 It would sound fun if my world was full of man made lakes so that pretty much all the roads are actually waterways. However I'm wondering where all the water and ground is from and how they create all that? Basically I just want to see the world full of boats instead of cars getting from place to place. I don't mean like single tiny cities like Venice that only works because it's on a lagoon but across the entire world basically. Large busy cities everywhere where the main transportation are boats.

Tex: How big are your lakes? Can anything get bigger than that? We have oodles of lakes on earth, but also significantly larger seas and oceans due to plate tectonics. Is it important to you that the only bodies of waters are lakes across the entirety of the planet, or will a continent or two suffice for the purposes of your worldbuilding? It’s certainly feasible to have your major transportation be via boats, but they will also be heavily dependent upon a consistent amount of water in their area, which will vary based on season and periodic droughts and floods.

Utuabzu: Historically, canals are pretty common. A lot more so than many assume. Prior to the widespread adoption of the steam locomotive and railroads, the most efficient way to transport goods and people in bulk was by water, which is why older cities in Europe and many other places are often criss-crossed by canals, or once were. Even early industrial cities like Birmingham were heavily reliant on canals for bulk transport.

These canals weren’t just intra-city affairs either. The 17th Century Canal du Midi forms a complex with some other waterways that allows boat traffic across France from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, while the Grand Canal in China is a system stretching over 1700km, with the oldest segments built in the 5th Century BCE, and the system considered to have been completed in 609CE. It is still in use as a major piece of transportation infrastructure.

Canals often also served multiple purposes, such as the canals of Bangkok which also served to drain the swampy marshland the city was built on and irrigate farmland, or the Sanitary and Ship Canal in Chicago, which reversed the flow of the lower Chicago River so that it flowed into the Mississippi river system rather than Lake Michigan, allowing shipping to pass directly between the Mississippi river system and the Great Lakes, and diverting the city’s sewerage away from the lake, where it sourced its drinking water.

Prior to the mid-late 19th Century, most urban areas with suitable geography would fill your needs. The major obstacle is going to be that canals just aren’t very practical in hilly or mountainous terrain, or in desert environments with low precipitation and high evaporation. Both can be worked around - uneven terrain can be traversed with the use of locks, and deserts with either sufficiently high water inflow or by roofing the canal over or building it more like a qanat - but there does need to be a good reason for people to bother doing so. At a certain point it becomes much more cost/effort effective to simply walk.

So, unless your world is fairly flat and pretty damp - or the parts of it relevant to your story at least - there’s going to be places where canals don’t really make sense as transportation infrastructure. But hey, now you’ve got an obstacle you can throw at your characters, so it’s not all bad.

Addy: Is the world heavily aquatic and close to sea level? If not, what advantage is there to using boats? Canals are very expensive to build and offer few benefits for everyday travel (trade is a different story, just look at the Erie Canal). I understand that you’re going for an aesthetic, and you can absolutely do that, but what’s the equivalent of a bus? And boats are fairly slow, being real. Cars also aren’t mandatory, either - plenty of cities are walkable.

Just something to think about.

Oh boy. Here goes... Shingeki no Kyojin Final chapter (139) thoughts and analysis ✰

Well, where do I even begin to accumulate my thoughts on the final chapter of Shingeki no Kyojin? Even after some time to reflect and read the chapter many times, over and over - I’m still going to struggle to form this analysis. But, alas I shall try my best despite this.

I appreciate anyone who takes the time to read this and understand my own views of the final chapter. Proceed with caution - ⚠️ spoilers ahead ⚠️

This chapter and ending overall has left me with a love/hate relationship with the overall tale in full. I’d even go as far as saying it has tainted my view slightly of the entire series in one way or another and I will never look at it the same way I did - as much as I wish I could. My reasoning for the love/hate relationship I have will come, but, I want to start off by saying that despite it’s ending I will always appreciate this story and Isayama for his work, even if I myself don’t approve of his steering towards the ending.

It is just like I said in my theory, the thing we all need to recognise with this story is that the characters we love and have cherished, were never going to get exactly what they desired and if anything this chapter is a clear indication of that fact. It has been a story that was paved for a bitter, somewhat ‘bittersweet’ ending (yes, I hoped it wouldn’t be in the form of ‘that’, but it was). It is just as Mikasa said - “The world is cruel and merciless, but it is also beautiful”. This tale became the typical embodiment of humanity and how ruthless it can be.

Again, like I said in my theory, it was heavily foreshadowed that Eren was playing devil’s advocate and might have to sacrifice his freedom in this life to save the ones who meant the most to him. We heard hints in OST’s such as My War, Red Swan, Vogel Im Kafig, among others…

“Angel playing disguise with Devil’s face”

“I’ll cry for you in a dream”

“All of my kingdom, for your return, I’d let it burn!”

“Spread your wings, which are dreaded in blood”

“And eternity as you, fly to heaven”

“Like a fallen angel”

“Looking down from above I feel awful”

“Every living being dies someday, whether we are ready to die or not”

“Is that the angel who flew down from the twilight sky?”

“Is that the devil who crawled out from the crevice?”

“Tears, anger, compassion, cruelty, peace, chaos, faith, betrayal.”

It was foreshadowed, all of those things in the last example is humanity in a nutshell. The use of birds to symbolise the dead was shown on multiple occasions. Hell, even in the Levi ova, his friends are shown as 2 birds above him as he continues forward. It didn’t shock me that Eren’s soul was represented or “reincarnated” in the form of a bird - simply because birds are the most free creatures on our planet, they can fly over land, sea and maintain the air around them. Realistically, we should’ve analysed the birds presence more (it was even implied in the opening trailer for season 4. Falco awoke to a bird flying above him, we saw the bird present many times in even past seasons and don’t get me started on how many times it was present in the manga). Our Angel was Eren. He was a fallen angel - a slave to the story and what it means to be human, to feel deeply and make sacrifices. He was never a monster, just a pawn in a wicked game.

For a split moment of initial shock, I let the “judging a book by its cover” ideal kick in. After calming down and having access to proper translations, again I can’t say I love this ending or hate it - it has the bittersweet notion that was intended, but it was also lukewarm. It is not perfect by any means, there are some plot holes and loose ends that could have been tied up by extension. However, Isayama maybe intended for it to remain open for interpretation. Something of which, I’ll reveal what I personally took from the ending.

One thing I am surely certain of, is that I can hold my hands above my head and say this chapter 100% embodied my love for my favourite character - Eren Jaeger. He had such a tragic outcome, he did it all for his friends and loved ones. He was never free, not in life and partially not in death. He was a broken child, in a broken world with a broken fate of shouldering mass amounts of responsibility with no idea of how to change or control the past, present and future. To witness your best friend talking of all the things he was going to see, yet knowing you wouldn’t be there to see it yourself. To know the girl who was there for him forever and always, could never be his to cherish. He had no freedom to do so. To live the life he wanted to, he would have died anyway. If he had ran off with Mikasa, he would have damned his friends. The life he wanted was not feasible, therefore he chose to sacrifice his desires so his friends could live long lives, unlike the one he was damned to. He was a character who was torn along all sides of the coin. Torn between his desires, his duty and his self - all while experiencing memories from all angles. He was not a monster or a psychopath and I won’t let others spit on his name due to their lack of analysis and empathy. He is human. He is allowed to feel. He isn’t pathetic for wanting to live, for wanting to be with his friends or the girl he loves. He is 19. Can you really say you wouldn’t feel the same? It is natural to be frustrated at your life being ripped from under your feet at such a young age. He was damned if he did, damned if he didn’t. Look at his face in paths when he talks with Armin, he is devastated and he had no solution.

However, I do believe he will be reunited with his friends once more. After all, the scouts were reunited in death, so why shouldn’t he? His friends will not live in vain, his sacrifice will mean something. They will live their life to the fullest and find peace in life and then in death - they have Eren to thank for that. Another misconception I want to pick out of the fandom is that they did not condone genocide, they did not thank Eren for ridding the population of 80%. Armin states it as an “error”. What they did do, was acknowledge Eren’s sacrifice for them to live and that they understood it’s not what he wanted himself, but that due to unseen forces. - did he really have a choice? It is not by any means perfect, but it gives them freedom to live out with the walls - was this not Eren’s dream? To be free, not confined within the walls by Titans. He did exterminate all titans, that is one goal Eren Jaeger accomplished. We don’t know the full extent of the power of the attack titan or the founding titan, this is one of the open plot holes. Eren himself explains this, he himself has no clue and his head is a mess - is it any shock that his head is a mess? People would go crazy over less. He was a pawn in a story with no happy ending. At least not for him.

Even in the bird reincarnation theory, I hope he is happy and free. Free to roam the skies, perch upon the tallest mountains, titter along the grass banks of the world and watch over his comrades, his friends, the ones he loves deeply… The tragic protagonist I will always remember. (Especially as one who was done so dirty by his author)

There was so many routes this manga could have taken, fan theories proved this and I do think the ending could have been executed better. We were not getting a happy ending, it is not happy by all means. Those characters left have to live in the aftermath, aware of their friends sacrifice and all he had to put himself through for them to live the lives they themselves desired. My favourite quote will always be:

“Don’t pity the dead. Pity the living”

Mikasa lost her family in more ways than one, she has to live a life where she didn’t get the one person she desired more than anything, but I believe she will move on and Eren will be by her side the entire time until they are reunited in death. Levi is the same, he lost everyone and whoever his love may have been - Erwin, Hanji, Petra (who knows). Either way, he didn’t have those loved ones around in the end. But, he no longer has to fight for survival and can spend the remainder of his time resting until the day in the future he can be reunited with his comrades, friends and even kick Eren a big one, ruffle his hair, tell him its okay and tell him all the things he wanted to tell him like he said. Armin lost his best friend, he held the burden above his head that he himself killed Eren and not Mikasa. However, he has an abundance of friends, he has Annie and he can travel the world like he desired - like Mikasa, he will have Eren by his side for the remainder of his time.

Jean can meet the woman of his dreams and have the children like he desired, knowing that even in their silly quarrels - Eren was loyal to him always. Connie can have his mother back, his family and move on. Reiner can live, not die like he once desired and live on knowing of Eren’s sacrifice, that he wasn’t a monster himself. He is free from the curse, as is Annie, Pieck and Falco. The warriors have their families back. Gabi and Falco can be together unlike their comparisons, sad, but fitting. They are in Paradis, a place we never expected them to be in the end, advocating for change alongside Onyakapon looking after their elder, Levi, alongside them. On Eren’s death anniversary, it is implied they all return to his grave to be together, none of them are alone like we initially thought. Mikasa is not alone in Paradis since it is implied that Levi, Onyankapon, Gabi, Falco, Historia even… still live amidst the walls - I think it would be wasteful to assume such a strong character secludes herself after the love of her life’s death. She does not have to love another man, she can choose to live her life for herself, a long one alongside her friends. This manga has never necessarily needed to have love stories, they are implied, but not needed. For life itself is the embodiment of their freedom.

This above is the rosy way of looking at it and it’s what I personally will take from it. I overall think it is terrible writing and use of dialogue - there’s no denying it. I myself as a writer and artist would have done it differently. Isayama has created a manga with a tragic story that reveals the raw, tainted feeling of what it’s like to be human. We all want things, we all have desires…but we don’t always get them, no matter how hard we try, some will slip from our grasps. That is life, no matter the universe. Yes. But, I do think in ways Isayama did taint and obliterate Eren as a character. This I am disappointed in. It is a typical author ideal of damning his protagonist and the sad thing about being a stories protagonist - you risk being ruined due to being written so complex initially that the author loses sight of how to conclude your arc respectfully. I believe from what we have been shown, he would not have accepted his death that easily and would fight for another way. Although, I cannot blame him as I myself would have felt defeated, suicidal and depressed at learning everything he did after his contact with Historia at such a young age. Remember, how you are brought up in an already cruel world is key - he didn’t stand a chance. But alas, I still feel he would’ve fought. This Eren is not the Eren we saw the majority of the manga, but then again he did change and I feel so sorry that the Titan power had that effect on him.

This is the character development true Eren stans are enraged with. TATAKAE! Fight the attack titan, fight the founding titan, fight against your cruel fate - don’t succumb to defeat. There is always another way. I don’t accept this version of Eren, due to the development we saw built by Isayama of his character, I can’t. It leaves so many gaps among other plot reveals. I don’t see what was accomplished. Eren’s being, his life, was a ploy to keep the other characters we care about alive, but at what cost ? If I was Eren’s friend, I would go forward like he wanted me to, but I could never forget the burden he bared and what he had to go through and what he did to achieve that outcome for me. I would forever be sad. I would be living in a world much like this one, lacking in peace and serenity and above all is that not what we all desire in one way or another? He did not necessarily know the Dina titan would go for his mother, but he had to direct it away from Bertholdt since in the timeline it was not his time to die. Always remember the theory of time, one thing changed, drastically changes the outcome. He did not want civilians or people within Paradis to die, it became collateral damage and no one would be able to fight for some time because of the 80% notion. He gave them time to live, time to change things to the best of their abilities and experience all they possibly could. They became the ‘heroes’, but again, at what cost?

Now, to the plot holes and answers I feel needed to be present for the story to knit together in a better way. This will be less “paragraph” based and more pointed, since…well these things were not explained. Majority of potential foreshadowing was swept under the rug like it meant nothing to bring about the lukewarm feeling I was talking about.

The alien like hallucigenia, what exactly was its purpose? It’s reason for being? It disappeared and ceased to exist. No mention of how it came to be. Even Ymir just vanished. Everything ceased to exist and Eren himself couldn’t understand Ymir’s reasoning other than being able to witness love. This seemed to be cop out on Isayama’s part.

Historia’s pregnancy was heavily implied and emphasised on within the manga, making readers think it meant something (when a creator zones in on these things, its usually for further plot reveal) Her character development was destroyed and she deserved better. She sidelined herself and stayed away till the final moment where it is implied she and Armin will become the negotiators of a new world, all while housing tyrants (Jaegerists). Again a further implication of Shonen manga and its poor interpretation of women.

The conclusion to Ymir and Eren’s particular character arcs was shocking and this can’t be dismissed. We needed both their sides of things to explain more. It lacked real conclusion and didn’t match up to past events or character development. This chapter should have purely been an Eren POV with the ending moments of how the scouts moved on. Of course this couldn’t have been done in 1 chapter, hence the recognition that this manga needed ‘more’ and it wasn’t enough to tie it all together. Another flaw in Isayama’s writing and continuity.

The Ackermans? Don’t get me started. My theory again will entail my rage about this one. Did the Ackerman power cease to exist like the titan curse? What is their origin story? To imply the Ackerman blood concept in all its parallels and foreshadowing to not even have the 2 remaining characters from said bloodline talk about their shared experience in thorough detail is such an abysmal hole in plot. Especially with it being heavily emphasised throughout the entire manga.

I barely saw any signs of Eren being in love with Mikasa? If this was the case, then it should have been shown in the manga and emphasised like isayama did with many other things that eventually had no meaning. I always viewed their relationship as very toxic to both sides and needed amending. So for Eren to suddenly turn round and say he doesn’t want her to be with another man....I find this a very bad continuation and completely disregards how Eren has been the past 138 chapters. Why was it so hard for him to say these things even before he made contact with historia and unravelled it all? Was it the power of the attack titan preventing him?.... (below)

The attack titan and founding titan, explain how it works. Why does Eren himself not fully understand yet he embodies them? Why could he not have flipped the switch? Why could he not ask for help? Explanation is needed.

All the time loop links diminished to nothing other than Eren’s past, present and future…yet its implied in many characters even in their childhoods mentions of things they could not be aware of. How can it merely be coincidence?

I wholeheartedly believe that this was not the initial ending of Shingeki no Kyojin, specifically because I and a few others I’ve seen noticed the shift in the story around 10 or so chapters ago. It seemed to be going in the route of a few particular fan theories and then suddenly (quite drastically I’ll add) shifted into this ending. I can only theorise that Isayama changed his original ending along the way to please editors and readers in different ways. In interviews past, he has completely contradicted things he has said about the manga and its ending with what he has produced in the final chapter. When you look at it from a marketing point of view as a selling point, if Isayama had killed certain characters like “Levi” for example or left the ending dark as it possibly could have been (something I wouldn’t have put past yams to do) it would be bad from a marketing point given the likes of Levi is the targeted favourite of the series (even with being a side character) and editors would heavily warn him of this.

People are saying that it’s Isayama’s story and editors won’t have influence - you’d be heavily surprised how much the editing team can have influence, especially when a story of this magnitude becomes so popular. I do think in ways, Isayama gave up. As an artist even myself, its very abundantly clear when a fellow creative loses drive and how the concept of something becoming popular can influence you to become bored and look for a way out. Hence, the clear signs of the story coming out as rushed, its all there, the loss of continuity, the holes in plot and even though Isayama’s art can be inconsistently coherent - some parts of the past few chapters weren’t at the full potential we saw previously. We watched him get better to suddenly somehow revert? That to me seems like a creator who had just had enough and maybe in the end chose to veer off his original plan.

Alas! As I said, I will always love Shingeki no Kyojin despite its ending and loose ties, it holds a place in my heart and has been a favourite of mine since my school days. Being an adult now In her 20’s and experiencing the many troubles of what its like to be human and a creative can sympathise with the struggles and stress Isayama would have been under all these years as his manga gradually became the phenomenon it is now. As it is our favourite characters time to rest and move on, it is his also. Although the story is not where I and many others hoped it would go, I still thank him massively for giving me characters like Eren Jaeger, Levi Ackerman, Mikasa Ackerman, Armin Arlert… the list goes on. Thank you for embodying why Eren was my first and last favourite character. Goodbye Shingeki no Kyojin.

Sonic Adventure 2.5: Ωmegλ

Welcome to the end of the era, folks! As you can see from the credits above, though this one isn't quite as big or dramatic as Endgame, it's still a very important issue, with bombastic action that drives the story forward and changes the fate of the preboot world forever. Here, we reach the conclusion of not one but two different arcs that have dominated this era of the comic, so without further ado - let's do it to it!

Last issue, we discovered that Mobius is Earth, and that the Xorda are prepared to execute every living members of this planet as revenge for some random humans dissecting one of their ambassadors thousands of years ago. Seems like overkill, guys! Rotor, having overheard everything going on in the castle from his lab, has hastily developed a technological measure that should allow them to communicate directly with the Xorda in the form of a telepathic helmet. Sally volunteers herself as the one to contact them, believing that she can make a good argument based on her and Nicole's research, and puts on the helmet, suddenly finding herself in a bizarre space surrounded by surprised Xorda.

This reveal is even better than the last one! Yes, the Xorda's gene bombs inadvertently caused the DNA of ordinary Earth animals to be mixed with deconstructed human DNA, which only goes further to explain why Mobians are all so humanlike. With the Xorda still on their genocidal streak, Eggman contacts the king once again to lay out his new plan to drive them away - he wants Sonic to come to his base to use his super speed to power a giant mecha that has enough force to just punch the aliens clear out of this solar system. It's a good idea, and Eggman is being genuine (for once) about his desires to defeat the Xorda, but King Max knows that with the upper hand he's gained in negotiations, he can get something more out of this deal.

As Eggman angrily agrees, we travel back to the liminal space that is the afterlife, only to find Knuckles exiting the Chaos Force almost as soon as he's entered it, alarmed at having sensed danger to the entire planet. He demands answers from Aurora, wanting to know if it's possible for him to return, and she hesitates, clearly uncomfortable at the line of questioning. In Knothole, Sally rallies all the people fit to fight to be ready for anything in case Eggman's plan fails, and on Angel Island Locke similarly encourages the theocracy, the Legion, and even the dingoes to work together to muster up a fighting force. Sonic gets ready to head off to Eggman's base to power the robot, but Sally insists on coming along, saying that if Sonic falls in battle, her place is at his side until the end. And so, they arrive and both strap into the robot, which, powered by Sonic's super speed, puts up a fight against the Xorda spaceship currently hovering over Eggman's base in New Megaopolis.

Sally is delighted at their apparent success, but Eggman then shows his true colors by strapping Sonic into the seat, intending to use his power to fuel his robot until Sonic dies of starvation. However, his betrayal is quickly sidelined as a mysterious device drops into Mobius' Southern Tundra from orbit, and the Xorda once again telepathically contact everyone on the planet to explain their newest plan.

Really, Xorda, did you have to show your hand and reveal what your newest plan is? I mean, I do want it to fail as much as the next person, but if you wanted to ensure that it couldn't be stopped, then just… don't mention it to anyone? The Southern Tundra is literally Antarctica, a frozen wasteland where no one even lives apart from exiles like Nate Morgan (RIP). Even if Rotor or Eggman's instruments detected its presence on the continent, they wouldn't know what its purpose is just from looking at it, and might not be able to formulate a plan in time to stop it. But since the Xorda have so very kindly explained to everyone how the Quantum Dial works, Eggman reluctantly releases Sonic to pilot the Jaeger once more, intending to smash the Dial to bits with it. Meanwhile, in the afterlife, Knuckles continues to insist that he be allowed to come back to life to save his friends, and Athair supports him while Aurora desperately pleads with him to reconsider.

You know, maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I like the concept of Aurora as a deity. She's not omnipotent, and she's definitely not perfect. It's clear that due to her lofty position high above the mortal plane, she's so wrapped up in the enormity of the world's mysteries and the knowledge that can be gained thereof that she's kind of blind to the joys that ordinary people take in their mortal life on Mobius. And yet she's ultimately benevolent or at least benign, allowing people to make their own decisions regardless of what she feels they should do, and "lesser" beings such as Athair feel comfortable addressing her informally and generally being flippant if they feel like it. Back in the tundra, the world quickly finds out that some kind of invisible defensive grid surrounding the Dial prevents anything technological from getting close to it, causing Station Square's nuclear missiles to fall apart harmlessly before they hit it. And thus, every fighting fit being on the planet masses on the continent, ready for a final desperate assault for the fate of their planet.

Laser cannons erupt from the ground, firing at the attacking force and causing them to scatter. At the same time, Eggman's robot reaches the Dial, only to fall apart the same as the missiles, causing Sonic and Sally to fall out of it into the snow nearby. Nicole (who somehow didn't fall apart - maybe because she's not a weapon and thus wasn't targeted by the defensive grid?) takes this chance to run a quick analysis on the device, and Rotor, upon receiving her data, deduces that while the Dial isn't designed to stop moving once in motion, a sufficient counter-force would be enough to disintegrate its gears and halt its progression. Sonic suggests he could create that counter-force with his speed, but Nicole discourages this, as the resulting implosion of matter around the Dial would kill Sonic. She then gets another reading from the device, and discovers to her, Sally, and Sonic's horror that a quantum wave is about to expand out from the Dial, incinerating everything in a hundred mile radius. Sally and Sonic realize they're too late, and begin to say a last "I love you" to each other as the wave rushes toward them, but it suddenly, inexplicably dissipates just before it hits them, leaving them shocked and baffled. But what - or who - is responsible for this apparent miracle?

You guys didn't really think Rad Red would stay dead, did you? Nah man, this is a comic book! Welcome back to the mortal coil, buddy, we missed ya! The Dial's defenses have all been disabled by Knuckles' final burst of power, but the danger isn't over yet - the arm is still in motion, and with time quickly running out, only Rotor's counter-force suggestion seems feasible.

I'll admit, when I first read this issue I didn't see this coming at all. I'm not ashamed to say that I cried. Y'all already know I'm kind of a sucker for this pairing, and truly, this is far more in character than what we saw last issue. Sonic may not be sappy or romantic, but he is incredibly loving, even if he doesn't always openly show it. And it's always been clear, from the very first issue of the comic and every issue in between, that whatever problems they have, whatever evils might try to tear them apart, Sonic the Hedgehog truly, deeply loves Sally Acorn, and has ever since they were children. A final confession of love before a heroic sacrifice is just his style.

And so, he runs. He leaves without another word, not looking back, refusing to let himself be tempted to stay. Sally is left behind in tears as Sonic puts his plan into action, racing counter-clockwise around the Dial. He's saved the world so many times, and now, if he can push himself to his limits and pull it off once more, it will have all been worth it…

The Dial's gears grind to a halt, and the device implodes. Everyone stares out in shock at the resulting crater, wondering about Sonic's fate, until Sally approaches with the news they all feared.

Aranea waved him off and slumped down with a sigh. “You’ve been missing for a week, blondie.” She watched the way he blinked, and then tilted his head in a confused sort of way that left her chuckling because yeah, this was definitely the blondie she’d met with the Prince and his entourage.

“A week? But that—perhaps the temporal displacement is not entirely accurate?” Prompto mumbled. “What could interfere with that mechanic of the system though? Or perhaps it’s the rotation—needs to be in the right rotation to drop you off at the right space?” Aranea cleared her throat again and Prompto flushed pink.

“Your boys are going to be pickled pink to know you’re not dead,” Aranea told him, then paused. “I’d tell ‘em, but I lack their numbers.”

Prompto sighed. “No trouble. They’re probably already in Altissia.”

Aranea scoffed. “Last I heard they were still in Lestallum, and that was a day ago. Stopped looking for Mythril after you up and vanished.”

That surprised Prompto, he fiddled with the cup in his hands and his head down. He’d spent time getting over his insecurities with Gil and Ardyn, but the thought of Noct and the others—they were his best friends—upset that he vanished? Upset enough that they put their plans on hold? Prompto couldn’t fathom it.

“Don’t worry, I’ll take you to the city proper so you can search them out,” Aranea said. “I’ve been scouring this place for Mythril as an apology.”

Prompto scrubbed a hand over his face. “Don’t bother. I’ve got plenty.” Without thought he dipped his mental fingers into the armiger and tugged out three glittering pieces of mythril to show off. He banished them back into the familiar cold blue of Noct’s magic, and then froze stiff a second later. He could feel Noct’s magic. He could feel Noct. He could access Noct’s armiger! Ten years and Prompto missed the cold warmth of Noctis, the way it suffused through him and nestled near his heart. He found some solace with Ardyn, but the feel of them were like night and day. Noctis burned cold, but bright, like a nice breeze in the summer time that came off a fishing dock. Ardyn burned hot, like the comfort of the sun on a lounge chair and the heat of the desert but in the way that wasn’t stifling.

A second later Prompto realized he could still feel Ardyn’s magic nestled next to Noct’s and that—that left him breathless. Ardyn should be dead two-thousand years over and the magic gone, but it rested there like a fresh bond; Noct’s too felt new and fresh and whole. It felt like the Oaths he’d taken had dropped into the void, and then slammed back home where they belong the minute he paid attention to it. Prompto breathed in heavily and forced the panic away, well aware of Aranea’s attention on him.

“I’ll pay you in Mythril if you take me to Lestallum,” Prompto said as he pushed aside thoughts of Ardyn and why, and instead reached mental fingers into Noct’s side of the magic and tugged out his phone. “And don’t’ worry about telling the guys; I’ve got Iggy’s number.”

They agreed to meet at a neutral location on Ignis’ demand, and Prompto couldn’t blame them. He could remember how paranoid the Nifs made them; how hunted Noctis and them were for the mere fact that they survived the destruction of Insomnia. Prompto could remember it more like a dream, something that happened for a few short months ten years ago. Prompto’s weariness and paranoia stemmed from more immediate threats that he discovered in the past. Bandits on the road were always a concern, and daemons at night—and then there were the Scourge infected, half-turned or ill and the dangers they represented themselves.

Neutral ground really was best for the first meeting since the mess in Steyliff.

Prompto hopped off the bird he’d rented from where Aranea dropped him off and scratched just under her beak. He murmured a soft goodbye for the time being and turned around to look at Old Lestallum and sigh. They said the Crows Nest for a start, and honestly Prompto could do with a bite of food anyway so he turned toward the restaurant and jogged across the street.

The dinner didn’t have a lot of patrons today, probably due to the grey clouds hanging overhead, which suited Prompto just fine. He headed up to the counter and softly ordered some ‘Kenny’s Fries’, reached into Noct’s armiger, and tugged out the required gil from underneath the counter.

“Thanks!” Prompto cheered, turned around, and plopped himself down into one of the booths furthest away from the tipster to wait. With happy aplomb Prompto dumbed the fries into a mixture of ranch and ketchup and began to chow down with a closed eye groan of happiness. He missed fries. He missed Iggy’s cooking too.

Gods above Prompto missed a lot of things that he carefully stuffed away in the back of his mind these past ten years and—he struggled to stop himself from crying. Outside he could hear the Regalia purr into the parking space and the doors open. One of them slammed, and he could hear faint voices—someone yelling, Prompto thought, as he set his fries down and looked up.

For half-a-second Prompto saw a head of dark hair that he never thought he’d see again. It was messier than he was used to, and the slate blue eyes were brighter than he remembered, but time and distance often warped memory. Slowly Prompto slid out of the booth and stood to his feet, where Noctis turned and stared at him with wide eyes—and the next thing Prompto knew he felt the familiar cold-warmth of Noct’s light burst in his chest. Noctis wrapped arms around Prompto and hugged him close and—yeah, Prompto could feel the tears.

“H-Hey, buddy,” Prompto said, and his own voice trembled just a bit. “Miss me?”

Cor stared, and he couldn’t exactly help it because here was the one-year-old brat he’d dragged back to Insomnia some nineteen years previously, and fuck the kid wasn’t twenty anymore. The little blond monkey had new scars that Cor knew he hadn’t seen the last time he was with these boys, back at Keycatrich, and a goatee that took work beyond a few scant months. Cor knew full well that the boy didn’t even have the beginnings of facial hair yet so the goatee shouldn’t be a thing and fuck, of course Noctis and his retinue would get up to more insane bullshit than Regis ever tried.

He’d seen a lot, being part of Mors guard, and then shuffled off to Regis when Mors died. Cor saw too much sometimes; things that involved dead ghosts with honor-bound oaths that still roam the earth. The Blademaster had to be one of the most terrifying discovers of his life even if he blundered it under bravado, spite, fury, and a recklessness that really should’ve killed him long ago. To see Prompto now, to see the age worn on him, it felt like he’d stepped into one of Clarus’ fictional novels the bastard loved so much.

Cor hated to think it, but it also hurt how Ingis and Gladiolus worked to keep Noctis as far away from Prompto as possible. He wondered if he could see the blatant hurt that crossed the blonds face, the way his brows tilted down and his eyes grew a bit glassy. All this arguing and posturing started to get on his nerves, too. He wanted to punch something, or kill something—maybe take another stab at that bastard Blademaster—and those were dangerous thoughts in times like these so Cor breathed in deep, then breathed out, and stepped between the two groups before this argument got out of hand.

Instantly Ignis quieted and Prompto glanced to Cor. Cor eyed the way the boy straightened up and stood tall, and then looked over to Ignis and Gladiolus who were trying to keep Noctis from even so much as looking at the ‘stranger’ in their midst.

“Let me get a few things straight,” Cor said, and they kept attention raptly on him. “You claim that ten years have passed,” he looked to Prompto who nodded sharply. “We,” he looked to Ignis and Noctis and Gladiolus, “know that Prompto disappeared in the middle of Solheim ruins roughly one week ago.”

“One week, seven hours, fifteen minutes,” Ignis rattled off, and then flushed pink at the way Prompto gaped at him. “I was…” Ignis pursed his lips and looked away.

“Right,” Cor continued as if Ignis hadn’t displayed all of the weird shit that came with being the Hand of the King. Wesk used to do the same weirdness, once upon a time. If Cor hadn’t known Wesk to not have any kids, or interest in kids, or interest in women, or even a family then Cor might’ve questioned Ignis being a Scientia in the first place. Still he pressed on and glanced between the two.

“When Prompto disappeared your Majesty you said it felt like the bond broke?” Cor asked, and he saw the way Prompto went pale in understanding.

“Yeah,” Noctis said from behind Gladiolus, then grunted when Gladiolus pushed him back. “Except also not? It was weird, Cor, okay? Like something just…took it—but it’s back now! It’s back, and I can feel—it’s back….” Noctis’ voice broke faintly and Prompto grit his teeth and looked away.

“Noct…” Ignis muttered, but he didn’t turn around to comfort, and normally Cor would applaud the caution but now it felt just—stupid.

Cor sighed. “Right. Prompto?”

Prompto perked up. “Yes?”

“Show me your wrist.”

The room went deadly silent. Ignis glanced to Gladiolus, who shrugged and shook his head in confusion. Cor spared them only the briefest of glances before he returned his gaze solely to Prompto who froze, eyes wide. After a second one hand hesitantly went and grasped at Prompto’s right wrist, where the glove went up to cover half way onto the forearm. Prompto eyed Cor warily, lips pressed together as he breathed in slowly.

“Y-You know about that?” Prompto asked, voice soft and more timid than he’d heard out of the other man all day. Cor massaged the bridge of his nose.

“Yes, I know,” Cor said, then glanced at the group, then back to Prompto. Fuck it—at this rate keeping the whole mess a secret was worthless. Regis wasn’t King anymore, that fell to Noctis’ shoulders now, and secrets were messy and frustrating anyway. “I’m the one who brought you into Insomnia, Prompto.”

From the royal trio there was a stiffened spine and a hissed what and Prompto seemed to swallow heavily on his side. Cor could hear Noctis fighting with Gladiolus to get around and demand answers, but Ignis helped to contain the young King which was fine for now. Cor stepped up to Prompto.

“You know what it is?” Prompto asked.

“I do,” Cor said softly. “I can tell you more, but right now I need to see it.” Prompto chewed on his lip, then nodded, and carefully began to pull off his glove. Cor breathed a sigh of relief and snatched the wrist before Prompto could cover it with his other hand and began to study the barcode intensely.

Cor breathed out heavily and let the wrist drop. “Alright.” He looked to Prompto and said, softly, “Thank you.” Prompto nodded slowly once and carefully tugged his glove back on to cover the mark. He refused to look at Cor which—okay, fine, Cor could deal with that. It wasn’t like Prompto was his brat, even if he’d snuck a check up on him frequently over the years after the kid got adopted into the Argentum household.

Cor turned and faced the three blockheads who finally stopped fighting with one another and stared, waiting, for Cor to say something or anything. Noctis had finally wormed his way to the front and had a bright scowl on his face, Ignis sported a bruise on his cheek, and it looked like Gladio got nicked by a blade of some sort. Cor wanted to mutter kids under his breath and wondered if this was how Regis felt all those years ago when fifteen year old Cor got pulled into being part of Mors’ guard.

Instead Cor uttered, “It’s him,” to the boys and watched how Ignis went slack and Gladiolus looked ready to protest, but both didn’t stop Noctis from the jump forward to wrap Prompto back into a hug. Cor sighed as Ignis stepped close to him, eyes wide with barely repressed hope.

“A-Are you sure, Marshal?” Ignis asked and Cor glanced to where Prompto laughed and Noctis had basically squirrelled the thirty year old man onto one of the beds, commandeered him as a pillow, and began to play Kings Knight on his phone with Prompto.

“A hundred percent,” Cor said eventually and Ignis looked ready to question that further until Gladiolus slapped the man on the shoulder and smiled tiredly.

“Go cuddle with the kids, Iggy,” Gladiolus said, graced the hard stare of Ignis with aplomb, and then watched how Ignis carefully approached the duo on the bed before Noctis dragged him down and they became a trio.

Cor glanced to Gladiolus who settled down into one of the chairs on the caravan and pulled out two bottles of booze from the armiger. Cor frowned, accepted one, and dropped into the other chair even as he said, “You know that is for storing weaponry and curatives, not alcoholic beverages.”

“Pff, like you guys didn’t do the same,” Gladiolus rumbled and Cor snorted. They both watched the three with equal parts fondness and Gladiolus with more regret than the man should have, but then Cor received the dressing down from Ignis just the same and that—that kind of stung.

Perhaps, Cor realized with a bitter thought, he hadn’t gotten over his impulsiveness as much as he’d like now in his forties. Not if he happily brought Gladiolus to the point of potential death and—yeah, he deserved the dressing down even if it came from a kid half his age. Cor sighed and sipped at the beer for a moment, felt himself relax into the sound of laughter and Ignis’ soft scolding or questions about why are your clothes in such terrible states of disarray, Prompto?

Eventually Gladiolus brought up what was on his mind. “The barcode?” he said, and kept his voice pitched low so that the squealing Prompto couldn’t hear him, nor Noctis over the sounds of sudden tickling and protests as Ignis demanded all of Prompto’s clothes so that he could repair them appropriately.

Cor glanced to Gladiolus. “You know about that?”

“Saw it once or twice.”

Cor nodded, and said, “Yeah. The barcode.”

just out of curiousity (u can answer this whenever) what do u think ur characters would do on denny 2.0 ?

lucille might go settle down in victorian london because ultimately, there’s just some things about that kind of environment she prefers more, although that said i think she’d be a surprisingly... modernized presence there. there are a lot of elements of modern life she’s gotten attached to and won’t feel like abandoning; in fact, i think she’ll even keep her modern style of dress. this also gives her the opportunity to get involved in some more supernatural stuff, which she’s always been more inclined towards. so who knows what might come of that! just when she thought she might be free of all that silent hill-esque bullshit,

siobhan is probably gonna stick to living in the southwest because that’s just become home to her, at this point. she’s not giving up her saloon. but her role as a bounty hunter will probably mean she gets to travel a lot -- and it’d be cool to use this opportunity to give the denny guardians a like, specific cause to tackle maybe?? i’ll talk to fate and giz at some point but maybe we can have them get involved in the situation in the southwest where all the Mounting Outlaw Tension is, because then they have to choose between doing the Right Thing and... using the opportunity to take a shot at the mld, who rocket and siobhan at least have always hated. idk. maybe at some point they can also get stranded in our potential Prehistoric Location because i feel like that would really give raptor red the chance to shine. and maybe have siobhan and rocket have to rely on her a little more?

actually... it depends on my muse level for her but. if i want to do a bigger plot with siobhan she’s a good candidate for “gets captured by the organization and loses her powers”, because lifting the curse is! something she’s been trying to do the whole time she’s been on denny! but having it happen in this way would be really... hard and complicated for her and maybe allow her for some kind of arc where she decides she wants to get her powers back on her own terms, to keep being a guardian and keep doing good.

sara will be interesting because. well i guess it depends on what we decide but as things stands now i don’t really think it makes sense for “time travel” to be a feasible thing on New Denny, at least not outside a set period of time (like seasons? idk). so that’ll be a HUGE adjustment for not just her, but for all the denny legends. compared to what they’re used to, they’re very tied down. i think she at least will still stay on the waverider and travel around because she’s just... not built to settle down anywhere. maybe she and the legends will revert to more traditional (if setting-specific) vigilante work? because they have experience dealing with Historical Threats. and the organization itself definitely seems like something that would be on their radar.

my cats are honestly gonna be a pretty boring answer for this because i don’t think they would like. have much interest or even an entire capacity to understand what’s happening in the outside world, and are content to stay in the southwest and do their thing. so their plot stuff probably won’t change that much, barring like... nightcloud perhaps retreating to the outside world for a little while after tigerclanplot.

dolores will, unless something pretty major changes, probably be staying in beacon heights still. although i think... depending on what we ultimately end up going with for it, there’s a high possibility that she’d be interested in the Futuristic Location and establishing a bit of pull there. god imagine if there are like, any kind of robotic elements in play in whatever setting we choose. dolores stages ANOTHER revolution,

but yeah some of her plot stuff would probably depend on that... she’s also a tentative candidate for like? rifter government stuff if we set that up?? though if she got involved with that she could also be a source of conflict for it because her stances on certain things might be pretty intense, so it’d be interesting to see what happened with that.

sophie-anne is gonna go stay in chicago, i like, instantly decided. she’d LOVE it. it’s the 1920′s!! much less boring than the present >__>,

yeah but she’s probably just gonna move her club over there, although it might take on a slightly more... subtle exterior. in true speakeasy style (but also because like... it’d be a lot less safe in that setting to be so openly ‘yeah nonhumans are great!’). honestly she probably runs the risk of having a very complicated relationship with the local organized crime --

actually if i want to give sophie the opportunity to do something... more actively shady, maybe she could deal vampire blood to them?? and in exchange they don’t fuck with her or her club, but she also turns a blind eye to them going after and abducting other rifters.... hmm....

camille is gonna stay in metropolis. she’s not about this wacky stuff,

but actually giz and i were throwing around ideas and we thought the interesting thing about this plot/settings shift is that... these individual locations are, by their nature, just more isolated from one another than what denny’s used to. they all have their own things going on, their own separate cultures and communities. and that makes information and communication more important than ever. so i’ve already been weighing ideas for the daily planet becoming this more... overarching news station that tries to keep people in touch and connected and informed and just, taking on a more active role in general, which could be really interesting?? maybe they’ll work more closely with the mld, which gives me the opportunity to plot more camille/felix stuff and that’s never a bad thing. 

regardless it like... gives camille cause to travel a lot (which is cool because i think a lot of my characters in this context might be more interested in staying in one or a couple of locations) and just get involved in a lot of potentially unconventional stuff and i’m really here for that! she should get herself, like... a travel buddy.

sly actually might be free roaming it for awhile, although... i really want to get someone involved in the Pirate Stuff if we do that. and he seems like a great candidate for it. he was actually a pirate for a little while in the third game and he was kind of great at it. taking after henriette! it might also give him the opportunity to do some broader plot stuff i’ve been searching for for him, like... he could get involved in combating/stealing from the organization-employed pirates of the era, or maybe if we do the thing where the cure for whatever the experiments do is hidden somewhere around here and sly finds out about it he could be a kind of like... guide for people who are looking for it?? who wants to go sailing with sly

more importantly, who wants to join sly’s pirate crew,

susie... i’ve actually not entirely decided what i’m gonna do with susie yet. mostly because there’s a lot of shady stuff going on that she’d have overt knowledge of, but i... don’t know how much she’d want to get involved? maybe i could do stuff with like. her giving people she’s friendly with more subtle nudges towards The Truth. or maybe if someone wants to do a “my character loses their memories” plot and needs an eventual fix for it, i could offer susie for that. idk.

she might settle in our 70s/80s european location because lbr that’s just home for her. maybe this’ll spur her into opening up a dance academy or something like she’s been thinking of?

cordelia is probably gonna get moved over to st. denis (or a little ways outside of it) if that’s our new orleans standin. which... makes for some interesting conflict becaaause i’m not sure the people around there would be as... you know... accepting of witches as people in modern day new orleans are. it’s gonna put her more on the defensive and potentially create some more conflict between the coven and the public which... could definitely be interesting

and she’d be very agitated by the idea of the organization and them catching and experimenting on people too so, she may be one of my characters who gets more involved in that. she’s also, apart from dolores, another candidate for Potential Government Stuff because she’s already in a position of authority and i just feel like she’d naturally be very good at something like that. makes for more accessible plotting with her, too

alana is still gonna be involved with mld stuff of course which means... well! her schedule might get a lot busier with all the mld is dealing with. but also that she might get to work with a more diverse array of characters if the mld expands their ranks. 

i think she’ll definitely be involved with organization-related stuff to some extent, if... indirectly, at first. because the mld, of course, is going to be dealing with all these emerging threats. actually as a profiler, maybe alana can be one of the people who start connecting the dots re: how a lot of these things are connected?? it really depends on how some of this stuff plays out but...

what else she’ll get involved in, i’m not sure because i still wanna potentially do things like the murder mystery plot with her, so she might be more subplot designated... idk! we’ll see!!

and then villanelle. well. once she starts to accumulate a fair amount of money on denny (which... probably won’t take her too long, given her, well, specific talents), villanelle is probably going to go live it up in 70s/80s europe too. especially if we settle on paris. she’d LOVE that. 

but also... fate and i have been talking about plots for her and fox, and we’ve been tossing around an idea where... they both get picked up by the same employer (she’s an assassin, he’s a mercenary, there’s plenty of overlap) and then things start to get increasingly skeevy and fox starts to question it a lot while! villanelle doesn’t care! because why would she? and that creates a lot of conflict and tension between them and ultimately maybe fox at least gets through to her in the context of “don’t let these people use you”. its an enemies-to-friends(?) plot, basically, but my point being prior to this we were just gonna revert to using some random npcs or something but now... if fate’s game, having fox and villanelle accidentally end up working for the organization that’s targeting all these rifters could be hugely interesting, i think

The Last Jedi Critique

General Introduction/Disclaimer I wanted to explore, from as many angles as I could, The Last Jedi and my reaction to it. Please note, going into this, that my overall opinion of the movie is that I did not like it, and that will be apparent in most of my critique, but there were moments that I did like; this is not a pure hate fest.

These will be the main categories for how I approach my dissection of The Last Jedi.

Honestly, just this one facet took a long time to write and is relatively lengthy; I need to take a break from this, and will return throughout the week to approach the other subjects. Characterization will likely be the last, as there are so many characters to explore and I have so many things I want to examine.

Let’s get on with it.

Pacing

It is a general criticism I have of movies these days (particularly blockbuster, action-based movies) that they try to cram too much into too short a time frame. The general structure of a movie should mimic a short story format, filling out bits where there is room. That’s all that there really is time for.

TLJ felt very convoluted to me, which was even more striking when I learned, post-viewing because I missed it, that it was all supposed to take place in only 18 hours. (What is time in space? Star Wars never handles timelines well, but cramming everything that happened in this movie in a space of 18 hours was too much.)

Let’s examine what happens: we begin immediately where The Force Awakens left off. (Which is very unique for a Star Wars film, a point for later.) This means that the First Order has tracked down the Resistance’s base almost immediately after the events of TFA.* How did they do this? How did they pull off tracking down the Resistance after suffering the huge defeat at Starkiller Base? (It did not seem like they felt it was important to explain, but it was important to me, and that’s something I’ll cover more under political and military world building later.) [EDIT: apparently they were targeting the base at the end of TFA, oops. Nevertheless, seems kind of weird that the FO would regroup so quickly and that there’s no sense of urgency to an evacuation at the end of TFA.]

Anyways, this timeline feels off to me, and feels like a plot device, rather than something believable or natural. Previous gaps between movies have been long enough to believably account for relationship, political, and military developments.

So, within 18 hours:

Holdo devises her plan to head to Crait and puts the gears in motion; Poe questions it

Finn and Rose meet, talk, and explain their plan to Poe

They call Maz

Poe caps off their plan and sets that in motion

Finn and Rose travel to casino planet (someone please show me on a galaxy map that this is at all feasible. Is this planet along the hyperspace lane that the Resistance was using? How far out of the way did they have to travel? Also, someone convince me that Maz, knowing they are in a critical timeline, would think this a reasonable plan.)

Perhaps you could convince me this was all possible in an 18-hour span, but what you cannot convince me is this: That all of Rey’s scenes occurred in 18 hours.*

We saw the passing of time on Ahch-To, and unless this planet has a very short rotation, she must have been there for at least a week.

She would have to go from thinking “Kylo Ren is a monster” to “Kylo Ren can be redeemed” in the span of 18 hours. This seems too difficult a feat to pull off. She barely knows Kylo. (Mind bridge commentary to be found under “Force Use” in Writing and Worldbuilding.)

This movie has to work very hard to convince me that Luke would disappear for seven years. All of that persuasion is for naught if he is to be so easily swayed back in the span of 18 hours.

*Perhaps Rey’s scenes did not occur within the 18-hour time limit established in the Resistance Escape plot; perhaps they occured before. I’d argue that her communications with Kylo anchor Rey’s timeline within the Resistance Escape timeline, especially given the healing of Kylo’s scar. However, if you don’t buy, I’ll follow up with the argument that the way the movie is edited and constructed, that is definitely not made clear and any kind of non-simultaneous plot lines ought to be articulated with care to avoid audience confusion.

Disregarding the actual time limitation, the scenes felt very disjointed and the transitions clumsy (and I’m not talking about screen wipes). “Where’s so-and-so?” one character asks, and immediately we switch to a scene of that character. The first time this happens, I thought, “okay, a classic but clever transitional tool.” The third or fourth time it happened, I thought, “let’s try something different?”

This kind of repetition plagues the movie throughout and gives the film a very “stop-go” jerkiness:

The Resistance battles and escapes! The First Order appears again; a battle, an escape!

Leia is killed — no wait, she’s alive in space, but now she’s in a coma so still incapacitated. (btw, will address the concept of the Force flying and Force preservation in space under Worldbuilding)

Finn & Rose found the codebreaker! Oh no they were caught! Oh they found a different codebreaker! Oh but they don’t care and are just getting away! BB-8 kept the codebreaker around! Oh but he won’t help unless they pay a high price — no Rose paid the price! Oh but she got it back! Oh but now he betrayed them!

Luke is shot by a thousand cannons! No he’s alive! No he’s dead! No he was an illusion and he’s alive! No he’s dead.

Basic storytelling is figuring out what your characters want and putting obstacles in the way of that. This didn’t feel like obstacles, it felt like the characters were on a leash and being yanked back by the same thing, over and over again. They weren’t overcoming obstacles; they were being set free by plot devices to proceed with their quest (quests which, ultimately, prove fruitless), and there is a very big difference between those mechanisms.

TLJ does have a large cast and balancing screen time is admittedly tricky; transitioning between those characters is an added complication, but that’s why a short story format should be preferred. In order to cram so many plot developments and “character development” into this movie, scenes felt shorter and jumps to other characters more frequent, which is why the transitions felt so disjointed. It’s difficult to give the proper weight and context to something when the story jumps to another part of the galaxy, to another character, and to another situation entirely.

(Please note that I’m not saying the side plots should have been cut; on the contrary, I love Poe, Finn, and Rose, and honestly would have preferred a movie featuring them more in the foreground, working together, with a better subplot. Less Kylo, more Poe, Finn, and Rose. But this is a movie about Skywalkers, you say. Yes, I’ll cover the Skywalker Legacy in Characterization later.)

In dealing with so many situations and subplots, the main thread of the movie seemed lost to me.

Here are all the plots going on:

The First Order’s pursuance of the Resistance through hyperspace

Poe’s insubordination/mutiny and the consequences of it

Finn and Rose trying to sneak aboard Snoke’s ship by way of casino planet

Rey trying to persuade Luke to (a) train her and (b) return to the fight

Rey going behind Luke’s back and talking to Kylo; Rey trying to turn Kylo

Luke grappling with his own failures and coming to terms with them, and facing Kylo

The ultimate battle and destruction of Snoke

The competition between Kylo and Hux

The rising of the Resistance from the Republics ashes: “We are the spark that will light the fire that will burn the First Order down” (nothing epitomizes the convoluted writing of this movie more succinctly than that particular quote. What a mouthful! I guess Lucas isn’t the only one culpable of writing unsayable lines)

Among all of these threads, I think we’re supposed to come to the conclusion that fighting creates more problems; to truly combat violence in the world, the best answer is to put more love back into it. I’m getting this message specifically from Rose’s scene after she saves Finn, but I think it’s also supposed to tie into Kylo’s story, in terms of how Luke’s attempted murder of Kylo was, ultimately, what broke him, whereas Rey tries to follow Luke’s example from the Original Trilogy (remember when he did that? Johnson doesn’t) and bring out the light in him.

If that was the message, it was diluted and covered up by all the other things going on, the mess that was Poe’s subplot, the ultimately useless effort put in by Finn and Rose, and the childish bickering between Kylo and Hux, and the fact that the main villain was defeated about two-thirds of the movie in. Too much is going on for this to have the emotional impact that is needed.

Emotional impact is supposed to come with the climax of the movie. Which climax?

TLJ appears to have two: the confrontation in the throne room and the final battle in the old rebel base. It’s the same problem that Return of the King had — “wait, that wasn’t the end?” — even if it’s not to such a great extent.

The throne room scene falls flat because it robs Snoke entirely of his power and threat. Snoke is the master architect behind the First Order, Kylo Ren, and Hux. Yet Kylo defeats him so easily — the man who, supposedly, is the great puppeteer behind all of Kylo’s actions. Kylo is capable of tricking him. You know, this would have been great, if there had been any kind of proper back story and development to Kylo’s powers. This would have been great, if Kylo Ren did not immediately revert back to his childish temper tantrums (“Everyone fire at one man!”) (More on this under Kylo.)

Snoke’s death falls flat because where do we go from here? It’s sort of established the Kylo will be Snoke’s heir, when Kylo Force-chokes Hux, but Kylo has shown very little actual leadership throughout both TFA and TLJ. He gives orders, okay, but a few lines doesn’t demonstrate real leadership. What he demonstrates more than anything is his willingness to give into temper tantrums (Hmm, why does that sound so familiar in a “leader”? Who else does this?). That kind of leadership is especially not sustainable in a military environment, not when Hux has demonstrated more disciplined leadership experience.

Assuming that Episode IX accurately depicts this unraveling of Kylo’s power, specifically with Hux as his main rival, then we should get a power struggle that results in the downfall of the First Order. (What a short-lived reign that would turn out to be!) However, I’m not sure why that would happen when Johnson’s trilogy is supposed to follow that converted child rebel that Rose gave her ring to. That implies an unresolved ending to Episode IX. Or else a cyclical oscillation of: dissolution into chaos, the rise of a rebellion, and so forth. Which isn’t unprecedented in history, but kind of exhausting in a story telling franchise.

There’s no clear road map for the rest of this story. Storytelling should not be a “gotcha!” with twists. Twists are only satisfying when the clues and evidence are peppered in, that when the twists happens, it’s not a “wow! I didn’t see that coming at all!” it’s a “Wow! That was brilliant and I should have seen it coming, and on rewatches, it’s so gloriously constructed.”

After the throne room scene, we’re given several other smaller, climactic scenes: Leia and Holdo stopping Poe, Finn battling Phasma, and the First Order firing upon the fleeing Resistance. After each fight climax has been resolved, it should be time to wrap up after that — but yet another faux climax is presented. Just like with Return of the King, this results in time checking and contributes even further to the disjointedness plaguing this film.

The second substantial climax comes with the First Order’s assault on the base and Luke and Kylo’s subsequent confrontation. Of course, here is a plot arc that does make sense; this movie has, unfortunately, pitted nephew and uncle against each other throughout, and this is the necessary resolution to that contrived conflict. I’ll agree that with the story constructed as it was within TLJ, this needed to happen; I will not agree that the story should have been constructed this way to begin with or even that the events of TFA called for it.

Plot

The Force Awakens left us with open plot threads that The Last Jedi needed to continue. Namely, the mystery behind Rey’s parents, Rey’s role in this conflict, and the falling out between Kylo and Luke that resulted into the present state of the galaxy, with Kylo being at the helm of a fascist organization and Luke having disappeared. Essentially, we are left with: the Skywalker family is in shambles, now how did this happen?

The mystery of Rey’s parents is essentially built on two main pillars: that she is no one yearning for her lost family and that it is specifically the Skywalker heirloom lightsaber that awakens the Force within her. This lightsaber should have been demolished in the core of Bespin, but it is brought back, and that revival is significant. There is nothing inherently special about this lightsaber, other than its belonging to the Skywalkers, and when it calls to Rey, that imbues it with a particular story-specific meaning. This meaning is further enhanced because it marks a Change in Rey: she demonstrates no obvious Force-usage before contact with this particular object. Why would an object constructed by Anakin Skywalker bear any meaning to a stranger? It wouldn’t, and it shouldn’t. If Rey was always intended to be “no one,” then the emphasis on this object triggering her Force powers is at best sloppy storytelling, at worst irresponsibly misleading. (See: plot twist criticism above.)

There is a third, perhaps debatable pillar, regarding Rey’s parentage, which is the reminder that Kathleen Kennedy has stated that the story is about the Skywalker family. Let’s be clear: the Skywalker family story is decently resolved by the end of Return of the Jedi. Luke triumphs over his temptation to fall to the dark side, Vader is redeemed, the galaxy is saved.* The sequel trilogy never needed to be about the Skywalker family; in fact, Luke’s inclusion in TFA actually complicated the writing of it. The TFA writers just couldn’t figure out how to prevent him from overpowering all other characters.

Let’s remember that Luke Skywalker needed to be removed from the story, that this plays a part in the plot construction of the sequel trilogy, and that his exile on Ach-to was a completely arbitrary development borne out of convenience rather than sincere story telling.

Still Kennedy decided and declared that the story was about the Skywalker family, and so that promise ought to be delivered.

Arguably, Kylo Ren is the generational continuation of the Skywalker line, but going from two Skywalkers to one seems rather feeble and undermines the premise that this story is about the Skywalkers.

The pomp and circumstance surrounding Rey’s lineage is continued in TLJ, with Kylo talking to her about it and the bizarre, off-tone mirror scene. All this build up leads to the revelation that Rey’s parents are equally nobodies, mere junk traders. Some will argue there were hints to this all along, but there were as many hints to this if not more (I’d say more) as there were implications of relation to the Skywalker; what this means is that both TFA and TLJ are more focused on being obtusely clever with their wall-of-mirror Red Herrings than devising a well-constructed attempt at foreshadowing.

Essentially at conflict here is whether Rey as “no one” or Rey as “Skywalker” makes for a better story. But that’s not what matters and that’s not why the “no one” revelation disappoints so many. Either story can carry compelling meaning, and the sequel trilogy could have been either story. But both stories were not equally telegraphed, and both stories cannot support the declaration that this is a story about the Skywalkers.

What is a story about the Skywalkers that focuses on their demolition? Luke, dead. Kylo, lost to the darkness. Who knows what Leia’s fate will be with Carrie’s passing? This is, inevitably, a story about their fall, their tragedy, but where is the emotional impact of this when the Skywalkers have so briefly been a family?

This is not the death of a long-standing lineage. This is a cynical take on a family torn apart just as they were beginning when Anakin chose the dark side, a family that found each other after two decades nonetheless — found family in each other before they even knew of blood relation, a family that finally gets to experience the hope of reconstruction and reunification with the end of the war and the birth of Ben.

This is a family that disintegrates with contrived conflict that puts character development either on pause (Leia and Han) or puts character development through a convoluted ringer that unfairly occurs entirely off-screen (Luke) between the OT and the ST. There is no future for the Skywalkers with Kylo Ren, and that much is made clear by Kylo’s recapitulation of Vader’s refrain: Together we can rule the galaxy. (How disappointing.) We cannot forget Kylo’s role in Snoke’s fascist regime, we cannot forget the deaths at his hands. Rey gave him the chance for redemption, and he chose darkness. There is no future for Kylo Ren. There is no future for the Skywalkers.

There would be a future, if Rey was a Skywalker.

But Rey is not a Skywalker, and Rey is the protagonist.** Rey is the not-Skywalker protagonist pitted against Kylo Ren and/or assigned the task to redeem Kylo Ren. Rey is, ultimately, the destruction of the Skywalker family.

That is what it means for Rey to be “no one.” That is the role she plays in this story that is proclaimed to be about the Skywalker family.

Unless, of course, Kathleen Kennedy is full of nonsense, and this sequel trilogy was never about the Skywalker family to begin with. But that is not what TFA sets up, and that is not what she said, and as a reminder, we never had to set that up in the first place. We could have always had a story about no one without the illusion that it was about the Skywalker family.

*The only thread unresolved would be Leia’s chance to process the news that Vader is her father, but Leia is never given a chance to process her tragedies, and sadly — wrongly — this is never a priority of the original trilogy. The sequel trilogy could have picked up this thread, but instead they let it dangle awkwardly until they could turn it into a plot device for Leia’s son to process instead. This is where Kylo’s story is problematic, but we’ll get to that later.

**Kylo Ren is not a protagonist. Protagonists do not function as Kylo Ren has functioned. Furthermore, fascists should not be protagonists. But I’ll focus more on this when I get to Kylo’s characterization.

Extra: Subplots

Really quickly I’d like to address Poe’s subplot.

It is a fad in the movie industry to idolize dissent. And dissent has a well and good place in history and politics, but sheer criticism of authority leads down a rabbithole to anarchy and any depiction of dissent must be handled with careful, nuanced care.

Undoubtedly, Finn’s dissent, rejection, and desertion of the Empire is good.

But what is the point of Poe’s dissent? His questioning of Admiral Holdo’s orders is troubling enough; but we see him question General Leia Organa’s orders, a woman of vast military leadership experience, a depth of wisdom and knowledge well beyond Poe’s years, a woman whom we know he respects and admires.

It is very troubling that he questions her judgment, even moreso because it is a young man questioning the judgment of an older woman. It is undermining of female authority and it happens twice in this film.

The other problem with the Poe and Holdo conflict is that as any person with experience watching movies, it is so clear that Poe is wrong. It is clear that Holdo has a plan. Poe is going to go to great lengths to subvert her — blatant and bizarre insubordination after just getting demoted for doing the very same thing to a woman he supposedly respects and admires.

However, the movie does not deliver adequately on the dramatic irony that Holdo, another woman of authority, does in fact know what she’s doing. Her “big move,” her “big plan,” turns out to be rather anticlimactic, for a person who is initially established — by Poe himself — to hold seriously awesome Battle Cred. I was ready and eager to be surprised by her outsmarting Poe’s dumb bumbling. Instead, Poe successfully mutinies against her! No military organization would allow direct refusal to obey orders and an attempted coupe to go unanswered and have that person be rewarded.

As for Holdo, even in her heroic move to sacrifice herself, she still takes way too long to plan her hyperspace ramming into the First Order fleet. (I credit this more to the pacing problems than anything else.) She really didn’t need to stay on that ship; no one did, it was piloting itself. There was no purpose of sacrificing an intelligent and competent war leader in order to continue flying the ship. Of course the purpose of her being there was so she could eventually protect the fleeing Resistance fleet, but no one has any way of knowing that during her solemn goodbye. Her death is just a plot device, a tear jerker for the sake of drama, and was entirely unnecessary in a movie that already boasts a high body count. So much for establishing new characters, when you’re going to kill them off so quickly. 

One More Thing

My friend literally just asked me: Does it start with the First Order finding the Rebel base and they have to flee, a Jedi apprentice training under an old master before encountering an evil cave and fleeing to face the Dark Lord by him/herself, and then a somewhat bleak ending?

Like TFA, TLJ is a reprise of the second OT movie, with elements of ROTJ mashed in (everything about the Snoke confrontation, from Kylo and Rey’s trip in the elevator to Kylo killing Snoke). That Kylo gets the opportunity to make a choice and subsequently chooses darkness after killing his master now brings us to the reprise of Anakin’s plea for Padmé to join him, his confrontation with Luke akin to Anakin and Obi-Wan’s. This entire movie felt like they recycled stock pieces of previous Star Wars films, rearranged them, and mashed them together.

Do you have any recommendations or thoughts about how to divest interplanetary travel from sci-fi? I've been trying to build this universe forever, and i think having multi-species interaction would be cool, but I'm not entirely drawn to a fantasy world where all the 'species' are confined to that planet, and would love to have a species on a moon. But the thought of spaceships and advanced tech has never felt right. I feel stuck!

Delta: On principle, it is possible to include “space travel” in a fantasy-genre story. The line between science fiction and fantasy is pretty blurry to begin with, in many cases, so having a world that “feels” fantasy, but includes some kind of space travel is very possible, and all in the delivery.

I think the answer to your question is going to depend on the level of technology you have in the rest of your world. Depending on that, there are numerous options that could get a group of people from one planet to another. One idea include some kind of magic teleportation (as seen in fantasy like The Witcher), which usually operates on a planetary basis, but there’s no reason your universe couldn’t expand it to interplanetary travel (and won’t seem particularly un-fantasy-like in my opinion, simply new and unique). Another option would be some kind of solar sail, that uses sunlight (or rather, the radiation or light photons that it’s composed of, if you want to be scientific) to propel them from one planet to another. In real life, this is a genuine theoretical proposal for human space travel, and has been used in other science fiction films, such as Treasure Planet. Treasure Planet also did something interesting in that “space” in that movie is not a vacuum, so there was no need to pipe air through a closed spaceship. You could play with a redefinition of space like that, where it is either less lethal or not a vacuum or something like that.

Finally, regarding delivery, if you make the rest of your story feel like fantasy, then it will be fantasy, regardless of whether or not your characters travel from planet to planet. This will depend on everything from the style in which you write to the rest of the worldbuilding you do. I would recommend looking at fantasy stories that are your favorites, picking out the reasons you like that kind of fantasy, and seeing how you can add that style or “aesthetic” to your own story, to retain the feel that you’re looking for, while still exploring the full extent of worldbuilding you want to do.

Tex: Science fiction, to very broadly generalize, does its socio-political commentary under the guise of advanced technology - this usually pushes the setting to the future (or its sub-category of “once upon a time”), because of the awareness that one’s audience doesn’t already have the aforementioned level technology. It’s a method to suspend disbelief, and makes it easier to broach contemporaneous, controversial topics.

Fantasy behaves the same way, but in the ostensibly opposite direction of supernatural/paranormal. Science fantasy is a combination of the two, though admittedly the Wikipedia article is more of a stub that leads to other avenues of research. The teleportation that Delta brought up is an excellent idea - Wikipedia’s list on teleportation outlines the many methods that have been used in the past, with quite a few of them abstaining from a technological standpoint entirely.

I would, however, like to point you in the direction of Arthur C. Clarke’s Three Laws, particularly the third one:

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

As many examples in the list on teleportation point out, there are feasibly-believed technologies available to worldbuilders that from a Watsonian perspective could be perceived as “magic”, and thus fulfill your wish to find a middle ground between “fantasy” and “sci-fi”. The world of Hellboy, I think, meets many of these qualifications, and in particular how the live-action 2004 film showed people moving between “realms” while having a mix of steampunk-esque and modern, mundane technology.

The world is your oyster in this regard, because of the plethora of ways you could accomplish your vision. I think you have a great idea on your hands, and it should be interesting no matter what you decide on.

Feral: Portals have been a staple of the fantasy genre for decades. Although TV Tropes refers to this as “Trapped in Another World,” there’s nothing inherent about portal fantasy that says you can’t freely travel between the worlds. Although Chronicles of Narnia and Alice in Wonderland are probably the best known portal fantasies, a different take on the genre is the ABC show Once Upon a Time, in which the characters travel (only as freely as the plot needs, tbh) between different universes through a variety of methods including the Dark Curse, magic tornadoes, magic beans, magic hats, and Genie wishes.

There is also Diane Duane’s young adult series Young Wizards, in which the characters travel totally freely between different worlds in our solar system, galaxy, and universe via magic portals called worldgates. There is a hub of worldgates known as the Crossings, which is a spaceport but with magic portals instead of space ships. I recommend Young Wizards to pretty much everyone, but I think this specific series could definitely help jog some ideas for the brand of fantasy you’re going for - just a heads up that the interplanetary travel aspect is given a nod in the first two books, So You Want to Be a Wizard and Deep Wizardry, which take place respectively in a parallel universe and the bottom of the ocean, but really gets going in the third, High Wizardry.

Another weird take on the portal fantasy/science fantasy niche crossover genre is Doctor Who. Yes, aesthetically speaking, Doctor Who is much more sci-fi than what you might be interested in, but we’re talking about the mechanics of space (and time) travel, and the TARDIS is a magic blue box that you enter and then a minute later you exit and are in a different place and/or time.

Favourite mythology/fairy tale etc? I don’t know if this really counts but I really love hearing ghost stories from the Disney parks. I love the contrast between the super clean, family friendly, safe image Disney prides themselves on in the parks versus the darker underbelly of the hauntings showing the not so safe and family friendly side.

If you could design a planet what colours would you choose? Every color of the rainbow, made metallic/sparkly, with a black background so they really pop.
