

Can't hear the all out attack finisher in the video very well, unfortunately.

All out attack finisher in the other video, ~1:23:32- ぜんりょくをつくしました。-> "I put forth every effort."/"I did my best."

Entering an area in the Palace ~1:31:05- かぜをかんじます。[かくしつろ]がここに。-> "I feel a breeze. [???] is here." (another one where I'm having trouble making sense of the word. this would be easier if we at least had Japanese subtitles, hah).

And last is Mont, who doesn't appear in that other gameplay video I linked like the other two do (I feel like I haven't seen her in gameplay videos for P5X as much in general?), so I just have the shorter video to go off of.

Baton pass- じゅうびOK -> "Preparations are okay." (as in like, "Preparations are ready", or to extrapolate further, "I'm prepared"? I think I'm hearing this one right (OK is a loanword used in Japanese, and Mont used the english word "relax" in a line I listed earlier too))

I can't hear her line for the One More in the video- honestly even with the music overlay, it kind of sounds like everyone's voices are quieter when they summon their Persona in general? Maybe that's just me.

Gun attack- きめるは？く -> (something about deciding. In the video she fires right on the ?, so I can't quite figure out the word)

Can't hear her line well when she summons her Persona, or hits its weakness, either.

All out attack- わたしのきみつけい[ぶる]うけてみなさい！-> (something like "Observe/experience my [something]!", I'm just not entirely sure what it is, especially since I'm not sure I'm hearing the part in brackets right.)

The all out attack finisher I can actually kind of hear, but I can't figure out what sounds she's saying exactly, and honestly I've listened to it like 15+ times now so I think if I hear it much more I might lose it, haha

Sorry, this is maybe a little underwhelming since there's a lot I couldn't really translate! I also don't know a video off the top of my head that has any of their lines in the stat menus, so sorry I didn't really get to that either.
